Assimilatory Nitrate Reduction In Azospirillum Brasilense Sp7 : Mutants And Expression Of The Genes In Escherichia Coli Recombinant Strains, Kang-Yell Choi Jan 1988

Assimilatory Nitrate Reduction In Azospirillum Brasilense Sp7 : Mutants And Expression Of The Genes In Escherichia Coli Recombinant Strains, Kang-Yell Choi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The intensive study of A. brasilense that has been undertaken is due in part to the desire of microbiologists to understand its nitrogen metabolism. A. brasilense can perform all of the reactions of the nitrogen cycle except for nitrification, however, the details are not yet completely understood on any of the processes. In agriculture, A. brasilense not only supplies fixed nitrogen and nutrient to cereals; but also it significantly contributes to the loss of nitrogen from the soil by denitrification. Enormous amounts of fixed nitrogen are unfortunately lost from the soil to the atmosphere by this denitrification. The elucidation of …

Inheritance Of Nine Enzyme Loci In Sunflower (Helianthus Annuus L.) And Estimates Of Outcrossing Rates In Helianthus Germplasm Pool Ii, James Todd Gerdes Jan 1988

Inheritance Of Nine Enzyme Loci In Sunflower (Helianthus Annuus L.) And Estimates Of Outcrossing Rates In Helianthus Germplasm Pool Ii, James Todd Gerdes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Starch gel electrophoresis has been used extensively in genetic studies of numerous plant species and to determine inheritance patterns and linkage relationships of individual enzyme loci. There has been only limited use of electrophoretic techniques to study genetic relationships and population structure in annual sunflower, Helianthus annuus. The objectives of this study were to detail the inheritance of additional enzyme loci in sunflower and to use enzyme loci to determine levels of outcrossing in an open-pollinated sunflower population over a three year period. In 1957, Hunter and Markert developed the methods currently in use for starch gel electrophoresis of plant …

Development Of An Analytical Method For The Trace Determination Of Mycophenolic Acid By High Performance Liquid Chromatography Following Extraction Of The Compound From Feedstuffs, Tesfamichael Zeccarias Kahsai Jan 1988

Development Of An Analytical Method For The Trace Determination Of Mycophenolic Acid By High Performance Liquid Chromatography Following Extraction Of The Compound From Feedstuffs, Tesfamichael Zeccarias Kahsai

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Mycophenolic acid is toxic to animals consuming it beyond a certain level and possesses antitumor activity. Not many methods for its trace analysis in feedstuffs and agricultural products have been reported. Thus, it is desirable to develop a standard analytical technique for such important compounds. The purpose of this investigation is to develop a technique or method sensitive enough to determine trace quantities of the compound. The method developed is based on solvent extraction from feedstuffs and detection by high performance liquid chromatography. Solvent extraction methods have given good results with low background interferences when cleaned up by column chromatography …

The Relationship Between Selected Social And Environmental Factors And Cancer Mortality By Planning District In South Dakota, 1960-1980, Mansour Haghighatian Jan 1988

The Relationship Between Selected Social And Environmental Factors And Cancer Mortality By Planning District In South Dakota, 1960-1980, Mansour Haghighatian

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This paper investigated the association between selected social and environmental factors and age and sex-specific cancer mortality by planning district in South Dakota for 1960 to 1980. Social factors included median family income, percent of families in poverty, education, and urbanization. Environmental factors included herbicide use, pesticide use, and fertilizer use. Selected demographic variables, such as age, sex, and race were uses as control variables. Modernization theory was chosen as ·the conceptual framework. It was asserted that as the United States industrialized, standard of living also rose, and a shift from communicable diseases to degenerative illnesses as major causes of …

Images Of Kuwaiti Women : A Content Analysis Of Representative Selections From The Literature With Accompanying Annotated Bibliography, Texas Sabine Swanjord Jan 1988

Images Of Kuwaiti Women : A Content Analysis Of Representative Selections From The Literature With Accompanying Annotated Bibliography, Texas Sabine Swanjord

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This is a descriptive study of the literature about Kuwaiti women published in either English or Arabic in the 20th century. Images of Kuwaiti women are examined in order to assess the literature from which these images are drawn. The study first reviews the literature about Muslim women in the Middle East and then the specific literature about Kuwaiti women. The sociology of knowledge is discussed in terms of its theoretical imperatives after which research areas which serve as background to the study are reviewed. The study goes on to organize the literature about Kuwaiti women. A sample is drawn …

The Effect Of Mineral Filler, Asphalt Content, And Curing Time On The Properties Of Cold Mixes When Used For Low-Volume Roads, Naser A. Abdalla Jan 1988

The Effect Of Mineral Filler, Asphalt Content, And Curing Time On The Properties Of Cold Mixes When Used For Low-Volume Roads, Naser A. Abdalla

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Factors such as economy, awareness of environmental problems, and the need for conservation of energy fuels have increased the rate of emulsion use in recent years. These factors have also shifted the efforts to replace cutback asphalts with emulsified asphalts in a majority of paving applications, especially in paving mixtures. This study reports the findings of a laboratory investigation that evaluated the effect of asphalt emulsion content, percent of mineral filler, and curing time on the· design parameters and properties of emulsified asphalt-aggregate cold mixes used in low-volume road by utilizing Marshall equipment. One aggregate type (quartzite) and one type …
