Extruded Blend Of Soybean Meal And Sunflower Seeds For Dairy Cattle In Early Lactation, James K. Drackley

An extruded blend of 44% crude protein soybean meal (50%), sunflower seeds (45%), and premix (5%) was evaluated as a protein and energy source for dairy cows in early lactation. Thirty Holstein cows (24 multiparos and 6 primiparous) were assigned to either a corn-oats-soybean meal concentrate (SBM) or a concentrate where soy-sunflower blend replaced all soybean meal and portions of corn and oats (SSF). Dry matter of total mixed diets was 36% corn silage, 21% alfalfa haylage, and 43% concentrate. Yields of milk (33.6 and 33.8 kg/day) and 4% fat-corrected milk (30.9 and 30.5 kg/day) were similar for cows fed …

The effectiveness of a rumen-protected methionine preparation was studied as an amino acid source for high-producing dairy cows during wk 4 through 16 postpartum. Twenty-four Holstein cows (14 primiparous and 10 multiparous) were fed concentrate containing heat-treated· soybean meal without or with 50 g/cow/day of added ruminally protected methionine product which provided 15 g of added DL-methionine daily. Cows were fed 16% crude protein mixed diets containing 30% of dry matter as corn silage, 15% as alfalfa hay, and 55% as concentrate. Milk production and composition were adjusted for pretreatment values (3 wk postpartum) by analysis of covariance. Adjusted milk …

Sodium monofluoroacetate (Compound 1080) is a highly toxic rodenticide which has ·been used in control of prairie dogs (Cynomys spp.). The toxic effects of Compound 1080 to non-target species caused Compound 10SO to be banned as a rodenticide. This study was initiated to develop a low-level bait which could be effective in prairie dog control and would have a higher margin of safety to non-target species. Compound 1080 was administered to 83 black-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus). Systemic cell mediated, systemic antibody, and local antibody responses were evaluated in cattle inoculated with bovine herpesvirus type 4 (BHV-4). Experiment 1 was designed to evaluate an in vitro lymphocyte transformation assay to quantitate the response of peripheral blood leukocytes (PBL) from cattle to BHV-4 infected target cells. Three types of target cells, bovine embryonic lung, bovine skin fibroblast-13, and Vero, were inoculated with BHV-4 at different multiplicities of infection and fixed in glutaraldehyde to retain BHV-4 surface antigens. This study investigated age- and sex-specific death rates in South Dakota Counties among the population 65 and over in 1960, 1970 and 1980. Census Bureau and Vital Statistic data were employed to answer the basic question of how death rates and quality of life factors were related. Quality of life factors included; economics, urbanization, health technology, and education, which were operationalized at the county level. A description of county quality of life factors and age- and sex-specific death rates for males and females was presented. Using Richard Emerson's exchange network analysis, exchange relations in the South Dakota 4-H program were examined. South Dakota 4-H is comprised of both paid staff and volunteer leaders. It is currently undergoing structural change through the implementation of the Key Leader System. The Key Leader System involves appointing county level Key Leaders and club level Project Leaders to disseminate information to 4-H members and to assist them with their projects. Survey data, interviews, and State Fair results were collected to test hypotheses generated by exchange network analysis. Both clubs and counties varied in the degree to which they had implemented …

Two experiments were conducted over a period of two years to evaluate the comparative nutritive value of soybean meal, sunflower meal, and meat and bone meal. Experiment 1 consisted of 864 Babcock--3OO pullets randomly distributed into twelve diet treatments. Each treatment was replicated six-times with twelve birds per unit. Layers diets were formulated at 16, 14, and 12% protein levels with and without amino acid supplementation. The 12% amino acid supplemented level served as the control in the experiment. Soybean meal, sum-lower meal, and eat_ and bone meal were utilized as major sources of protein supplement in yellow-corn based diets. …

