Control Of Broadleaf Weeds In Sunflowers With Desmedipham And Phenmedipham, Monte D. Anderson Jan 1984

Control Of Broadleaf Weeds In Sunflowers With Desmedipham And Phenmedipham, Monte D. Anderson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Preplant and preemergence herbicides are used currently to control broadleaf weeds in sunflowers (Helianthus annuus L.). These herbicides require incorporation practices or early rainfall to be effective and are most effective for control of grassy weeds but do not control certain broadleaf weed species. Broadleaf weeds such as wild mustard (Sinapsis arvensis L.) and redroot pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus L.) are common in sunflower fields. Postemergence herbicides that control these broadleaf weeds are needed in sunflowers. Phytotoxicity of foliar-applied herbicides is often influenced by rainfall. The effect of rainfall on herbicide performance can be influenced by weed species, types and rates …

Cation Exchange Capacity Predictions, Margaret Michele (Peg) Becker Jan 1984

Cation Exchange Capacity Predictions, Margaret Michele (Peg) Becker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Cation exchange is a property of the soil in which the soil colloids gain and lose cations to and from the soil solution. Cations commonly exchanged are calcium (Ca+2), magnesium (Mg+2), sodium (Na+), potassium (K+), hydrogen (H+), and ammonium (NH+). The relative importance of the mineral and organic components of cation exchange capacity (CEC) is useful in many areas of agronomy, such as soil genesis, soil fertility, and pesticide usage. The chemical reactions in soils that are important to the understanding of soil behavior occur at colloidal surfaces. These surfaces are electrostatically charged and surface reactivity is influenced and often …

The Relationship Between Denial And Behavior Pattern In The Patient Experiencing Myocardial Infarction, Cynthia Collmann Barinsky Jan 1984

The Relationship Between Denial And Behavior Pattern In The Patient Experiencing Myocardial Infarction, Cynthia Collmann Barinsky

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Denial has been recognized as a possible adaptation mechanism for patients with heart disease, stroke, brain damage, cancer, emphysema, manic-depressive psychos is, and neurologic disorders. Croog and coworkers discovered that twenty percent of 345 men treated for three weeks after a first myocardial infarction denied they had even had a heart attack. The problem under investigation in this study is: What is the relationship between the use of denial as a form of adaptation and the type of behavior pattern reflected in male patients within two weeks of admission to a coronary care unit with a diagnosis of myocardial infarction? …

The Economic Feasibility Of Small Scale Cooperatively Organized Fuel Alcohol Production In Eastern South Dakota, Daryl Arthur Brehm Jan 1984

The Economic Feasibility Of Small Scale Cooperatively Organized Fuel Alcohol Production In Eastern South Dakota, Daryl Arthur Brehm

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Research on the economic feasibility of a cooperatively organized small-scale fuel alcohol plant is justified for several reasons. Policy makers could consult the results of this study as an aid in making decisions about public subsidies for fuel alcohol production. Investors concerned about the wisdom of allocating capital to this type of fuel alcohol production facility are also potential beneficiaries of this research. Perhaps most importantly, this information would be valuable to farmers in eastern South Dakota. Alcohol plants organized on a cooperative basis could reduce the individual financial risk of farmers involved--by spreading commitments among all the cooperative's members. …

Effects Of Anabolic Implants And Breed Group On Carcass Traits And Palatability Characteristics Of Bullock Beef, Roger C. Johnson Jan 1984

Effects Of Anabolic Implants And Breed Group On Carcass Traits And Palatability Characteristics Of Bullock Beef, Roger C. Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The ultimate goal of the beef industry is efficient production of beef that satisfies the consumer and increases demand. In the past, American producers have been primarily interested in the production of high quality beef because consumers were concerned with meat palatability, particularly tenderness. However, due to current diet-health issues and economic conditions, American consumers have come to expect acceptable palatability and are now more concerned with the nutrient density and cost of their meat purchases. Maximum production efficiency must be realized to keep beef competitive with other protein sources for consumer dollars. Production systems must be used that are …

Polyperiod Linear Programming Analysis Of A Brookings County Irrigated Farm, Paul Kiendl Jan 1984

