Studies On Beneficial And Adverse Effects Of Dietary Buffers For Lambs, Jong Kyu Ha

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Experiments using lambs were conducted to study the effects of buffers or roughages against acidosis occurring during rapid dietary changes. Experiments using rats were conducted to investigate vitamin A and thiamin stability and/or utilization as influenced by bentonite. Incubating rumen fluid in vitro at a pH lower than 6 reduced volatile fatty acid (VFA) production and increased lactate accumulation. Limestone or bentonite at levels of 2% in 92% concentrate diets had little effect on feed intake or rumen and blood parameters during a 7-day treatment period using rumen-canulated sheep. However, 2% NaHCO3 increased rumen pH and feed intake on …

Feeding Value Of High Protein Oat Silage Versus Corn Silage For Dairy Cows, Tilahun Sahlu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Corn accounts for 80% of the total silage production in the United States while oats ranks second as a feed grain crop. Oats are a major crop in areas of the world where temperatures are cool and short growing seasons are not well suited for corn production. South Dakota is the leading oat producing state in the nation with 1. 68 million kilograms of oats produced annually. Oats play an important roll as animal feed because among common cereals in the United States it ranks highest in both protein and lysine content. Due to the wide genetic diversity of oat …

The Effect Of Prostaglandin F2-Alpha On Synchronizing Estrus In The Ewe, L Dean Churchill Jan 1980

The Effect Of Prostaglandin F2-Alpha On Synchronizing Estrus In The Ewe, L Dean Churchill

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Synchronization of estrus has been attempted by using hormone or hormone-like substances to bring females into estrus simultaneously. The objective of a synchronization program is to manipulate the reproductive process so that all females may be bred during a short pre-defined interval with normal fertility at this breeding. The concept of estrus control and synchronization is intriguing, offering the possibility of more uniform offspring, better use of facilities and labor, concentration of parturition and, in particular, the better utilization of outstanding sires through artificial insemination. The breeding season is the period during which ewes come into heat and will receive …

A Plant Growth Study Of 18 Flax (Linum Usitatissimum, L.) Genotypes, Mick Sikaenyi Mwala

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Flax is an important oilseed cop in the United States. Limitations on seed yield have been a major concern of researchers trying to develop high yielding flax cultivators. Dybing stated that comparative studies of physiological and biochemical factors could provide necessary insight into the cause of these limitations. Comstock concluded that there was sufficient genetic variability in the Flax World Collection to meet any breeding objective. Lay et al. considered the question of what physiological parameters could be measured to identify high yielding genotypes, and when in the life cycle of a plant those parameters could be influencing seed yield …

Nesting And Brood Rearing Ecology Of The Vancouver Canada Goose On Admiralty Island Southeast Of Alaska, Charles S. Lebeda Jan 1980

Nesting And Brood Rearing Ecology Of The Vancouver Canada Goose On Admiralty Island Southeast Of Alaska, Charles S. Lebeda

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Nesting and brood rearing biology of Vancouver Canada geese (Branta canadensis fulva) was studied in 1978 (preliminary) and from April-August 1979 in Seymour Canal, Admiralty Island, Alaska. Geese used trees for perching during the incubation period (24 April-7 June) and use was significant (P < .0001) for early morning hours. This behavior is considered unique among all Canada goose subspecies. An average of 86.3 search hours were conducted for each of 19 active nests located in 1979. Seven additional nests from previous years were also located. Twenty-two nests were located in forest habitat •. All forest nests were in association with vegetation similar to vegetation described for U.S. Forest Service classification of F4 and F5 (poorly drained) soil types. Mean clutch size was 4.4 ± 1.3 eggs. Mean egg length and width were 86.1 mm± 3.14 and 56.4 mm± 2.76, respectively. Success of all nests hatching at least one egg was 55.6%. Egg hatching success of successful nests was 95.7%. Total hatching success of all eggs was 62.0%. Forest habitat was used extensively for brood rearing. Broods generally avoided large bodies of water. Single family broods were found most often in forest habitat while creches were more common in meadows and intertidal zones. Breeding adults and goslings were comparatively less vocal in the forest. Goslings less than 2 weeks of age used forest habitat extensively and shifted to forest edge and intertidal zones with age. Forest habitats, rather than open water, were used as escape cover by breeding adults and broods. Nesting and brood rearing habitat was similar, thus, nest site selection may be closely tied to requirements for brood rearing habitat. Molting, non-breeding or unsuccessful breeding geese also used forest habitat freely and avoided observers by fleeing into the forest. Use of habitat compared to tide stage was significant (P < .0001) and may be a function of availability. Habitat use compared to daily time periods appeared to reflect feeding activity peaks in early morning and late afternoon. Adult geese primarily used the intertidal zone during pre-incubation; the grassy intertidal zone was used more during incubation and post-incubation. Skunk cabbage (Lysichiton americanum) comprised 23.8% aggregate of foods utilized and appeared to be the most important food during brood rearing. Goslings and molting geese also utilized sea lettuce (Ulva spp.) and blueberry (Yaccinium spp.) berries. Plant matter comprised the bulk of food items.

Isolation And Identification Of Obligately Anaerobic Bacteria From Bovine Lung Abscesses, Steven Lee Daniel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For many years, the role of anerobic bacteria in human disease was considered important only in such clostridial diseases as gas gangrene, botulism and tetanus. In the last 10 years, however, the development of new methods to isolate and identify anaerobic bacteria has established the pathogenic role of non-sporeforming anerobic bacteria in a wide variety of clinical infections in humans. Bacteroides fragilis is now known to account for approximately one fourth of all anerobic bacteria isolated from human clinical specimens. Recent advances in anaerobic bacteriology likewise have established that anaerobic bacteria are found as normal flora on the skin and …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As increasing numbers of women enter the labor force, it is becoming apparent women’s views concerning their future lifestyle are changing. The attempt to double-track is resulting in higher incidences of stress in women’s lives. Arnold Rose conducted a study of college females at the University of Minnesota. He discovered that females did not have clear expectations of future roles. He suggested that they had not been afforded the opportunity for relevant and adequate training that would prepare them for these roles. Several researchers have presented theories related to role enactment. The consensus appears to be that the expectations of …

The Effects Of Acute Ammonia Toxicity On Certain Blood Chemistries In Sheep, Gayleen Riedemann Jan 1980

The Effects Of Acute Ammonia Toxicity On Certain Blood Chemistries In Sheep, Gayleen Riedemann

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Protein has always been in short supply in the world. This will be even more evident when the world’s population reaches the projected 5.8 billion by the year 2000. Rosenfeld noted that not only will there be more mouths to feed, but there is also a decrease in cropland due to increased housing and industry. For these reasons, along with the monetary benefits, urea has been added to feeds for ruminants to prevent the waste of valuable protein. The Board on Agriculture and Renewable Resources cited several factors which may cause urea toxicity to develop: (1) lack of an adequate …
