Fire Type Classification In The Brazilian Tropical Moist Forest Biome, Sanath Kumar Sathyachandran
Fire Type Classification In The Brazilian Tropical Moist Forest Biome, Sanath Kumar Sathyachandran
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Brazilian Tropical Moist Forest Biome (BTMFB) is “Earth’s greatest biological treasure and a major component of the earth system” and forest degradation and deforestation by fire is a serious issue in this region. Fires in the BTMFB can be broadly classified as maintenance, deforestation and forest fire types. Spatially and temporally explicit information on the incidences of fire types are important as they have widely varying atmospheric emissions and ecological impacts. Satellite based remote sensing is a practical means of monitoring the BTMFB that spans almost 4 million km2. However, there has been no way to reliably …
Ruminal Degradabilities And Intestinal Digestibilities Of Canola Meals And The Production Response Of Cows Fed Canola Meal With Varying Concentration Of Starch Sources, Nadeesha Kumari Jayasinghe
Ruminal Degradabilities And Intestinal Digestibilities Of Canola Meals And The Production Response Of Cows Fed Canola Meal With Varying Concentration Of Starch Sources, Nadeesha Kumari Jayasinghe
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Canola meal (CM) is a by-product in the manufacturing process of canola oil which can be performed with or without using solvent extraction. It is a protein supplement which has grown its importance in dairy cattle feeding competing with soybean meal (SBM). However, final quality of the feed depends on the oil extraction process and the production conditions used by the individual processing plant. Two studies were conducted to investigate: 1) the variability among the CM produced in different processing plants and 2) the best starch source or the most suitable proportion of corn and barley to be fed with …
Availability And Preservation Of Scholarly Digital Resources, Jason Hennessey
Availability And Preservation Of Scholarly Digital Resources, Jason Hennessey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The dynamic, decentralized world-wide-web has become an essential part of scientific research and communication, representing a relatively new medium for the conveyance of scientific thought and discovery. Researchers create thousands of web sites every year to share software, data and services. Unlike books and journals, however, the preservation systems are not yet mature. This carries implications that go to the core of science: the ability to examine another's sources to understand and reproduce their work. These valuable resources have been documented as disappearing over time in several subject areas. This dissertation examines the problem by performing a crossdisciplinary investigation, testing …
Toward A Conceptualization Of Emetophobia: Examining Intolerance Of Uncertainty As A Unique Predictor Of Symptoms, Mimi Zhao
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Emetophobia, a poorly understood disorder, is a specific phobia characterized by an irrational and persistent fear of oneself vomiting or others vomiting. Though research on the disorder is sparse, previous investigations have reported interference in social, occupational, and health domains in the lives of individuals with emetophobia (Lipsitz et al., 2001; McFayden & Wyness, 1983; Veale & Lambrou, 2006). To this end, the current study examined whether individual differences in Anxiety Sensitivity (AS), Disgust Sensitivity (DS), and Intolerance of Uncertainty (IU) are associated with symptoms of emetophobia, whether AS predicts symptoms of emetophobia above and beyond DS, IU, and expected …
The Social Ecology Of Men's Sexual Self-Efficacy In The Mississippi Delta, Vanessa Ann Parks
The Social Ecology Of Men's Sexual Self-Efficacy In The Mississippi Delta, Vanessa Ann Parks
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Mississippi often has some of the highest rates of teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases and infections in the country. To combat this, the state uses abstinence-based sexual education in an attempt to discourage young people from having sex. I conducted 27 interviews and one focus group to talk with young men in the Mississippi Delta about their opinions on birth control. Using the social ecological model and self-efficacy framework, this thesis considers the influences on young men that shape their attitudes and behaviors regarding sexual health topics such as birth control. Primary findings include their learning from teachers, parents, …
Why Aren't More Heathens Eco-Pagan Vegetarians? The Intersection Of Gender, Politics, And Spiritual Environmentalism, Kristen An Horton
Why Aren't More Heathens Eco-Pagan Vegetarians? The Intersection Of Gender, Politics, And Spiritual Environmentalism, Kristen An Horton
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Neo-Paganism, a nature-based new religious movement, provides a rich backdrop for the study of spiritual environmentalism. This ethnographic project analyzes the dynamic interconnectedness of neo-paganism and environmentalism, or "eco-paganism," and how Heathenry reframes the natural world using interpretations of Old Norse lore. A Heathen's connection to nature and how this connection is incorporated into his/her daily life supports the idea of environmentalism, yet their patriarchal and conservative political beliefs devalue environmentalism. My focus is on the feminization of the environment and vegetarianism to such a degree that Heathens view these movements as radicalized liberal tree hugging hobbies and how these …

