Properties Of Six South Dakota Bovine Picornaviruses, Janet Marie Mattson
Properties Of Six South Dakota Bovine Picornaviruses, Janet Marie Mattson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Since the first enterovirus isolates in 1957 and rhinovirus isolation in 1962, more than 600 isolations of bovine picornaviruses have been reported. Previous workers have been concerned primarily with serological comparisons among their own isolates. Only two viruses, LCR4 and BEV I, are available to investigators for serologic comparison. Picornaviruses have been isolated from animals with. respiratory diseases, diarrhea, and histories of abortions. Interest has not been that great because of the vast number of strains isolated, and at present, the studied strains have no disease attributed to them. Little has been done with these strains of virus except to …
Effect Of Planting Method And Seeding Rate On The Establishment Of Alfalfa Under Dryland And Irrigation, Lloyd H. Hansen
Effect Of Planting Method And Seeding Rate On The Establishment Of Alfalfa Under Dryland And Irrigation, Lloyd H. Hansen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Production of forage is one of South Dakota's greatest agricultural assets. The South Dakota Crop and Livestock Reporting Service indicated that 2,456,000 acres of alfalfa were harvested for hay in South Dakota in 1971 with an average yield of 1.55 tons/acre. In the future, irrigation will increase forage production and add a new dimension to South Dakota's agriculture. South Dakota ranked eighth among states in all cattle and calves on January 1, 1972. Full stands of alfalfa are essential for the production of high yields of quality forage for this growing livestock industry. Satisfactory establishment of alfalfa with a companion …

Model Study Of Laterally Loaded Piles In Sand, Jeong- Shwu Liu
Model Study Of Laterally Loaded Piles In Sand, Jeong- Shwu Liu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The most common function of piles is to transmit foundation loads which cannot be adequately supported at a certain level down to a depth at which adequate support is available. The classification of piles in terms of loading may be considered as vertically or laterally loaded. The laterally loaded pile is a structural member which sustains transverse loads in a similar way a beam does. The lateral force that the pile foundations is subjected to may be induced by earthquake, water waves, moving vessels, wind force, and lateral earth pressure, etc. Early techniques for analyzing laterally loaded pile foundations completely …

A Comparative Study Of Nonparametric Methods For Pattern Recognition, Sangkoo F. Hahn
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The main objective of this thesis is to determine and compare the classification error probabilities of several nonparametric methods to parametric ones in practical or near practical conditions using computer simulation. The usefulness of the Asymptotic Relative Efficiency (ARE) is also observed. The ARE is used to compare one algorithm with another in the limit case conditions which are far from practical circumstances. Details of the ARE concept is given in Chapter II and some of the literatures. The next objective is the investigation of the complexity of the several algorithms studied. Many investigators are implementing their algorithms on computers, …

