Evaluation Of A Power Plant Reservoir As A Holding Area For Paddlefish Brood Stock, Terry L. Margenau

Twenty paddlefish (Polyodon spathula) released into the Big Stone Power Plant boiler make-up reservoir were monitored to determine growth, condition, and food habits. In addition, fish and zooplankton populations were sampled and chemical and physical parameters measured to determine the potential of the reservoir as a holding area for paddlefish brood stock. Paddlefish captured during the first year after their release into the boiler make-up reservoir averaged 2.2 kg body weight increases and 59 mm eye-fork length increases. Condition factors of captured paddlefish also increased during this period from 1.26 to 1.49. Paddlefish food in the reservoir consisted almost entirely …

Incest is a human behavior recorded in past and recent history. Behaviors labeled as incestuous vary greatly, ranging from sexual intercourse to intimate touching to display of sexual organs to verbal expression of sexual interest. For the purpose of this study, incest is defined as sexual activity among family members. More specifically, sexual activity is defined as either intercourse / or intimate touching or petting. Family members are either blood relatives or relatives through marriage or adoption (i.e. stepfathers or stepmothers). Throughout history, incest has typically been considered a taboo behavior. The problem of this study was to determine the prevalence and certain sources of stress among elementary school teachers (grades kindergarten through six), and the relationship of stress to certain selected teacher factors. This study followed the ex post facto design which attempted to determine if certain teacher factors affected the way in which teachers responded to the questionnaire regarding the prevalence and sources of stress perceived. A Sarcocystis species found in the wapiti (American elk) of South Dakota was macroscopically, microscopically, and ultrastructurally examined. Macroscopic and microscopic examination provided typical features of a sarcocyst, whereas ultrastructural examination revealed unique features in the primary cyst wall and a quadripartite arrangement of organelles in the merozoite. The sarcocysts observed were shiny white elongated ellipsoids embedded in what appeared to be an intramuscular vacuole. The primary cyst wall consisted of densely packed palisade-like protrusions (villi) and a wide underlying ground substance. Distinctive features of the palisade-like villi included peripherally supportive microfibrils which did not extend into the underlying ground …

It has long been established that lysine is the first limiting amino acid in cereal based diets for growing pigs. Some studies have shown that corn is first limiting in tryptophan for growing pigs while other studies indicate that lysine and tryptophan are equally limiting. Soybean meal is usually added to corn diets to supply the lysine required but in some countries where soybean meal is not easily available, fish and meat meals are the common protein supplements. In the developing countries, soybean meal, fish meal and meat meal are not only in short supply but also very expensive. Lysine …

Mechanical processing to alter physical and possibly chemical properties is one attempt to improve the value of a feedstuff. Processing methods such as grinding and rolling reduce particle size. These methods may result in an increase in rate of passage through the digestive tract but with more total efficiency in utilization of nutrients. This has been shown for roughages where grinding of hay resulted in improved daily gain and feed efficiency over those obtained with unprocessed hay. Reduction in particle size of concentrates has not shown the response in daily gain as that for roughages. Rather, the main advantage for …

Two experiments were conducted to study the effect of fermentation by-products and oats on production parameters and Fatty Liver Hemorrhagic Syndrome in caged laying hens. Hamlin Garland was an early twentieth century novelist whose parents homesteaded in Brown County, South Dakota in the late 1800's. To Garland this was the land of the Middle Border. The present study was designed to evaluate the effect of five different stocking combinations and differences in climatic and morphological conditions within South Dakota on initial growth and survival of the largemouth bass (Micropertus salmoides). Forage species stocked with bass included gold shiners (Notemigonus crysoleucas), fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas), black bullhead (Ictalurus melas), and bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus). Bass only stocking was also evaluated. First eyar survival values for 16 eastern South Dakota ponds ranged from 1 to 100%, with a mean of 50.2%. Sweet dry whey was used to replace 25% and 50% of nonfat dry milk solids in ice cream mix. Forty-five batches experimental and control lots of vanilla ice cream were manufactured. A commercial lactase was used to hydrolyze lactose to over 90% conversion and the lactase was inactivated after hydrolysis. The extent of lactose hydrolysis in the mix was adjusted to 50% or 75% by blending non-hydrolyzed nonfat dry milk and whey solids with hydrolyzed preparations. Extra sweetness of the conversion products permitted reduction of sucrose by 6.25% and 12.5%, respectively, in the 50% and 75% hydrolyzed lactose ice cream …

