Web Buckling Of Delta Girders, Franklin P. Wang Mar 1967

Web Buckling Of Delta Girders, Franklin P. Wang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In reviewing the papers in the literature concerning delta girder bridges, 1,2,3, it is frequently found that investigations were not carried far enough to be useful for actual design in engineering offices. This is attributed mainly to one or both of the following reasons: 1. The successful outcome of test results were not based on a sound theoretical analysis of the behavior of the delta girder. 2. The investigations did not give detailed theoretical and experimental studies to obtain the optimum size and geometry of the delta girder. The delta girder consists of the same basic cross section as the …

Experimental Analysis Of Free Convection Heat Transfer From A Nonisothermal Plate, Lloyd Edwin Stoebner Mar 1967

Experimental Analysis Of Free Convection Heat Transfer From A Nonisothermal Plate, Lloyd Edwin Stoebner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Heat transfer by convection has been studied extensively since about 1900, but it is probably still the least understood of the three types of heat transfer due to its dependency on fluid dynamics. The most thoroughly studied cases are forced convection over a flat plate and free convection from a vertical isothermal plate. In a large number of engineering applications, it is necessary to calculate the heat transfer from a surface which is heated locally such as a fin heated at its root. There has been very little analytical or experimental work done for this particular case in which the …

The 3 lines on the west side of the plot were placed 3 feet apart. The next 7 lines were placed 6 feet apart. The last two lines …

Turbulent Velocity And Temperature In The Mixing Region Of Two Parallel Airstreams, Olin Thomas Sessions Mar 1967

Turbulent Velocity And Temperature In The Mixing Region Of Two Parallel Airstreams, Olin Thomas Sessions

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Two basic types of fluid motion are known, laminar and turbulent flow. Laminar flow is characterized by essentially uniform flow of fluid particles and obedience to Newton’s Viscosity Law, ¬ƒ=µdu/dy. Many fluids have been found to have dynamic viscosities (µ) which are essentially constant and are considered to be properties of the fluid. The viscosities of gases can even be derived by the kinetic theory of gases and are found to be functions of the mean free path of individual molecules. Turbulent motion, on the other hand, can be described as a flow made up of macroscopic lumps of fluid …

The Nature And The Influence Of The Work Of The Information And Education Section, South Dakota Department Of Game, Fish And Parks, Edward Riedl

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This paper deals with a study of an organization whose responsibility is to inform and educate people. This is a study of the program of the Information and Education Section, South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks. There is much confusion connected with the terms “public relations,” “publicity,” and “public information.” Definitions of these terms will result in a better understanding of this study. Emery, Ault and Agee define public relations, “as the planned effort to influence and maintain favorable opinion through acceptable performance, honestly presented, and with reliance on two-way communications.”1 Public relations is also a management function. …

Interaction Of Shear And Bending On Light Gage Steel Diaphragms, Chandrakant D. Patel Mar 1967

Interaction Of Shear And Bending On Light Gage Steel Diaphragms, Chandrakant D. Patel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the modern practice of design of structures a variety of problems confront the structural engineer. Whether he is involved in the area of aircraft structures (i.e. stressed skin structures) or complex immovable structures, the problems are seldom simple. In the design of stressed skin structures the complexity and the refinements of analysis methods, combined with the economics of weight saving, do create many problems to be solved. Interaction of multiple force systems are among the problems of the engineer. Many types of interaction occur in practical structures. Some interaction behavior is predictable though routine stress analysis such as the …

Planned Educational Progress In The Mitchell Public School System, Donald Jesse Mclean Feb 1967

Planned Educational Progress In The Mitchell Public School System, Donald Jesse Mclean

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There is but one major purpose for the existence of the public schools in the American society. That purpose is to provide the best possible education for the nation’s children. Several elements are required to make this successful program a reality within a given community. The school board and administration must provide for at least three important ingredients, the first being a system of well-designed school buildings. The second is the employment of well- prepared teachers and the third is a well-planned curriculum. To accomplish a successful program it is necessary to continually evaluate all three areas. In doing so …

