A Twentieth-Century Sense Of "Election" : The Works Of John Fowles, By Jerry Cooley. Cooley
A Twentieth-Century Sense Of "Election" : The Works Of John Fowles, By Jerry Cooley. Cooley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Unanimous praise for a writer's work is very rare, and probably non-existent. The differences of opinion regarding the work can take several forms: evenly divided between positive and negative or weighted in favor of one or the other. John Fowles. The latter is the case with the novels of Although the early criticism of such works as The Collector, The Magus, and The French Lieutenant's Woman (FLW) was predominantly negative, the emphasis now is mostly positive. The early criticism was commonly a review, which usually offered only a superficial outline of the plot. The trend, however, has been to examine …
Dietary Alteration Of The Energy Metabolism In The Sow During Late Gestation, Reid A. Christopherson
Dietary Alteration Of The Energy Metabolism In The Sow During Late Gestation, Reid A. Christopherson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Mortality among young pigs prior to weaning is extremely high with swine producers frequently realizing a death loss of 25% of the pigs farrowed. The majority of these deaths occur within 3 d postfarrowing and can be attributed to being born weak crushed by the dam starvation and chilling. Generally, these causes are the result of the inability of the baby pig during the first few days of life to adequately meet its metabolic energy requirements for sustaining vital body functions. The neonatal pig until about 3 to 4 d of age has a difficult time adjusting to those environmental …

Response Of South Dakota Adapted Sorghum Cultivars To Maize Dwarf Mosaic Virus Strains A And B, Chang Won Choi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Both MDMV-A and -B were transmitted by natural infection and mechanical inoculation on South Dakota adapted sorghum hybrids and occurred at the Brookings area. Grain sorghum hybrids were found to react differently to mechanical inoculation with MDMV-A and -B, respectively. Strain A usually induced a systemic mosaic symptom, while strain B usually produced local and necrotic symptoms. However, a few cultivars infected with strain B exhibited systemic symptoms. During a comparative ultrastructural study of MDMV infection, there was an obvious difference in inclusion bodies between MDMV-A and MDMV-B. Electron microscope revealed the presence of pinwheels, bundles, tubes, scrolls, and laminated …
Use Of Satellite Thermal Infrared Telemetry In Soil Moisture And Rainfall Mapping, Randall Lee Chilson
Use Of Satellite Thermal Infrared Telemetry In Soil Moisture And Rainfall Mapping, Randall Lee Chilson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Current monitoring of rainfall and soil moistures is being done by ground collected data. This method is time consuming, expensive and impractical for remote regions. A method which could use data for a large area collected from an orbiting platform would greatly ease the task and assist in predicting oncoming droughts and desert expansions. Since the soil temperature is affected by many factors such as vegetation coverage, slope, texture; composition, and soil moisture levels, measurement of soil temperature would then be an ideal method of determining some of these variables. Surface temperature in turn can be monitored by its thermal …
Effects Of Prairie Dogs On Mound Soils, Daniel C. Carlson
Effects Of Prairie Dogs On Mound Soils, Daniel C. Carlson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Biological pedoturbation is a process of soil formation which has not been studied extensively. Pedoturbation is the physical and/or biological mixing of soil material which tends to homogenize soil color and reduce soil morphology differences in the soil solum. Pedoturbation is often a sub-surface or scarcely noticeable soil surface activity, yet many studies dealing with soil mixing are based on surface observations of displaced soil without considering soil profile changes below the surface in determining the volume of soil disturbed by mixing. Black-tailed prairie dogs are burrowing rodents that alter soil development on gently-sloping, shortgrass areas of the Great Plains. …

Emergency And Disaster Services In Brookings County, South Dakota, Lisa M. Brannan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The nature of disasters has changed over the years. There is a need for informing the general public of the nature of these changes so that they can be prepared for disasters that may be possible in the future. This thesis addresses the nature of these changes and what the response has been to each. An effort will be made to predict the types of disasters that may be most certain in the future. Most counties in South Dakota do not have written plans for their communities in the event of a disaster. Brookings County is one of the few …
Moral Drama : The Rhetorical Style Of Geraldine Ferraro, Patricia R. Boik
Moral Drama : The Rhetorical Style Of Geraldine Ferraro, Patricia R. Boik
