Flameless Atomic Absorption Study Of Cobalt And Nickel In Black And White Display Screen Glass, Hui-Chieh Wang Apr 1984

Flameless Atomic Absorption Study Of Cobalt And Nickel In Black And White Display Screen Glass, Hui-Chieh Wang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A small quantity of nickel oxide and cobalt oxide is often added to the screen glass for both black and white and color television screens. These oxides give the glass a primarily neutral grey color. The purpose is to mitigate the influence of light sources outside the television set. Reflection of light from these sources against the luminescent layer can result in a noticeable reduction of the picture contrast. The effect of these colored oxides is based on the fact that the light reflected by the lumines cent layer passes through the screen glass twice and the light emitted by …

Stereochemistry Of Reactive Intermediates In Organophosphorous Chemistry, Alagappan Thenappan Mar 1984

Stereochemistry Of Reactive Intermediates In Organophosphorous Chemistry, Alagappan Thenappan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A new synthetic route to produce a phosphonyl radical in the ground state has been devised. The radical is capable of maintaining its structural integrity and geometry. In polar aprotic solvents the radical can equilibrate depending upon reaction conditions. Our results are significant for they show that the homolytic cleavage of a phosphorous oxygen bond could by changing the configuration at phosphorous, influence the biological properties of naturally occurring compounds. The stereochemistry of 2-substituted-5-ch1oromethyl-5methy1-2-oxo-1,3,2-dioxaphosphorinans can be established by proton NMR spectroscopy. Methanolysis of 2-hydrazinophosphorinans has been investigated. Cis and trans 2-hydrazinophosphorinans undergo acid catalyzed methanolysis to give products of both …

Robert Bly And The Twofold Consciousness, Mary A. Thelen Mar 1984

Robert Bly And The Twofold Consciousness, Mary A. Thelen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

"How beautiful to walk out at midnight in the moonlight/ dreaming of animals." It is samplings of Robert Bly's poetry such as these which have prompted Eliot Weinberger to wonder, "What kind of windbag and language slob would write such a line?" But there are also such fine and startling images as "The bare trees more dignified than ever" or "lamplight that falls on all fours in the grass," which Ian Hamilton admires. Hayden Carruth has encapsulated the view of many of Bly's readers, who regard him as one of the most annoying and exciting poets of the 1960's and …

The Effect Of Varying Lysine Levels In Starter Diets On Pig Performance And On Subsequent Performance And Carcass Characteristics, Robert C. Thaler Mar 1984

The Effect Of Varying Lysine Levels In Starter Diets On Pig Performance And On Subsequent Performance And Carcass Characteristics, Robert C. Thaler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Lysine is the first limiting amino acid in most cereal-based diets for swine. Thus, in cereal-based diets the lysine- requirement must be met first if the pig's protein anabolism is to be efficient and maximal. The most widely used diet in the swine industry today is the corn-soybean meal diet. Corn is deficient in lysine, but soybean meal is a relatively good source of lysine, so soybean. meal is added to the corn base to increase the diet's lysine content. Synthetic lysine also can be added to corn-soybean meal diets to increase lysine content or added as a replacement for …

Possible Relationships Between Surface Water Chemistry And Aquatic Plants In The Northern Great Plains, Kristin K. Sletten Mar 1984

Possible Relationships Between Surface Water Chemistry And Aquatic Plants In The Northern Great Plains, Kristin K. Sletten

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The possibility of establishing relationships between surface water chemistry and the occurrence of certain aquatic plant species was investigated on 281 wetland sites throughout the northern Great Plains. Ninety-seven species of aquatic plants were selected for the study, selection being based on the direct association of plants with water and on the number of sites at which the plants were found. The ranges and means of surface water conductivity, total alkalinity and pH values were determined on a species by species basis. Of the three chemical parameters measured, conductivity of surface water appeared to have the greatest influence on the …

The Effects Of Steel Fibers On The Plastic Rotation Capacity And Properties Of Reinforced Concrete Continuous Beams, Khani Sahebjam Mar 1984

The Effects Of Steel Fibers On The Plastic Rotation Capacity And Properties Of Reinforced Concrete Continuous Beams, Khani Sahebjam

