Aroyl Phosphates : The Mechanism Of Isomerization, Sandra Xiu Yan Ning Jan 1988

Aroyl Phosphates : The Mechanism Of Isomerization, Sandra Xiu Yan Ning

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The transfer of energy and its conversion from one form to another are very important in biological systems. Mammals use energy to control their environment, i.e. keeping warm and physical activity, whereas bacteria use energy primarily in chemical synthesis for their very existence as a life form depends upon rapid reproduction. There are two original sources of energy: light and oxygen, Oz. Photosynthesis and oxidative metabolism convert these energy sources via photosynthetic phosphorylation and oxidative phosphorylation into ATP (Adenine Triphosphate), which is in effect the molecular repository of energy. Thus, high energy phosphates (compounds which hydrolyze with a large negative …

Parallel Processing Of The Fast Fourier Transform, Ke Zhou Jan 1988

Parallel Processing Of The Fast Fourier Transform, Ke Zhou

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The first FFT algorithms were reported by Runge and Konig in 1924, and by Danielson and Lanczos in 1942. However, the FFT didn't receive much attention at all until Cooley and Tukey published their algorithm in 1965. The Cooley-Tukey algorithm is simple and widely used in many application software packages. Winograd developed his FFT in 1976, which is based upon the prime factor theory. It is typically faster than the Cooley-Tukey Algorithm, if the computer system has no multiplication instructions. According to the book prepared by the Digital Signal Processing Committee of the IEEE in 1979, the speed difference among …

In Vitro Rescue Of Helianthus Annuus Embryos By Ovule Culture, John C. Volin Jan 1988

In Vitro Rescue Of Helianthus Annuus Embryos By Ovule Culture, John C. Volin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Interspecific hybridization between the cultivated sunflower, Helianthus annuus L., and other Helianthus species is an important aspect of sunflower improvement, because it extends the array of genes available for use in breeding programs. Sunflower species have demonstrated resistance to many pests that affect the cultivated sunflower. Oil content and quality may also be improved through interspecific hybridization, as Helianthus species are sources of genetic variation for these traits. Attempts to cross H. annuus with sixteen other Helianthus species were only 40 % successful. It is generally assumed that failure of interspecific hybridization in sunflowers is due to abortion of the …

The main objective of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of hedging the· prime interest rate and Bank for Cooperatives seasonal rates with financial futures for South Dakota agricultural cooperatives. Most agricultural cooperatives borrow mainly from commercial banks and the Bank for Cooperatives, and the rates depend on the prime rate and Bank for Cooperatives seasonal loan rates (BC rates). This study will examine whether a local cooperative might use financial futures to hedge these two interest rates. Local cooperatives must identify whether hedging is feasible for their seasonal loan with the commercial bank or Bank for Cooperatives. Also, …

Rhetorical Analysis Of Federico Fellini's Film La Strada, Randall Scott Hanzen Jan 1988

Rhetorical Analysis Of Federico Fellini's Film La Strada, Randall Scott Hanzen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

One of the problems faced by critics in the past was a lack of critical resources that would allow for viewing a film as more than just moving pictures. Certainly, it would be difficult to understand or appreciate Fellini's use of the spiritual and metaphysical realms of reality if a critic did not have a means for such analysis. This writer believes that a rhetorical analysis serves as that means to the interpretive end. This study seeks to shed light on Fellini's definition of man's reality through its rhetorical analysis. Noted philosopher of rhetoric Kenneth Burke proclaims that a "rhetorical …

Evaluation Of Selected Methods For Estimating Flood Peaks For Small Watersheds In South Dakota, Chee Chai Kian Jan 1988

Evaluation Of Selected Methods For Estimating Flood Peaks For Small Watersheds In South Dakota, Chee Chai Kian

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The need for information about floods on small streams in South Dakota has long been recognized. For example, the magnitude and frequency of flood flows need to be considered in the design of highway structures such as bridges and culverts, in land-use planning, in establishing rates for flood insurance, in formulating emergency evacuation plans for flood-prone areas, and other planning aspects. In many instances, the project sites may be at locations where very limited flood or hydrologic data are available. Consequently, methods of flood prediction for these ungaged drainage basins have been developed. The earliest methods for estimating peak flow …
