Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The production and use of synthetic chemicals for pesticide control increased dramatically after World War II. They were found to be highly effective, cheap to produce and easy to apply. Development of these chemicals has been one of the major developments for agriculture. In the 1970's public health risks and environmental damage caused by agricultural chemicals was recognized. Problems of chronic exposure, improper waste disposal and environmental damage developed which led to the federal government regulating their use and manufacture. Pesticide manufacturers have a variety of physical and chemical disposal methods for pesticide wastes. Disposal or detoxification methods for pesticides …

Enlightenment, Education And Entertainment : A Study Of The Chautauqua Movement In Kentucky., Judith J. Phillips 1944- Dec 1985

Enlightenment, Education And Entertainment : A Study Of The Chautauqua Movement In Kentucky., Judith J. Phillips 1944-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Chautauqua movement has been called "culture under canvas" and "the university of the people." What began as a training camp for Sunday School teachers on the shores of Lake Chautauqua in western New York State in the 1870's, grew and spread over the midwest for the next fifty years. There were some other permanent Chautauqua establishments, but none seemed to last as long as the original. What did last were traveling tent shows called Chautauquas that brought enlightenment, education, and entertainment to thousands of people over the summer months until the movement died because of technological advancements such as …

A Desegregation Study Of Public Schools In North Carolina, Ransome E. Holcombe Dec 1985

A Desegregation Study Of Public Schools In North Carolina, Ransome E. Holcombe

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate and describe the desegregation of public schools in a selected southern state between the years 1954 and 1974. In developing the research project that described the elimination of legal biracialism in North Carolina's schools, public sentiment emerged as a major factor. North Carolina's public schools were unusual when compared to other states with dual systems because, despite the fact that the state had one of the largest black populations in the nation, the desegregation drama proceeded peacefully and successfully, albeit slowly. Throughout the twenty-year period that was required to completely eliminate the …

Cisplatin Ototoxicity In The Guinea Pig: An Electrophysiological, Morphological, And Biochemical Study, Sarah E. Barron Dec 1985

Cisplatin Ototoxicity In The Guinea Pig: An Electrophysiological, Morphological, And Biochemical Study, Sarah E. Barron

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine changes induced by cisplatin on hair cell (HC) morphology, compound action potential (CAP), Preyer reflex (PR), and Na,K-ATPase activity in the cochlear lateral wall. Guinea pigs were treated with either 0.42, 0.83, 1.17, 1.50 mg/kg cisplatin, i.p. or sterile water for 12 consecutive days and tested on day 13. HC condition was visualized with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), CAP was initiated with a 1 volt click, and Na,K-ATPase activity was measured by the method of Fiske and SubbaRow. HC damage was linear with dose and occurred throughout the turns of the cochlea …

Identifying Characteristics To Use As Descriptors Of Educators’ Potential For Acquiring Computer Literacy, Leota W. Coffey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Purpose. The purpose of this study was to determine whether certain characteristics of public school administrators are present which can be used as descriptors for other educators' potential for acquiring computer literacy from a specific staff development model. Procedure. Participants in the study were 44 public school administrators from the Northwest Education Region of North Carolina. The study was quasi-experimental, using a pretest, treatment, and posttest design. The treatment of the subjects consisted of six three-hour sessions of computer literacy training. It was administered over a 12-week period of time. A model for staff development of computer literacy was designed …

Failure Of Opioids To Modify Noradrenergic Neuronal Recovery From A Dorsal Bundle Lesion In Neonatal Rats, Ellen L. Kunkel-Bagden May 1985

Failure Of Opioids To Modify Noradrenergic Neuronal Recovery From A Dorsal Bundle Lesion In Neonatal Rats, Ellen L. Kunkel-Bagden

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Morphine and exogenous opioid peptides alter the development of central noradrenergic neurons damaged by neonatal treatment with the neurotoxin 6-hydroxydopa. Transection of the dorsal noradrenergic bundle (DNB) in neonatal rats produces nearly the same alteration in the developmental pattern. It was of interest to determine whether morphine or an exogenous opioid peptide (metenkephalin) was able to modify the recovery of noradrenergic neurons after neonatal surgical transection of the DNB. Neonatal rats were divided into two groups. Both groups received saline (0.85%) or naloxone (2.0 mg/kg) by the intraperitoneal (i.p.) route. In the first group the animals received an additional i.p. …
