Tracking Continuous Non-Differentiable Trajectories In Euler–Lagrange Systems With Continuous Dynamics, Nilay Kant Jun 2026

Tracking Continuous Non-Differentiable Trajectories In Euler–Lagrange Systems With Continuous Dynamics, Nilay Kant

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Tracking controllers for Euler–Lagrange systems are designed under the assumption that reference trajectories are continuous, and at least twice differentiable with respect to time. However, this assumption precludes several use cases, such as when a robot end-effector must track a path with corners at constant speed. This paper introduces the control design for tracking continuous but non-differentiable trajectories in fully actuated Euler–Lagrange systems that have continuous-time dynamics. The proposed controller combines a continuous feedback law with impulsive inputs, that are intermittently applied at the instants of non-differentiability. A Lyapunov stability analysis establishes global exponential convergence of the tracking error to …

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Under long-term high stress and dynamic disturbances, damage accumulation within underground coal masses can induce sudden instability, posing a considerable threat to coal mine safety. Real-time acquisition of coal damage information is essential for disaster prevention and control. This study proposes a coal damage and fracturing monitoring approach based on a carbon fiber composite mortar (CFCM) coating. By applying the CFCM coating to coal specimen surfaces and monitoring resistance changes, the dynamic evolution of damage can be tracked. The study combines experimental mechanical loading, continuous electrical resistance monitoring and acoustic emission recording with detailed numerical modelling to comprehensively evaluate sensing …

The Fivestar Method: An Interchangeable Intervention For Ptsd Nightmares And Waking Traumatic Events, Gregory Sparrow, Valerie Leija, Mark Thurston Jun 2026

The Fivestar Method: An Interchangeable Intervention For Ptsd Nightmares And Waking Traumatic Events, Gregory Sparrow, Valerie Leija, Mark Thurston

Human Development and School Services Faculty Publications

There is a variety of trauma resolution methods that focus on reducing the emotional impact of nightmares and/or waking traumatic memories. The revision of nightmares through imagery rescripting represents one of the effective evidence-based methods. In contrast, traditional dream analysis represents an unlikely intervention for trauma resolution, given cultural assumptions regarding the presumed fixed or predetermined nature of dreams. The co-creative dream paradigm, in contrast, introduces the notion that the dream ego can intervene to shift the dream’s unfoldment toward resolution, both retroactively by reliving the original dream in a new way, and prospectively by preparing for new responses in …

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Respirable dust in confined mine environments represents a significant environmental and occupational health challenge, requiring advanced monitoring and risk assessment methodologies. Current area-level monitoring overlooks the heterogeneity of personal exposure fields and the critical influence of human-ventilation interactions on local contaminant dispersion. This study develops an integrated monitoring-simulation method to quantify multi-worker dust exposure, assessing how worker position and orientation modulate risk under forced ventilation in narrow roadways. Occupational-specific dust sampling provided validation data for a three-dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics-Discrete Phase Model (CFD-DPM) incorporating human-ventilation interactions. The model integrates a MATLAB-developed breathing function to dynamically couple respiratory cycles with particle …

Sea-Ice Observation In The Arctic By The Arab Satellite 813, Simulated By The Radiative Transfer Model ‘Sciatran’, Tuqa Mohsin Al Hajri

Theses

The purpose of this research is to explore the spectral behavior of sea ice and to understand how Arctic sea ice surfaces appear when they are observed with a hyperspectral sensor. This is crucial because sea ice changes a lot during the melt season, and different surface types can sometimes look similar to a human eye, but physically they are different. It is thus essential to identify the spectral differences between these surfaces. The main objective of this study is to examine how the spectra of white ice and melt ponds change when their physical and optical properties are varied, …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Large Multi-modal Models (LMMs) have significantly advanced a variety of vision-language tasks. The scalability and availability of high-quality training data play a pivotal role in the success of LMMs. In the realm of food, while comprehensive food datasets such as Recipe1M offer an abundance of ingredient and recipe information, they often fall short of providing ample data for nutritional analysis. The Recipe1M+ dataset, despite offering a subset for nutritional evaluation, is limited in the scale and accuracy of nutrition information. To bridge this gap, we introduce Uni-Food, a unified food dataset that comprises over 100,000 images with various food labels, …