Determinants Of Bite Force In Four Species Of Sharks From The Gulf Of Mexico With An Emphasis On The Atlantic Sharpnose Shark, Rhizoprionodon Terraenovae, Kyle Walter Rice
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Bite force can provide valuable information regarding the physiological ecology of an organism. However, there have been few studies wherein bite force in sharks has been considered. Herein I report on a study of the bite force of four species of sharks with particular emphasis on that of the atlantic sharpnose shark, rhizoprionodon terraenovae. Among the four species examined, blacktip shark, carcharhinus limbatus bite force was significantly higher than that of sharpnose, rhizoprionodon terraenovae. There was no significant difference between the bite force of those species compared with the same for finetooth shark, c. Isodon and spinner shark, c. Brevipinna. …
A Pairwise Feature Selection Method For Gene Data Using Information Gain, Tian Gui
A Pairwise Feature Selection Method For Gene Data Using Information Gain, Tian Gui
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The current technical practice for doing classification has limitations when using gene expression microarray data. For example, the robustness of top scoring pairs does not extend to some datasets involving small data size and the gene set with best discrimination power may not be involve a combination of genes. Hence, it is necessary to construct a discriminative and stable classifier that generates highly informative gene sets. As we know, not all the features will be active in a biological process. So a good feature selector should be robust with respect to noise and outliers; the challenge is to select the …
A Contextual Examination Of Mississippi's Principal Preparation Programs And Their Impact On Student Achievement, Wilner Bolden
A Contextual Examination Of Mississippi's Principal Preparation Programs And Their Impact On Student Achievement, Wilner Bolden
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Principal preparation programs have faced increased scrutiny concerning their effectiveness in preparing K-12 administrators (Bennet, Gooden, Lindauer, & Petrie, 2001). Due to consistently stagnant academic performance of schools across the nation and reported shortages of quality school leaders, principals have been pushed front and center as the targeted school leader responsible for school failure. Because principals received their preparation from either a traditional or alternate route principal program, there is a need to re-exam the effectiveness of these programs to enhance principal practice and principal performance. The purpose of this quantitative study, a contextual examination of Mississippi's principal preparation programs …
From The Mouths Of Mississippian: Determining Biological Affinity Between The Oliver Site (22-Co-503) And The Hollywood Site (22-Tu-500), Hanna Stewart
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Mississippian period in the American Southeast was a period of immense interaction between polities as a result of vast trade networks, regional mating networks which included spousal exchange, chiefdom collapse, and endemic warfare. This constant interaction is reflected not only in the cultural materials but also in the genetic composition of the inhabitants of this area. Despite constant interaction, cultural restrictions prevented polities from intermixing and coalescent groups under the same polity formed subgroups grounded in their own identity as a result unique histories (Harle 2010; Milner 2006). As a result, phenetic similarities and differences are not homogenized. In …
Growth Of Bald Cypress Boles And Knees As Influenced By Precipitation And Inundation At Sardis Lake, Mississippi, Emily M. Stauss
Growth Of Bald Cypress Boles And Knees As Influenced By Precipitation And Inundation At Sardis Lake, Mississippi, Emily M. Stauss
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The growth of bald cypress (Taxodium distichum) boles and knees in response to inundation and precipitation over small (< 4 m) elevation gradients was examined by measuring interannual growth increments of boles and knees at five sites at Sardis Lake, Mississippi. There was a significant (p=0.019) growth response to precipitation during November to April (the wet season), but there was not a significant growth response to inundation during the growing season (May to October). Because lake level at Sardis is controlled by the Army Corps of Engineers for flood control, the Sardis Lake shoreline area may be a habitat where growth response to precipitation and inundation differs from systems where precipitation and inundation are linked. The growth of knees from bald cypress roots was compared to growth of the boles in order to determine if knees and boles respond to the same environmental factors. It was found that the knees have high positive correlation coefficients when compared to the tree's bole if we assume that knee growth is initiated in response to a major flood event. If we assume knees grow in response to stress that limits bole growth, we would expect but do not find any discernable relationship between the initiation of knee growth and the timing of flood events.
Pretreatment Of Cellulosic Biomass By Iron-Containing Magnetic Ionic Liquid Dissolution, Christopher Roth Riley
Pretreatment Of Cellulosic Biomass By Iron-Containing Magnetic Ionic Liquid Dissolution, Christopher Roth Riley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The focus of this project is to determine the effectiveness in the preprocessing of biomass when magnetic ionic liquids (MIL) (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrachloroferrate (Bmim[FeCl4]) and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrachloroferrate (Emim[FeCl4])) are used as a green solvent. Lignocellulose is a promising starting material for a plethora of products, ranging from biofuels to custom chemicals; however, lignocellulose is resistant to enzymatic degradation. Various biomass-preprocessing techniques such as microbial, mechanical, and chemical pretreatment are used for enhancing the digestibility of biomass to sugars for ethanol production. Varieties of ionic liquids have demonstrated the ability to fragment lignocellulose. However, after fragmentation, separation of biomass and ionic liquids …
Noncovalent Interactions Involving Microsolvated Networks Of Trimethylamine N-Oxide, Kristina Andrea Cuellar
Noncovalent Interactions Involving Microsolvated Networks Of Trimethylamine N-Oxide, Kristina Andrea Cuellar
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis research focuses on the effects of the formation of hydrogen-bonded networks with the important osmolyte trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO). Vibrational spectroscopy, in this case Raman spectroscopy, is used to interpret the effects of noncovalent interactions by solvation with select hydrogen bond donors such as water, methanol, ethanol and ethylene glycol in the form of slight changes in vibrational frequencies. Spectral shifts in the experimental Raman spectra of interacting molecules are compared to the results of electronic structure calculations on explicit hydrogen bonded molecular clusters. The similarities in the Raman spectra of microsolvated TMAO using a variety of hydrogen bond …
Structural Analysis Of Bulky Thiolate-Protected Gold Nanomolecules, David Walton Crasto
Structural Analysis Of Bulky Thiolate-Protected Gold Nanomolecules, David Walton Crasto
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Routine preparation of thiolate-protected gold nanomolecules involves, most commonly, straight-chain organic thiolate ligands for which the sulfhydryl `head' group is bound to a primary carbon atom. The primary connectivity of these sulfur atoms, such as for the case of n-hexanethiol and phenylethanethiol, allows for even packing, and the relative ease of formation of gold-thiolate oligomers about the surface monolayer in the formation of Au-SR bonds. Moreover, these straight-chain ligands routinely support the formation of an icosahedron-based series of core-size gold nanomolecules. Within this series of nanoparticles, Au25(SR)18 and Au38(SR)24 are among the most commonly studied core-sizes; Au25(SR)18 is situated upon …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Suspended sediments are a global-scale pollutant that threaten the integrity of our waterways and pose an environmental threat to many aquatic ecosystems. Innovative techniques are required to continuously monitor this pollutant. Ultrasonic acoustic measurements have the potential to improve the temporal resolution of fluvial sediment data. This work investigates the use of a prototype field grade single-frequency acoustic attenuation system that was developed at the National Center for Physical Acoustics (NCPA), located at the University of Mississippi. This field-deployable unit consists of two 20 MHz immersion transducers that are aligned in a "pitch-catch" configuration at a fixed distance of 18 …
Random Forests Based Rule Learning And Feature Elimination, Sheng Liu
Random Forests Based Rule Learning And Feature Elimination, Sheng Liu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Much research combines data from multiple sources in an effort to understand the underlying problems. It is important to find and interpret the most important information from these sources. Thus it will be beneficial to have an effective algorithm that can simultaneously extract decision rules and select critical features for good interpretation while preserving the prediction performance. We propose an efficient approach, combining rule extraction and feature elimination, based on 1-norm regularized random forests. This approach simultaneously extracts a small number of rules generated by random forests and selects important features. To evaluate this approach, we have applied it to …

