Possible Relationships Between Surface Water Chemistry And Aquatic Plants In The Northern Great Plains, Kristin K. Sletten

The possibility of establishing relationships between surface water chemistry and the occurrence of certain aquatic plant species was investigated on 281 wetland sites throughout the northern Great Plains. Ninety-seven species of aquatic plants were selected for the study, selection being based on the direct association of plants with water and on the number of sites at which the plants were found. The ranges and means of surface water conductivity, total alkalinity and pH values were determined on a species by species basis. Of the three chemical parameters measured, conductivity of surface water appeared to have the greatest influence on the …

Factors Affecting Water Quality And Microinvertebrate Distribution Within A Small Black Hills Stream, Henry G. Drewes

A comparative evaluation of the benthic macroinvertebrate fauna was conducted concurrently with a physiochemical investigation on Slate Creek, Pennington County, South Dakota in the Black Hills. Water quality differences between years and among stations were detected in Slate Creek from both physiochemical and macroinvertebrate evaluations. The primary sources of disturbance to the Slate Creek study site during the sampling period were landscaping activities within the Deerfield Park Resort development and livestock activity. Increased runoff and elevated stream flows in 1982 were responsible for the variation in water quality between years. Water quality differences among stations indicated significantly (P < 0.05) higher turbidity and temperature immediately below the development site in 1981 and 1982. Significantly (P < 0.05) higher fecal coliform bacteria counts were observed at station 5 for both years, resulting from increased livestock activity. Phosphates and nitrates were highest at stations 4 and 5 but were not significantly (P > 0.05) different …

Rainbow Trout Cage Culture And Benthic Production In East-Central South Dakota Dugouts, Glenn David Schuler

Forty-five cages, encompassing 1.0 m3 of water, distributed between three dugout ponds, were stocked with rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) fingerlings to determine the feasibility of raising annual fish crops. Growth rates were compared between feeding rate (0, 3, and 5% body weight/day [bwt/day]) and stocking rate (35, 52, and 70 fish/cage). Growth was significantly (P ≤0.05) greater at feeding rates of 3 and 5% bwt/day than 0% bwt/day. The fish fed 0% bwt/day decreased in mean weight by 0.7 g; the weight gain for the 3 and 5% bwt/day feeding rates were 47.2 and 45.2g, respectively. Significant differences (P ≤ …