Investigation Of Combine Header Losses During Grain Sorghum Harvest, Vern Earl Matter Feb 1967

Investigation Of Combine Header Losses During Grain Sorghum Harvest, Vern Earl Matter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The source and exact date of the introduction of grain sorghum into the United States has not been agreed upon, but it is generally agreed that it was sometime during the middle of the nineteenth century. The taller cane varieties were widely grown for syrup, sugar, and forage, but the strictly grain varieties were not accepted into the grain belt region until the 1950’s. It was at this time that the shorter varieties, those which could be harvested with a conventional combine, were sufficiently improved to compete with corn as a grain crop. Grain sorghum’s characteristics; being more resistant to …

A Follow-Up Study Of South Dakota State University Graduates With A Major In Industrial Arts 1951 Through 1966, Robert Vernon Lee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Education is not an end in itself. It is only a means to an end. This end is usually away from the educational institution itself. There are no doubt several methods for evaluating the effectiveness that the educational institution is achieving in its endeavor to prepare its graduates toward the desired goals. The degree of proficiency in the individual subjects can be tested while the student is in school. How the person is doing after graduation is a major part of the true test of his overall education. Evaluation becomes more difficult after the student has graduated. This is due …

Elastic Stress Distribution In And Stability Of Rectangularly Notched Plates Axially Loaded By Uniform Compression, Mahir M. Kanan Feb 1967

Elastic Stress Distribution In And Stability Of Rectangularly Notched Plates Axially Loaded By Uniform Compression, Mahir M. Kanan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, the design of notched members has been a challenge to structural, mechanical and aeronautical engineers. Notched members are frequently used in the aircraft, missiles, automobile, and ship building industries where available space is limited to a minimum. More often notches are needed for various other reasons as the passage of electrical wire bundles, hydraulic and air conduits or other structural members. Sometimes a notch serves as a lightening measure or as an inspection access opening. More precise solutions in determining the critical buckling loads are needed to replace guess and approximate solutions. This is due to the …

Hargett as a means of providing a more economical pavement for the high traffic volumes and heavy wheel loads that are now carried by our modern highways. …

Analysis Of Heat Transfer From Circular Or Square Fins, Yun-Seng Huang Feb 1967

Analysis Of Heat Transfer From Circular Or Square Fins, Yun-Seng Huang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It has been recognized that an increase in the rate of heat transfer to or from a solid body can be accomplished by extending surfaced called fins. There are a variety of fins such as rectilinear or parabolic fins protruding from a flat wall, or thin circular or rectangular fins on a tube. In all cases the heat transfer designers are interested in the optimum heat loss or gain. Considerable experimental work has been done in order to establish the empirical values of convective heat transfer coefficient to predict the amount of heat transfer from a particular fin configuration. The …

A Proposed Demonstration City For The Oahe Irrigation Development, Frederick Daryl Hejl Feb 1967

A Proposed Demonstration City For The Oahe Irrigation Development, Frederick Daryl Hejl

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It is believed that existing metropolitan development problems may be greatly alleviated by reducing the migration of the agrarian people to the urbanized areas. If we are to reduce the migration of our agrarian population to urban areas, we must provide them with a higher standard of living and an increased earing capacity. It is the purpose of this thesis to make a rational investigation of a demonstration city designed for the purpose of providing the modern farmer with the desirable features normally associated with urbanized development. The use of a demonstration city was suggested by Professor Hargett of South …

The Ecology Of The Nitrogen-Fixing Azotobacter And Klebsiella In Selected South Dakota Lakes, Paul A. Gillespie Feb 1967

The Ecology Of The Nitrogen-Fixing Azotobacter And Klebsiella In Selected South Dakota Lakes, Paul A. Gillespie

