Genetic Correlations Among Sex-Limited Traits, Michael D. Macneil

Monte Carlo simulation techniques were used to assess the merits of three methods for calculation of the genetic correlation when traits have been measured on half-sibs of each sex. The restricted maximum likelihood, path coefficient and covariance component estimators did not differ significantly in their accuracy. Path coefficient and covariance component methodologies gave nearly unbiased estimators for traits of high heritability. Across both levels of heritability, the restricted maximum likelihood methodology resulted in genetic correlations being estimated with significantly smaller sampling variance than the other methods. Composition, Biomass, And Protein Content Of A Lemna Trisulca L., Invertebrate Community In A Prairie Wetland, Linda J. Meyers

Samples of star duckweed (Lemna trisulca L.) were collected from a South Dakota prairie wetland during the summer 1981. Amphipods and gastropods were the dominant macroinvertebrates found within samples of duckweed in terms of biomass and density. Cladocera were the dominant microinvertebrates found in association with star duckweed. Significant variability was found in the biomass and densities of specific invertebrates with respect to sampling dates. Crude protein values of star duckweed-invertebrate community samples ranged from 7.6 to 18.5% and were found to correlate significantly with protein levels of the duckweed. Twenty dugout ponds in east-central South Dakota were stocked 10 May 1980 with fingerling (mean weight 39.4 g, mean total length 108.4 mm) channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) at stocking rates of 309, 618, 1,235, and 1,853 fish/ha. Supplemental food was provided in 16 ponds (four at each stocking rate) at a rate of 4% body weight every other day. Fish in four ponds stocked, one at each of the respective stocking rates were not fed. A flameless atomic absorption method of determining trace amounts of tellurium in acidic -media with sym-diphenylthiourea has been studied. Tellurium is extracted almost quantitatively from 4-8 M hydrochloric acid with a chloroform solution of sym-diphenylthiourea. The effects of interfering ions on the extraction efficiency have been studied. Conditions for the maximum extraction have been described. Optimal instrument parameters for the analysis of extracts have been determined. In most biological samples tellurium is found only in trace quantities. The necessity to determine traces of tellurium has raised difficult problems for analysts. The purpose of this investigation was to develop a technique …

The city of Huron, South Dakota, draws its drinking water supply primarily from the James River, a stream of extremely variable water quality which is difficult to treat. In this research, ozone was applied to the raw water through use of a pilot plant to determine what effects ozonation has on odor and flocculation. Following a preliminary study based on trihalomethane reduction, ozone dosages of 0, 4, 8, 12, 16 and 24 mg/1 were applied to the raw water at a 20-minute contact time. Growth, Food Habits, And The Relative Effectiveness Of Stocking Rainbow Trout (Salmo Gairdneri) In South-Central South Dakota, Kenneth C. Clodfelter

The effectiveness of stocking rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) in 47 selected stock ponds in south-central South Dakota was analyzed in 1977 and 1978. Rainbow trout were captured in 31 (66.0%) ponds during the study. Twenty-five of the 31 ponds (80.6%) appeared to have excellent rainbow trout populations. Rainbow trout stocked in ponds with a resident largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) population had poor survival. The growth rates and condition factors for 93 and 463 rainbow trout in 1977 and 1978, respectively, were excellent. The average total length for age-groups I and II rainbow trout in 1977 was 195 and 224 mm, …

This is a study of artistic imagination--literally, the process of image-making--the act of translating sensory information into visible symbols. Specifically, it is a study of three eighteenth century artists' detailed theories of imagination, and a comparison of the visual effects described by these theories. William Hogarth, Sir Joshua Reynolds, and William Blake ar~ three roughly contemporary artists who each describe a means of approaching nature, recording sensory facts and translating them into the images of art. I intend to pose three related questions to these artists and to seek answers in their respective treatises on aesthetic composition. Two of these …

Survival, Growth, Food Selection, And Alimentary Canal Development Of Intensively Reared Walleyes And Yellow Perch, Gregg Alan Raisanen

Five genera of invertebrates, collected from a municipal sewage lagoon, were fed to newly hatched larval walleyes, (Stizostedion vitreun vitreun), and yellow perch, (Perca flavescens), to document survival, growth, food selection, and alimentary canal development of these fishes. Mean survival of walleyes for the 18 day period after hatching was 14.1%: mean unaccountable mortality was 43.5%. Forty-three percent of the walleyes remaining after 18 days survived an additional 32 days; mean unaccountable mortality was 33.8%. Mean daily length gain over the 50 day period was 0.8 mm/day. Mastitis is the one major disease affecting dairy cows; considerable direct and indirect economic losses can be attributed to mastitis (6). Treatment of mastitis with antibiotic preparations will alleviate most disease symptoms. Problems may arise when cows treated with antibiotics have their milk used for commercial milk processes before antibiotics are clear. They are: 1) some people are allergic to penicillin, and 2) cultured dairy products may not grow because of inhibition. The Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act established that milk and milk products containing antibiotics are considered adulterated. Yogurt is a highly nutritious cultured dairy product which has been consumed for centuries, particularly in Eastern Europe. Although per capita consumption in the United. States is still far below that of most European countries; yogurt sales in the U.S.A. have increased phenomenally during the past three decades. Yogurt sales in the U.S.A. totaled 7.7 million kg in 1955; 31.8 million kg in 1966; and approximately 227 million kg by 1976 (41). Per capita sales increased 211% from 1970 to 1980 (45). Yogurt is one of the oldest and most traditional fermented dairy products. Since early times it has been an important food item of the people in the Middle East. Except for its refreshing taste and wholesomeness as a food, no special virtues were claimed for it until early in the 20th century when the bacteriologist, Elie Metchnikoff, who shared a Nobel Prize in 1908, concluded from his studies on the effect of lactic acid bacteria of the digestive tract, that yogurt arrests putrefaction in the intestinal tract and thus might be beneficial to health (55).
