The Vascular Flora Of Ordway Prairie Mcpherson County, South Dakota, Barry L. Hertz

The vascular vegetation of Ordway Prairie, a preserve maintained by The Nature Conservancy as an example of virgin prairie in McPherson County, South Dakota, was studied to determine its present composition. The sample comprised representatives of each species recognized in each of the 13 square-mile sections within the prairie, collected in 1975 and 1 9 7 6 . Three hundred nine different species, representing 170 genera in 55 plant families were found. One thousand six hundred forty five permanent herbarium specimens, serving as vouchers for their distribution, are now in the herbarium of South Dakota State University .

Mice heterozygous for the dominant AY gene have a yellow coat plus an altered metabolism which results in diverse physiologic characteristics including a greatly increased amount of carcass fat, a longer body and tail length, slightly more muscle mass, increased feed efficiency, increased susceptibility to spontaneous and induced tumor growth, and reproductive inefficiency in females. Homozygous AY animals die in utero. The mutation produces a lesion which is potentially valuable as an investigative· tool for the study of physiologic mechanisms and relationships of diverse metabolic pathways. Bovine ocular squamous cell carcinoma, commonly known as cancer eye, is a common and economically important problem to the U.S. cattle industry. This neoplasm is particularly significant in aged breeding stock. The tumor usually originates from the squamous epithelial cells of the corneal-scleral junction and the nicitating membrane of the eye. Eye cancer lesions progress from small pin point plaques to large tumors involving the eye and surrounding tissue. Also, known numbers of pathogenic species of obligate anaerobes were added to various convenience foods and stored at refrigeration and freezing temperatures to determine their die-off or loss in viability. Yellow leaf spot, caused by Pyrenophora trichostoma (Fr.) Fckl., (Helminthosporium tritici repentis Died.) an ascomycetous fungus of widespread distribution, has played a minor role in the complex of foliar diseases afflicting Triticum species in South Dakota. This these is concerned with a study of the study of the root nodule bacteria associate with native legumes. In the study cultural characteristics were observed along with physiological properties of the native bacterial isolates. These were compared with known rhizobium cultures. Cross inoculation studies were done to see in the rhizobia were specific or had a wide host range. Nitrogen fixation was determined by the Kjeldahl and acetylene reduction methods to determine the amount of nitrogen fixed by the symbiosis of bacterial isolates with the host plant and other legume species.

Variations in chromosome number and/or structure were reported to occur in long-term cultures (Heinz, Mee and Nickell, 1969; Heinz and Mee, 1971; Horak, Lustinec, Mesicek, Kaminek and Polackova, 1975; Kao, Miller, Gamborg, and Harvey, 1970; Nitra and Steward, 1961; Sacristan, 1971; Singh and Harvey, 1975a and b; Torrey, 1959). The objective of this study, then was to determine the auditory sensitivity of the coyote so that optimal repellant frequencies might be selected for further study. The procedures, apparatus, and methodology that were developed for measuring the audiogram using two different approaches are discussed in the following text. The first approaches was to use changes in respiratory patterns as an indicator of the coyote’s auditory sensitivity. The second was to determine the audiogram using operant behavioral techniques.

Fanger of Denmark was the first scientist to generalize the physiological basis for predicting human thermal comfort based on activity level, clothing type, air temperature, air velocity, mean radiant temperature, and air humidity. Thus any activity level and clothing type, it is possible to determine combinations of air temperature, mean radiant temperature, air humidity and relative air velocity which would produce optimum thermal comfort. As is the case with many of the native grass species, western wheatgrass can at times possess a high amount of seed dormancy. This dormancy makes the determination of pure live seed difficult. Consequently, laboratory methods have been sought to completely break this dormancy in order to obtain a true determination of seed viability. Such methods as embryo excision, lemma and plea removal, caryopsis clipping, alternating temperatures, and others have been used with varying success. The value of the mutant corns has been demonstrated in their ability to support superior performance of animals consuming them and in the need for less supplemental protein in diets containing he corns. Research conducted at South Dakota University showed that oats can constitute 60% of the grain portion of growing and finishing swine diets with less supplemental protein and no reduction in pig performance. A computer model was developed to evaluate the energetic efficiency of postweaning beef production of various biological types of cattle fed rations with different energy densities. In Section I, a mathematical model was developed to estimate voluntary feed intake for growing cattle from weaning to slaughter. The mathematical model included effects of differences in energy density and crude fiber content of the ration and in breed and degree of maturity of cattle on feed intake. Each year over 5 million acres of South Dakota’s small grain crop are infested with weeds. Annual broadleaf weeds can reduce small grain yields from 30% to 50%. Weeds compete with crop plants for moisture, nutrients, and light. Blackman and Templeman report that small grains are most sensitive to competition in their early growth stages. However, vigorous, well-nourished cereal crops suppress weed growth. Therefore, early removal of weeds with herbicides should allow for a greater yield response. The Easter lily, L. longiflorum Thunb. Is known not only for its ornamental value, but also for its large chromosomes, making it ideal cytological material. Big bluestem, Andropogon gerardii Vitman, is a South Dakota native grass. It possesses many desirable characteristics and unique adaptations to this region. This research has primarily dealt with the development of methods for cloning the species L. longiflorum and A. gerardii by tissue culture of leaf and/or floral parts. The pattern of plantlet differentiation from the cultures was also histologically studied.

