The Effects Of A Circuit Weight Training Program On Body Composition, Muscular Endurance, And Muscular Strength In Untrained Females, Stephen M. Woodden

The effects of a circuit weight training (CWT) program on body composition, muscular endurance, and muscular strength in untrained females were examined. Seventeen untrained female subjects volunteered for either the experimental group (EG) (N=l3) or the control group (CG) (N=4). All subjects were pre and post tested for total body weight (TBW), body density (BD), percent body fat (%BF), lean body weight (LBW), muscular endurance (ME), and muscular strength (MS). The EG participated in a CWT program, lifting a minimum of 40% of a one repetition maximum for 30 seconds (12-15 repetitions) at each station, and resting 40 seconds between …

The widespread use of pesticides during the last two decades has played an important role in the development of today's agricultural system and is one of the major topics of modern science. It is also expected to assist in meeting the nutritional needs of the rapidly expanding populations in the world. Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L), due to its nutritive quality, is one of the most important grain legume crop of the temperate and subtropical regions. Average productivity world-wide is about 710 kg/ha. In central South Dakota, seed production was as high as 2500 kg/ha which is approximately twice the production rate obtained from areas where chickpea is commonly grown. To improve productivity of chickpea at the international level, the crop has been included in the research mandates of the International Crop Research Institutes for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICROSAT), Hyderabad, India; and International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA), …

Although well documented for other habitat types, small mammal habitat use patterns in prairie wetlands are poorly understood. The distribution of the mammal fauna of South Dakota is also not well known. Because of the lack of information in these areas, evaluation of the impacts of wetland modifications on the resident mammal community is not possible. The purpose of this study was to determine if participation in an experiential based instructional program for exploring vocations in emerging and new technologies would enable academically able high school juniors and seniors to attain increased maturity of attitudes and competency in career decision-making skills as measured by the Career Maturity Inventory. A total of 64 students participated in the study. Participants came from a pool of 132 junior and senior high school students identified as having a grade point average that placed them in the top thirty percent of their class. The purpose of the study was to (1) compare the performance on left and right hemisphere processing tasks of male and female kindergarten students from three instructional approaches, and (2) to determine the effectiveness of an educational application: the use of "hands-on" inquiry-oriented science activities designed to engage the right hemisphere in improving left and right hemisphere processing. Subjects included 79 students enrolled in intact kindergarten classes representative of three instructional approaches: (1) the Traditional-Conventional Instructional Approach, (2) the Montessori Approach, and (3) the Open Activity-Centered Instructional Approach. To examine the role of bird species (other than Anatidae) in the prairie wetlands ecosystem. Seven wetlands on Waterfowl Production Areas in eastern South Dakota were utilized to measure differences between bird communities in plots with dug brood complexes and non-modified plots. Thirty-eight species of wetland birds were recorded on wetlands during June 1981 and June 1982. The most abundant species included the red-winged blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus), marsh wren (Cistothorus palustris), and song sparrow (Melospiza melodia). Plant preference of yearling hybrids (Hypophthlmichthys nobilis X Ctenopharyngodon idella) was examined under control conditions at the Gavins Point National Fish Hatchery, Yankton, South Dakota and under field conditions in two stockwater impoundments in south-central South Dakota. IN feeding trials, conducted in a 0.07 ha hatchery pond, hybrid grass carp selected Najas guadalupensis, Chara sp. and Potamogeton pectinuatus. Ceratophyllum demersum and Myriophyllum spicatum were not consumed. Under field conditions N. guadalupensis also appeared to be preferred while C. demersum was not. Feeding behavior, daily consumption, growth, and survival were also evaluated in the two stockwater impoundments. Hybrids averaging 51g were …

Rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) reared in 1 m³ cages in a South Dakota dugout pond grew and survived as well or better than most cage-cultured rainbow trout reported in the literature. Significant differences (P≤0.01) in mean length, weight, and food conversion, and similarity in relative weight between trout fed 2 and 4% of body weight daily, indicated that the optimum feeding rate was near 3% for this size range (35=100g). Daily rations based on fish size and water temperature need to be developed for trout reared in a lentic environment. The high cost of fingerlings was the limiting factor in …

In vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) of sunflower hulls (SFH) treated with sodium hydroxide (NaOH), ammonium hydroxide (NH4OH), and potassium hydroxide (KOH) at increasing levels were studied. Tested concentrations of each alkali as percent dry matter (DM) on SFH were 1.63, 2.45, 3.26, and 4. 08. In vitro dry matter digestibility of sunflower hulls increased with higher concentrations of NaOH and KOH. Percent IVDMD for control (un-treated SFH) was 18.0. Percent IVDMD for SFH treated at 1.63, 2.45, 3.26, and 4.08% of DM were: 18.9, 21.4, 22.2, and 22.9 for NaOH; 18.3, 18.0, 18.3, and 18.5 for NH …

Root-knot nematodes, Meloidogyne spp. have long been a problem on vegetable crops in Botswana. Loss of yield and reduction in quality and marketability of vegetable crops such as beet (Beta vulgaris L.) and carrot (Dancus carota L.) have been reported from school and home gardens as well as from commercial gardens in the country (Nilsson, personal communication). Other major vegetable crops including tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) and spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) are also damaged, but the damage is often overlooked unless plants are pulled and roots examined. Much of the food production in the world today depends on the presence of an adequate supply of nitrogen in the soil. Whether farming methods are simple or intense, nitrogen in usually the primary limiting factor in this production. In order to relieve this limitation, much of the world's agriculture has turned to the commercial manufacture and application of nitrogen fertilizers to increase crop output and to bring new lands into production. Replication Of Bovine Parainfluenza-3 Virus In Bovine Alveolar Macrophages : Effects On Phagocytosis And Phagosome-Lysosome Fusion, Richard Allen Hesse

Bovine parainfluenza-3 virus was found to replicate in alveolar macrophages in vitro. Cytopathic changes include spindle cell and giant cell formation, cellular detachment, and diffuse cell lysis progressing to total destruction of the monolayer. Direct immunofluorescent microscopy demonstrated viral antigens in greater than 90% of the cells three days after virus inoculation. Virus titers in culture supernatants increased by 6 a factor of 1.6 X 10 TCID50 by six days post inoculation. Phagocytosis assays showed no statistical differences of glass adherent cells in virus infected and control macrophages. When the number of glass adherent cells available for assay are taken …

The wild lagomorpha of North America have in the past been the subject of numerous parasitological examinations. Many of these surveys have been performed on cottontail rabbits, while comparatively fewer studies have been done on the jack rabbits. In South Dakota, parasite surveys have yet to be. completed on both cottontail rabbits and jack rabbits. The possibility for biological inhibition of blue green algae by allelopathy was investigated in seven replicated laboratory and three replicated lake experiments. Controls containing natural lake water were compared with treatments containing the potentially allelopathic plants Najas guadalupensis, an aquatic monocot, Hydrodictyon reticulatum, a green alga, and a combination of the two plants. Significant changes in chlorophyll a were tested for in all experiments; algal cell count changes were tested for in four experiments. 250-ml glass flasks were used in laboratory experiments, and partially submerged 5-gallon semitransparent polyethylene containers were used in lake experiments. If a landfill is improperly managed or improperly located, contamination of the ground water is possible. Once contaminated, the polluted ground water can travel for great distances with little dispersal or interaction with the soil. Once the ground water is polluted it is very costly, if even possible, to alleviate the problem. Over fifty percent of the people in the United States use ground water as a source for drinking water.
