The Effect Of Constricted Pipe Flow On Low-Pressure Pneumatic Grain Conveyance, Daryl C. Anderson Jan 1965

The Effect Of Constricted Pipe Flow On Low-Pressure Pneumatic Grain Conveyance, Daryl C. Anderson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, mechanized farming has started to apply pneumatic systems to feed handling for livestock. These systems are divided as low-volume high-pressure, low-volume medium-pressure, and high-volume low-pressure. The latter two best fit the requirements for agricultural applications. However, the high-volume low-pressure type lacks adequate research for utilization in feeding systems. It is felt that certain aspects of this system are more advantageous than higher pressure systems, yet a number of disadvantages also exist. The high-volume low-pressure system, like in other types, has similar component parts necessary for operation. The differences among the various types of pneumatic conveyors are the …

Evaluation Of And Tentative Design Criteria For Anaerobic Lagoons As A Method Of Swine Manure Disposal In South Dakota, David Richard Curtis Jan 1965

Evaluation Of And Tentative Design Criteria For Anaerobic Lagoons As A Method Of Swine Manure Disposal In South Dakota, David Richard Curtis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The problem of disposal of animal wastes has increased with modern methods of mass producing hogs, poultry, and other livestock and livestock products. With the increase popularity of confinement housing and the purchase of feed, less land is needed to raise more livestock and less land is available for disposal of the manure produced. Several methods for the disposal of hog manure have been suggested by various authors I the fields of agriculture and engineering. These proposed solutions include: field spreading, drying, composting, and lagooning. The purpose of this research was: to determine the extent to which lagoons were being …

Turbulent Mixing And Heat Exchange In A Parallel Stream Of Air, Tek Chand Goel Jan 1965

Turbulent Mixing And Heat Exchange In A Parallel Stream Of Air, Tek Chand Goel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Turbulent mixing of air, gases of different densities, and gases of different kinds are of fundamental importance to scientists and mathematicians, and are of practical importance to engineers. Turbulence as it occurs in nature is of mysterious nature, and there are insurmountable difficulties in completely analyzing the mechanism by which it is produced. Recently with the availability of hot-wire anemometer on a commercial basis, we have been able to investigate turbulence phenomena that previously were confined to more specialized research centers. When parallel streams of air, divided by a flat plate, are allowed to mix, the mixing boundaries are extensions …

Student Attitudes Toward The Printing Industry In Two Chicago Area High Schools, Frank Arthur Ouseley Jan 1965

Student Attitudes Toward The Printing Industry In Two Chicago Area High Schools, Frank Arthur Ouseley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Before considering the importance of attitudinal measurement it would be helpful to define what an attitude is and subsequently how this definition relates to the measurement of attitudes. Ingles, after an intensive investigation concerning the fruitfulness of teaching history, concluded that the attitudes developed through the study of history are probably considerable more important than the specific knowledge that the student has acquired during his training. The implications from his rather generalized interpretations are of unlimited importance. Another reason why attitudinal measurement is important concerns the effects which attitudes have on the learning process. Learning takes place only when information …

Effects Of Wind On Falling Drops, Charles Russell Umback Jan 1965

Effects Of Wind On Falling Drops, Charles Russell Umback

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Soil erosion studies have proceeded along two basic paths in-so-far as erosion by water is concerned: 1. the measurement of soil loss and runoff caused by natural rainstorms, with pertinent characteristics of those storms and 2. The measurement of such losses when caused by artificially produced storms of arbitrarily selected characteristics. The first provides the measure for the magnitude and variability of storms as they actually occur in a given, as well as accurate measurement of losses produced by a particular storm type and intensity on a given condition of plots. The second type of storm can be produced almost …

Utilization Of The Air Permeameter To Determine The Intrinsic Permeability Of In Situ Soil, Robert A. Wiles Jan 1965

Utilization Of The Air Permeameter To Determine The Intrinsic Permeability Of In Situ Soil, Robert A. Wiles

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The first agricultural crops were grown in open areas that required minimum labor to prepare the soil for tillage. As other settlers followed, trees were cleared from the forested areas to open additional land to cultivation. The rocks and stones were removed from the fields to facilitate farming operations. There are different factors that need to be considered in the design of a drainage system, such as the permeability of the soil, the rainfall pattern and the crop rotation. The most important is the permeability of the soil profile. A knowledge of the permeability of the soil is often considered …

Creep Tension Tests On Hastelloy Alloy X Bar, Predicting Its Behavior And Applying The Data In A Design Problem, Y. V. S. Rao Jan 1965

Creep Tension Tests On Hastelloy Alloy X Bar, Predicting Its Behavior And Applying The Data In A Design Problem, Y. V. S. Rao

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Creep is a continuing deformation at elevated temperatures under constant stress. Creep data are important in the design of many machine members subjected to high temperatures. Examples of these would be steam and gas turbine components, thermal cracking equipment in oil refineries, jet air-craft, missiles, rockets and mobile reactors. The second law of thermodynamics shows us that the efficiency of an ideal heat engine can be increased by increasing the temperature of the working fluid. The optimum strength-to-weight ratio is an essential requirement in aircraft structural design. But all these facts bring us the problem of higher creep rates for …