A search for alternate sources of fixed nitrogen for crop production has been caused by the rising cost of petroleum used in manufacturing nitrogen fertilizers. Nitrogen in its elemental form, N2, is quite stable, and all organisms except a few of the prokaryotic microorganisms can utilize nitrogen only in some chemically combined form. Those microorganisms which can utilize elemental nitrogen are a potential source of fixed nitrogen to crops. Rhizobium is a genus of nitrogen-fixing bacteria which form nodules on the roots of leguminous plants. This is a symbiotic relationship; the plants supply photosynthate to the bacteria which use that …

Chromosome and genetic instabilities were reported in many plant species (c.f. Partanen, 1963; Sunderland, 1973; Skirvin, 1978; D'Amato, 1976; 1978). D'Amato (1976) suggested that, in higher plants, only meristematic cells were genetically stable; explants excised from stem apices would then ensure genetic uniformity for in vitro plant propagation. However, cultures derived from shoot apices were generally inefficient for vegetative propagation. The usefulness of a tissue culture technique for cloning would then be judged not only by the degree of genetic variation in the tissue culture-derived population, but also by the amount of plantlets initiated from a culture. Initial Growth And Survival Of Bluegills And Black Bullheads Stocked With Largemouth Bass In South Dakota Ponds, James J. Shelley

Initial growth and survival rates were estimated for bluegills (Leponis macrochirus) and black bullheads (Ictalurus melas) stocked simultaneously with largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) in ponds throughout South Dakota. Mean first year survival for bluegills and black bullheads stocked in eastern South Dakota ponds was 28.6% and 67.7%, respectively. Differences in first year bluegill growth throughout the state were not detected. Total lengths for bluegills averaged 52.4 mm after one growing season statewide and 137.1 mm after two growing seasons in southeastern South Dakota ponds. Significant (P<.05) geographical differences in first year growth of black bullheads were detected with mean lengths ranging from 67.7 mm in northwest ponds to 115.5 mm in southeast ponds. The average total length for black bullheads after two growing season in southeastern South Dakota ponds was 215.2 mm. The combined effects of pH, turbidity, and bicarbonate alkalinity accounted for 67.5% of the variation in first year bluegill growth. The pond parameters total number of growing days, fish present prior to stocking, and pond surface area when combined accounted for 73.9% of the variation in first year black bullhead growth. Differences in bluegill relative weight values were not detected throughout South Dakota; the average for the state was 105.2. Mean black bullhead condition factors (K) for fish with total lengths between 128 and 191 mm were 1.85 and 1.45 for pre- and post-spawning periods, respectively. Bullheads probably spawned between 29 May and 26 June 1980.

Nitrogen is an essential ingredient of all proteins, and, as such, is required by all forms of life. An inadequate supply of nitrogen for agriculture is therefore a contributing factor to global food shortages. In order to meet world food demands, research to increase useable nitrogen supplies for agriculture is becoming an urgent priority. This project, which combines the techniques of serology and nitrogen fixation research, provides an important contribution to this goal. The immunological responsiveness of two groups of mice exposed to 2.5 mg/m3 aerosolized Pb(N03)2 either since birth or for 14 days prior to immunization were compared with mice receiving equivalent quantities Pb(N03)2 (125 ~g/mouse/day) by gastric intubation for 1~ days. Each group was immunized at 5 weeks of age with 108 sheep red blood cells to examine both primary and secondary antibody responses. Lead immunotoxicity was evaluated by comparing total and differential leukocyte counts, cellulose acetate electrophoretic serum profiles, phagocytic index, hemolytic complement activity, hemagglutination antibody titers and organ (lung, thymus, spleen, kidney and liver) to body weight ratios. The National Mastitis Council, Inc. defines mastitis as the infection of udder tissues (74). Mastitis is the most costly disease affecting dairy cows; many people do not realize the considerable losses due to mastitis (6). A reasonable estimate of the prevalence of mastitis is 50% of cows infected at any time (62); cows in the average herd contract clinical mastitis 1.5 times per year (74). The minimum antibiotic treatments per case of mastitis is two; with approximately 11 million dairy cows in the United States, the annual minimum number of antibiotic treatments is 33 million.
