Characterization Of A Bovine Parvovirus, Thomas J. Langpap

Bovine parvovirus has been shown to produce calf scours (40). Although exact figures are unavailable, a sizeable economic loss is suffered annually by South Dakotans as a result of this disease. Bovine parvovirus has been isolated in South Dakota (7). However, the extent of exposure to the virus is unknown. The object of this study is to characterize the South Dakota parvovirus isolate and determine by serological methods the extent of exposure in cattle. A preliminary study to determine the ability of parvovirus to cause abortion in cattle will also be undertaken.

Despite the extensive data that have accumulated on the detrimental effect of molds on the growth of farm animals, very little is known as to the beneficial role of fungi in animal feed. Recent studies at South Dakota State University research laboratories revealed, however, that only 164 of 392 strains of Aspergilli were found to be toxic. When the cultures were grown on sterile soybeans or wheat, some of the tested cultures exerted positive effects on growth of chicks and mice. Hence, the investigations reported herein were initiated to obtain further information on those cultures beneficial to chick performance and …

A photolysis system was designed for meticulous exclusion of oxygen and moisture. Photolyzed ethanol solutions of dioxobis(acetylacetonato)­-molybdenum(VI), Mo02 (acac)2, were studied via preparation of derivatives with several uninegative bidentate ligands (chelH, cysteine was designated cystH2) and pyridine (py). Infrared spectroscopy was a useful tool in identifying these compounds. An oxomolybdenum(IV) compound, MoO(dtc)2 was isolated from the red photolyzed solution when dtc was the N,N-diethyldithiocarbamate ion. Tropolone, 8-hydroxyquinoline, N,N-diethyldithiocarbamate, and cysteine formed products formulated as the dioxo bridged molybdenum(V) compounds, Mo204(che1)2. In experiment I a series of in vitro buffer and rumen fermentation studies were conducted to evaluate protein solubility at pH 6.8 and pH 2.5 (with pepsin) and ammonia production from whey protein concentrates (WPC, 55% protein) treated with 0, .25, .5, 1.0, and 3% formaldehyde; 1, .5, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, and 6% tannic acid; and 0, 1, 2, and 3 hr of heat treatment at 104 C. A study of the 1970 South Dakota population was conducted to determine: (1) the extent of disadvantagement by magnitude and residence; (2) the association between the extent of disadvantagement and selected socio-economic factors; and (3) the extent to which factors explaining disadvantagement also served to predict migration based on the net migration experiences of South Dakota counties during 1960 to 1970. The county was selected as the unit of analysis. Selected data from the census were aggregated and tabulated. Selenium biochemistry has been of general interest since the discovery of selenium as the toxic agent in certain plants, which when ingested by animals causes a definite disease syndrome and even death. Early scientists suggested that the logical place in the body for toxic selenium compounds to attack was at the various sites occupied by sulfur. In 1939 a study was published which indicated that reduced glutathione (GSH), a thiol, protected rats against death from a minimum fatal dose of selenium given as sodium selenite. The rapid increase in raw potato production has been accompanied by an even greater increase in the amount of processed potatoes. In 1946, only 4.6 percent of the annual potato production was processed into specialty items. By 1960, 32 percent of the total potato crop was being processed. Predictions for 1970 were that more than 50 percent of the raw potatoes would be processed into potato food products. Approximately 36 percent of the potatoes processed in 1964 consisted of frozen potato products. Predictions by DuPont indicate that by 1976, over 3926 million pounds of frozen potato products will be produced. …

Whenever man begins to alter these naturally occurring events, problems arise which must be answered. In the case of engineered soil systems, it is the engineer who must cope with these problems. As discussed later in the review of literature, previous studies conducted on similar types of soil at different locations have revealed different infiltration rates and quality improvements. These contrasting results have indicated that data obtained from other studies cannot be used to reliably predict the infiltration rates or improvements in water quality for soils at different locations. Current discussions often link economic growth as a causative factor in the increase of pollution. Growth in the economy has a number of causes. These include technological innovation, resource discovery and population growth along with the most widely discussed, investment. Economic growth in its advanced stages can cause severe depletion of raw materials, environmental pollution from energy use, and overtaxing of the environment's capacity to absorb and recycle waste products. An investigation of duck production on six Waterfowl Production Areas (WPA’s) in northeastern North Dakota was conducted during 1970-73. This investigation was conducted in conjunction with habitat-manipulation study by the Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center that entailed prescribed burning of three WPA’s. Wetland habitat conditions, breeding populations and nesting were evaluated all four years. Brood observations were made during the last three years and nesting cover was evaluated during the last two years of investigation. Wetland habitat conditions were generally favorable during the first three years of investigation but in 1973 wetland conditions were extremely poor due to low precipitation …

In part one I report on the results of a survey I conducted in Spink County, South Dakota, to determine the abundance and seasonal distributions of horse flies and deer flies (Diptera: Tabanidae), which bother livestock and people. The proposed Oahe Unit of the Pick-Sloan Missouri River Basin Program will provide many additional acres of tabanid habitat to this area. Two sites in southeastern South Dakota were used in this study. Both sites supported unusually dense infestations of C. nutans and were chosen on that basis. Site A was located at an unoccupied farmstead in Minnehaha County, 2 miles S.W. of Crooks. This site was composed of 3 distinct infestations of musk thistle: (1) the first stand of thistles was approximately 2 x 9 m surrounded by Siberian elm, Ulmus pumila L., Conyza canadensis (L.) The declared objective of the Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1972 is "to restore and maintain the chemical, physical, and biological integrity of the Nations waters. " A schedule of required treatment is also· promulgated that calls for the equivalent of secondary treatment by July 1, 1977 and the best practicable waste treatment by July 11, 1983 for all publicly owned treatment plants. A study was conducted to develop a reliable method to measure presence and quantity of the toxic factor in ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) needles that interferes with normal maintenance of pregnancy in cattle. Special emphasis was given to biological assay sensitivity during embryo implantation and gestation in laboratory animals. The detrimental component was found to be present in both aqueous and acetone fractions prepared from ponderosa pine needles. There was a reduction in average rat litter size from bred rats fed either the aqueous or acetone pine needle extracts throughout pregnancy. Rats fed pine needle extracts from the winter pine …

Since the 1960's people have become concerned about pesticide residues and their effects on the environment including the human population. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB's), one general class of residues, have been commercially manufactured in the United States since 1929. They have been used in many products such as plasticizers, hydraulic fluids, lubricants, electrical capacitors, electrical transformers, vacuum pumps, heat transfer systems, wax extenders, dedusting agents, surface coatings, adhesives, printing inks, pesticide extenders and carbonless reproducing paper. All ecosystems have two basic biological components. One component is the autotrophic organisms which fix energy from the sun and use inorganic substances to create food. The other is the heterotrophic organisms which utilize the stored food of the autotrophs, rearrange it, and finally decompose the complex materials into simple inorganic compounds. The autotrophs, which are predominantly green plants, grow wherever the most sunlight is available, heterotrophs predominate wherever organic matter accumulates, primarily in the upper layer of the soil. Heterotrophs consist of consumers which feed on green plants and other organisms. Decomposers, chiefly bacteria and fungi that break down …