Not Too Early, Not All At Once: Design Tensions In Ai-Mediated Self-Disclosure In Online Dating, Pei-Hua Tsai, Tianyi Zhang, Emran Bin Elias Poh, Anthony Tang, Yung-Ju Chang Jun 2026

Not Too Early, Not All At Once: Design Tensions In Ai-Mediated Self-Disclosure In Online Dating, Pei-Hua Tsai, Tianyi Zhang, Emran Bin Elias Poh, Anthony Tang, Yung-Ju Chang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Online dating relies on self-disclosure, yet initial conversations are fragile: users must navigate uncertainty around timing, boundaries, and reciprocity with little shared context. While advances in AI raise the possibility of mediating disclosure, how such support might reshape the experience of early-stage relational disclosure remains underexplored. We conducted 29 semi-structured interviews to examine how daters envision AI-mediated self-disclosure in online dating. Our findings surface recurring design tensions rather than simple opportunities or risks. Participants welcomed guidance that could pace disclosure, support reflection, and reduce social awkwardness, but stressed preserving agency and authorship. They valued interpretive assistance for sense-making of ambiguous …

Hide-And-Sweep: Detecting Concealed Cameras Via Led Illumination Sweeps, Jonghyuk Yun, Jaeyoung Moon, Yunseo Park, Sean Rui Xiang Tan, Byunghyun Kim, Rajesh Krishna Balan, Jun Han

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Hidden cameras have increasingly infiltrated hotel and Airbnb rooms, posing serious privacy risks. Detecting such cameras is challenging because they are visually inconspicuous and often embedded inside everyday objects. Even worse, existing handheld detectors are manual and also rely on single-angle illumination and hence suffer from high false-positive rates. We present SweepLED (pronounced "sweepled")1, a practical hidden camera detection system that operates on a commodity smartphone augmented with an unobtrusive LED-embedded case. SweepLED performs LED sweeping - a controlled sequence of multi-angle illumination - while the user simply holds the phone still by hand, enabling the camera to capture how …

The Corporate Restructuring Machine: Introducing An Open Platform Approach To Workouts, Horst Eidenmüller, Jared Mayer Jun 2026

The Corporate Restructuring Machine: Introducing An Open Platform Approach To Workouts, Horst Eidenmüller, Jared Mayer

Articles

Out-of-court corporate reorganizations, or “corporate workouts,” allow dispersed investors with differing interests to coalesce and strike deals to successfully reorganize distressed companies. Corporate workouts, however, suffer from a host of well-known problems, creating “process fragility.” Current bargaining dynamics limit the instances in which corporate workouts can be used, narrow the kinds of deals that can be made, and invite opportunistic and other socially costly behavior. Yet the Artificial Intelligence (AI) revolution is here; how can it help parties navigate corporate workouts?

In this Article, we argue that AI is well situated to help increase the efficiency of corporate workouts. Based …

Heat Transfer And Micropolar Characteristic Analysis For Fluid Flow Over A Contracting Permeable Infinite-Length Cylinder: A Fractional Derivative Study, Khalid Al Homran Jun 2026

Heat Transfer And Micropolar Characteristic Analysis For Fluid Flow Over A Contracting Permeable Infinite-Length Cylinder: A Fractional Derivative Study, Khalid Al Homran

Theses

This study presents a comprehensive analysis of heat transfer and micropolar fluid characteristics for flow over a contracting permeable infinite-length cylinder using fractional derivative modeling. The micropolar fluid model accounts for microstructure effects that are prevalent in many practical applications, such as polymeric fluids, colloidal suspensions, and biological fluids. The inclusion of fractional derivatives allows the analysis to incorporate memory effects, which provide a more accurate depiction of the physical phenomena compared to classical integer-order models. The governing partial differential equations, representing the momentum, micropolar momentum and energy transport processes, are transformed into a set of nonlinear ordinary differential equations …

A Copula-Based Framework For Multivariate Count Time Series With Mixed Marginal Distributions, Dimuthu Fernando, Yuxin Wen, Wimarsha Jayanetti Jun 2026

A Copula-Based Framework For Multivariate Count Time Series With Mixed Marginal Distributions, Dimuthu Fernando, Yuxin Wen, Wimarsha Jayanetti

