The objectives of this investigation were: 1) to determine if under dryland conditions the salts present in manure applied to the land would accumulate in the root zone to levels high enough to seriously limit crop production, 2) to determine if the ratio of monovalent to divalent cations present in the manure would upset the balance of these cations in the soil and cause soil structure problems, and 3) to determine if the salts and organic matter added by the manure would affect the soil’s ability to transmit water.

The Investigation Of Several Species Of Bacillus To Determine Their Potential As Biocontrol Organisms On Wheat, Venance H. Lengkeek

Of twenty Bacillus species tested, only five were capable of I vitro inhibition of several wheat pathogens. The mode of inhibition of these five Bacillus species was due to the production of an extra cellular peptide antibiotic which caused disruption of the plasma membrane. Various other physical and chemical characteristics of the antibiotics were also investigated. When applied as seed treatments on spring wheat, the five Bacillus species did not produce significant yield differences. Low soil temperatures at spring wheat planting may have been responsible for the failure of response. The five Bacillus species, B. subtilis var. niger (originally received …

In order to comply with the federal Water Pollution Control act Amendments of 1972, many small communities in South Dakota are faced with the probability of having to update the quality of wastewater that is being discharged. Many of these communities presently use low-cost lagoons or stabilization ponds that provide various degrees of wastewater treatment. With lack of trained personnel for routine operation and maintenance and the inherent financial problems due to a limited tax base, small communities have a definite need for a simple and inexpensive form of wastewater treatment that ill upgrade effluents from stabilization ponds to meet …

Like all mushrooms, the morel mushroom is a fungus. Morels are the fruiting bodies produced by members of the genus, Morchella, Morels are often considered to be a class with truffles by mushroom hunters. Unlike other mushrooms, the morel is not toadstool shaped, but looks like a sponge on a stalk, this makes it easy to identify. There are no poisonous mushrooms that resemble morels. Morels are widely distributed. Morels are known to occur in North America, Europe, and Israel. They are found in a wide variety of topographies, from mountains to plains. The food habits, food selectivity, growth, condition, and population structures of the white crappies (Pomoxis annularis) and black crappies (P. nigromaculatus) in Lake Poinsett, South Dakota, were studied from May, 1975, to May, 1976. The total food volume of 173 adult white crappies consisted of 59.0% plankton1o crustaceans, 25.2 % insects, 14.5 % fish, and 1.3 % miscellaneous organisms. The food volume of 39 adult black crappies consisted of 39.0 % planktonic crustaceans, 3.5 % insects, 57.8 % fish, and 0.7 % miscellaneous organisms. Both species selected Daphnia pulex over other zooplankton and probably contributed to its decline from 193.8/l …

New federal Title IX regulations, more boys enrolling in home economics classes, and an emphasis on family living courses challenge teachers to implement changes to meet the needs of today’s student. A concern and interest of this researcher is the future of marriage and the family. It is anticipated that through this study, new insights can be gained into what factors in the family orientation actually influence the roles young people believe they are to assume after marriage.

A Leptospirosis Survey Of Small Mammals In Brookings County, South Dakota, Raymond Elton Kiewit

Small mammals from western Brookings County, South Dakota were collected and examined for leptospirosis. The major methods used were the microscopic agglutination test and darkfield examination of urine for spirochetes. From 32 sites, a total of 248 animals were collected from which 73 (29.4%) serum samples and 82 (33.1%) urine samples were obtained. Spirochetes were observed in the urine of 3 deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus). One of the deer mice had spirochetes in the urine and agglutinating antibodies to L. wolfii in the serum. Two fundamental problems have been associated with the use of large quantities of water – depletion and deterioration in quality. Present advanced wastewater treatment technology has shown that tertiary treatment of wastewater can produce high quality effluents, but large amounts of energy and chemicals must be sacrificed. An alternative to these costly systems is the land treatment system, which utilizes the soil mantle as a multiprocess “living filter” (2). Infiltration-percolation, a land treatment method, can be used for the reclamation of large quantities of wastewater. Listeriosis, an infectious disease of animals and man, is characterized by localized encephalitis, meningoencephalitis or abortion. In 1933 Listeria was first isolated from a human infant and in the late 1930’s, listeric abortion was first recorded in cattle and sheep. Not until 1950 was much attention given to perinatal listeric infection. Since then, uterine infection and abortion, stillbirth or neonatal death have been reported in virtually all species of animals. Statistics from the South Dakota Animal Research and Diagnostic Laboratory show that abortion cause by Listeria monocytogenes accounted for 48 per cent of the 164 reported cases of listeriosis over …

For several decades, excessive levels of selenium in feeds have been known to cause various toxic symptoms in livestock. Excessive selenium levels in feeds are the result of plants growing on soils which contain significant levels of selenium. The natural cycling process by which selenium becomes available appears to involve various chemical weathering processes. In addition, microbial action may play a direct or indirect role in rendering selenium soluble. (1). Purpose. The purpose of the study was to determine if relationships existed between (1) the observed leader behavior of the school principal as seen by representative teachers and the self concepts of those same teachers, (2) principal self concept and teacher self concept, (3) principal self concept and principal leader behavior, and (4) the way teachers with high self esteem perceived the leadership behavior of the principal and the way teachers with low self esteem perceived the leadership behavior of the same principal. A study of giant Canada geese (Branta canadensis maxima) nesting on stockponds in western South Dakota was conducted during 1974 and 1975. Analysis of 10 selected variables at nests on natural sites indicated that distance of water below high water level and percent slope from wetland to horizon, contributed the most to the use of the site. Distance from wetland to horizon and disturbance factors were two important variables measured to determine use of artificial nesting structures. First nests were initiated on 1 April 1974 and 8 April 1975. Twenty-five nests (16 percent) were located on artificial nesting structures, and …

The fish populations of a 193 km (120 mi) section of the James River between Tacoma Park and Redfield, South Dakota that is scheduled for stream modification under the Oahe Irrigation project were evaluated from October 74 to July 76. Twenty-two species of fish were captured in the James River between Tacoma Park and Redfield, South Dakota. The fishes use the area primarily as a spawning ground and nursery for young-of-the-year. Evidence of spawning was found for 19 species of fish. Only a residual population of forage fishes, young-of-the-year of various species, and a few adult black bullheads attempt to …