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Just as the events of the Seneca Falls Convention changed the lives of women in America, Geraldine Ferraro's vice-presidential nomination has provided new opportunities for a new generation. It is the purpose of this study to examine the rhetoric of Ferraro and determine the motivation for the method of style used in her speeches. In rhetorical terms style refers to word choice and usage. The motivating factors and specific style developed by Ferraro were determined by answering the following questions: 1. What historical, economical, and social factors influenced Ferraro's career choices? 2. How are the recurring themes in Ferraro 's …
Redemptive Strategies In The Novels Of Bernard Malamud, Patrick B. Bjork
Redemptive Strategies In The Novels Of Bernard Malamud, Patrick B. Bjork
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In an interview with critic Robert Kegan, Bernard Malamud spoke about his characters: "What strikes me about them,” he said, “is that all throughout they have possibilities. They have opportunities to leave. They have a way out, but they never give up.” “My belief, Malamud said, is in human possibility”. As an experimenter with the novel form, Malamud has written seven novels, each uniquely different in style and genre, and yet each expressing this vision of human possibility. The main characters in his novels possess within themselves the potential to overcome their self-doubts and moral indiscretions. When they do, they …
Recurrent Themes And Forms Of Support In Selected Speeches By Russell H. Conwell And Robert H. Schuller, Marty J. Birkholt
Recurrent Themes And Forms Of Support In Selected Speeches By Russell H. Conwell And Robert H. Schuller, Marty J. Birkholt
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study, as an item of scholarly research, may partially fill the existing gap in research concerning the recurrence of themes and forms of support. Whether or not themes and forms of support recur from one speaker to another, this investigation may also provide insight into the practices of homilists. If themes and forms of support do recur from an earlier speaker to a later speaker, the study may be able to assign cause for such recurrence. Any conclusions that can be drawn explaining why themes and forms of support developed by one speaker recur in the rhetoric of another …
Characterization Of The Selenium Compounds In Rat Bile, James Terrence Baumberger
Characterization Of The Selenium Compounds In Rat Bile, James Terrence Baumberger
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Selenium, atomic number 34, resembles sulfur in many of its chemical properties and occurs in inorganic form as H2Se, H2Se203, H2Se03, and H2Se04 which are the analogues of H2S, H2S203, H2S03, and H2S04 respectively. In contrast to sulfur oxides, the most stable oxide of selenium is Se02 rather than Se03. Selenium dioxide is a solid that readily reacts with water to form H2Se03 and is easily reduced to elemental selenium. Besides inorganic forms, numerous organic selenium compounds are known. Organoselenium compounds, in general, are less stable and more reactive than the corresponding sulfur analogues and these properties may account for …
Assessment And Improvement Of The Modified Ackers And White Sediment Transport Procedure, Mohammed H. Bagherzadeh
Assessment And Improvement Of The Modified Ackers And White Sediment Transport Procedure, Mohammed H. Bagherzadeh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In 1973 Ackers and White introduced a method which calculated sediment transport based on an effective or significant particle size. They did not take grading of sediment into account. In 1980 White and Day presumed that because the riverbed materials are non-uniform using a significant size is too simplified. They modified the Ackers-White transport equation so it can be used in transport calculation with graded sediments. In 1984 Jeff Lewandowski, a graduate student at SIEJ, used the data from the White and Day study and modified the original Ackers and White equation so it can be applied to graded sediments …

Stocking Density, Strain Performance, And Feeding Method Evaluation Of Cage Reared Rainbow Trout (Salmo Gairdneri) In Eastern South Dakota, Dale B. Allen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Methods for cage rearing rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) were investigated to assist in the development of a landowner aquaculture program for eastern South Dakota. Rainbow trout when stocked as small fingerlings in the spring did not reach a marketable weight (200 g). The fish did attain a size acceptable to some landowners for personal consumption. Maximum stocking density (fish/m3) was not determined. Densities greater than those used would have been needed to determine the optimum stocking rate. The use of a deeper culture cage (3 m) was justified in this area due to the high water temperatures that were common. …
Ring-Necked Pheasant Cover Use In Eastern South Dakota, Karen Peterson Craft
Ring-Necked Pheasant Cover Use In Eastern South Dakota, Karen Peterson Craft
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Seasonal cover use of radio-tagged hen pheasants was analyzed and vegetative characteristics of nesting habitat identified in east-central South Dakota during 1983 and 1984. Radio telemetry locations were collected during the summer and fall of 1983 and winter of 1983- 1984 for cover use determinations. Chi-squared analysis of cover use revealed positive selection (P≤0.05) for the idle/roadside cover category in summer, wetlands in fall, and the shelterbelt/woodlot category in winter. Agricultural set aside areas in the 1-year 1983 Payment In Kind (PIK) program were avoided by pheasants in summer as were row crop fields in both summer and winter. Cover …
