Laboratory Evaluation Of The Theory Of Catenary Irrigation Trail Tubes, Abbas Toghiani-Pozveh
Laboratory Evaluation Of The Theory Of Catenary Irrigation Trail Tubes, Abbas Toghiani-Pozveh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Water shortage and high energy cost have promoted the concept of a trail tube irrigation system. Trail tubes are perforated polyethylene hoses, which can be used to replace sprinklers on a center pivot irrigation system for water and energy conservation. A theory on the hydraulics of catenary trail tubes was developed by Chu (1986). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the catenary trail tube theory under laboratory conditions. Perforation flow rate, elevation and pressure were measured on three trail tubes in the laboratory. Tube flow rate, velocity head and friction loss along the tube were calculated from measured …
A Study Of The Relative Contribution Of Selected Sociocultural And Personality Variables To The Explanation Of Prejudice And Discrimination In South Dakota, Dan Peterson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Very little research has been conducted in South Dakota on the subject of prejudice and discrimination. This research not only attempts to address this lack of research, but it also attempts to assess the functions that prejudicial attitudes may serve as well as to provide further insight into the explanatory power of divergent theoretical perspectives (psychological and sociological). In order to fill this gap in regional research, a questionnaire was administered to a sample of college freshman attending one of the state colleges in South Dakota. Results of the survey indicated that those sampled were neither unprejudiced nor highly prejudiced, …

Population Trends In South Dakota Counties, 1880-1980 : A Geographical Analysis, Abdur Rahim
Population Trends In South Dakota Counties, 1880-1980 : A Geographical Analysis, Abdur Rahim
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
South Dakota is one of the most sparsely populated states in the nation. According to 1980 census data, the population density of this predominantly agricultural state is 9.1 persons per square mile, compared to a national density average of 64.0 persons per square mile. The human occupation of South Dakota is characterized by population trends and patterns which exhibit a variety of spatial forms and considerable dynaminism over time. After opening of the settlement frontier in the mid nineteenth century, South Dakota began attracting many immigrants and settlers. The population of the state reached its zenith in 1930, declined during …
The Metal Promoted Hydration Of Di-2-Pyridyl Ketone And The Crystal And Molecular Structures Of Bis-2,2',N,N'-Bipyridyl Ketone-Hydrate Chromium(Iii) Chloride And Ruthenium(Iii) Chloride, Shaun Owen Sommerer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The metal promoted hydration of Di-2-Pyridyl Ketone (DPK), has been of interest for some time in that it falls into a rare class of ligands that undergo reaction upon coordination to a transition metal ion. Metal promoted hydration here means that the carbonyl linkage of the ketone has undergone hydration to the diol form because the DPK is coordinated to a metal. Fig. 1 illustrates the hydration process. This is of interest because it is well known that ketones do not normally undergo hydration unless they are flanked by very strong electron withdrawing groups such as chloride or fluoride. Special …

Effects Of The Lethal Yellow Gene (C57bl/6j;A̲Y̲) On Uterine Capacity And Ovarian Hypertrophy Following Unilateral Ovariectomy In Mice, Mary Ann Schoessler
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The lethal yellow allele, AY is a mouse mutation which manifests itself in a number of defects. Several studies have used AY as a subject since it was first described in 1905 by Cuenot. Despite these investigations, primary genetic and molecular lesions associated with AY remain unknown. Cuenot reported three aberrant phenotypic aberrations caused by AY: yellow coat color, obesity, and lethality in homozygous embryos (AY/AY). Bray and York reviewed a number of additional AY-induced abnormalities, one of which is AY-induced reproductive senescence. Reproductive failure of AY/-mice is the main emphasis of this thesis. Through investigation of the causes of …
Effect Of Preconditioning On Performance And Health Of Feeder Steers, Janie Katrin Swann
Effect Of Preconditioning On Performance And Health Of Feeder Steers, Janie Katrin Swann
