The Relationship Between Exercise Activities And Self-Esteem In Elderly Populations, Marcia Taylor Jun 1986

The Relationship Between Exercise Activities And Self-Esteem In Elderly Populations, Marcia Taylor

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It has been recognized that there is a connection between exercise and mental well-being and studies conducted on college students and employees by Hayden and Allen, Pauley, Palmer, Wright, and Pfeiffer, and Short, DiCarlo, Steffee, and Pavolou all support a positive relationship between physical exercise and a feeling of positive self-worth. It has also been found by Conroy, Smith, and Felthous and Collingwood that physical fitness can function as a therapeutic intervention for mentally and physically debilitated clients. However, none of these studies segregated the findings according to group or individual exercise activities. The potential influence of the group setting …

Effect Of Level Of Exercise Of Self-Care Agency And Selected Pain Treatment Modalities In Surgical Patients, Candice Pederson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Imagine being in severe pain. Imagine having significant pain for an extended period of time. Imagine being dependent on others for the relief of this pain. And imagine the anxiety associated with the uncertainty of not knowing pain relief will come when it is needed. The preceding are common occurrences among those persons facing illness, injury or surgery. The anxiety surrounding the fear that this pain will not be relieved can augment the pain itself. Post-operative pain can lead to complications such as pneumonia, atelectasis, and immobility. For example, research has indicated that measures which decrease pain may increase lung …

A Comparison Of Leadership Styles Between College Physical Education Instructors And College Football Coaches, Randy R. Megard

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The study of leadership in physical education and athletics is a relatively new area but some groundwork has already been laid. Knickerbocker considered the primary function of a leader to be organizing the activities of individuals toward the accomplishment of some end through controlling the means for the satisfaction of relevant needs of members of that group. Leadership is personality in action under group conditions. It includes dominant personality traits of an individual and receptive personality qualities of many persons. Many terms and classifications have been used to describe leaders. Bogardus for example described leadership in relation to other people …

Evaporation losses ranged from 0.5 to 1.4 % for a smooth spray plate sprinkler and from 0.36 to 0.58 % for a coarse serrated plate sprinkler. Measured evaporation …

Effects Of Gamma Irradiation On Chicken Fats, Myung Chul Kim May 1986

Effects Of Gamma Irradiation On Chicken Fats, Myung Chul Kim

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Food irradiation is a process which may provide an alternative to existing conventional food processes. It will not completely replace or substitute for other processes, but its unique qualities offer an additional processing option. A major difficulty with food irradiation is that it can potentially affect all food, and thus it touches on all food issues - from affecting the physical characteristics of food to labeling and consumer acceptance. Research directed toward the use of radiation for the preservation of foods began in 1945. Most of the studies have been government sponsored, at least partly because the 1985 food additives …

Role-Taking And Power In Health Care, Dana Charles De Witt Apr 1986

Role-Taking And Power In Health Care, Dana Charles De Witt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study focuses on differential role-taking ability between physicians and nurses. Many sociologists note, subordinates are in positions of lower structural power than superordinates and therefore must employ other means of control. These other strategies of control come from a person’s own interpersonal skills. This source of power is referred to as personal influence and is considered by Franks, Thomas et. al. Wrong, to be more situated in nature than structural power which is viewed as having a more enduring quality. Most persons, regardless of the power of the position they hold.in a given social context, must interact and role-take …

If themes and forms of support do recur from an earlier speaker to a later speaker, the study may be able to assign cause for such recurrence. Any conclusions that can be drawn explaining why themes and forms of support developed by one speaker recur in the rhetoric of another …

Inhibition Of Psychrotrophic Bacterial Growth In Refrigerated Milk By Addition Of Carbon Dioxide, Robert Francis Roberts Jan 1986

Inhibition Of Psychrotrophic Bacterial Growth In Refrigerated Milk By Addition Of Carbon Dioxide, Robert Francis Roberts

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The advent of on-farm refrigerated storage for raw milk in the late 1940's and its subsequent adoption by North American dairyman 'during the next 20 years essentially eliminated spoilage of milk by lactic acid bacteria. However, refrigeration does not prevent growth of all microorganisms present in raw milk (9, 33, 51, 52, 54, 55). Many microorganisms capable of growth at refrigeration temperatures, termed psychrotrophic bacteria, are present as normal contaminants in raw milk supplies. For purposes of clarity, psychrotrophic microorganisms have been defined as microorganisms capable of growth at 7°C or below regardless of their optimum growth temperature (9). Milk …