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

During the development of structural engineering, many ideas and concepts were considered and tested. A great deal of research has been done on reinforced concrete, which plays a significant role in current structural construction. Over the past decades there has been a competition between concrete and steel structures. Both concrete and steel structures have some advantages and disadvantages. Obviously, depending on the type of structure, choosing the right alternative is important. Reinforced concrete structures, unlike steel structures, tend to fail in a relatively brittle manner because the deformation capacity of reinforced concrete is limited. When dynamic loadings are involved, concrete …

Correlation Of Soil Moisture With Soil Surface Temperature Obtained By Thermography, Daniel Paul Roesler Mar 1984

Correlation Of Soil Moisture With Soil Surface Temperature Obtained By Thermography, Daniel Paul Roesler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Since the atmosphere attenuates the radiation emitted by the earth, the actual surface temperature is difficult to measure accurately from satellite heights. However, the temperature difference between two locations on the earth can be measured to a better approximation if the atmosphere attenuates the radiation equally over both surfaces. Thus, the temperature difference between two locations is more accessible than the actual surface temperature of each surface. If surface temperature difference does correlate to soil moisture difference, then relative moisture content can be calculated. Consequently, if a reference moisture is available for one location, the moisture content of the soil …

The aquatic invertebrate communities of level ditches and adjacent natural emergent marsh in a South Dakota prairie wetland were sampled during the summer of 1982. Collections were made in both the water column and the bottom substrates. Forty-five taxa were collected. Analysis of variance indicated that a significantly greater mean number of taxa and a larger mean number of all macroinvertebrates were present in level ditches than in the natural emergent marsh. No differences were detected for mean biomass of all macroinvertebrate taxa collectively. Several taxa had a greater mean number and biomass in the level ditches than in the …

Factors Affecting Water Quality And Microinvertebrate Distribution Within A Small Black Hills Stream, Henry G. Drewes Jan 1984

Factors Affecting Water Quality And Microinvertebrate Distribution Within A Small Black Hills Stream, Henry G. Drewes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A comparative evaluation of the benthic macroinvertebrate fauna was conducted concurrently with a physiochemical investigation on Slate Creek, Pennington County, South Dakota in the Black Hills. Water quality differences between years and among stations were detected in Slate Creek from both physiochemical and macroinvertebrate evaluations. The primary sources of disturbance to the Slate Creek study site during the sampling period were landscaping activities within the Deerfield Park Resort development and livestock activity. Increased runoff and elevated stream flows in 1982 were responsible for the variation in water quality between years. Water quality differences among stations indicated significantly (P < 0.05) higher turbidity and temperature immediately below the development site in 1981 and 1982. Significantly (P < 0.05) higher fecal coliform bacteria counts were observed at station 5 for both years, resulting from increased livestock activity. Phosphates and nitrates were highest at stations 4 and 5 but were not significantly (P > 0.05) different …

The fish fed 0% bwt/day decreased in mean weight by 0.7 g; the weight gain for the 3 and 5% bwt/day feeding rates were 47.2 and 45.2g, respectively. Significant differences (P ≤ …

The Manufacture Of Cheddar Cheese Using Vacuum Concentrated Milks, Charles A. Bemis Jan 1984

The Manufacture Of Cheddar Cheese Using Vacuum Concentrated Milks, Charles A. Bemis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The United States (US) cheese industry has grown rapidly in the past decade. From 1971 to 1981, milk fat utilization for cheese manufacture increased from 17.7 to 27.6% of the total US milk fat supply, accompanied by a 49% increase in sales of cheese per capita (34). Offsetting substantial increases in sales and prices for cheeses, there have been marked increases in the cost of labor, energy, waste treatment, raw materials, and equipment. Hence, the manufacturers are realizing narrower profit margins. As a survival mechanism, cheesemakers have sought to maximize cheese yields per unit of milk, since increases in cheese …

Chemistry Of Phosphate Esters : Stereochemical Evidence For A Dissociative Mechanism, Mohammed Hashmat Ali Jan 1984

Chemistry Of Phosphate Esters : Stereochemical Evidence For A Dissociative Mechanism, Mohammed Hashmat Ali

