A Pilot Plant Study To Determine The Treatability Of Combined Domestic And Milk Wastes In An Aerated Lagoon, Allen M. Vanden Hoek

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The milk processing industry commonly produces large quantities of high-strength waste. Frequently, a milk processing plant is located in a small agricultural community in which it is the only sizable industry. Because of this, the wastewater from the milk plant may cause overloading of the wastewater treatment facilities of the community. This situation exists in Volga, a small town in eastern South Dakota. The city of Volga, with an estimated 1967 population of 840, has been treating the domestic wastewater plus the industrial waste from the relatively large milk processing plant by utilizing a stabilization pond system. This type of …

The Retention Of Fallout Particles On Roofs Having Different Slopes, Arden B. Sigl Feb 1969

The Retention Of Fallout Particles On Roofs Having Different Slopes, Arden B. Sigl

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Since World War II the continual buildup and spread of nuclear arms has produced a pressure situation between nations. As more and more nations become nuclear powers and continue to expand their arsenals, the chance of a nuclear attack, either by accident or by specific intent, increases. If a full-scale nuclear attack should develop, the only chance of survival would rest -with a fully prepared population. Even with a fully prepared population many would not survive. The National Fallout Shelter Program is helpful in preventing casualties in the event of a nuclear attack. Studies show, however, that such casualties would …

The Influence Of Anaerobic Pretreatment On The Treatability Of A Milk Waste, Jerry Lee Siegel Feb 1969

The Influence Of Anaerobic Pretreatment On The Treatability Of A Milk Waste, Jerry Lee Siegel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Both anaerobic and aerobic treatment of wastewater has been used for many years. Some of the common aerobic treatment systems include oxidation or stabilization ponds, activated sludge, trickling filters, and aerated lagoons. Anaerobic treatment has been most commonly used for digestion of sewage sludge. However, septic tanks, anaerobic lagoons, and anaerobic activated sludge (contact stabilization) units are used to treat wastewater anaerobically. More recently, the two systems have been used in combination, with the anaerobic system preceding the aerobic one. This type of treatment has been used primarily for lagooning of industrial wastes, and most commonly for meat-packing wastes. In …

Investigation Of The Dielectric Properties Of Grain At Microwave Frequencies, Arthur A. Kruse Jan 1969

Investigation Of The Dielectric Properties Of Grain At Microwave Frequencies, Arthur A. Kruse

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The components of the complex dielectric constant of feed grains are obtained for the 8.5 to 12 gHz frequency range. The short-circuited wave guide method is employed to provide null-shift data for computer calculation of the first-order approximation of the real part of the complex dielectric constant under the simplifying assumption of negligible loss. Correction to this value is then made, where appreciable, by calculating the loss tangent from attenuation data independently obtained for the grains. The imaginary part of the complex dielectric constant then is obtained by multiplying the loss tangent by the real part. Curves of the real …

Scheduling And Position Control Of Hospital Personnel, Larry Eugene Schmidt Jan 1969

Scheduling And Position Control Of Hospital Personnel, Larry Eugene Schmidt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A review of the literature indicates that previous studies have not provided an effective scheduling technique which will comply both with the restrictions of a set weekend-off sequence and of modern employment laws. Most hospitals are required to comply with the wage and hour laws of their state and, therefore, must schedule within this restriction. In a large number of cases, the hospital and the staff members have agreed upon some set weekend off sequence, thus placing an additional restriction on the scheduling procedure. The concept of position control is not mentioned in the literature. Preliminary investigation by this author …

Heat Transfer By Numerical Solution For A Class Of Radiating Fins, Jia-Bo Hwang Jan 1969

Heat Transfer By Numerical Solution For A Class Of Radiating Fins, Jia-Bo Hwang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It has long been known that the heat transfer from a solid body to an ambient fluid can be increased by increasing the surface area of the solid body. Extended surfaces, or fins, are indispensable for compact heat exchangers. Geometrically, fins may be classified as straight fins, annular fins, and rod fins or spines. In most applications of fins, a fluid is circulating inside the fin-supporting pipe while the outside is exposed to another ambient fluid. The purpose of fin analysis is to find the temperature distribution in the fin and the heat transfer from the fin to the ambient …

Penny-Shaped Crack In An Elastic-Plastic Solid, Mohammad Hossein Sadeghi Jan 1969

Penny-Shaped Crack In An Elastic-Plastic Solid, Mohammad Hossein Sadeghi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The field of fracture mechanics has been of great interest to scientists for many years. In 1776, Coulomb, a French scientist, proposed a certain criterion - for yielding. This idea was later developed by an Italian researcher Tresca. More recently, Weibull, a German· scientist, studied the statistical aspect of fracture. In 1913, Inglis derived the mathematical formulae for the stress distribution around an elliptical void, and has demonstrated that for a very narrow ellipse (say crack) the stress concentration factor becomes very large. In 1921, A.A. Griffith and, a British scientist, was led by this idea to propose his theory …

Cost Analysis Of Precast Prestressed Composite Pavement On U.S. Highway 14-Bypass, Wayne R. Haug

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Because of the increase in heavy truck traffic, the need has developed for a stronger pavement to carry increasing wheel loads. These loads have usually resulted in thicker pavements which increases the cost. In some parts of the country the aggregates needed for pavements are scarce, making it necessary to transport the aggregates over long distances to the construction site. This longer haul increases the pavement cost and makes it necessary to investigate other methods of construction. A recent pavement development utilizes prestressed concrete. Prestressed concrete is composed of concrete prestressed with high strength steel. Concrete has a high compressive …

A Time-Lapse Photography Study Of Free Stall Housing For Dairy Calves, James L. Reeves Jan 1969

A Time-Lapse Photography Study Of Free Stall Housing For Dairy Calves, James L. Reeves

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As a principal means of herd replacement and expansion, the dairy calf is vital to the success of a dairy enterprise. High mortality rates among dairy calves, frequently as high as twenty percent, are very costly to the dairyman. Besides paying the high cost of losing a calf, the dairyman must find a replacement for the animal. Obtaining a herd animal from outside sources involves the risk that the replacement may be of lower quality than was the lost calf. Through careful selection of animals and a well-planned breeding program, a good farm manager will find raising his own replacement …

Computer Evaluation Of Error-Correcting Codes For Pcm Telemetry, William W. Goddard

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Communication in a broad sense is simply transferring information of some sort from one point to another, usually by means of electrical signals. The sender and the receiver of the information may be either man or machine. If the information to be transferred is in a numerical form, the system is called a Digital Data Communication System. This type of system is usually employed in machine-to-machine communication, but may be applied to transferring other types of information by first converting that information into a numerical (digital) form. In today's typical Digital Data Communications, the numerical data is converted to binary …

A Mathematical Model Of A River Basin, Leroy John Petrick Jan 1969

A Mathematical Model Of A River Basin, Leroy John Petrick

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The utilization of our rivers by population and industrial activities has increased dramatically in recent years. Since the number of rivers available has remained constant, a need has been created to optimize the utilization. In order to optimize, the effects on the physical properties of the river caused by changes in utilization must be determined. Quantity, the amount of water flowing in the river, along with quality, the value of the water for further utilization, are physical properties of the river. Variations in these two properties measure the effects caused by changes in the utilization. The utilization within a basin …
