Prescribed burning has had a short history of use as a management tool for grassland ecosystems. A paucity of information is available concerning the effects of burning grassland vegetation at different fuel moisture levels. There is ample documentation of the varied effects of burning on the grassland vegetation of humid regions this affected by season of occurrence, successional stage of the ecosystem, kind and density of vegetation, and phenological stage of the dominant vegetation. There is also abundant information on the effect of fire on forest ecosystems and on some grasslands ·invaded by woody plants, especially in the southwestern United …

Population And Productivity Of A Flock Of Giant Canada Geese In Northeastern South Dakota, Ted A. Clausing

Population and productivity studies of giant Canada geese (Branta canadensis maxima) were conducted in northeastern South Dakota in 1976 and 1977. One hundred ninety-three of 436 randomly selected sample quarter sections on the 5,459 km2 area contained potential goose nesting habitat in 1976. Forty-six pairs, 6 indicated pairs, and 6 single geese were found on these 193 quarter sections during the 1977 nesting season. The population was estimated to be 1,880 geese. Recommendations were to continue aerial surveys in the spring and late summer and to supplement them with annual searches of the sample quarter sections used in this study. …

Expansion of the range of the coyote (Canis latrans) has been accompanied by numerous instances of hybridization with domestic dogs (C. familiaris). Recent studies have found a hybrid element in some wild coyote populations. The objectives of this study were to identify the taxonomic status of coyotes in western South Dakota, and to determine the degree of hybridization, if any, that is occurring between coyotes and domestic dogs in the state. Animals were collected from three areas in western South Dakota from September 1976 through January 1978. Skulls of 289 wild canids were cleaned; of these, 167 skulls from adults …

Zinc concentrations in the root, terminal growth, stem, and needles of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) were measured in 72 seedlings grown in washed sand, fertilized with Zn(N03)2. Zinc treatment periods were early spring, late spring, and summer. Zinc uptake was the greatest in early spring. Zinc nitrate fertilizer and remaining soil zinc at treatments end had no effect on mycorrhizae, height, or diameter growth. Linear and multiple regressions were derived using residual soil zinc and treatment zinc that can predict zinc concentrations in different plant parts that have r values from .7440 to .8170. Colibacillosis (CB) in livestock is an economically important disease caused by the bacterium Escherichia coli. It is estimated that nearly one third of all baby pigs born in South Dakota die prior to weaning, and one fourth of these deaths is believed to be caused by CB (62). Similarly, it has been stated that 6 to 20% of calves born alive die from this disease (3). The term colibacillosis encompasses a group of diseases caused by E. coli in neonatal and weaned animals and humans (3). A mail survey was sent to owners of 220 ponds which had received hatchery fish. Based on 187 pond owner responses, at most 45 (24%) of the ponds still contained the fishes stocked. Pond dryness and/or winterkill attributed to the failure of 121 (65%) of the ponds. A subsequent field survey of 30 ponds identified fish populations of recreational value. Attempts were made to identify important pond parameters that contributed to successful fish populations. Studies were conducted to evaluate the nutritive value of three wheat cultivars produced at South Dakota State University. The three wheats were Kitt, Era and Rall. Crude protein analysis by the Kjeldahl method, amino acid content and a biological assay were conducted on all three wheat flours. Kjeldahl analysis yielded the following percentage proteins for Kitt, Era and Rall respectively; 18.1, 13.7, and 11.9. Lysine was the first limiting amino acid for rats in all three cultivars under investigation. Diets consisting of four protein levels of each wheat flour, four protein levels of casein control diet and one protein level …

Specific rabbit antisera against purified seedling RNase I from both a hardy (Dicktoo) and less-hardy (Tennessee Winter) cultivar of winter barley was obtained using a 1 mg injection schedule. Both antisera formed a single precipitin band on double immunodiffusion and immunoelectrophoresis when reacted with the homologous crude tissue extract. RNase antigen from either cultivar was highly cross-reactive with both antisera. Passive hemagglutination inhibition was used in an attempt to distinguish purified RNase from both cultivars. A consistent difference in anti-RNase serum specificity between cultivars was shown, but the difference observed by this method was not sufficient to conclude structural differences …

The intestinal bacterial flora of an animal has a considerable influence on the physiology of that animal. Some bacteria of the intestine are pathogenic and can initiate infections if they gain access to a susceptible individual. Some of the intestinal bacteria can produce potent carcinogens in vitro and can presumably do this also in vivo. Food passing through the alimentary tract of an animal is also chemically modified through the enzymatic action of the bacterial flora. The animal is also protected from some enteric infections through the antagonistic and competitive actions of the established organisms of the normal bacterial flora. …