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many attempts have been made to elucidate the various mechanism by which phosphates act in biological and other systems. There are many suggestions regarding mechanisms all of which fit into one of two broad categories. 1. Associative. 2. Dissociative. Of these two, interest to the associative type displacement has been of most investigators and this pathway has been established with certainty. On the other hand, less work has been done and there has been much controversy surrounding the dissociative mechanism. The dissociative mechanism is believed to be important because it has been thought that it represents the actual biological processes …

The Efficiency Of Four Selection Schemes For Improvement Of Cold Tolerance And Disease Resistance In Maize, Andrew Rocholl Bettendorf Jan 1984

The Efficiency Of Four Selection Schemes For Improvement Of Cold Tolerance And Disease Resistance In Maize, Andrew Rocholl Bettendorf

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The economic worth of any individual (plant or animal) is usually dependent on more than one trait. Since there is usually more than one trait involved in selection, a breeder’s problem is determining the relative importance of each of these traits. They must then be placed in some logical order so that the best material is selected for the following generations. Arriving at reasonable economic weights for each trait may be fairly difficult, especially if not much is known about the material one is working with. other factors to consider when selecting within a population are, how heritable the trait …

The Effects Of Climate On Total Digestible Nutrient Consumption Of The Cow And Calf And Cow Efficiency, David G. Boom Jan 1984

The Effects Of Climate On Total Digestible Nutrient Consumption Of The Cow And Calf And Cow Efficiency, David G. Boom

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Animal productivity is a function of energy intake and heat production. The body core temperature must remain relatively constant and this is accomplished by regulating the balance between heat gain and heat loss. If, due to climatic stress, more energy is needed to maintain homeothermy, less energy is available for production. The range of ambient temperatures in which the animal can maintain homeothermy without increasing its rate of heat production is the zone of thermal neutrality. The lower border of the zone of thermal neutrality is the lower critical temperature. Temperatures below this zone cause the animal to immediately increase …

Love In Major Novels Of Carson Mccullers, Lynn Margaret Butterbrodt Jan 1984

Love In Major Novels Of Carson Mccullers, Lynn Margaret Butterbrodt

Mrs. McCullers was not a prolific writer; this was largely due to the fact that she was hindered throughout much of her life by serious illnesses. When she was fifteen, doctors misdiagnosed rheumatic fever as "pneumonia with complications.” Her heart was severely damaged by this illness; consequently, she suffered strokes which resulted in blindness in one eye, complete paralysis of her left side, and complications therefrom. Her final stroke in 1967 left her comatose for forty-seven days until her death on September 29, 1967, at age fifty. Her doctors believed that had her early illness been correctly diagnosed, her lifestyle …

Feasibility Study Of An Owner-Operator System For Producing Trichoderma Reesei Qm 9414 Cellulase, Carla M. Cass Jan 1984

Feasibility Study Of An Owner-Operator System For Producing Trichoderma Reesei Qm 9414 Cellulase, Carla M. Cass

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Cellulosic wastes are the most abundant organic material on earth. Utilization of cellulose occurs through microorganisms by a process of hydrolysis to low molecular weight hexoses and pentoses. These are regarded as substrates for microbial production of food (single cell protein), ethanol (fuel alcohol) butanol and other fermentation chemicals. Agricultural producers incur the largest volumes of these cellulosic wastes, therefore it is of economical importance that they be utilized. However, the owner-operator system for the utilization of in-situ produced cellulose for conversion to glucose has yet to be totally resolved. Since the facility at SDSU is similar to that of …

Effects Of Tillage And Cropping Systems On Spring And Winter Wheat Production In South Dakota, Brad Gale Farber Jan 1984

Effects Of Tillage And Cropping Systems On Spring And Winter Wheat Production In South Dakota, Brad Gale Farber

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Fallowing is practiced to accumulate enough water in the soil during one year so that wheat can be grown successfully in the following year. The desired effect is to increase and stabilize wheat yield over the years. In recent years however, better management practices have increased the amount of moisture stored in the, soil during the non-cropping season. These practices can eliminate the need for fallow and can provide protection from freeze injury for winter wheat. Practices such as seeding with deep furrow drills, seeding into standing stubble, no-till seeding, and wind barriers of various types all provide protection to …