Elastic Stress Distribution In Rectangularly Notched Members By Finite Differences, Paul Andrew Hoffman Jan 1965

Elastic Stress Distribution In Rectangularly Notched Members By Finite Differences, Paul Andrew Hoffman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The design of notched members by structural engineers has become a practice that is now being employed more frequently than in the past. This is particularly true in the aircraft, missile, automobile and shipbuilding industries where available space is necessarily a minimum. The determination of the elastic stress distribution in notched structural members is important because the introduction of a notch generally has the effect of subjecting the member to a situation of high combined stresses. The primary objective of this investigation is to obtain elastic stress distribution in rectangular notched structural members, employing the finite difference method and electronic …

The Design And Construction Of A 6-Inch Mach-Zehnder Type Interferometer And Its Use For A Study In Free Convection, Clayton W. Knofczynski Jan 1965

The Design And Construction Of A 6-Inch Mach-Zehnder Type Interferometer And Its Use For A Study In Free Convection, Clayton W. Knofczynski

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Heat transfer by free convection is a commonly encountered phenomenon and yet is difficult to analyze and evaluate. It would prove interesting and informative to obtain a view of the disturbance in the field of flow, and also quantitative data to evaluate temperature variations and analyze the heat transferred. Therefore it was proposed to build a Mach-Zehnder interferometer, not only to give a “picture” of the phenomenon but also to supply sufficient information to determine temperature distribution in the flow field and aid in the determination of the free convection coefficient. Such a versatile instrument is the Mach-Zehnder interferometer which …

Design And Testing Of Experimental Components Used On Photoelastic Analysis, Alan Rae Peterson Jan 1965

Design And Testing Of Experimental Components Used On Photoelastic Analysis, Alan Rae Peterson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Exact solutions of the stress distribution in elastic bodies are confined to a selected group of geometric configuration. The nature of irregular-shape problems prohibits a solution by closed formula or even by a general form of solution. All experimental techniques have weaknesses which limit their usage. Strain gauges give a numerical solution but only at a surface. Stress coating are materials which will fail when a prescribed stress value is reached. Such brittle coatings will show the direction, magnitude, and distribution of tensile stresses over an entire surface but they are restricted to some designated level of failure. Two dimensional …

A Procedure For The Determination And Evaluation Of The Relationship Between Accident Frequency Rates, Extent Of Experience And Chronological Age Of Operative Personnel, William Wayne Rasmussen Jan 1965

A Procedure For The Determination And Evaluation Of The Relationship Between Accident Frequency Rates, Extent Of Experience And Chronological Age Of Operative Personnel, William Wayne Rasmussen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In 1963 it was estimated that occupational injuries cost employers $4.5 billion. An additional $1 billion to $4 billion in wages were lost by employee depending on what one wishes to include. Based on a Gross National Product of approximately $585 billion in 1963, this injury cost represents a potential increase in the Gross National Product of approximately one percent. It appears that this is certainly one area of waste which would warrant further investigation, particularly in light of the present day nationwide drive for economic growth. If younger workers are indeed more susceptible to accidents, the injury costs cited …

The Effect Of Change In Moisture Content On The Load Carrying Capacity Of Three Member Nailed Wood Joints, William Theodore Welchert Jan 1965

The Effect Of Change In Moisture Content On The Load Carrying Capacity Of Three Member Nailed Wood Joints, William Theodore Welchert

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis involves the study of the effect of change in moisture content on the load carrying capacity of three member nailed wood joints. New wood truss designs developed today can be tested with truss breaking equipment. Precise structural data on wood joints in extended service conditions are inadequate to justify enthusiasm for design precision. In agricultural construction and other utility buildings, wood-nailed trusses are extensively used because of their simplicity and economy. The weakest and most unpredictable parts of a nailed-wood truss are likely to be in the joints. Thus, the logical point for design improvement is the joint. …

The Total Energy Capacity And The Instantaneous Energy Release In Springs, Suhayl M. Mamoun Jan 1965

The Total Energy Capacity And The Instantaneous Energy Release In Springs, Suhayl M. Mamoun

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this research project is to determine the total energy absorption capacity of the various types of mechanical springs in terms of mathematical equations, and use of these equations to find the instantaneous energy release. The importance of springs as machine elements stems from the fact that they can be used for absorbing mechanical energy. It must be clearly recognized that the development of the energy equations, as far as springs are concerned, is nothing but a means to an end: that the energy storing capacity of a spring should be considered as one of the primary aspects …

Laminar Combined Convection From A Nonisothermal Spining Cone: An Integral Approach, Bobba Rama Krishna Choudary Jan 1965

Laminar Combined Convection From A Nonisothermal Spining Cone: An Integral Approach, Bobba Rama Krishna Choudary

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A widely used method for the solution of various problems dealing with laminar boundary layer flows is that originated by T. von Karman and K. Pohlhausen some forty years ago. The basic idea on which their so-called integral method rests is to satisfy, for a given set of boundary conditions, prandtl’s boundary layer equations o the average in contrast to what are commonly called “exact” solutions, the latter I reality being numerical integrations of Prandtl’s equation. For two dimensional flows and certain flows with rotational symmetry δ is, in fact, the only dependent variable as long as dissipation effects are …
