The Water Quality Act of 1965 sets forth the national policies for water pollution prevention, control, and abatement for interstate waters. This act requires all states to prepare water quality standards for the interstate waters within their boundaries. In compliance with this requirement, the "Water Quality Standards for the Surface Waters of South Dakota" was adopted in 1967, thus establishing official parameters of water quality for all surface waters in the state. These standards take into account the three principal sources of pollution in the state which are municipal, industrial, and agricultural. Of particular interest is the contamination of these …

False wireworms were important pests of wheat on the Great Plains during the early 20th century. Until recently, they were of little importance; however, they are now occasionally appearing in damaging proportions. The purpose of studying the biological and ecological aspects of these insects in South Dakota was to understand the factors responsible for their demise and the circumstances that could affect the recurrence of damaging populations. Surface runoff from snowmelt and rainfall was measured 1n eastern South Dakota from seven sites (7.18 to 18.69 acres) during 1971 and 1972. All sites had single crops which included corn, oats, pasture and hayland. All land was farmed under normal farming conditions. Samples were taken periodically throughout each runoff event, and a single composite sample was made from the individual samples for a particular site. The composite sample represented the entire runoff event. The amount of rainfall and the runoff flow were measured. Determinations on the composite sample included total coliform, fecal coliform, fecal streptococcus, soluble pesticides, specific conductance, …

“Domestic poultry constitutes the largest single reservoir of Salmonella organisms existing in nature,” stated J. E. Williams of the Southeast Poultry Research Laboratory, Athens, Georgia. He reported that the frequency of salmonellae reported in poultry is due to the high population exposed to salmonellae and the extensive programs involved in isolation and identification. The 1971 annual Summary of Salmonella published by the Center for Disease Control, Atlanta, Georgia reports 25,694 cases of salmonellosis in humans. This figure represents an increase of 6.1% over the 24,216 cases reported in 1970, and a 16.6% increase over the 21,413 cases reported in 1969. …

Food poisoning is a phrase commonly used in reference to any foodborne illness. Foodborne illnesses caused by bacteria are of two types: (1) food infections caused by organisms such as the salmonellae which multiply and cause infections in the intestine, or (2) food intoxications caused by organisms such as staphylococci and clostridia that release a toxin into the food prior to ingestion by a susceptible person. A study of giant Canada goose (Branta Canadensis maxima) restoration in western South Dakota was conducted during 1970 and 1971. Nesting, production and mortality, homing, and pioneering were evaluated both years. Nesting began April 4 in 1970 and extended for 73 days, but the peak of nesting occurred from April 29 to May 5. In 1971, nesting began April 1 and continued for 69 days, with the peak occurring April 8-14. The peak of hatching occurred June 6-12 in 1970 and May 8-14 during 1971. An antibacterial agent is a substance which destroys or suppresses bacterial growth or reproduction. Gerhard Domagk's discovery of the antibacterial activity of the sulfonamides began one of the brightest eras in modern anti-bacterial chemotherapy. The sulfonamides are effective and are still used today but the introduction of the antibiotics has made them less popular. Antibacterial agents cannot be classified by one chemical grouping or mechanism of action. The phenols and alcohols act by denaturing protein while others, such as arsenic and the heavy metals, exert their effect by combining with the sulfhydryl grouping present as an active site on certain …

Two eutrophic northern prairie lakes, Lake Cochrane and Lake Hendricks, were sampled regularly for chemical characteristics, temperature, transparency, phytoplankton and zooplankton populations. Primary production was determined by the "light" and "dark" bottle technique. Values for the 1971 summer study period ranged from a low of 59.l7 mg C fixed/m2/hr. to a high of 296,67 with a mean of 151.67 for Lake Cochrane. Values for Lake Hendricks ranged from 25.00 to 194.17 with a mean of 110.83. The possibilities of nutrient limitation were investigated through nutrient enrichment experiments in the field. When hemagglutination is caused by the virus particle itself, a particle joins two red blood cells together by forming a bridge between them. If sufficient hemagglutination particles are present, the red cells form clusters of larger aggregates which fall to the bottom of the test tube or well. It is this sort of biophysical phenomenon which is being investigated in this study. Rather than using red blood cells as the adsorbent, to the surface of which the virus adsorbs, some solid adsorbents have been utilized to substitute for the red cells in a variety of experimental manipulations. Statement of the problem. The central problem of this study was twofold: (1) to determine whether the educational research preparation offered by selected colleges and universities bore out the findings of critics, and (2) to synthesize and synergize opinions and facts regarding educational research, as expressed by men active in the field, into a flexible proposal whereby individual student's programs in research preparation could be "custom-made" to suit their most obvious research needs.
