Haemophilus somnus was the tentative name given in 1969 to a fastidious gram negative pleomorphic coccobacillus which was consistently isolated from cattle affected with a clinical syndrome called thrombo embolic meningoencephalitis (TEME)(1). The organism was initially classidied as an Actinobacillus actinoides- like organism, but because of its demand for a blood base for primary isolationit was reclassified as Haemophilus-like. Bailie then designated the species name somnus, referring to the sleepiness commonly exhibited by TEME affected cattle(1). The Composition And Dynamics Of The Soil Algal Flora In A Western South Dakota Grassland, Judith Ann Freeman

Forest, Miller and Raizen (1963) and Hutcheson and Olson (1967) have conducted two of the only investigations on soil algae in a prairie ecosystem. The present investigation dealt first with identification of genera of algae present in the soil and an evaluation of their numbers. Secondarily a relationship was established between the numbers of algae in the soil (by species) and their environment, by the correlation coefficients. The variation in the environment was then used to predict the occurrence of algae in the soil using stepwise additive multiple regression analysis. The objective of this research was to determine the effect of corn removal for silage on rootworm oviposition and on the resulting populations and damage the following years. If the corn is removed before oviposition occurs, and if the beetles go elsewhere to lay their eggs, damage to the corn roots the following spring should be prevented. This would save farmers insecticide costs the following year. To determine how adult populations present in the corn field in late summer and fall affect damage to the corn the following spring, corn vegetation was removed on different dates encompassing the time oviposition …

Specific objectives of this report are: 1. To describe in detail the construction and operation of the pilot units, 2. To determine the infiltrative capacity and characteristics of the soil in the pilot units in response to the application of stabilization pond effluent, 3. To determine the effect of basin surface cover type on the infiltrative capacity of the soil, 4. To study the response of the natural groundwater table to periodic floodings, and, 5. To evaluate the feasibility of a full-scale land-infiltration system at this location based on the infiltration and hydraulic characteristics of the soil.

Benthic Macrofaunal Associations In Lake Worth, Florida, And Their Use As Indicators Of Water Quality., John K. Reed

Bimonthly benthic samples (April, 1972 to March, 1973) taken at eleven stations provide quantitative reference data on the benthic macrofaunal communities of Lake Worth in Palm Beach County, Florida. Distribution and structure in relation to sediment types and sources of pollution are discussed. One hundred seventy-one taxa were identified. The five top-ranked species were the bivalve Mulinia lateralis; the polychaetes Spiochaetopterus oculatus, Paraprionospio pinnata, and Glycinde solitaria; and the amphipod Cerapus sp. Stations were grouped as sand, silty-sand, mud, and outfall stations based on similarity of faunal composition and sediment type. The sand and silty-sand stations had the highest diversity …
