Fall Velocity As Affected By Fine Material Concentration, Albert Fook-Hung Yuen Mar 1966

Fall Velocity As Affected By Fine Material Concentration, Albert Fook-Hung Yuen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Sediment transport is one of the major problems confronting the hydraulic designer of today. Various aspects of sediment are encountered in the design of irrigation and drainage canals, the planning and design of reservoirs, the control of soil erosion, and the improvement and control of rivers and floodways. Due to the many variables encountered and the complex nature of the transport mechanics this problem has defied a completely satisfactory solution. Although a great deal of study has been devoted to sedimentation problems, there is much to be accomplished. Extensive investigation must be performed to increase the knowledge of the mechanics …

An Application Of Tractive Force Theory To The Design Of Rock Spillways, Franklin Alan Williams Mar 1966

An Application Of Tractive Force Theory To The Design Of Rock Spillways, Franklin Alan Williams

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Hydraulic engineering, the application of engineering principles and methods to the regulation and control of water, has been practiced for centuries. Relics of aqueducts, canals, dams, and sewer systems have been identified (20) among the ruins of civilizations that prospered 2500 years before the birth of Christ. Historically, the hydraulic engineer has been a pragmatist choosing whatever design method was available to achieve a functional design. To this day the solution of problem in hydraulics by the rational formula of hydromechanics is often impossible because if the complex variables involved. Design by empirical formula and model treating is internationally accepted …

Evaluation Of The Effects Of Low Temperature On The Anaerobic Digestion Of Animal Wastes, Anthony Thomas Voell Feb 1966

Evaluation Of The Effects Of Low Temperature On The Anaerobic Digestion Of Animal Wastes, Anthony Thomas Voell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The history of anaerobic sludge digestion has shown an ever increasing body of knowledge concerning the causes and operation of anaerobic organic wastes. Two of the earliest methods used in he anaerobic treatment of organicwastes were cesspools and septic tanks. The theory of the design of these units was based upon retaining the waste material and allowing it to undergo bacterial decomposition. An improvement in the anaerobic treatment process was made with the advent of the Imhoff tank. In this unit the sedimentation and digestion portions were separated so that the sludge digestion unit was not in contact with the …

Ground Water Quality Variation At A Refuse Landfill, Richard Jay Sawinski Feb 1966

Ground Water Quality Variation At A Refuse Landfill, Richard Jay Sawinski

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Upon relocation of the Brookings sanitary landfill several years ago, local landowners exhibited concern that the quality of their ground water supplies might possibly be deteriorated by such a waste disposal operation. The site was an inactive gravel pit area, with many excavations extending into the shallow water table. Late in 1964, with the support of the City and State Health Department officials, the Civil Engineering Department of South Dakota State University undertook a comprehensive research project to determine the possible effects of refuse disposal on ground water quality at the landfill site. The initial work conducted by James H. …

Approximations To Structural Parameters By Various Numerical Methods, Ali Salehe-Rad Feb 1966

Approximations To Structural Parameters By Various Numerical Methods, Ali Salehe-Rad

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The study presented in this report is restricted to the investigation of the errors involved in computing flexibility and stiffness factors by approximate numerical techniques for various numbers of subdivisions of some typical structural shapes. The beams were (a) uniform EI, (b) nonuniform EI with rectangular cross-sections, and (c) I-beam cross-sections from an actual structure. The I-beam represents on span of the Big Sioux River Bridge crossing of Interstate 29 in Moody County, South Dakota, which is to be constructed in 1966. The methods in this report are (1) Newmark’s technique, (2) conjugate beam method, (3) finite difference solution of …

Performance Evaluation Of An Anaerobic Stabilization Pond System For Meat Processing Wastes, Dwayne Allen Rollag Feb 1966

Performance Evaluation Of An Anaerobic Stabilization Pond System For Meat Processing Wastes, Dwayne Allen Rollag

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The meat packing industry is decentralizing its processing operations. Many of the large metropolitan packing houses are being abandoned because they cannot readily assimilate the newer, more efficient processing methods due to the high cost of providing such improvements. These plants are being replaced by small, rural installations which are relatively inexpensive to modify. Shorter livestock haul distance are an additional economic advantage to the small plants. The advent of the stabilization pond into the meat processing waste treatment field has been due, in part, to the desire for low cost waste treatment. Also, the new, small abattoirs and packinghouses …

Development And Application Of A Computer Program For The Steady-State Thermal Analysis Of Nuclear Superheater, Delvin Gene Rapp Feb 1966

Development And Application Of A Computer Program For The Steady-State Thermal Analysis Of Nuclear Superheater, Delvin Gene Rapp

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

One of the most promising concepts for future commercial thermal reactors is the boiling-water, integral-superheat reactors (5) (9). Its economic advantage, based on the assumption that present day turbine throttle conditions can be met, is the combination of two separate effects. The first is the higher thermal efficiency that is inherent in the superheat cycle. With a higher thermal efficiency, less fuels must be consumed for each kilowatt of electricity generated. This reduces fuel costs. The second effect is the lower coolant flow rate associated with this concept. Because of a higher energy extraction per pound of steam passed through …

Chemical Variation Of Ground Water Quality In The Vicinity Of A Refuse Landfill, James Henry Mccormick Jan 1966

Chemical Variation Of Ground Water Quality In The Vicinity Of A Refuse Landfill, James Henry Mccormick

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Research on the effect of buried refuse on ground water quality provides information so that adequate safeguards can be established in such operation, while at the same time allowing maximum use of these disposal sites. Today, with over 1400 communities disposing of their refuse by sanitary landfill techniques (1-104), and many thousands more disposing of this material in open dumps on land without the degree of sanitary control recommended by health agencies, a potential danger to ground water aquifers exists. What is the magnitude of this danger, and what concern should be given it, is the basic attitude under which …

A Laboratory Analysis Of A Composite Pavement Consisting Of Prestressed And Post-Tensioned Concrete Panels Covered With Asphaltic Concrete, Cameron G. Kruse Jan 1966

A Laboratory Analysis Of A Composite Pavement Consisting Of Prestressed And Post-Tensioned Concrete Panels Covered With Asphaltic Concrete, Cameron G. Kruse

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It is an established fact that the number of trucks and automobile s has undergone a rapid increase since World War II and will continue to increase in the foreseeable future. This tremendous increase has strained the capabilities of the highway system over which the motor vehicles are operating. The increase in traffic, particularly heavy truck traffic, as brought about a need for a stronger but more flexible pavement which will withstand the heavy wheel loading without the maintenance problems that are common to many pavements which have been subjected to large traffic volumes and heavy wheel loads. There are …
