A Design For Advanced Preparation Of Educational Researchers. (Volumes I And Ii), Fon R. Belcher

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Statement of the problem. The central problem of this study was twofold: (1) to determine whether the educational research preparation offered by selected colleges and universities bore out the findings of critics, and (2) to synthesize and synergize opinions and facts regarding educational research, as expressed by men active in the field, into a flexible proposal whereby individual student's programs in research preparation could be "custom-made" to suit their most obvious research needs. (Abstract shortened.)

Feasibility Study For A Biotelemetry Transmitter Using An Integrated Circuit Chip, August Louis Hinz Apr 1972

Feasibility Study For A Biotelemetry Transmitter Using An Integrated Circuit Chip, August Louis Hinz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this research project was to develop a radio telemetry system capable of transmitting the heart rate of the pheasant. Because literature relating to the heart rate of the pheasant is very scarce, data concerning voltage amplitude of the pheasant electrocardiogram (ECG) were needed. To telemeter the heart rate a biotelemetry transmitter was developed. This biotelemetry transmitter is to be used to study the heart rate of' pheasants through the breeding, nesting and brood raising cycle. The transmitter could also be used during the hunting season and other times of stress to determine how pheasants are affected by …

Developmental Analyses Of Biochemical Fuel Cells, Roderick James Mcneil Apr 1972

Developmental Analyses Of Biochemical Fuel Cells, Roderick James Mcneil

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

One of the newest areas of biological research, bioelectrochemistry, involves the production of electrical energy through the action of an enzymatic catalyst on a specific substrate. Previous research in the field of bioelectrbchemistry has led to controversy concerning the mechanisms of microbial (enzymatic) activity for power production. It is the purpose of this study to demonstrate whether particular microorganisms or their associated enzyme fractions are indeed responsible for the electrical activity observed in a biochemical fuel cell (BFC). The microorganisms and their associated enzyme systems utilized in this study are as follows: 1. Asperqillus niger - glucose oxidase (1.1.3.4 B-D-Glucose: …

Properties Of Six South Dakota Bovine Picornaviruses, Janet Marie Mattson Apr 1972

Properties Of Six South Dakota Bovine Picornaviruses, Janet Marie Mattson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Since the first enterovirus isolates in 1957 and rhinovirus isolation in 1962, more than 600 isolations of bovine picornaviruses have been reported. Previous workers have been concerned primarily with serological comparisons among their own isolates. Only two viruses, LCR4 and BEV I, are available to investigators for serologic comparison. Picornaviruses have been isolated from animals with. respiratory diseases, diarrhea, and histories of abortions. Interest has not been that great because of the vast number of strains isolated, and at present, the studied strains have no disease attributed to them. Little has been done with these strains of virus except to …

Mechanism And Regulation Of Nitrogen Assimilation In Klebsiella Pneuminiae M5al, Ming- Liang Li Apr 1972

Mechanism And Regulation Of Nitrogen Assimilation In Klebsiella Pneuminiae M5al, Ming- Liang Li

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The pathway of the nitrogen atom after the initial nitrogen fixation reaction has taken place is not known. This study is an attempt to learn something about the enzymes that are involved in amino acid synthesis. The cell has varying demands for the intermediary metabolites of nitrogen, as the processes of protein and other polymer synthesis vary. In addition, the cell is often confronted with changing supplies of nitrogen and energy, as a function of environmental change. Efficient growth depends upon the optimum utilization of metabolites in response to variation in cellular needs. The bacterium Klebsiella pneumoniae not only has …

Comparison Of South Dakota State University Graduates Of The Home Economics And Of Other Curricula With Respect To Family Living Variables, Janice Hofer Grimm Mar 1972

Comparison Of South Dakota State University Graduates Of The Home Economics And Of Other Curricula With Respect To Family Living Variables, Janice Hofer Grimm

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Marriage and the family as we have known them in the past are currently undergoing greater change at a more accelerated rate than ever before in history. Many writers concerned with the family and social problems would lead us to wonder if marriage is disappearing. There is an increase in communal living, exchange of marriage partners, and "open" campus dormitories. The divorce rate has been climbing steadily for a number of years. But when one looks more deeply into communal life for example, it is discovered that the duration of communal living is generally about two years. A study done …