The Effects Of Three Rodenticides On Nontarget Small Mammals And Invertebrates, Michele S. Deisch
The Effects Of Three Rodenticides On Nontarget Small Mammals And Invertebrates, Michele S. Deisch
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Mortality of non-target small mammals and invertebrates using 3 rodenticide treatments (pre-baited zinc phosphide, pre-baited strychnine, and strychnine alone) was evaluated in western South Dakota. Rodenticides were applied September 22-24, 1983 on 15 black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) towns. Immediate (September 1983) and long-term (September 1983 through August 1984) rodenticide efficacy and impacts on non-target wildlife species were evaluated. None of the 3 rodenticide treatments produced significant ( a < 0.10) immediate impacts on deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) relative densities. Increases of deer mice densities occurred in 1984 on sites that had been treated with the 2 strychnine treatments. These long-term increases in deer mice densities were due to habitat change associated with the absence of prairie dogs. Overall, comparisons among the 3 rodenticides for efficacy indicated that zinc phosphide reduced deer mice densities greater than either strychnine treatment. Seven invertebrate taxa were evaluated. Immediate and long-term effects of the 3 rodenticide treatments occurred when significant differences in invertebrate densities were found between control and treated sites. Spider mites (Acarina) and crickets (Orthoptera) were not affected by the 3 rodenticides. Immediate impacts of zinc phosphide occurred on ant (Hymenoptera) densities and long-term impacts were found in August 1984. Strychnine alone immediately reduced wolf spiders (Araneae) 13% in September 1983 and densities increased on treated sites as compared to control sites in June 1984. Densities of darkling beetles (Coleoptera) in September were significantly reduced with zinc phosphide. Ground beetle and dung beetle (Coleoptera) densities were not immediately reduced by the rodenticides in September. Generally, the few long-term changes in invertebrate densities are attributed to biotic and abiotic factors. Changes in vegetation structure due to prairie dog control may have affected invertebrate densities. Comparisons among rodenticides for efficacy indicated that zinc phosphide immediately reduced densities of ants and darkling beetles greater than either strychnine treatment. None of the other rodenticide comparisons showed significant differences in immediate reductions of non-target invertebrates in September 1983.

An Ecological Study Of Mourning Doves In A Cold Desert Ecosystem On The Idaho National Engineering Laboratory, Frank P. Howe
An Ecological Study Of Mourning Doves In A Cold Desert Ecosystem On The Idaho National Engineering Laboratory, Frank P. Howe
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Mourning dove (Zenaida macroura) use of and movements around man-made ponds, as well as dove nesting ecology, were studied from 1983 through 1985 on the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory (INEL). Relative dove use was higher (P < 0.01) on some ponds than others, and multiple regression revealed a positive association (R 2 = 0.49) between relative use and the geographic isolation of ponds. Two peaks in diurnal pond use were exhibited by doves on the INEL: the mourning peak began around 0800 and lasted until approximately 1300, and the evening peak began at about 2030 and ended by 2150. Seasonal pond use fluctuated slightly through the summer then dropped rapidly in early September. Average and average maximum movements indicated that the 41 mourning doves trapped and fitted with radio-transmitters at the Test Reactor Area (TRA) and the Naval Research Facility (NRF) did not move off of the INEL on a regular basis. The average distance from mourning dove locations to TRA and NRF was <2.0 km, and the average maximum dove location was <3.5 km from either facility. Average (<2.0 km) and average maximum (<3.5 km) distances were also measured from dove locations to watering sites. Doves captured at both TRA and NRF moved, on average, 1.5 km from their nests; the average maximum distance from a dove's location to its nest was 2.8 and 5.4 km for doves caught at TRA and NRF. The average maximum distance between any 2 locations (for the same individual) at both TRA and NRF was <4.0 km. Mourning doves on the INEL are primarily ground nesters. Nesting success averaged 68% per year, with 1.8 fledglings produced per successful nest. Nesting densities averaged 0.02 nests/ha during the study. Three peaks in hatching occurred on the INEL: 1 during the fourth week of June, another during the third week of July, and a third during the first and second weeks of August. Annual production estimates for the INEL ranged from 11,300 to 17,000 doves, based on a model using 2 and 3 nesting attempts per summer. No differences (P > 0.05) were indicated in the percent coverage of shrubs, grasses, forbs, and bare ground, as measured with the line-intercept method, in the 5-m area surrounding dove nests and paired random sites. However, a difference in the percentage of grass cover and bare ground, as measured with a point-frame, was indicated in the 1-m2 (microhabitat) centered on the nest or random site; nest sites contained …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) nest use of dense nesting cover (DNC) established under the Pheasant Restoration Program was evaluated in Beadle, Codington, Tripp, and Walworth Counties in South Dakota from 1978 to 1981. Nest densities and success in DNC plots were compared to those found in roadsides and privately owned alfalfa (Medicago sativa) fields, pastures, and small grain fields. Vegetation density and cover development were monitored on DNC plots. Nest densities were generally greatest in DNC plots followed by roadsides and alfalfa fields. Pastures and small grain fields contained the lowest nest densities. No relationship was detected between nest success and …
