The Effects Of Selected Pesticides On Ten Isolates Of Terrestrial Algae., Martha Scheer Salk 1945-

Ten algal isolates were obtained from soil into axenic culture and placed into defined media containing from 0 to 50 ppm of DDT, 2, 4-D,2,4,5-T, rotenone, or malathion (in two purities, 95 and 99%). For nine of the isolates, growth was measured photometrically every two weeks for a period of two months. Because of the twisted growth form, of the tenth isolate, a visual estimation was used to measure its growth over the same period of time. The results of the experiments in the light were as follows: 1) 2,4-D and 2,4,5-T were generally neutral in their growth effects. However, …

The areas studied exhibit different aspects of the problem of orphan strip mines. The Palzo tract is a 192 acre parcel of orphan land in southern Illinois that is being reclaimed by incorporating sewage sludge into the spoil and seeding. Seven sampling stations were established along Sugar Creek which drains the Palzo area. Six of these stations were well above the area to be reclaimed. The seventh was located below the area receiving acid mine drainage. A study of Cairn's, Simpson's, Patten's, Margalef's, Menhinick's, and Wilhm and Dorris' diversity indices at the stations showed that such indices are misleading and …

Food Habits Of Young-Of-The-Year Fishes In Abbey Pond, South Dakota, Randall D. Radant

Food habits of young-of-the-year largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides), bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus), black crappie (Pomoxis nigromaculatus), yellow bullhead (Ictalurus natalis), and yellow perch (Perca flavescens) were studied during 1973 and 1974 in Abbey Pond, South Dakota. Organisms found in young-of-the-year fish stomachs and in plankton samples were identified and counted in the laboratory. Zooplankton, aquatic insects and fish were the most important food organisms consumed by young fishes. Using Ivlev’s electivity index food electivity by the fishes for zooplankton was calculated. The size-specific food habits of young-of-the-year largemouth bass progressed from entomostracans to aquatic insects to fish. In most cases zooplanktons …

Current trends in the dairy industry have resulted in an increase in the incidence of lipase flavored butter. Raw cream, fresh and aged 24 h, was divided into 3 fractions and heat treated at temperatures of 72 C, 85 C, and 93 C. Each fraction of cream was churned into butter, with the butter divided and stored at -28. 9 C and 4.4 C. Lipase flavor development was measured organoleptically, by acid degree value (ADV), and free fatty acids (FFA) using a colorimetric procedure. Age of the cream had a significant effect (P< .01) on FFA and. ADV .levels, whereas heat treatment .of the cream had a significant effect (P< .01) on flavor only. Storage time had a significant effect (P< .01) on FFA, ADV, and flavor and the temperature of storage had a significant effect (P< .01) on FFA ·and flavor. Correlation between FFA and ADV was 0.86. There was no correlation between flavor and either JTFA or ADV

In recent years the biochemical aspects of molybdenum have come under increasing investigation. One phase of the investigation has centered on the function of Mo in nitrogenase enzymes. One way to study the biochemical function of an element with another which may mimic its function. A vanadium containing mitrogenase from Aztobacter vinalaudii has been prepared which displays properties indicative of replacement of the Moo by V. Attempts to prepare an active tungsteu analog have been unsuccessful as W exhibits an inhibitory effect. The purpose of this study was to gain understanding of the variables affecting efficiency of cows and production of their calves to weaning. Specific effects of cow size, condition and milk production on efficiency were examined along with reproductive performance of the experimental females to determine net weaning efficiency. An attempt was also made to examine traits that could be used in practical situations to detect differences in cow efficiency. Previously, pseudorabies was not considered to be a problem in the midwest but prevalence of the disease has increased over the last five years. In 1974 along, eight isolations of pseudorabies virus were made at the South Dakota Animal Disease Research and Diagnostic Laboratory from outbreaks in the area of northwest Iowa, Nebraska, and South Dakota. As of February1, 1975, here isolations of pseudorabies virus have been made from outbreaks in the area. This study was carried out to investigate the metabolism 2, 21, 4, 41, 5, 51 – Hexachlorobiphenyl (C16-PCB). This isomer is a major containing more than 50% weight-to-weight (w/w) chlorine.1 To investigate this isomer, we obtained it in 36C1 labeled and non-labeled forms. We developed procedures to isolate and purify both forms of the hexachlorobiphenyl for further study. The 36C1 labeled biphenyl was then introduced into test animals for metabolic studies.