Identification And Characterization Of Human Plasma Prekallikrein-Prolylcarboxypeptidase Interaction Sites, Jingjing Wang
Identification And Characterization Of Human Plasma Prekallikrein-Prolylcarboxypeptidase Interaction Sites, Jingjing Wang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Prolylcarboxypeptidase isoform1 (PRCP1, also known as angiotensinase C, PCP, PRCP, PrCP) is a widely distributed serine protease found throughout the human body. PRCP1 removes the C-terminal amino acid which is next to a proline residue of a peptide. Through this activity, PRCP1 is postulated to play distinct biological roles including the regulation of vascular homeostasis, the induction of inflammation and the adjustment of metabolism. Compelling evidence indicates that human PRCP1 activates plasma prekallikrein (PK) to kallikrein on endothelial cells. However, the mechanism of this activation is yet unknown. The formation of kallikrein leads to the generation of proinflammatory factors and …
Solubility Enhancement Via Melt Extrusion: Drug-Polymer Solubility, Physicochemical Characterization And Quality By Design, Ketaki Patwardhan
Solubility Enhancement Via Melt Extrusion: Drug-Polymer Solubility, Physicochemical Characterization And Quality By Design, Ketaki Patwardhan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Many new drugs developed face oral delivery challenges and absorption due to poor biopharmaceutical properties. Formation of solid dispersions is a very widely applied technique for solubility enhancement of water insoluble drugs. In order to form stable solid dispersions it is important to select appropriate excipients that will maintain the drug in its amorphous form for an extended period of time. Selection of appropriate excipients is critical during the development of stable amorphous solid dispersions. The solubility parameter concept has been explored for theoretically identifying the excipients that will be suitable based on the structure of the active. In this …