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Ranchers are continuously looking for ways to produce heavier, healthier calves at sale time. There are many on-ranch management practices performed to accomplish this, including early weaning, creep feeding, preconditioning and implanting. However, over time results may be variable. Before deciding on a certain method for handling a calf crop, ranchers must carefully evaluate their own situation, including facilities, labor, feed and pasture conditions. Feedlot operators should also be aware of previous management of calves since preshipment practices may affect performance in the feedlot. In an effort to evaluate the preconditioning program in South Dakota, performance of preconditioned and nonpreconditioned …
Using Drainmod To Estimate Hydraulic Parameters In Slowly Permeable Soils, Dean D. Steele
Using Drainmod To Estimate Hydraulic Parameters In Slowly Permeable Soils, Dean D. Steele
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Numerical regression analysis of hydraulic conductivities and soil water characteristics was used to fit the water management model DRAINMOD to electrical pressure transducer measurements and model estimates of water table depth for a slowly permeable soil. Regression analysis of soil properties can replace the need for extensive field and laboratory analysis of soil properties used in the model. The method allows the water management model to be applied to drainage and sub irrigation system cost/benefit projections more quickly than when using conventional analytical approaches to input parameter determination. The objectives of the research were to evaluate the use of a …
Agroecological Studies Of Beckmannia Syzigachne Populations, Richard L. Wynia
Agroecological Studies Of Beckmannia Syzigachne Populations, Richard L. Wynia
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Germination, forage yield and quality, and inflorescence characteristics were studied in populations of Beckmannia syzigachne Fern., a valuable wetland forage species in the northern states. Germination and seedling growth differences among populations of Beckmannia from South Dakota, Montana, and Alaska were investigated. Caryopses of these populations produced simultaneously in the greenhouse under uniform growing conditions were subjected to 3 constant (15,20, and 25 C) and 2 alternating (15-30 and 20-30 C) temperature treatments. Alaska caryopses had significantly higher percent germination at the constant temperatures than did South Dakota or Montana caryopses. No significant differences among populations were detected for the …
Interaction Of Radiation With Convection In Channel Flows, Yii Hui Wong
Interaction Of Radiation With Convection In Channel Flows, Yii Hui Wong
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The interaction of convection with radiation in buoyancy induced flow in a channel is re-examined in order to better understand the effects of each flow configuration parameter. The analysis differs from that of Carpenter et al. primarily in the definition of the dimensionless temperature, which is based on the local temperature itself rather than the difference of the local and inlet temperature as chosen in. The present definition avoids the unnecessary complications introduced via the linearization of the radiative terms in which make their interpretation of the presented results rather awkward. The present results concentrate in demonstrating individually the effects …
The Effect Of Photoperiod And Melatonin On Reproductive Performance Of Anestrous Ewes, Anthony Martin Wolf
The Effect Of Photoperiod And Melatonin On Reproductive Performance Of Anestrous Ewes, Anthony Martin Wolf
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Seasonal fertility has been known to exist in the sheep industry for hundreds of years. The inability to control this seasonality has restricted year-round lamb production. Only recently has man attempted to alter this unfertile period of the year, through the use of different stimuli. The ewe produces the hormone "melatonin" in response to a dark photoperiod. In the fall, when the daily dark phase increases, one sees an increase in duration of the ewe's serum melatonin level. It is this increased melatonin during the fall that has been hypothesized to signal the onset of estrus in the ewe. Artificial …

Ozone was applied to the water at dosages of approximately 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8, 12, 16, 20 and 24 mg/1 at contact times of 2.5, 5, 20 and 30 minutes using a continuous-flow ozonation pilot system Odor intensities of these waters were then measured in terms of Threshold Odor …
Effect Of Residue And Tillage On Hard Red Spring Wheat Cultivars, Elaine M. Hall
Effect Of Residue And Tillage On Hard Red Spring Wheat Cultivars, Elaine M. Hall
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Notill seeding leaves crop residue on the soil surface which reduces wind and / or soil erosion. The residue modifies the seedbed environment compared to the black soil surface associated with conventional tillage. Seeding into residue has resulted in enhanced, similar, and reduced grain yields of hard red spring wheat (Triticunm aestivum L).