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The importance of nitrogen in an aquatic ecosystem is quite well known. Nitrogen, being originally derived from the atmosphere, enters into a complex cycle involving both the plant and animal components of the ecosystem. The nitrogenous compounds of natural waters may be broken down into the main categories according to their source, either allochthones or autochthonous. Allochthones nitrogen is that derived from the outside sources and includes those compounds carried into the lake by precipitation, by surface runoff containing terrestrial nitrogen, or by the inflow of ground water. Autochthonous nitrogenous compounds are those which result from the fixation of elemental …

Stress Distribution In And Deflection Properties Of Tri-Plate Beams In The Plastic Range, Richard Clarkson Cline Jan 1967

Stress Distribution In And Deflection Properties Of Tri-Plate Beams In The Plastic Range, Richard Clarkson Cline

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Tri-plate beams combine versatility, economy, and strength in steel design. These beams have many applications which indicate increased efficiency and economy in long-span plate girder construction. Their structural advantages are almost unlimited. Tri-plate beams are fabricated by welding three different types of steel to form an I-section. Each flange and the web of the section is fabricated out a different yield strength steel. Because the flanges of a beam contribute most of its movement resistance, the use of high strength steel of in the flanges is desirable. However, in tri-plate beams, the tension flange consists of a higher strength steel …

A Method For Characterizing The Noise Produced By An Agricultural Tractor In Terms Of The Acoustic Power And Directivity, Tom Shepherd Chisholm Jan 1967

A Method For Characterizing The Noise Produced By An Agricultural Tractor In Terms Of The Acoustic Power And Directivity, Tom Shepherd Chisholm

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In agriculture, as in the civic, military and industrial areas, excessive noise is a problem that must be recognized. Tentative criteria have been established that specify the maximum noise levels that people can be exposed to for various time periods without receiving permanent hearing damage. In many cases, the noise produced at the operator’s location by agricultural machines is considerably above the maximum safe level for continuous daily exposure. The seriousness of the problem is further emphasized when it is realized that many young men in their teens are operating agricultural machines. The hearing damage that they receive will be …

Effects Of A Sanitary Landfill On The Subsequential Uses Of The Related Ground Water, Gary Emery Cason

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In 1960 the city of Brookings purchased a quarter section of land for a sanitary landfill. The site was located approximately two miles south of the city and was an inactive gravel excavation area prior to being used as a refuse disposal site (1-19). In the future, other parts of the quarter section, which are presently being used for farming operations, will be converted to fill areas as a need arises. The Brookings refuse disposal site is not operated as a conventional sanitary landfill, where all refuse is deposited in one cell, compacted, and covered without burning. Rather, the refuse …

A Study Of Shearing Resistance In Asphaltic Concrete By Multi-Stage Triaxial Testing, Jahanbakhsh Behnam Jan 1967

A Study Of Shearing Resistance In Asphaltic Concrete By Multi-Stage Triaxial Testing, Jahanbakhsh Behnam

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The current demands for increasing the structural performance of flexible pavement are forcing highway engineers to depart from empirical design methods and develop design procedures based on the basic properties of the materials used. The empirical design methods were considered adequate for many years in view of the requirements for a low load carrying capacity and the high cost of the technological refinements required for a rational design approach. The rational design approach has been precluded by the lack of design data regarding basic material properties of asphaltic concrete. The empirical testing procedures that have been used extensively in the …

Measurement Of Vertical And Horizontal Hydraulic Conductivities On An Undisturbed Soil Core, R. Kent Anderson Jan 1967

Measurement Of Vertical And Horizontal Hydraulic Conductivities On An Undisturbed Soil Core, R. Kent Anderson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Permeability is the physical property of soil which enables it to pass or conduct air or water through is macropores. This should not be confused with the infiltration rate, a term expressing the rate at which water will enter the soil surface. Whereas the infiltration rate is influenced by the hydraulic slope, permeability is not (12, p. 153)*. A term which is often confused with permeability is hydraulic conductivity. Hydraulic conductivity is a velocity term, or (L/T), expressing the rate at which a fluid passes through the soil. The specific need for hydraulic conductivity and permeability measurements is to determine …