Sociocultural Factors Associated With Grassland Plowout In South Dakota Counties, Peter Froelich Jan 1984

Sociocultural Factors Associated With Grassland Plowout In South Dakota Counties, Peter Froelich

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The conversion of grassland into cropland is a cultural activity. As such, it can be expected to be influenced by other aspects of the larger cultural system. Because grasslands that have been plowed into cropland become subject to increased erosion risk, knowledge about other factors in the cultural system that are associated with these conversions. may be useful to those interested in monitoring or influencing them. While some research has been directed toward the adopt Ion of Environmental Innovations, there is a general lack of research concerning the conditions associated with the need for conservation activities. The above information suggests …

An Epidemiological Study Of Listeria Monocytogenes Using Virulence, Agglutination, And Agglutinin Adsorption Techniques, James R. Hoffman Jan 1984

An Epidemiological Study Of Listeria Monocytogenes Using Virulence, Agglutination, And Agglutinin Adsorption Techniques, James R. Hoffman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The serological characterization of Listeria monocytogenes apparently began with the work by Seastone, who determined that a close serological relationship existed between cultures collected from humans and animals. Schultz et al. and Julianelle et al. later suggested that two serological types existed that could be connected to the origin of the strain. These initial studies were expanded by the work of Paterson, who studied the antigenic structure of Listeria monocytogenes using agglutination and adsorption techniques. Paterson studied somatic and flagellar antigens. The somatic antigens were prepared by growing bacteria on 1% glucose agar at 37°C for 18 h, removed with …

An Evaluation Of The Sensitivity Of The Landsat Multispectral Scanner To Variations Of Species, Crown Closure, Age, And Thinning Within A Forest Plantation, Stephen M. Howard Jan 1984

An Evaluation Of The Sensitivity Of The Landsat Multispectral Scanner To Variations Of Species, Crown Closure, Age, And Thinning Within A Forest Plantation, Stephen M. Howard

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many scientists investigating forestry problems have advocated the use of operational satellite remote sensing systems as a source of forest inventory information. Satellite systems offer the potential of world-wide repeat coverage, but their inability to discriminate individual trees restricts the level of detailed forest information that can be acquired. Forested lands are easily identified on Landsat multispectral scanner (MSS) imagery, and the discrimination between mixed decidious and evergreen forest stands can be made with multi-date comparisons. This study concentrates on the question of how much more detailed information can be reliably obtained from Landsat MSS data. The purpose of this …

Forage Production And Utilization Systems For Cow-Calf Beef Production, Muftah M. Imsalem

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Native grasslands in South Dakota are extremely variable and have steadily declined in condition. Pasture techniques are currently available to modify vegetation composition and productivity to bring about higher yields. Development of pasture systems that increase forage production is of a major importance in South Dakota. Fransen found that tame pastures and interseeded native range produced more gain per hectare than native range. The average daily gain of the cattle dropped severely at the end of the season in native and native-interseeded range. However, the tame pastures required substantial inputs in terms of fertilizer nitrogen. The purpose of this study …

The past years have shown drastic changes in energy costs, largely the changes have been for the worse in the public sector. From 1970 to 1980, the price for one barrel of crude oil rose from $3.15 to $33.50, a 1060% increase. The prices of the various energy sources are shown in Table 1. The result of the increasing energy costs is improved management by energy consumers as well as energy conservation measures throughout the United States. The design of energy efficient units in wastewater treatment plants has been overlooked in the past. As a result of this neglection, the …

The Frequency Of Nurse Reported Stress And Its Relationship To The Physical Attributes Of Various Nursing Units, Richard Michael Jones Jan 1984

The Frequency Of Nurse Reported Stress And Its Relationship To The Physical Attributes Of Various Nursing Units, Richard Michael Jones

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The nursing profession has a high attrition rate with respect to its work force. A 1977 study conducted by the United States Department of Labor estimated that twenty-seven percent of the total nurse population was neither employed nor looking for work. Holding this percentage constant for the 1980 statistics, there are approximately 400,000 additional registered nurses who are not working today. White asserts that "burnout" is the primary factor responsible for the attrition rate among professional nurses. Burnout is defined by Lavendero as the ineffective ability to cope with stress in the work environment. He argues that conclusive evidence concerning …