Polyperiod Linear Programming Analysis Of A Brookings County Irrigated Farm, Paul Kiendl

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the U.S., agriculture is a major industry which produced approximately $529 billion worth of goods in 1982. Agriculture directly employs 3 percent of the U.S. work force, while another 19 percent is employed in manufacturing, processing, transporting, and retailing agriculturally related products. In the past few years, this major industry has experienced a turbulent economic period. The general economic recession in the world coupled with the elevated interest rates have depressed the financial position of the agricultural sector. In 1981, both short-and long-term interest rates reached post World War II record highs. More significantly, the real interest rate rose …

Egypt's Image In The American Media : A Content Analysis Of The New York Times' Coverage Of Egypt, Mahmoud Abd Elraouf Kamel Jan 1984

Egypt's Image In The American Media : A Content Analysis Of The New York Times' Coverage Of Egypt, Mahmoud Abd Elraouf Kamel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It seems to the unfamiliar with the Arab world that all Arab countries are the same. The Arab countries speak the same language, Arabic; have the same dominant religion, Islam; share the same geographical boundaries; have the same cultural and historical backgrounds; and share the same future as developing countries. The American media, and probably European media, are used, in many cases, to stereotype the Arab countries as one whole. Nevertheless, the Arab countries vary one from another in many characteristics such as natural resources, kind of rule, literacy rate and population density and growth. Egypt is one of these …

Improved Procedure To Compute Fall Velocity For Naturally Worn Sediment Particles, Michael Richard Knofczynski Jan 1984

Improved Procedure To Compute Fall Velocity For Naturally Worn Sediment Particles, Michael Richard Knofczynski

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A major concern confronting hydraulic engineers is the ongoing problem of predicting and controlling sediment transport in unlined water carrying channels. The sediment load in a stream is not only indicative of channel and land erosion but also affects water quality, navigation and the useful life of a reservoir. A number of methods have been developed which compute sediment load. All of these methods depend on a number of sediment properties, the most significant being sediment size, sediment specific gravity and fall velocity. Fall velocity is considered by many to be the most fundamental of these properties. Fall velocity, which …

The Effect Of Simulated Natural Toxaphene Exposure On The Immune Respone Of Mice, Linda Reilly-Gergen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The objectives of this investigation were to determine the immunotoxic effects of toxaphene exposure in mice after either ingestion or cutaneous absorption. Immunological competence was determined by studying various parameters of nonspecific, humoral, and cell-mediated immunity. These included 1) total and differential white blood cell counts, 2) organ to body weight ratios, 3) hemagglutination antibody titers, 4) the number of antigen-specific antibody-forming cells, and 5) both mitogen- and antigen-induced lymphocyte proliferation assays. The effect of toxaphene exposure on the overall immunoreactivity was determined by noting any alterations in resistance to infection and disease as measured by the LD 50 of …

Information Needs And Sources Of The South Dakota Horticulture Industry, Iris (Friedrichsen) Thoreson Jan 1984

Information Needs And Sources Of The South Dakota Horticulture Industry, Iris (Friedrichsen) Thoreson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Information is needed by horticulturists in areas such as chemical use and application, plant diseases and insects, cultural practices, and marketing techniques. Horticulturists can use a variety of sources to get the information they need. They can use printed material, radio or television, and personal sources. The individuals or groups wanting to communicate with horticulturists need to be aware of the kinds of information needed by the horticulturists and the sources used by them. A computer search of current literature disclosed limited findings on the information gathering processes used by commercial horticulturists. However, researchers have studied information gathering processes in …

Factors In Ultrafiltration And Thermal Concentration Of Whey Affecting Commercial Lactose Crystallization, Howard Henry Bonnemann

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The source for lactose production in the United States is almost exclusively sweet (low acid) whey which is the byproduct of cheese manufacture. Its extraction from the whey is motivated largely by pressures to utilize whey components to advantage. The ability to recover lactose efficiently is important to the manufacturers because they are in business ·to make a profit. At current market prices this profit margin will be difficult to realize unless an operation is fairly large a11d quite efficient. However, when considering the alternative of disposing of whey or its components, including lactose, as waste instead of attempting to …