The genus Echinacea, family Asteraceae, contains several species of herbaceous, warm season perennials possessing varying amounts of biologically active materials. Echinacea is indigenous to the central or west-central U.S. and ranges from Texas and Alabama to Saskatchewan in Canada. McGregor recognizes 9 species and 2 varieties of Echinacea; the taxa of western distribution occurring in dry areas of prairie and grassland ecotype, those of more eastern distribution in dry, rocky, open woodlands, hillsides, or glades. Cellulosic wastes are the most abundant organic material on earth. Utilization of cellulose occurs through microorganisms by a process of hydrolysis to low molecular weight hexoses and pentoses. These are regarded as substrates for microbial production of food (single cell protein), ethanol (fuel alcohol) butanol and other fermentation chemicals. Agricultural producers incur the largest volumes of these cellulosic wastes, therefore it is of economical importance that they be utilized. The serological characterization of Listeria monocytogenes apparently began with the work by Seastone, who determined that a close serological relationship existed between cultures collected from humans and animals. Schultz et al. and Julianelle et al. later suggested that two serological types existed that could be connected to the origin of the strain. These initial studies were expanded by the work of Paterson, who studied the antigenic structure of Listeria monocytogenes using agglutination and adsorption techniques. The nursing profession has a high attrition rate with respect to its work force. A 1977 study conducted by the United States Department of Labor estimated that twenty-seven percent of the total nurse population was neither employed nor looking for work. Holding this percentage constant for the 1980 statistics, there are approximately 400,000 additional registered nurses who are not working today. White asserts that "burnout" is the primary factor responsible for the attrition rate among professional nurses. Crop yield increases needed to meet world population growth result in a greater demand for nitrogen. This research is a study of a morphogenetic shift of the soybean shoot apex from quiescence to germination. The minute changes in the organelles were recorded with the use of stereological methods. The ultrastructural data was statistically analyzed. The ultimate goal was the recognition of relationships between the cell's functional units and its structural units, with the identification of morphogenetic regulation mechanisms. Morphometric image analysis of cellular organelles indicated that storage reserves were transformed from lipid bodies to plastid starch. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between a baccalaureate nursing student's academic performance and scores received on the National Licensing Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN); and to develop an equation to predict NCLEX-RN scores.
The sample consisted of 25 generic students who graduated in 1982 and 1983 from a small private baccalaureate liberal arts college located in the Midwest. An Ex Post Facto research design, using twenty independent variables that relate to academic performance (ACT, CPA, and NLN scores), and one dependent variable (NCLEX-RN), was utilized. Gliocladium virens Miller et at. applied as a seed treatment controlled alfalfa (Medicago sativa L. ‘Travois’) damping-off in natural soils artificially infested with high levels of Pythium ultimum Trow, but Trichoderma hamatum (Bon.) Bain and Trichoderma harzianum Ragai were not effective at relatively high soil pH levels. Biocontrol with G. virens was nearly as effective as metalaxyl seed treatment, and better than Captain in most environments. A total of 3780 male and 216 female large white Nicholas turkeys were used in four experiments to determine the effect of different feed additives on turkey performance. In the first experiment, the effect of 60, 120 or 240 ppm Cu on the growth of male turkeys was examined as affected by 75, 100 or 125% of the suggested NRC (1977) levels of sulfur amino acids (S-AA). Two studies were conducted to evaluate the effect on the productive value of a diet for broilers containing high levels of wheat bran with a supplement of cellulose from Trichoderma viride. In both studies, broiler-type, mixed sex chicks were divided into replicate groups of 10 birds each and fed for 5 weeks. The wheat bran was defatted and added at 0, 10 and 20% levels. A fourth group received the 20% wheat bran plus a cellulose enzyme added at the level of 0.008%. Feeding experiments, digestion-nitrogen balance trials, rumen fermentation studies and blood parameter determinations were conducted to evaluate protein utilization by cattle and sheep as affected by feed source represented by ingredients varying in solubility or degradability or protein and amino acid profile, processing treatment and level of supplementation. Growing and finishing cattle shower improved performance when fed ground ear corn or corn silage as basal diets supplemented with various sources of protein. Brood-rearing period cover use by wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) hens with broods and those without, in Gregory County, South Dakota, was determined in order to formulate management suggestions for grassland/riparian woodland habitat. Two hens with broods and 12 hens without broods were studies through telemetry and direct observations form 5 July through 2 August and 3 August through 17 August of 1982 and 1982. Vegetational data were collected in 1983. Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is a non-competitive inhibitor in vitro of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH), the rate controlling enzyme in the pentose-phosphate shunt. This pathway produces NADPH, a necessary co-factor for the synthesis of fatty acids and ribo- and deoxyribonucleotides. Some researchers believe that by decreasing G6PDH activity, DHEA produces an anti-obesity and anticarcinogenic effect in laboratory mice and rats genetically inclined toward obesity and cancer. It is DHEA's anti-obesity effect which lends it to the study of the yellow obese (AY/-) mouse with its peculiar pleiotropic syndrome. Four genera of zooplankton and cladoceran egg cases, collected from a municipal sewage lagoon, were made available as food to green sunfish (Lepomis cyanellus) and bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus) fry, to examine their food selectivity. Green sunfish and bluegill fry ranged in size from 8.5-11.0 mm and 8.0-10.5 mm at stocking and were reared for 31 and 30 days, respectively. The gut contents of 1488 green sunfish and 1440 bluegill fry, representing day and night samples were examined. Diet composition was evaluated using the linear food selection index. The objectives of this investigation were to determine the immunotoxic effects of toxaphene exposure in mice after either ingestion or cutaneous absorption. Immunological competence was determined by studying various parameters of nonspecific, humoral, and cell-mediated immunity. These included 1) total and differential white blood cell counts, 2) organ to body weight ratios, 3) hemagglutination antibody titers, 4) the number of antigen-specific antibody-forming cells, and 5) both mitogen- and antigen-induced lymphocyte proliferation assays. This study was conducted in 1979 and 1980 to determine abundance, productivity, food habits, and ranges of raptors utilizing shelterbelts were in a 78 km² Brookings County study area. The shelterbelts were heterogeneous stands of trees and shrubsplanted in linear rows. Major tree species included elm (Ulmus spp.), green ash (Fraxinus pennsylvanica), cottonwood (Populus deltoids), Russian olive (Elaeagnus angustifolia), and eastern red cedar (Juniperus scopulorum). Digestibilities of rations containing 10% (dry matter basis) oil-type, rolled sunflower seeds treated with three levels- of calcium hydroxide were compared using .a randomized complete block design. Forty-eight Holstein steers were fed one of six completely mixed rations consisting of (DM basis) 44% corn silage, 10% chopped alfalfa hay, and 46% concentrate mix. Concentrate mixes contained: CSM = control; SCS =control+ 22% sunflower seeds; SCL = SCS + 3.5% additional limestone; SCH2, SCH4, and SCH8 = SCS + 2, 4, and 8% calcium hydroxide (% sunflower seed DM), respectively.
