Willa Sylbert Cather was born in December 7, 1873, in Winchester, Virginia, and Pearl Sydenstricker Buck was born in Hillsboro in the adjoining state of West Virginia nearly nineteen years later, on June 26, 1892. When they were sensitive young girls, both of them were exposed to "foreign” cultures, which were quite different from their original Victorian cultures of the East. Willa and her family moved to the Nebraska frontier when Willa was eight years old. In the Nebraska prairies of the late nineteenth century, there were many foreign immigrants who had come to settle: Swedes, Norwegians, Russians, French, Germans …

This thesis is a systematic regional study of the Sandhills of South Dakota. The Sandhills of South Dakota occupy an area of slightly more than 400 square miles in south central South Dakota and are a northward extension of the much larger expanse of Nebraska Sandhills. Their distribution in South Dakota includes the southern portions of Shannon, Bennett, Todd, and Tripp counties. The Sandhills extend northward from the South Dakota-Nebraska border approximately five miles. Their east-west extent is some 100 miles. Sand dunes comprise the prevailing surface formation of the Sandhills. The dunes resulted from erosion of the underlying loosely …

The purpose of this inquiry was to determine. the effectiveness and the effect of the Socialistic rhetoric of Helen Keller as revealed in selected speeches on behalf of the Socialist movement. For purposes of this study it was necessary to define effectiveness and effect. Effectiveness refers to how well the rhetorical choices matched the established criteria. The purpose of this study was to determine the extensiveness and the effectiveness of inductive support and deductive reasoning revealed in selected "Three Principles of the People" speeches made by Dr. Sun Yat-sen in 1924. Extensiveness, in this study, was mainly concerned with quantitative measurement how much inductive support and deductive reasoning had been employed within each selected speech. Effectiveness, on the other hand, called for a qualitative judgment--how well or how effectively the inductive support and the deductive reasoning within the speeches had matched the established criteria. Picture Selection : Editorial Reactions To Ten Violent News Photographs, Jacquelyn Ann Louise Elnor

This study examines how editors respond to a selection of news photographs that show human suffering and misfortune. This study is based on a study done in 1965 by the editors of Columbia Journalism Review. That study was an informal one in which six journalists were given ten photographs that had been published in magazines and newspapers, and asked whether they would use the photographs, and what the rationale was for their choices. This study uses the same 10 photographs used by the Columbia Journalism Review study but with 64 daily newspaper editors in the Upper Midwest. The earlier study …

Nucleophilic Substitution At Phosphorus In Six-Membered Ring Phosphate Esters, Mike Bauman

From these results the following conclusions may be drawn: 1. The stereochemistry of nucleophilic substitution at phosphorus is influenced by the basicity of the leaving group with the more basic leaving group favoring retention. 2. Lithium ion diverts the reaction to retention by forming an intimate ion-pair with the nucleophile which then attacks phosphorus. This associated ion is less reactive than the unassociated nucleophile. 3. For the retention mechanism the leaving group participates in the rate determining step. 4. The mechanism for retention entails a more sterically unfavorable configuration than for inversion.

Essential to an understanding of William Blake is the knowledge of his intense identification with the messianic "perfect prophet," described by the Old Testament prophets, St. John, and Milton, and of the thematic unity which this identification produces in his work. The principles which lead to the attainment of this prophetic role--visionary awakening--and the moment of vision itself are the raw materials for his canon and provide the framework for his three key engraved works. The principles of visionary awakening and the epiphanic moment are outlined in The Marriage of Heaven and Hell, elaborated in Milton, and extended to all …