In Vivo And In Vitro Effects Of Hydralazine On Cellular Growth, Differentiation And Chromatin Structure, Allen John Fasbender
In Vivo And In Vitro Effects Of Hydralazine On Cellular Growth, Differentiation And Chromatin Structure, Allen John Fasbender
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Hydralazine has been used medicinally as an antihypertensive since 1952. Within two years after its introduction to clinical medicine, an unusual set of symptoms was noted in a significant portion of patients. This set of symptoms resembled those symptoms observed in idiopathic systemic lupus erythematosus. The fundamental problem underlying this drug-related systemic lupus erythematosus is autoimmune in nature. Hydralazine produces a characteristic profile of anti-nuclear antibodies that is unique from that present in idiopathic systemic lupus erythematosus. Other drugs such as procainamide and isoniazid have also been associated with drug-related systemic lupus erythematosus. Interestingly, these drugs differ in the antinuclear …
A Comparison Of Osmotic Adjustment And Activity Of Cell Wall Associated Enzymes During Short-Term Drought In Winter Wheat, Russell William Gesch
A Comparison Of Osmotic Adjustment And Activity Of Cell Wall Associated Enzymes During Short-Term Drought In Winter Wheat, Russell William Gesch
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A study was conducted in South Dakota to examine the affects of weather on growth and production of agronomic crops. Over a 17-year period of climatic variables were collected on a daily basis and put into weekly means values. It was reported that a frequent cause of loss for winter cereals was in early spring, when the conditions of extreme fluctuations of temperature and the rehydration state of the tissue affected survival. Osmotic adjustment is one metabolically controlled process that is compatible with the timeframe of weather change during this period which might ameliorate the adverse affects of excess free …
Test Procedures And Results For Skidtric, Gregg A. Hanson
Test Procedures And Results For Skidtric, Gregg A. Hanson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Test procedures for a battery powered, electric, skid loader were developed and implemented. These procedures divided skid-steer operation into individual segments that were more readily tested than a complete routine. These segments included loader (lifting, lowering, bucket dump, and bucket tilt-back), constant velocity draft, acceleration draft, and turning operations. Battery power, as a function of the independent variables, was used in regression analysis to obtain prediction equations for battery power and energy. These equations were combined into a computer prediction model that was used to predict the energy requirements of Skidtric for specified tasks. Skidtric was judged to operate satisfactorily …

A General Procedure To Calculate Fall Velocity Over The Full Range Of Sediment Sizes, Saher Shukri Khilfeh
A General Procedure To Calculate Fall Velocity Over The Full Range Of Sediment Sizes, Saher Shukri Khilfeh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
It has long been recognized that the transport of sediment in water conveyance channels, such as rivers, streams and channels, is a serious and somewhat baffling problem. Not only does the transport of sediment affect the water quality and deposition in reservoirs, but it also indicates increased erosion. In addition, the energy given to the movement of sediment is a loss of energy from the water stream itself insofar as its flow rate is concerned. The movement of sediment is a complex prob1em. A number of methods have been deve1oped which compute sediment load. All of these formulae and methods …
Studies Of The Prevention Of Silica Urolithiasis, Dong-Hao Lu
Studies Of The Prevention Of Silica Urolithiasis, Dong-Hao Lu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Urethral obstruction by silica calculi is a major cause of death of cattle and sheep grazing western ranges of the United States. Similar calculi problems have been found in several other countries including Canada, U.S.S.R. and Australia. Range grasses having silica contents of 4 to 7% (dry basis) appear to be the silica source. In addition, silica urinary calculi have been reported to occur in dogs from silicon of unknown origin, humans consuming large quantities of silicate antacids and rats and guinea pigs experimentally fed tetraethylorthosilicate (TES). Emerick and coworkers have found that supplemental dietary phosphate and acid-forming salts provide …