Modified Dugdale Model, Prem Chandra Gupta
Modified Dugdale Model, Prem Chandra Gupta
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A precise determination of the influence of plastic yielding on the deformation and failure at a crack tip is needed for accurate predictions of the behavior of cracked bodies under static load large enough to cause fracture, and subcritical repetitive loads which cause fatigue. The catastrophic growth of cracks in plates under monotonically increasing load depends on a number of factors. A general view concerning the behavior of material at the leading edge of a crack is that plastic flow and subsequent fracture of the material is influenced by factors such as strain hardening, strain rate, the state of stress, …
Comparative Analysis Of Numerical And Integral Methods For Calculating Turbulent Compressible Flow, Ronald James Greve
Comparative Analysis Of Numerical And Integral Methods For Calculating Turbulent Compressible Flow, Ronald James Greve
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The calculation of boundary layer parameters requires knowledge of the turbulent shear which, with our present incomplete knowledge of turbulence, must rely on empirical relationships. Another well-known problem is the non-linearity of the boundary layer equations. Early calculations rely on the well-known Von Karman integral equations but with the advent of the large digital computers, finite difference methods are presently commonly used. For calculation of the incompressible boundary layer there are two popularly used methods. A comprehensive comparison of this type of approximate method assuming different velocity profiles is given by Taylor. The second is a purely numerical method using …
The Role Of Agriculture In South Dakota's Economy : An Approach To Analysis, Mahlon George Lang
The Role Of Agriculture In South Dakota's Economy : An Approach To Analysis, Mahlon George Lang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Dependency of the state's economy upon the agricultural sector demands that economic research and public policy with respect to agriculture be based upon a more refined understanding of the magnitude and nature of the relationship between the farm and nonfarm economies. Ideally, the earliest stages of decision-making in government grow out of carefully developed research into the likely outcomes of alternative public policy decisions. At the macroeconomic level, such research requires a firm grasp of the complex chain of events which will occur as a result of changes in policy toward agriculture. At present, this chain of events is only …
The Scheduling Of Patients In A Physician's Office, Viswanath Gowtham
The Scheduling Of Patients In A Physician's Office, Viswanath Gowtham
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this investigation was to design a procedure by which an appointment scheduling system could be developed in which 75 percent of the punctual patients would be seen by the physician within fifteen minutes of their appointment tithes, and to test the system in an actual clinic situation. It was also decided that certain results would be tested for statistical significance. To devise an appointment system that would yield optimum benefits to the patients, to the physicians, and to the clinic as a whole, proper consideration must be given to the type of physician/patient interaction taking place in …
Automatic Control Of A Closed Conduit Cutback Irrigation System, Richard E. Kraft
Automatic Control Of A Closed Conduit Cutback Irrigation System, Richard E. Kraft
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The total supply of water on the earth today is about the same as it was thousands of years ago. It is estimated that by the year 2020, 1,380 billion gallons of water will be used every day to satisfy the needs of 468 million people in the United States. Priorities will therefore have to be established to allocate the limited supply of water among the alternative users. One criterion, based on an economic analysis of the user, for making the allocation decision is presented by Reynolds. Unfortunately, agriculture has been awarded a rather low priority level as compared to …

A Special Purpose Hybrid Computer, H. Ganesh
A Special Purpose Hybrid Computer, H. Ganesh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Electric heating of buildings and houses is becoming more and more competitive with conventional heating methods. A survey in the magazine, "Electrical World," indicates 29 million houses will be electrically heated by 1980 in USA. Ease of control, flexibility in operation, competitive tariff rates of electrical energy, and cleanliness are some of the major factors responsible for this new trend. Under certain special circumstances, even if electrical energy is more expensive, it may be preferred to conventional heating methods due to the above listed advantages. Because of these trends, electric utility companies involved in electric heating of buildings are faced …
A Study Of Groundwater Degradation Resulting From Wastewater Treatment By Lagooning, Douglas Carl Jensen
A Study Of Groundwater Degradation Resulting From Wastewater Treatment By Lagooning, Douglas Carl Jensen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
During the past quarter century, the utilization of lagoons as a means of waste treatment has increased dramatically. Communities which utilize this means of waste treatment tend to consider the sewage lagoon as providing complete or final treatment. Consideration was not given to problems caused by the treated waste after it was removed from the immediate environment. In the past few years there has been an increasing demand that the environment be protected, and the methods of waste disposal have come under scrutiny. It has been found that the elements causing eutrophication of lakes and reservoirs exist in substantial amounts …