Design, Synthesis And Evaluation Of Diphenylamines As Mek5 Inhibitors, Suravi Chakrabarty
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK) are a family of interrelated signal transduction kinases mediating intracellular responses to extracellular events. They are involved in mediating complex cellular events including, cell differentiation, cell proliferation, and cell death. Extracellular mitogens or the binding of other ligands to cell-surface receptors begin a signaling cascade that activates MEK resulting in phosphorylation of its corresponding and specific and parallel ERK (Extracellular signal-Regulated Kinase) substrate. The MEK5/ERK5 pathway is involved in cell survival, anti-apoptotic signaling, angiogenesis, and cell motility. It is significantly up-regulated in specific tumor types including breast and prostate cancers. A novel series of compounds …

Molecular Evolution Of Hominoid Primates: Phylogeny And Regulation, Ranajit Das
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The complete mtDNA of one eastern gorilla was sequenced to provide the most accurate date for the mitochondrial divergence of gorillas. The most recent common ancestor of eastern lowland and western lowland gorillas existed about 1.9 million years ago, slightly more recent than that of chimpanzee and bonobo. This study also depicts that the eastern and western gorillas show species level genetic divergence.
Hominoid mating systems differ tremendously. The level of sperm competition varies according to the mating system, which presumably imposes unique selective pressures on the seminal proteins of each species. Cartilage acidic protein 1 (CRTAC1) was identified in …

Conscience And Community: Exploring The Relationship Between Conscience Formation And Systemic Corruption (In Nigeria), Augustine E. Ebido
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This research focuses on the impact of the moral community (or social context) on the formation of conscience and its implication for moral responsibility. It is an interdisciplinary approach to theological reflection that is particularly attentive to psychological, philosophical, sociological, and neurobiological viewpoints showing how these have either distorted or broadened our understanding of conscience in its relation to community and social responsibility, or its formation in relationship to our moral development. It stresses reciprocity of conduct (for we are "responders") and the complementarities of internal and external sanctions. It insists that the influence of conscience on behavior is undermined …

Beyond Symptom Accumulation: A Lacanian Clinical Approach To Obsession - A Case Study And Theoretical Exposition, Julie L. Futrell
Beyond Symptom Accumulation: A Lacanian Clinical Approach To Obsession - A Case Study And Theoretical Exposition, Julie L. Futrell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Contemporary approaches to psychotherapeutic intervention increasingly utilize a medical-based diagnostic system focused on identifying and eradicating discrete symptoms. Mental "disorders" are determined by identifying "pathological" behaviors and superficial symptoms which are then lumped together arbitrarily and labeled as specific "mental illnesses." Despite a gross lack of supporting evidence, these "mental illnesses" are then attributed to various brain abnormalities and biological malfunctions, most often with reference to "chemical imbalances" believed to be the origin of mental distress. Evidence for such biological reductionism is presented conclusively, with little regard for the implicit ontological assumptions made by such a positivist perspective. When psychopathology …

Computational methods in drug discovery reduce research time and costs, and only now can be applied to certain psychiatric conditions due to recent breakthroughs in determining the 3D structures of relevant drug receptors in the brain. A new computational technique, de novo fragment-based drug design (DFDD), was evaluated employing a dopamine D3 receptor (D3R) crystal structure. Three DFDD approaches - scaffold replacement, ligand building, and MedChem Transformations - were assessed in replacing structural portions of eticlopride, a D2/D3R-specific antagonist, to generate compounds of novel drug scaffold. Pharmacological characterization of the compounds determined their binding affinities at target brain receptors. Analogs …
