Many scientists believe that there are physiological barriers preventing increased soybean yields. Biological nitrogen fixation, a means of alleviating our increasing dependence on synthesized nitrogen fertilizers, is being studied with renewed interest. Production of nitrogen fertilizer requires large amounts of natural gas and other non-renewable energy sources, while the energy for biological nitrogen fixation is derived either directly or indirectly from photosynthesis. With only limited supplies of natural gas and an increasing population, and thus increasing demand for food, the advantages and even necessity of understanding and enhancing biological nitrogen is obvious. The purpose of this study was to determine the present status of intercollegiate varsity athletic letterwinners [sic] of Augustana College, Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Of equal importance to this study were the opinions and attitudes of these athletes toward their varsity athletic experience at Augustana College. All varsity letterwinners [sic] included in records obtained from the Alumni and Athletic office files, 1920 to 1977, were sent a questionnaire. Bovine abortion continues to cause economic loss to farmers and ranchers. In South Dakota, monetary loss from bovine abortion has been estimated at 4 to 4.8 million dollars annually. (31) Brucellosis was once considered the major cause of bovine abortion. This thesis represents the first half of a two year study of the vegetational composition of the Samuel H. Ordway, Jr. Memorial Prairie. Quadrat and point frame sampling was completed along 100 transects distributed over the 10 pastures. Biomass for the study area was determined to be 133. 3 g•m-2 for live weight and 104.0 g•m-2 for mulch. Basal cover for Ordway Prairie was found to be 12.5%. The study area was found to be predominantly occupied by warm season species. Andropogon scoparius was found to be highest in relative density while Carex was highest in relative frequency. …

Lake Cochrane was selected for this study because of its history of superior water transparency (Haertel 1972, 1976b). Significant amounts of silt and chemicals enter the lake with runoff at 3 locations (Haertel unpublished data). Restriction or impediment of runoff at these locations should result in improved water transparency (Haertel 1976b, Siegel 1975). Therefore, East Dakota Conservancy Sub-District and the South Dakota Department of Wildlife, Parks, and Forestry decided to impede runoff waters by means of 3 sediment-control dams incorporated into the perimeter road system of the lake and financed through a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency (Siegel 1975) …

Objectives of this thesis were to further characterize cell surface properties of preimplantation mouse embryos. A study was conducted to determine latent effects of varying pulses of CB on early postimplantation mouse embryos by comparing their abilities to hatch, to attach and to sustain growth and differentiation of ICM and trophoblast tissue. Effect of heat treatment on soybean and sunflower meal proteins were studied using in vitro and in vivo techniques. In experiment I, soybean meal (SBM) and sunflower meal (SFM) were subjected to steam heating about 120 C for 25 to 30 seconds using a commercial cooker extruder. The heat treatment was designed to reduce solubility of the SBM and SFM in the rumen, thereby allowing more soybean meal protein and sunflower meal protein to be undigestible in the rumen but still digestible in the lower digestive tract when fed to cattle. In October, 1972, Congress passed PL 92-500, "Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1972 1; which is designed to upgrade the quality of the nation's water. The act requires the formulation of effluent standards that would require use of “best practicable treatment”. The effluent standards are to require use of the "best available" technology by July 1, 1983 (1). PL 92-500 requires the Environmental Protection Agency Administrator to publish information explaining which treatment techniques may be used to meet the requirement of "best practicable treatment". The objective of the first part of this thesis is to test, in vitro, the adhesiveness of different stages of denuded preimplantation ICR mouse embryos for the substratum. In the second part, experiments are conducted to determine if there are differences in the attachment and spreading potential between tw32 homozygotes and normal embryos. For the past three years or so, a gradual migration of iron and manganese deposits has been observed in the water mains to the west of the East Water Treatment Plant of Brookings, South Dakota. These deposits have been gradually migrating further westward from the plant (8). Routine analyses of the treated water from the East Plant indicate that the iron and manganese levels are within the USPHS recommended limits (9). Consequently, conclusive evidence that this plant is the source of the problem does not exist. However, the analyses are normally conducted on samples collected shortly before backwashing the filters. …

A study of the breeding biology and prey selection of ferruginous hawks (Buteo regalis) was conducted in northwestern South Dakota during 1976 and 1977. Twenty four pairs were located in 1976 and 18 pairs attempted to nest; 17 pairs located in 1977 attempted to nest. The ecological density of breeding pairs was approximately one per 100 km2. Young fledged per nesting attempt averaged 1.89 in 1976 and 2.29 in 1977. All but one nest were located in unbroken, lightly grazed prairie and all were situated on hills, buttes, or river cutbanks. General nest orientation was toward the south and west. …

Cheese production and sales are a major part of the U.S. dairy industry. Total hard cheese sales have increased 60% in the past 10 yr. Per capita consumption of cheese for the same period has risen from 2.81 kilograms (kg) to 4.03 kg for a 43% increase. In response to greater consumer demand the amount of milk utilized in cheese production has increased markedly during the past quarter century rising from the low of 10% of annual milk production in 1950 to 24% in 1976. A nutrition survey was conducted in which the diets of 79 pregnant Sioux Indian women living on the Cheyenne River Reservation in South Dakota were evaluated. A 24-hour recall was used and background information was collected by the researcher at Public Health Service prenatal clinics. The dietary intakes were evaluated according to Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA). Diets were considered to be good if they provided all nutrients (protein, calcium, iron, vitamin A, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, and ascorbic acid) and energy at or above recommended levels, and poor if they provided one or more nutrients below two-thirds the RDA. As part of a continuing study of the biological community of Lake Cochrane, South Dakota, a quantitative survey of the macroscopic bottom fauna was made between the early part of April, 1976 and December, 1976. It was hoped that such a study could provide baseline data for an understanding of the interactions that occur between benthic organisms and other biological components of the lake system.
