Control Of Downy Brome With Combinations Of Bay-Smy-1500 And Metribuzin, James R. Smart Jan 1988

Control Of Downy Brome With Combinations Of Bay-Smy-1500 And Metribuzin, James R. Smart

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Downy brome (Bromus tectorum L.) is a severe weed problem in winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) throughout North America. Downy brome competes for space, light, nutrients in the soil, and most importantly moisture. Rydrych reported that a grower with reasonable control of downy brome can increase yield of winter wheat 6-12 bushels per acre. The lack of selective herbicides which control downy brome in winter wheat and conservation tillage practices have contributed to the spread of downy brome. Some herbicides labeled for downy brome control in winter wheat require incorporation. Incorporation of herbicides may not be compatible with reduced or …

The Meaning Of Zenocrate In Tamburlaine, Parts I And Ii, Yoon-Hee Park Jan 1988

The Meaning Of Zenocrate In Tamburlaine, Parts I And Ii, Yoon-Hee Park

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Christopher Marlowe's Tamburlaine the Great, Parts I and II are built around a single towering superman, Tamburlaine, just as three of his other plays are built around strong protagonists: Barabas, Guise, and Faustus. Most critics have acknowledged that the protagonist, Tamburlaine, is "the only unifying factor," or "the be-all and end-all of the action. "From the beginning to the end, both plays unfold while centering exclusively on the protagonist, and the protagonist powerfully dominates both plays. The other characters of the play are often referred to merely as Tamburlaine's “puppets" and serve as his foils. Furthermore, the subsidiary figures, whether …

Residual Effects Of Chloride Fertilization On Selected Plant And Soil Parameters, William Karl Schumacher Jan 1988

Residual Effects Of Chloride Fertilization On Selected Plant And Soil Parameters, William Karl Schumacher

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Although Chloride (Cl) is an essential plant nutrient, it has, in the past, not usually been considered as limiting to crop growth. However, crop yield responses, particularly with small grains, have been documented in the United States. In South Dakota grain yield increases ranging from 200 to 500 kg ha-l have been noted for spring wheat. Chloride fertilization has been shown to be profitable if responsive situations can be identified. Although Cl is known to rapidly leach through the soil in humid areas, little is known how it moves through the soil with time in subhumid areas. There is a …

Means And Variances Of Early Generation Bulked Populations In Spring Wheat As Predictors Of Derived Line Performance, Zahoor A. Swati Jan 1988

Means And Variances Of Early Generation Bulked Populations In Spring Wheat As Predictors Of Derived Line Performance, Zahoor A. Swati

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Fifteen crosses involving three high and three low-yielding hard red spring wheats, (Triticum aestivum L.), adapted inbred lines to the production conditions of South Dakota were used to assess early generation means and variances in identifying bulked populations that produced high-yielding derived lines. In addition, different generations were evaluated to determine which would best identify crosses with the greater potential for producing segregates having high-yielding ability. Traits examined in early generation bulked and spaced-planted populations and derived lines were: 1) grain yield; 2) time to heading; and, 3) plant height. Means and variances of early generation bulked populations were moderately …

Comparison Of Continuous And Discontinuous Treadmill Protocols For Elicitation Of Maximum Oxygen Uptake In Prepubescent Females, Monica Jean Severson Jan 1988

Comparison Of Continuous And Discontinuous Treadmill Protocols For Elicitation Of Maximum Oxygen Uptake In Prepubescent Females, Monica Jean Severson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to compare continuous and discontinuous treadmill protocols for the elicitation of maximum oxygen uptake in 8, 9, and 10 year old females. The research hypotheses tested were: 1. The maximum oxygen uptake of prepubescent females in liters per minute measured during a continuous treadmill protocol is not different from those values obtained from a discontinuous treadmill protocol. 2. The maximum oxygen uptake of prepubescent females in milliliters per kilograms per minute measured during a continuous treadmill protocol is not different from those values measured during a discontinuous treadmill protocol. 3. The respiratory exchange ratio …

Microprocessor Control Of A Ttl Median Filter Circuit, Scott Warren Pladsen Jan 1988

Microprocessor Control Of A Ttl Median Filter Circuit, Scott Warren Pladsen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The recent growth of the field of digital signal processing has spurred research into many new methods of data handling. One of the topics that has received some attention during the past few years is the area of median filtering. Median filtering seems to be well suited to eliminating spike noise in communications signals and is also used in image processing to sharpen the outline of an image. The basic terminology used to describe the median filtering process is given below. That section is followed by a brief explanation of the approach to median filtering used in this project. The …