Operation Of Induction Motor Open-Delta Transformer Banks, Gautam C. Das
Operation Of Induction Motor Open-Delta Transformer Banks, Gautam C. Das
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Induction motors and transformers are among the earliest electrical equipment to be manufactured. The squirrel-cage induction motor has been studied very widely from the time of Tesla and Ferraris in 1889. The operation of a squirrel-cage induction motor with an unbalanced supply voltage has also been studied in great detail. Yet there is little mention of an induction motor operating on an open-delta or vee-connected transformer bank in textbooks. The open-delta transformer connection is the equivalent of the delta-delta connection with one transformer removed. The vee-connection is equivalent to a star-delta connection with one transformer removed; the primary neutral must …
A Study Of Underground Cable As Applied To A Single-Phase Circuit And A Paralleled Overhead-Underground Single-Phase Circuit, Eugene A. Christianson
A Study Of Underground Cable As Applied To A Single-Phase Circuit And A Paralleled Overhead-Underground Single-Phase Circuit, Eugene A. Christianson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Growing concern for the preservation of the natural beauty of this country has spurred the development of underground cable. Overhead circuits, which once cluttered the landscape, are being retired and underground circuits are being installed. At new development sites, whether rural or urban, the question of installing underground circuits is being considered. The advantage of added beauty is not the only favorable consideration for underground distribution systems. In the Midwest, the unpredictable weather often becomes a formidable opponent of the electric utility. Since the underground cable is buried in the earth, the hazards of wind, ice, and lightning are either …
The Effects Of Identified Student Characteristics On Their Understanding Of Science, Patricia Mutch Cheeseman
The Effects Of Identified Student Characteristics On Their Understanding Of Science, Patricia Mutch Cheeseman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study-was undertaken to try to identify which factors most influence the process of learning science in an ISCS Year I classroom. Because of the breadth of the subject, it has seemed desirable to limit the factors to be considered to those which could be termed "characteristics" of the students. Therefore, recognizing the fact that characteristics alone cannot present the whole picture, occasional mention will be made of other contributing elements. It should be understood that only the characteristics to be named in a later section were included in the statistical analysis. It was expected that no specific student characteristic …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study was conducted to determine conditions under which natural tree seedlings establish adjacent to a young reservoir in a grassland biorne. Twenty-seven belt transects extending from typical prairie through the terrestrial succession zone to the shoreline were mapped along Big Bend Reservoir (Lake Sharpe) in central South Dakota. Twenty-five of the transects were located to include natural tree seedlings. The transects were grouped according to parent material, as determined from State Geological maps. Results indicated that natural tree seedlings occurring on glacial outwash or loess are farther from the reservoir both horizontally and vertically (elevation) than those occurring on …
Telemetered Cardiac Responses And Energy Expenditures Of Two Women Engaging In Intercollegiate Basketball, Sandra Ann Bode
Telemetered Cardiac Responses And Energy Expenditures Of Two Women Engaging In Intercollegiate Basketball, Sandra Ann Bode
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The role of women participating in athletics is becoming accepted as being a part of the educational process of the feminine sex. For many years such participation has been restricted due to customs, prejudices, and the lack of objective information as to what really happens physiologically to women while taking part in activity of varying stages of strenuousness. Is physical activity physiologically harmful to young women? Can a young woman withstand exercising at high heart rate levels for extended periods of time? The recent upsurge of women's basketball on the secondary and higher education levels behooves interested physical educators and …
Digital Solution Of Power-Flow Problems By Newton's Method Of Using A Hybrid Matrix, Prem K. Bahl
Digital Solution Of Power-Flow Problems By Newton's Method Of Using A Hybrid Matrix, Prem K. Bahl
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The last decade and a half has witnessed dramatic developments in the application of digital computers for solving power-flow problems. Previously these problems were analyzed on the direct analog computers called a-c calculating boards. With the enormous growth of the interconnected power systems during this period of time, digital computers established a distinct advantage over the analog computers for such reasons as: (a) Their ability to analyze large-size systems (with such features as automatic tap setting, automatic area interchange control, and control of reactive constraints of generators). (b) Elimination of human error in reading data and recording information on the …
Parameters Of The Super-Beta Transistor, Ho-An Au
Parameters Of The Super-Beta Transistor, Ho-An Au
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Transistors with current gains of 1,000 to 10,000 at collector current levels as low as 1 µA can now be made in discrete and in monolithic form. These devices are generally called super-beta or super-gain transistors. It is well-known that a narrow base width results in a high-beta transistor. As the emitter is diffused more deeply into the base, reducing the base width, the current gain will increase. But there is a trade-off between breakdown voltage and current gain. When the emitter is deeply diffused, the depletion region of the collector-base junction may penetrate the base and reach through to …
Analysis Of Selected Knife Fertilizer Applicators For Grassland Improvement, Vincent James Alsaker
Analysis Of Selected Knife Fertilizer Applicators For Grassland Improvement, Vincent James Alsaker
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Soil nutrients need to be replenished from year to year. Nitrogen is a primary structural block in· proteins, chlorophyll, and many other compounds of plant and animal matter. One method of nutrient replenishment is to apply commercial fertilizer. This is especially important for pastures and grassland since very little organic matter is annually returned and mixed into the soil by cultural practices. Anhydrous ammonia, NH3, is one of the common nitrogen carrier fertilizers. Nitrogen fertilizers include anhydrous ammonia, which is handled as a liquid under pressure, liquid solutions, and nitrogen compounds in a granular state. Anhydrous ammonia injected beneath the …

