Population Modeling Of Greenbug Aphids In Spring Wheat, Marie Ann Coffin Jan 1988

Population Modeling Of Greenbug Aphids In Spring Wheat, Marie Ann Coffin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A computer model was developed which used weather data and initial field counts of green-bug aphids to predict the behavior of the aphid population throughout the season. The model considered the effects of heat, food supply, predati6n and rainfall on the population. Data were obtained on the life cycle of aphids grown in a controlled laboratory setting. These data were used to postulate a stochastic model of aphid growth which could be applied to a population in the field. A modified Leslie matrix model was used to predict the population's future behavior. Factors were then added to this basic model …

Twenty-five matched control subjects who were similar in age and lifestyle were also secured for this study. The experimental and control groups were pre and post tested to determine initial and final values for maximal oxygen consumption …

Algin/Calcium Gels In Solid-Muscle Structured Beef Steaks, Roger C. Johnson Jan 1988

Algin/Calcium Gels In Solid-Muscle Structured Beef Steaks, Roger C. Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Alteration of the inherent characteristics of less preferred beef carcass portions to produce products with greater consumer appeal has been the ultimate goal of structured meat research. Consumer acceptance of structured products has been limited because of (1) low retail visibility, (2) diet/health concerns due to salt addition, and (3) undesirable uncooked product appearance due to discoloration and lack of fiber orientation. Development of solid-muscle structured products would alleviate these limitations and the negative influence the less desirable carcass portions have on total carcass value. Efficacy of a binding gel containing various concentrations of algin/calcium (Alg/Ca) and adipic acid (Ad) …

Tillage And Landscape Position Effects On Soil Properties And Crop Production, Bhairav Raj Khakural Jan 1988

Tillage And Landscape Position Effects On Soil Properties And Crop Production, Bhairav Raj Khakural

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The management problems associated with utilizing a single cropping system across an undulating landscape that contains well and poorly drained soils were addressed. Results from this work will aid farmers in making their tillage and crop rotation decisions. Four tillage treatments (moldboard plow, chisel plow, ridge-till and no-till) and three cropping sequences (continuous corn, corn after soybean, and soybean after corn) were arranged in a split plot design on a well drained Beadle and poorly drained Worthing soils. Worthing soil surface has a signlficant1y lower hydraulic conductivity and higher volumetric moisture, pH, available phosphorus and potassium than the Beadle soil. …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The problem of this study was to determine if differences existed in the perceptions of selected public school instructional supervisors regarding the amount of actual and ideal time allocated for identified supervisory roles. The study was conducted during the 1986-87 school year in Virginia. A questionnaire, developed by the researcher, was field tested through a six-week pilot study with 100 instructional supervisors in Virginia. Upon validation of the instrument, it was mailed to a randomly selected sample of 363 instructional supervisors in Virginia. A total of 220 respondents (60.6%) returned the questionnaire. The problem of this study was to determine whether a relationship exists between situational leadership effectiveness of administrators in hospitals and principals in high schools in a selected geographical area. The data-gathering instruments were the Leader Effectiveness & Adaptability Description (LEAD-Self) and a one-page demographic sheet. The LEAD-Self provides a measurement of situational leadership style and leadership effectiveness based upon responses to 12 administrative decisions. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data gathered, with the Eta and Pearson's product-moment being the correlation studies used. Six research questions were explored, dealing with the relationship between the effectiveness score and the …

Lung Paraquat Content And Effects On The Lung Glutathione Antioxidant System, Nadph, And Polyamines Resulting From Intravenous Coinfusion Of Paraquat And Putrescine To Rats, Jacob R. Dunbar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Paraquat was administered to male, Sprague-Dawley rats via continous infusion, at dosage rates of 250 (LoPQ) or 500 (HiPQ) nmoles/hr for seven days. The purpose was to characterize the effects of prolonged, low blood levels of the herbicide on selected lung biochemical parameters. The efficacy of putrescine as an inhibitor of pulmonary paraquat accumulation, in vivo, was assessed in these animals by I.V. coinfusion of 2500 or 5000 nmoles putrescine/hr. Dose-dependent levels of both paraquat and putrescine were achieved by 18 hours and were maintained throughout the exposure period. Terminal lung paraquat content was also dose-dependent and up to 18-fold …

A descriptive profile of board of education members in the public school systems of North Carolina was developed; determination of legal requirements for board membership …

Quantitation Of Teratogenic Effects Of 5-Fluorouracil Administered To Mice In Vivo Or In Submerged Limb Culture, Theresa A. Sanders May 1987

Quantitation Of Teratogenic Effects Of 5-Fluorouracil Administered To Mice In Vivo Or In Submerged Limb Culture, Theresa A. Sanders

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study demonstrates the use of submerged limb culture in teratologic testing. Pregnant mice were treated on day 11 of gestation (E11, plug date = E0) with 10, 20 or 40 mg of 5-fluorouracil (FU) per kg body weight. On E17, treated and untreated fetuses were examined for gross malformations and were fixed in 95% ethanol. Reduction of limb size and digital defects, including ectrodactyly (ED), syndactyly (SD), microdactyly and polydactyly were dose-dependent. In parallel studies, pregnant mice were treated on the morning of E11 and embryos were removed either 7h (E11) or 24h (E12) later for submerged limb culture. …

Purification And Characterization Of An Inhibitor Of Thymidine Uptake From Culture Supernatants Of Human Tonsil Lymphocytes, Abdolreza Zarnegar May 1987

Purification And Characterization Of An Inhibitor Of Thymidine Uptake From Culture Supernatants Of Human Tonsil Lymphocytes, Abdolreza Zarnegar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Lymphocytes from human tonsils were cultured in the absence of serum for 3 days. In the presence of the concentrated culture supernatant the proliferative response of PBL, to con A, as measured by the uptake of ('3)H-tdr, was significantly reduced. The suppressor substance was referred to as SMAL (suppressor of mitogen activated lymphocytes). The estimated molecular weight of SMAL under nondenaturing conditions was 100,000-300,000. SMAL also suppressed the incorporation of ('3)H-tdr by a variety of mouse and human tumor cell lines. The activity of SMAL was sensitive to pronase and heating at 100(DEGREES)C for 30 minutes but insensitive to RNase. …

Adaptation Of Striped Bass To Sea Water Following Direct Transfer From Freshwater: Morphological, Biochemical, And Physiological Parameters, Judy A. King May 1987

Adaptation Of Striped Bass To Sea Water Following Direct Transfer From Freshwater: Morphological, Biochemical, And Physiological Parameters, Judy A. King

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There has been heightened interest in the biology of striped bass (Morone saxatilis) because of increased pollution in their native spawning grounds and because of their extensive use in landlocked sport fisheries. Their euryhalinity makes them an excellent species for osmoregulation studies. The objective of this research was to study the rate of adaptation of striped bass gills to sea water (3% salt) after direct transfer from freshwater using biochemical (ion transport enzyme levels), physiological (chloride efflux), and ultrastructural methods. Striped bass have specialized osmoregulatory cells located on the interlamellar and afferent surfaces of their gill filaments as shown by …
