The spider plant, Chlorophytum elatum R. Br., is a member of the lily family. It originated in south Africa and has spread all over the world as an ornamental plant. The plant occasionally sets seeds, but its propagation depends mainly on vegetative means. This method of reproduction provides the plant with chances or extended exposures to various environmental stresses, and genic and/or chromosomal mutations may result. In one of the Chlorophytum stocks maintained in the Botany greenhouse, Chen first noted that heterozygous inversion existed. Further cytological observation of another stock morphologically similar to the one Chen observed also revealed the …

Data were gathered on seasonal movements and habitat selection of 30 pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) cocks that were radio-equipped in eastern South Dakota from 1970 to 1972. Pheasant cocks stayed in an area of less than 100 acres from spring through hunting season. In winter, cocks used even smaller areas more intensively. Cocks moved about their home range by shifting their activity center rather than by adjustment in range of daily travel. Adult cocks seemed to have strong site attachments on a year-round basis. Immature cocks were more mobile, especially during the fall prior to hunting season. In spring, adult cocks …

Cattle use of a deer winter range in the Black Hills was investigated during the summer grazing seasons of 1971-1972. A U.S. Forest Service grazing allotment situated between Mystic and Redfern, South Dakota, was used as the study area. The allotment was divided into five grazing units or pastures managed collectively under a “rest-rotation” system of grazing. Three study sites were selected in each unit of the allotment, and 75 exclosures were erected on each site; a paired-plot method was used to collect data. The trend in dairying in recent years has been towards more confinement housing and higher producing animals. Such confinement housing often leads to year-around feeding of stored feeds, such as silage, haylage, and hay with no pasture grazing or feeding of freshly cut forages. Since stored feeds contain substantially less vitamin E than those same forage when freshly cut or grazed, it may be important to re-evaluate the vitamin E status of cows fed stored feeds continuously. The requirement of cattle for vitamin E are largely unknown. The one study involving adult cattle, conducted 25 years ago, found that 1.82 …

Throughout the past decade, there has been remarkable increase of interest in studies of bacterial L-forms and mycoplasmas. These studies have enriched our understanding of the functions of various components of bacterial cells. Questions of primary interest deal with the probable role of L-forms in recurrent infections and in disease. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effect of Listeria L-forms on impregnation of mammals. The impact of radiation on man has become increasingly important in recent years. Since humans cannot be used as experimental subjects, the experimental work with radiation must be conducted with other species. The domestic fowl possesses pertinent advantages which make it desirable for studying some of the aspects of radiation. Chicken embryos can readily be irradiated under various conditions. The relatively short life span of the chicken hastens the acquisition of results and therefore more experiments-may be conducted within a given period of time. The objective of this study was to determine the effects on the lipid metabolism of rats mediated by high levels of dietary sucrose or cornstarch and low levels of butter or corn oil, combined with varied amounts of phosphate. The experiments were based on the hypothesis that if large amounts of sugar are present in the diets, the amount of rnetabolically available phosphate could become limiting. If this hypothesis is true, so that greater activity of hexose monophosphate shunt enzymes and relatively less activity of glycolytic pathway could result, increased synthesis of fatty acids and cholesterol may occur. The World Health Organization defines an arbovirus as follows. An arbovirus must produce a viremia in one or more vertebra species, multiply in some arthropod that feeds on viremic blood and be transmitted through feeding. Ticks and mosquitoes are the main arthropod vectors that transmit this virus. The fact that the Missouri Basin states have had the post extensive epidemics of western equine encephalitis (WEE) and St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) in the country makes South Dakota an excellent area for concentrated arbovirus studies. It was the purpose, therefore, of this work, to investigate the preparation, properties, and reactions of bisimines of 2,2,4,4- tetramethyl-1,3-cyclobutanedione, to determine the chemical effects of carbon π-bonded to nitrogen. Certain of these effects are compared to carbon π-bonded to oxygen in a structurally similar environment.

This paper presents the results of the taxonomic investigation of the Eriophyoidea in South Dakota. Information is given on the morphology, discussion of variation within a population, distribution, damage in host plants, economic importance and techniques of collecting and preparing specimens. There are 42 previously described species included in this study. Of the 48 species studied, six are new. Species described are: Aculops maximilianae, Diptacus pengsonae, Eriophyes arceosae, Eriophyes taylori, Tegonotus lindenus, and Tetra mcdanieli.