Thomas Mann's Joseph Tetralogy : Echoes Across The Coulisses, Molly Miron
Thomas Mann's Joseph Tetralogy : Echoes Across The Coulisses, Molly Miron
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In his Prelude to Volume of Joseph and His Brothers, Thomas Mann speculated about the nature of time. In several senses for Mann the time factor itself became a character and a motivating force in the novel, absorbing the author and the reader as well as the actual protagonists. In this introductory essay before he began the chronicle of the family of Jacob, Mann considered the illusory characteristics of variable time as opposed to what the reader perceives as time's reality, measurable in units of centuries, generations, and seasons. Mann set at odds the reader's mundane acceptance of time's regular …
Analysis Of Farmland Rental Markets In South Dakota, Scott Robert Peterson
Analysis Of Farmland Rental Markets In South Dakota, Scott Robert Peterson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Leasing of farmland has existed in one form or another at least since feudal times. It has been extensively used in the United States since the post Civi1 War era. "Tenant farmers" or "sharecroppers" were once considered a lower socio-economic class subject to exploitation by powerful landowners. More recently, farmland rental has been considered the first rung on the "tenure ladder", used extensively by landless persons attempting to become farm operators. This tenure ladder led eventually to full ownership and operation of farmland. The primary objective of this research effort is to reveal some of the major characteristics of farmland …
Determining Green Needlegrass (Stipa Viridula Trin.) Seed Germination And Viability, Alan Lee Rubida
Determining Green Needlegrass (Stipa Viridula Trin.) Seed Germination And Viability, Alan Lee Rubida
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Green needlegrass (Stipa viridula Trin.) is a native, cool season perennial bunchgrass common to the northern Great Plains, Good seedling vigor, rapid recovery after defoliation, high forage yields, nutritive quality, and palatability give green needlegrass potential use in range reclamation. Green needlegrass seed dormancy can cause problems to spring field establishment problems. To alleviate field establishment problems, dormant (fall) plantings have replaced spring plantings. Seed dormancy can be completely overcome in the laboratory by a 12-week viability test (12-week stratification period); however, this is impractical as a normal procedure. Currently, the Association of Official Seed Analysts (AOSA) procedure for determining …
The Effect Of Steel Fibers And Compressive Reinforcement On The Plastic Rotation Capacity And Properties Of Reinforced Concrete Continuous Beams, Nizam A. Qassem
The Effect Of Steel Fibers And Compressive Reinforcement On The Plastic Rotation Capacity And Properties Of Reinforced Concrete Continuous Beams, Nizam A. Qassem
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A reinforced concrete structure must satisfy adequate strength at ultimate load stage and serviceability at service load, and it must meet the ductility requirements. Unfortunately reinforced concrete, unlike steel, tends to fail in a relatively brittle manner due to its limited ductility, which has led to a limitation in steel quantities to be used by the ACI Code. An over-reinforced concrete section will fail by crushing of concrete before the yielding of steel, whereas in under-reinforced section the steel will yield before the crushing of concrete. Ductility plays a significant role in structures, especially those built in seismic zones or …
Effects Of Bull Exposure On Postpartum Interval And Reproductive Performance In Beef Cows, Corinne D. Naasz
Effects Of Bull Exposure On Postpartum Interval And Reproductive Performance In Beef Cows, Corinne D. Naasz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The postpartum interval is the period of time from parturition until the first postpartum estrus that is accompanied by ovulation. The postpartum interval of the suckled beef cow ranges from 46 to 168 days. A prolonged postpartum interval in the beef cow is of major economic importance in terms of cow productivity. The achievement of a 365 day calving interval requires a calving to conception interval of 80 to 85 days. Since average calving rates to a given service or insemination are only 50 to 60%, the earlier a cow begins to cycle postpartum, the greater the chance of successful …