Sub-Critical Growth Of Cracks Under Longitudinal Shear, Bhubanesh K. Agarwal
Sub-Critical Growth Of Cracks Under Longitudinal Shear, Bhubanesh K. Agarwal
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
It is a formidable task to find exact solutions to elastoplastic problems even for plane strain or plane stress and yet more so for three dimensional problems. Some investigators tried to analyze the problem of growth of the plastic zone from the tips of cracks or notches by introducing certain models such as those of Dugdale, Barenblatt and Wnuk. Dugdale, led by an ingenious intuition, proposed that the plastic deformation at the crack tip is entirely confined to a narrow-tapered zone extending in the crack plane. Barenblatt has introduced a modulus called "cohesive modulus" in order to exp lain the …
One Way Of Stabilizing A Bipedal Walking Machine, Gerald Paul Berger
One Way Of Stabilizing A Bipedal Walking Machine, Gerald Paul Berger
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A feedback control system for a bipedal walking machine model given in previous study is presented and analyzed. The bipedal model is first simplified and then equations of motion are derived. Criteria for stability are chosen and different control systems are briefly considered. In the survey of control systems available, it is shown that the sampled-data control system with a large sampling period has some advantages in the practical realization. Such a sampled-data feedback control is analyzed in some detail to determine its control potential. The sampled-data control system analyzed uses a predictive analog control algorithm. The analysis of the …
Structural Performance Of A Precast Prestressed Concrete Composite Pavement On U.S. Highway 14 - Bypass, Eugene A. Dietz
Structural Performance Of A Precast Prestressed Concrete Composite Pavement On U.S. Highway 14 - Bypass, Eugene A. Dietz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Between 1962 and 1970, five Master of Science Candidates in Civil Engineering at South Dakota State University have written theses on the feasibility, performance, and cost of prestressed concrete pavements. In 1962 Gorsuch conducted laboratory tests on the structural performance of precast panels. By using half-scale panels with dimensions 12 feet long, 2 feet wide and 2 inches thick, he determined that when the panels were laid in the transverse direction they acted as a single slab and behaved elastically beyond the yield point. Kruse made further laboratory tests in 1966 to evaluate the feasibility of prestressed pavement and make …

Similitude Study Of Airflow Characteristics And Evaluation Of Ridge Vent Design For An Open Front Confinement Beef Barn, Ivar R. Dybwad
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Predictions for the future indicate that beef cattle production will continue to increase. The U. S. Department of Agriculture has estimated that the demand for red meat would increase by over 60 per cent between 1958 and 1975. Beef consumption in the United States is 80 to 85 pounds per capita per year. However, some light meat, turkey and chicken will be substituted for red meat, but due to the continuing increase in human population, the production of beef will have to increase to meet the domestic need. Following the trend of the last few years, more beef cattle production …