Untrastructural Morphology Of Bovine Herpesvirus Infected Cells, Carol Ann Larson Mar 1972

Untrastructural Morphology Of Bovine Herpesvirus Infected Cells, Carol Ann Larson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) virus has been shown to cause considerable economic losses in the South Dakota cattle industry. On the average, one in ten cattle abortions are caused by this virus. This amounts to approximately $250,000 lost each year by South Dakota cattlemen. There is no way of determining the economic loss due to the respiratory infections also caused by this virus. As is the case with most virus diseases, control requires extensive knowledge of its biological, physical and chemical properties. The present study was undertaken to determine the effect of IBR virus on the ultrastructure of a bovine …

An Expression Of Hybrid Vigor And A Characterization Of Callus Tissue Of Zea Mays L., Judy Winkler Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It is theoretically possible to culture any tissue from any plant or animal, but little work has been done on the major grain crops, especially Zea mays, because they are monocotyledons and present special problems in tissue culturing because of their slow growth. This thesis reports an attempt to grow and redifferentiate callus tissue of corn. The objectives of the research were: (1) to test the ability of different inbred and hybrid corn varieties to form callus and (2) to characterize the callus cell ultrastructure. Since so much is known about corn on the genetic level, it is appropriate to …

The Relationship Of Hitting Ability In Baseball To Selected Anatomical Measurements And Motor Responses, Larry Lester Edlund Mar 1972

The Relationship Of Hitting Ability In Baseball To Selected Anatomical Measurements And Motor Responses, Larry Lester Edlund

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Batters in all classifications of baseball, whether on the little league level or on the major league level, consistently strive for hitting proficiency. They know that baseball games are won by scoring runs. Hitting is a very important part of baseball but even the best hitters fail more than sixty percent of the time to hit safely. An example of this problem is evident in surveying the averages of the batting champions of the National and American League. During the years of 1928, 1948, and 1968, the National League batting champions had averages of 387, .376, and .335, respectively, and …

Tissue Ammonium Nitrogen In Sheep Tongue, Liver And Kidney Following Death By Ammonia Intoxication, Dale L. Jaquette Mar 1972

Tissue Ammonium Nitrogen In Sheep Tongue, Liver And Kidney Following Death By Ammonia Intoxication, Dale L. Jaquette

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Urea was introduced as an economical nonprotein nitrogen source for ruminant animals. In the gastrointestinal tract, urea is hydrolyzed in the presence of bacterial urease to ammonia and carbon dioxide. The liberated ammonia is utilized by rumen microorganisms for amino acid synthesis. Ammonia not used by microorganisms diffuses through the gastrointestinal lining and is transported to the liver by blood, where enzymes synthesize urea by combining two moles of ammonia and one mole of carbon dioxide. The nontoxic urea is excreted by the kidney or secreted with saliva and other digestive fluids for recycling. Ammonia intoxication occurs when more ammonia …

From pre- and post- spray counts of adult flies on cows it was determined that Ravap reduced horn flies and face flies 69.6% and 26.1% respectively, one day after application. One week after application, however, horn flies had increased 217.4% over prespray counts, and face flies had increased …

Sulfur And Methionine Supplementation With Urea For Feedlot Cattle, Bryan E. Davidson Mar 1972

Sulfur And Methionine Supplementation With Urea For Feedlot Cattle, Bryan E. Davidson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Protein is often a limiting nutrient in animal diets. As ruminant animals have the ability to convert large quantities of nonprotein nitrogen to protein, the cost of protein supplementation can be greatly reduced by substituting cheaper nonprotein nitrogen compounds in protein supplements for certain amounts of preformed protein. This process is mediated through rumen microorganisms and, to date, urea has been the most widely used nonprotein nitrogen compound in ruminant diets. Efficiency of urea utilization may be affected by several factors. Among these are level and source of energy, level and source of protein and percent urea in the total …

The Relationship Of Jump Shooting Ability In Basketball To Selected Measurable Traits, Donald F. Dahl Mar 1972

The Relationship Of Jump Shooting Ability In Basketball To Selected Measurable Traits, Donald F. Dahl