Purine-thiamine anabolism during cellular morphogenesis in Myxococcus xanthus was investigated. One of the approaches was to test vegetative and myxospore (2.5 h and 8 h) extracts of M. xanthus CW-2 for their ability to synthesize the second de novo intermediate, 5'-phosphoribosylglycinamide, from beginning precursors either by way of phosphoribosyl-pyrophosphate amidotransferase (EC 2.4.2.14) or ribose-5-phosphate aminotransferase. Results indicate the presence of both the amido- and aminotransferases in both types of extracts, and both enzymes appear to be present at about the same level (per milligram of protein) in vegetative cells, myxospores (2.5 h and 8 h), and in a bacterial prototype, …

Immediate objectives of the following studies were to characterize and compare normal versus lethal mutant (tW32/tW32) cellular interactions during preimplantation mouse development. Principal experimental methods used included embryo culture and microscopy. Control and mutant embryos were analyzed in vitro to identify chronological events and phenotypic characteristics of tW32 homozygotes. Cell-cell associations of uncompacted and compacted 8-cell control (ICR) embryos were analyzed by quantitative electron microscopy. Lastly, light microscopic analyses were performed on control and mutant (tW32/tW32) morulae.

Levels of certain blood constituents were determined at periodic intervals throughout the study as additional indicators of adequacy in intake for some major nutrients and for measures of general health of the animals. The objective of this thesis is to predict from a theoretical basis the stress redistribution processes occurring within the viscoelastic core of a cylindrical pressure vessel reinforced by an elastic casing around the outer perimeter, and subject to internal pressure applied to the time-dependent inner boundary of the cylinder. Under the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act antibiotics are considered as ·adulterants in milk and milk products. Cultured dairy products cannot be made with milk containing small concentrations -of antibiotics. Also, minute quantities of antibiotics cause allergic reactions in some people. Penicillin is the most common antibiotic to which people are allergic, and penicillin is also the most commonly used antibiotic in the treatment of infections in bovines. Antibiotics, whether injected intravenously or intramuscularly, or infused into the udder of the cow, can be secreted into the milk. It is for this reason that withdrawal times for milk from cows …

The studies report herein were conducted to evaluate (1) if there is a difference in pregnancy rate and litter size in swine between heterospermic and homospermic inseminations, (2) the effect of mixing various fresh cm n components involving spermatozoa in the sperm-rich fraction, seminal plasma from the centrifuged post-sperm fraction and Beltsville Ll extender on oxygen consumption, pH, motility and percent dead spermatozoa and (3) the effect of storage (54 hours) on oxygen consumption, pH, motility and percent dead spermatozoa in the various combinations. One Hampshire and one Yorkshire boar were used in the pregnancy rate and litter size study.

Wild oat (Avena fatua) is a major weed problem in small grains grown in the Central Plains area. Preemergent herbicides have been development which control wild oat. Diallate (S-(2,3-dichlorallyl) diisoprophylthiocarbamate) and triallate (S- (2,3,3-trichloroallyll) diisoprophylthiocarbamate) are preemergent herbicides which give good short-term control of wild oat. However, late germinating wild oat may emerge to reeducate yield. Barban (4-chloro-2-butynyl m-chlorocarbanilate) is a postemergent herbicide, but is effective only at the early growth stages of wheat. A late postemergent herbicide is needed to allow more wild oat to germinate for better full-season control. A late postemergence herbicide would also aid in preventing …

The Entomological Society of America published a tentative method for detection for insecticide resistance in Diabrotica species (Anonymous 1972). In this publication only Diabrotica adults were used for evaluating insecticide resistance on a 24-hour basis. I began studies in 1975 to determine topical data for several insecticides on field collected larvae and adult western corn rootworms. The purpose of this research is to determine if correlations exist between adult and larval LD50 levels using organophosphates and carbamates, as well as comparisons of the larval LD50 data to field performance data.

The need exists for a detection system which is specific in its diagnosis of viruses. The system presented in this investigation uses antiserum treated virus infected cell cultures to establish specificity. The need exists for an automated virus detection system. The system described in this thesis uses the Boulter Counter, a computer analysis, and a simplified procedure which makes the system suitable and automation.