Seal Development And Infiltration As Affected By Rainfall Kinetic Energy, Deah Abed Mahamad
Seal Development And Infiltration As Affected By Rainfall Kinetic Energy, Deah Abed Mahamad
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The infiltration of water into soil has been studied for more than 50 years. Much of the effort has concentrated on obtaining infiltration rate measurements for different soils and on developing equations which describe the resulting data. A portion of the infiltration literature has dealt with the large affect that the development of a surface seal has had on the resulting infiltration measurement of a soil. This surface seal may be more significant in determining the infiltration characteristics of a soil than any other single or perhaps combination of factors. Surface seal development has been linked to both rainfall energy …
Lactational And Systemic Responses To The Supplementation Of Protected Methionine In Soybean Meal Diets, Daniel J. Illg
Lactational And Systemic Responses To The Supplementation Of Protected Methionine In Soybean Meal Diets, Daniel J. Illg
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The high producing dairy cow requires a complex balance of protein and energy. Microbial protein provides a substantial amount of the amino acids absorbed by the small intestine. High production rates cannot be attained with microbial protein as .the sole source of amino acids. The ten classical essential amino acids are required for milk protein synthesis. Increasing the amount of available amino acids to the mammary gland has improved casein production, indicating substrate availability as a controlling factor to milk protein synthesis. A major portion of the nitrogen component of milk is derived from free plasma amino acids. Uptake by …
Inhibition Of Psychrotrophic Bacterial Growth In Refrigerated Milk By Addition Of Carbon Dioxide, Robert Francis Roberts
Inhibition Of Psychrotrophic Bacterial Growth In Refrigerated Milk By Addition Of Carbon Dioxide, Robert Francis Roberts
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The advent of on-farm refrigerated storage for raw milk in the late 1940's and its subsequent adoption by North American dairyman 'during the next 20 years essentially eliminated spoilage of milk by lactic acid bacteria. However, refrigeration does not prevent growth of all microorganisms present in raw milk (9, 33, 51, 52, 54, 55). Many microorganisms capable of growth at refrigeration temperatures, termed psychrotrophic bacteria, are present as normal contaminants in raw milk supplies. For purposes of clarity, psychrotrophic microorganisms have been defined as microorganisms capable of growth at 7°C or below regardless of their optimum growth temperature (9). Milk …
Effect Of Steel Fibers On Precast Dapped-End Beam Connections, Jamal M. Ajina
Effect Of Steel Fibers On Precast Dapped-End Beam Connections, Jamal M. Ajina
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The analysis of connections in precast concrete structures is complex due to the concentration of stresses on the bearing areas that transfer loads from one member to another. The design equations available were developed through field experience, tests and structural analysis. Proper design should take into consideration the safety, simplicity, and economical and practical applications of these connections, as well as the production of structural units and construction situations pertinent to precast concrete buildings. Proper reinforcement must be provided to ensure the safety of the connection. One possible improvement is the addition of steel fibers to the concrete mix. The …

Postmergence Grass Control In Soybean Using Diclofop-Methyl, Difenopenten And Sethoxydim, Jim Klauzer
Postmergence Grass Control In Soybean Using Diclofop-Methyl, Difenopenten And Sethoxydim, Jim Klauzer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Annual grasses and broadleaf weeds reduce soybean yields. Preplant and preemergence herbicide applications control these weeds in production systems which utilize the moldboard plow but are less effective in conservation tillage systems. Preplant herbicides provide less effective weed control in “reduced tillage” practices because incorporation is not accomplished. Preemergence herbicides are less effective in conservation tillage systems because the heavy crop residue does not allow contact of the chemical with the seed bed. The poor coverage with preemergence herbicides allows many weeds to escape control. Untimely weather conditions prevent proper application of preemergence herbicides in both conventional and conservation tillage …