The present study was designed to determine whether this Coulter Counter for detection of Salmonella typhimurium cells. The latex particles are coated with a specific antiserum which reacts with the particulate antigen, Salmonella cells. An increase in the volume of latex antibody and Salmonella cells is detected by the Coulter Counter data and a teletype to plot the data shortens the time consumption. This method also has a potential to be completely automated.

This is a study of the symbiotic and non-symbiotic nitrogen fixing organisms on Antelope Range Station. Symbiotic nitrogen fixation is carried out by the native leguminous plants and the bacterial genus Rhizobium. This bacterium causes nodules to form on leguminous plants, and this symbiotic relationship is capable of utilizing gaseous nitrogen as a nitrogen source. Some experimentation was also done on a lichen found throughout the area studies. While speciation was not attempted, the lichen specimens were morphologically similar. These lichens also represented a symbiotic relationship, but in this case a nitrogen fixing blue-green algae formed a thallus with a …

With this objective in mind the investigation has been broken down into three segments. 1. Specimens of native legumes were sought on a state wide basis, collected, identified and preserved in a permanent herbarium. 2. This thesis is concerned primarily with the occurrence of nitrogen fixation in native legumes on burned vs. unburned sections of the tall grass prairie. It is also concerned with the isolation of the root nodule bacteria and their identification as rhizobia. The investigation reported here represents an attempt to relate a virus vector simulation model with field observations made in South Dakota over the past years. The viruses that will be examined are two encephalitis viruses, western equine encephalitis (WEE) and St. Louis encephalitis (SLE). Since the encephalitis viruses are grouped within the arboviruses, viruses transmitted by an arthropod vector, any epidemiological study of the human and horse encephalitis outbreak process must include a study of the vector, in this case mosquitoes, and the factors affecting that vector. The present study was conducted to determine if the protein level of layer diets could be lowered from the: commonly used 16 percent to 12 percent by supplementation of some of the essential amino acids without reducing the performance of hens. The amino acids used were methionine, lysine, tryptophan and isoleucine. Egg production, egg shell thickness, interior egg quality, body weight, feed efficiency and free amino acid content of the albumen of eggs produced were criteria used to measure the (--) to treatment.

Listeria monocytogenes has emerged into the realm of disease causing bacteria as a pathogen of public health importance. Its opportunistic and ubiquitous nature has led to an ever increasing number of case reports implicating this organism in human and animal disease. Following its discovery Listeria has been observed in many countries from the tropics to the arctic (6). In addition to human subjects, Listeria has been found with a very wide host range which includes 37 mammals, 17 fowls, ticks, fish, crustaceans, silage, soil, dust, slaughter house waste, stream water, sewage and mud.

A 12.45 hectare South Dakota pond was stocked with 25,000 walleye, Stizostedion vitreum vitreum (Mitichell), fingerling on 13 June, 1973. Walleyes were monitored for growth rate and food habits until 13 September, 1973. Walleyes were removed from the pond using various methods in order to evaluate the efficiency of removal methods. The average total length and average weight of walleyes in the pond increased from 43.5 mm and 0.50 g on 13 June to 167.1 mm and 41.25 g on 13 September. The possibility of predicting prairie lake water quality using remote-sensing data during the 1974 open water season was investigated. Water quality samples were collected to coincide with satellite (LANDSAT-1) overpasses ad low-altitude aircraft flights. Twelve different remote-sensing estimates were taken from LANDSAT-1 imagery, low-altitude aerial photographs, ground-based radiometer, and ground-level photographs. These were correlated with prairie lake water transparency (secchi depth) and algae abundance (chlorophyll ‘a’ and total cell concentrations). For predictive purposes multiple regression analysis were performed using the three water quality parameters as independent variables.