Response of plants to water stress are numerous and interrelated. Morphological traits and growth patterns have been studied and reviewed extensively. Root growth patterns, leaf area and thickness, presence of cuticle hair and waxes, leaf movement, and wilting are only a few traits studied. Metabolic functions and how water stress affects these processes through stomatal behavior, transpiration rates and carbon dioxide exchange rates have also been reviewed. Plant breeders are continually searching for traits which aid in selecting for high yielding genotypes in any one environment. In 1983 zinc phosphide, strychnine with prebait, and strychnine without prebait were applied to black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) colonies in west-central South Dakota. Short-term (4 days later) and long-term (1 year later) poison efficiency and impact (short-term and long-term) on horned larks (Eromophila alpestrus) and other seed-eating birds of the prairie dog colonies were evaluated. Prairie dog burrow densities ranged from 54-187 burrows/ha with an average burrow density of 114 ±8 (± SE) burrows/ha. Rodenticide short-term control reduced active burrows by 95% with zinc phosphide, 42% with only strychnine, and 78% with prebaited strychnine. More zinc phosphide was consumed …

The demands for genetic improvement of plants are rising and the methods to propagate superior plants are improving through tissue culture. Lilium species are commercially propagated by scaling. The base of each bulbscale initiates a few bulblets. Recently, slices of bulbscales were successfully cultured in vitro and numerous bulblets were directly initiated from the explants, producing an abundance of plantlets. This practice of in vitro vegetative propagation of Lilium species not only increases efficiency of multiplying plantlets but also facilitates induction of polyploidy. It is expected that through conventional water treatment an abundance of drinking water will be produced free from pathogenic organisms, free from scale-forming substances, free from toxic chemicals, free from corrosion and corrosion products and free from aesthetically offensive substances. The distribution, temperature selection, and gonadal development of fishes in the Big Stone Power Plant cooling reservoir were examined from July 1982 through July 1983. A total of 46.8% of the fishes captured during this study were from the discharge area, while 31.8% and 21.4% of the fish occurred in the mixing and intake areas, respectively. The mean water temperature occupied by common carp (Cyprinus carpio) ranged from 7.5 C in February to 31.2 C in August. Large quantities of whey are produced as a by-product from the manufacture of cheese or casein. The United States has an annual cheese production of about 2.2 billion kg. The cheese industry has also experienced a steady increase in cheese production of about 6% a year (44). In the process, nearly 18.1 billion kg of whey are produced. Mold contamination of processed food and its raw ingredients is a major concern in agriculture. Although at one time mold contamination of cheese and other foods was considered to be of little conse9uence, discovery of carcinogenic and/or teratogenic toxins (73) produced by molds commonly associated with food has changed this innocuous and frequent inconvenience into a serious health consideration. The KpnI, 1.2 and 1.5 kb families of interspersed repetitive DNAs from the African green monkey genome were isolated and characterized. Each family contains three populations of segments based on their sequence lengths and susceptibility to cleavage by the restriction enzymes KpnI and RsaI. The first population contains the smallest segments which are susceptible to both KpnI and RsaI cleavage and have fragment lengths of 1.2 kb (1.2 kb family) and 1.5 kb (1.5 kb family) respectively. The members in this population are referred to as KpnI-sensitive segments. The second population contains longer segments (> 2 kb) which represent fusions …

This thesis concerns the biology of Diabrotica cristata a small relatively inconspicuous beetle inhabiting relict prairie and grass lands in the Great Plains Region of North America. Diabrotica cristata has been classified taxonomically in the virgifera group and is, therefore, closely related to several very important pest species including Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte, the western corn rootworm (WCR), Diabrotica virgifera Krysan and Smith, the Mexican corn rootworm (MCR) and Diabrotica barberi Smith and Lawrence, the northern corn rootworm (NCR). The genus Diabrotica (Chrysomelidae) is composed of three groups: fucata, virgifera and signifera. The virgifera group not only includes the above …

A new synthetic route to produce a phosphonyl radical in the ground state has been devised. The radical is capable of maintaining its structural integrity and geometry. In polar aprotic solvents the radical can equilibrate depending upon reaction conditions. Our results are significant for they show that the homolytic cleavage of a phosphorous oxygen bond could by changing the configuration at phosphorous, influence the biological properties of naturally occurring compounds. The stereochemistry of 2-substituted-5-ch1oromethyl-5methy1-2-oxo-1,3,2-dioxaphosphorinans can be established by proton NMR spectroscopy. Methanolysis of 2-hydrazinophosphorinans has been investigated. Cis and trans 2-hydrazinophosphorinans undergo acid catalyzed methanolysis to give products of both …