In an attempt to elucidate the role of nematodes in a grassland ecosystem nematode taxa, number and biomass data was gathered over a three year period at the Cottonwood International Biological Program Grassland Biome site in western South Dakota. The effects of grazing intensity, sampling date and sampling depth were studied. Nematicide treatment of range grasses in field and greenhouse studies was also used to evaluate the role of nematodes. Biomass data was used to estimate the intake of plant feeding nematodes. Results obtained demonstrate that soil inhabiting nematodes constitute a significant proportion of the consumer biomass at the Cotton[1]wood …

A laboratory colony of Altica carduorum Guer. was established from a stock colony of 50 adult beetles. They had an average previposition period of 7 days when exposed to a regular cycle of 16 hr. of light (24° C) and 8 hr. of darkness (12.75° C). Under these conditions, females laid an average of 259.3 ± 9.7 eggs, and longevity averaged 100 days. The eggs are laid on the underside of leaves along edges of leaf veins throughout June. Adults fed and overwintered in the soil, and some beetles emerged the following spring and laid viable eggs. Laboratory studies indicate …

This study, then, was undertaken to develop a universal, in vitro, extracellular method utilizing fluorescence and radioactive 125I to rapidly detect, identify, and quantitate pathogenic viruses and viral antibodies. Focus of the study is the CLAM model, which consists of inert latex particles, plus four radioactively labeled components: antibody, virus, enzyme (RNase) and fluorochrome (FITC).

Available phosphorus, organic carbon, and organic nitrogen were measured in bottom sediments of 16 lakes and ponds in northeast South Dakota. These lakes were glaciated, relatively shallow, and productive. Ranges of the surface sediments were: available phosphorus, 2 to 42 ppm; organic carbon, 0.94 to 5.34 percent; and organic nitrogen, 0.29 to 0.79 percent. Ranges of subsurface sediments were: available phosphorus, 2 to 39 ppm; organic carbon, 0.54 to 6.06 percent; organic nitrogen, 0.19 to 0.88 percent. Concentrations in most lakes varied little from top to bottom. Hard-bottomed lakes generally decreased in nutrient concentrations from sediment surface of subsurface. Lower …

The upper Big Sioux River Basin, in northeastern South Dakota, was studied to determine the origin and transport of nutrients in the Big Sioux River. The area was divided into three segments. Two of the segments, the Big Sioux River and Willow Creek Basins, were primarily agricultural drainage areas, and one segment was the city of Watertown. Sampling stations were selected to facilitate the determination of nutrient inputs to the river from each of these segments and to determine the nutrient load in the river leaving the study area. Concentration and flow of total phosphate (TP), total organic nitrogen (TON), and total organic carbon (TOC) were measured from November 9, 1971 to November 8, 1972 on the Big Sioux River, Six Mile-North Deer Creek, and Drainage M. The Big Sioux River transported 418,640 x 10 3 m3 of water, 776,880 kg TP, 599,590 kg TON, and 5,419,580 kg TOC during the study-year. The study of spontaneous or induced genetic anomalies has been of considerable benefit to cellular and molecular biology. By observing abnormal developmental processes resulting from genetic mutations, we can come to a better understanding of normal mechanism of gene action. The complex I-locus of autosome IX of the house mouse, Mus musculus, represents an outstanding developmental and genetic system to investigate the control of early mammalian differentiation. A total of 121 indigenous insect taxa representing 9 orders, 64 families, 103 genera and 118 species was collected from Canada thistle (Compositae: Cirsium arvense (L.) Scop.) in South Dakota during 1970 through 1973. This survey identified the major phytophagous and entomophagous insect fauna associated with this noxious weed. The common phytophagous species observed feeding on thistle were all polyphagous and failed to control Canada thistle below the economic level. Field cage releases of adult Ceutorhynchus litura (F.) weevils were made on a thistle infested pasture site located in east central South Dakota during 1972-1973. For more than a century, scientists have recognized that insect diseases are often caused by microorganisms and have suggested that these microbes might be used for insect control. Chemical control methods are presently the most common and effective means of controlling insect pests. The importance of the fecal streptococci as indicators of water pollution has come under increasing scrutiny. in the past decade. This has been due in part to improved methods of detection of fecal streptococci. Also, the fecal coliform and total coliform tests and· their significance have been questioned. The fecal streptococci may furnish a more reliable means of identifying sources of pollution. The fecal streptococci are those gram-positive cocci which occur in the intestinal tract of man and animals. The Sherman criteria for identification of the fecal streptococci are used in Bergey's Manual of Determinative Bacteriology to differentiate the viridans …