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The game of basketball has undergone changes over the years and today it is a fast-moving game wherein all of the players have an opportunity to score. The very nature of the game indicates that accurate shooting is essential to the final outcome. Sharmin stated the obvious, that in basketball, the team which wins scores more points than its opponent, and “Accurate shooting is the backbone of the game." This idea is supported by Benington and Newall who stated that "The skill of shooting has probably developed more than any other aspect of the game of basketball." Part of the …

Manganese-Iron Relationships Influencing Certain Blood Parameters And Organogenesis In Pregnant And Fetal Rabbits, Gerald R. Cizadlo Mar 1972

Manganese-Iron Relationships Influencing Certain Blood Parameters And Organogenesis In Pregnant And Fetal Rabbits, Gerald R. Cizadlo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The importance of studying manganese involves its essentiality as a nutrient and its antagonism and interrelations with other essential dietary components. Manganese was first shown to be essentia1 for plant growth by McHargue. Weinberg found that bacteria require manganese for growth, for culture longevity, and to synthesize antibiotics, bacteriophage, protective antigens, several enzymes and endospores. No other metal would satisfy this requirement. Underwood stated that manganese was essential to poultry to prevent perosis and nutritional chondrodystrophy. It was necessary in mammals for normal growth and reproductive function. Specific biochemical roles for manganese have been found. Pyruvate carboxylase activity has been …

The Effects Of Identified Student Characteristics On Their Understanding Of Science, Patricia Mutch Cheeseman Mar 1972

The Effects Of Identified Student Characteristics On Their Understanding Of Science, Patricia Mutch Cheeseman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study-was undertaken to try to identify which factors most influence the process of learning science in an ISCS Year I classroom. Because of the breadth of the subject, it has seemed desirable to limit the factors to be considered to those which could be termed "characteristics" of the students. Therefore, recognizing the fact that characteristics alone cannot present the whole picture, occasional mention will be made of other contributing elements. It should be understood that only the characteristics to be named in a later section were included in the statistical analysis. It was expected that no specific student characteristic …

Analysis Of Selected Knife Fertilizer Applicators For Grassland Improvement, Vincent James Alsaker Feb 1972

Analysis Of Selected Knife Fertilizer Applicators For Grassland Improvement, Vincent James Alsaker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Soil nutrients need to be replenished from year to year. Nitrogen is a primary structural block in· proteins, chlorophyll, and many other compounds of plant and animal matter. One method of nutrient replenishment is to apply commercial fertilizer. This is especially important for pastures and grassland since very little organic matter is annually returned and mixed into the soil by cultural practices. Anhydrous ammonia, NH3, is one of the common nitrogen carrier fertilizers. Nitrogen fertilizers include anhydrous ammonia, which is handled as a liquid under pressure, liquid solutions, and nitrogen compounds in a granular state. Anhydrous ammonia injected beneath the …

Influence Of Weather On Movement And Habitat Use Of Hen Pheasants During Brood Rearing, James M. Ruth Jan 1972

Influence Of Weather On Movement And Habitat Use Of Hen Pheasants During Brood Rearing, James M. Ruth

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Pheasants survive in a wide range of yearly weather extremes but can be limited by certain short-term weather factors (Graham and Hosterburg 1948). Study of short-term weather conditions can therefore be important in understanding pheasant survival. Many studies have been done on yearly and seasonal effects of weather on pheasant production and survival. Bemitt and Terril (1940) reported on possible temperature factors in pheasant management in the north central area of the United States. Effects of weather on pheasant reproduction were studied by Buss and Swanson (1950) and Kozieky et al. (1955). MacKullan and Eherhardt (1953) studied the tolerance of …

Biological Studies Of The Bumblebees Of Eastern South Dakota, Francis Paul Andress Jan 1972

Biological Studies Of The Bumblebees Of Eastern South Dakota, Francis Paul Andress

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Most individuals over the age of 10 have had some experience with the large, colorful Hymenoptera known as bumblebees. Because bumblebees are important pollinators of crops, and wild and native flowers both in the United States and foreign countries, many aspects of their life cycle have been studied. Both Nebraska and Wisconsin have research bulletins covering identification, distribution, emergence, and floral hosts of the bumblebees of their respective states. The lack of information about bumblebees in South Dakota initially prompted my studies. My objective became the filling-in of some of the missing pieces in South Dakota's bumblebee puzzle. My study …