Serum Progesterone Levels As A Means To Study Reproductive Function In Female Lethal Yellow Mice (Ay/A; C57bl/6j), Jon Andrew Gonsor Jan 1988

Serum Progesterone Levels As A Means To Study Reproductive Function In Female Lethal Yellow Mice (Ay/A; C57bl/6j), Jon Andrew Gonsor

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research concentrated on the reproductive problem associated with the Ay. Granholm and Breck reported that lethal yellow females never produced more than three litters when put into production at puberty. Ay/a females are as reproductively efficient as their a/a littermates at a young age. Ay/a females progressively become obese and reproductively senescent beyond the age of 120 days. The obese Ay/a females beyond 120 days exhibit lower uterine weights and depressed ovulation. Upon treatment with exogenous pituitary gonadotropins, follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (IH), the reproductively senescent AY/S! females' ovulatory rates were restored to near control levels. …

Seasonal Habitat Use, Home Range, And Dispersal Of Wild Turkeys In Southcentral South Dakota, Scott L. Laudenslager Jan 1988

Seasonal Habitat Use, Home Range, And Dispersal Of Wild Turkeys In Southcentral South Dakota, Scott L. Laudenslager

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Seasonal movements, home range, and habitat use of wild turkeys in south-central South Dakota were investigated using radio telemetry from summer 1984 to winter 1986. Spring dispersal from wintering sites ranged from 0.2 to 5.8 km (x = 2.8 km). Non-nesting females moved significantly (P ~ 0.05) farther than males. Fall movements from summer to winter habitat ranged from o.o to 5.0 km (x = 2.2 km). Marked birds always returned to summer areas used in previous years. In contrast, wintering areas changed yearly among some individuals. Home ranges for all birds in summer ranged from 46. 7 ha to …

The Effect Of Application Variables On Tank Mixtures Of Quizalofop And Bentazon, Eirc L. Larson Jan 1988

The Effect Of Application Variables On Tank Mixtures Of Quizalofop And Bentazon, Eirc L. Larson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Selective herbicides are highly specific chemicals. They must control weeds at rates which do not injure crops, they must leave no residue in the soil to injure succeeding crops, and they must leave no hazardous residue on crops. It has been extremely difficult for researchers to develop selective herbicides that adequately meet all of these goals. For example, an ideal herbicide spray effectively controls grass and broadleaf weeds simultaneously. Therefore, when farmers are plagued with a variety of weeds including both annual grasses and broadleaf weeds, there is seldom a single economical herbicide available that will completely control the weed …

Denitrification And Tillage Relationships On Two Eastern South Dakota Soils, Theresa Helen Lemme Jan 1988

Denitrification And Tillage Relationships On Two Eastern South Dakota Soils, Theresa Helen Lemme

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Denitrification is an important process involving the loss of nitrogen from agricultural soils. This study investigates denitrification on a Beadle clay loam and a Worthing silty clay loam in a landscape in Eastern South Dakota. Comparisons were made in 1986 and 1987 of these soils under four different tillage systems: Moldboard plowed, chisel plowed and disked, ridge tillage, and no tillage systems. Soil core samples (0 to 5 cm) from continuous corn plots were utilized to determine nitrogen loss by denitrification and volumetric moisture biweekly through the growing seasons. In addition, organic matter residue amount, bulk density, and precipitation were …

The Fast Hartley Transform On A Parallel Processor, Boon Pock Lim Jan 1988

The Fast Hartley Transform On A Parallel Processor, Boon Pock Lim

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In 1942, Hartley proposed a new formulation of the Fourier integral identity by using cas (wt) as the transform kernel, where cas(wt) = cos(wt) + sin(wt), is an abbreviation for cosine and sine. It is called the Hartley transform and has many properties similar to those of the Fourier transform. The important distinctions are that the Hartley transform of a real-valued function is also real valued, and the inverse transformation is operation as the direct transformation. the same integral Furthermore, its evaluation does not involve complex functions. This is a potential advantage if the transform is to be explicitly computed. …

Reforms Of The U.S. Banking System, Monica Shun-Oi Lun Jan 1988

Reforms Of The U.S. Banking System, Monica Shun-Oi Lun

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There are a number of payments systems in the U.S. These include Fedwire, Clearing House Interbank Payments System (CHIPS) and Automated Clearing House (ACH). Although the Federal Reserve administers only Fedwire and ACH, it might also have to rescue CHIPS as a creditor of last resort. There have been concerns that some of the procedures adopted by these payments systems could impose risks on the systems. The first concern is the credit risk that these systems assume by allowing receivers to get funds immediately while senders can settle the net differences until the end of the day at no cost …