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

We developed a class of multivariate integer-valued time series models using copula theory. Each count time series is modeled as a Markov chain, with serial dependence characterized through copula-based transition probabilities for Poisson and negative binomial marginals. Cross-sectional dependence is modeled via a trivariate Gaussian or a “t-copula”, allowing for both positive and negative correlations and providing a flexible dependence structure. Model parameters are estimated using likelihood-based inference, where the trivariate Gaussian or t-copula integrals are evaluated through standard randomized Monte Carlo methods. Simulation results, along with an analysis of annual counts of major hurricanes (Category 3+) across the North …

Co●Lab: Co-Creating Student Formation For Social Justice Leadership, Iliana Molina Estrada Jun 2026

Co●Lab: Co-Creating Student Formation For Social Justice Leadership, Iliana Molina Estrada

Social Justice in Educational Leadership EdD Dissertations

Higher education institutions face a persistent challenge: efforts to promote social justice, while meaningful, often lack a shared language and intentional connections to student formation. Compounding this fragmentation, students and community partners are frequently absent from the decision-making processes that shape their own learning and development. This mixed-methods study, grounded in Design-Based Research (DBR), sought to collaboratively design a student formation model that connects fragmented efforts, positions students and community partners as co-creators, and strengthens students' capacity to contribute meaningfully to their communities.

Data were collected through questionnaires completed by 45 students and semi-structured interviews with 13 participants, including administrators, …

Riding Two Cities: A Data Visualization Capstone Comparing Nyc's Bmt Subway And Tokyo's Yamanote Line, Andreina R. Abreu

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Every weekday, millions of people trust two radically different urban rail systems to get them where they need to go. New York City’s Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit (BMT) group threads through the boroughs in a branching web of eight lines. Tokyo’s Yamanote Line runs as a single, closed loop around the capital’s core. Both systems move enormous volumes of people through dense, high-demand environments, but they do it in fundamentally different ways, and they share very different amounts of information about how they’re doing it. According to federal reporting, MTA New York City Transit served over 1.1 billion unlinked passenger trips in …

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Unearthing origins of modern mycophilia, this dissertation explores the mushroom mania which reverberated through American society at the turn of the twentieth century, empowering Anglo-American women in new ways. America’s largely forgotten first mushroom fad illuminates gendered negotiations of foraging culture and public science. Beginning in the 1880s, a remarkable cohort of women helped turn mushrooms from shunned, mysterious organisms into wholesome delicacies for culinary and intellectual enrichment. Female enthusiasts fostered a vibrant mushroom culture and nationwide network of mycophiles. Culinary applications and poisoning fears legitimized women’s presence in scientific endeavors, positioning mycology as vital female knowledge for public safety …

Five Urban Futures For A Hot Planet: U.S. Legal Scenarios, Michael B. Gerrard Jun 2026

Five Urban Futures For A Hot Planet: U.S. Legal Scenarios, Michael B. Gerrard

Faculty Scholarship

If current climate change trends continue, flooding, extreme heat, wildfires, and water scarcity will make the homes of millions of people in the United States increasingly uninhabitable. This change could happen by the end of the century, perhaps sooner. Most people will want to stay in their current homes, but there is no coherent policy to fortify the most vulnerable places. Nor is the current legal system equipped to handle what may become one of the largest migrations in U.S. history, as people flee intolerable climate conditions. This Article envisions five scenarios for cities in the future: sprout, grow, stay, …

Ldm-Morph: Latent Diffusion Model Guided Deformable Image Registration, Jiong Wu, Tinsu Pan, Kuang Gong Jun 2026

Ldm-Morph: Latent Diffusion Model Guided Deformable Image Registration, Jiong Wu, Tinsu Pan, Kuang Gong

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Deformable image registration plays an essential role in various medical image tasks. Existing deep learning-based deformable registration frameworks primarily utilize convolutional neural networks (CNNs) or Transformers to learn features to predict the deformations. However, the lack of semantic information in the learned features limits the registration performance. Furthermore, the similarity metric of the loss function is often evaluated only in the pixel space, which ignores the matching of high-level anatomical features and can lead to deformation folding. To address these issues, in this work, we proposed LDM-Morph, an unsupervised deformable registration algorithm for medical image registration. LDM-Morph integrated features extracted …
