Environmental And Pharmacological Modulation Of Opioid-Mediated Behavioral Effects In Rats, Corinne Ann Gallagher May 2026

Environmental And Pharmacological Modulation Of Opioid-Mediated Behavioral Effects In Rats, Corinne Ann Gallagher

Theses and Dissertations

Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) and opioid-associated overdoses continue to pose significant burden to US healthcare systems—both financially and in lives lost. It is imperative to identify risk factors which may predispose vulnerability to OUD development, which could aid in discovery of new therapeutic strategies for susceptible populations. This dissertation investigated the impacts of two such risk factors which modulate opioid-induced reward and behavioral effects: adolescent stress and the adulteration of illicit opioids by xylazine. In Chapter 2, we examined the effects of acute adolescent stress on oxycodone self-administration in rats, and the potential involvement of the locus coeruleus in these …

Nursing Leadership in Community Engagement Projects

Improving Emergency Preparedness: Disaster Response Gap Executive Summary

Universities in Washington State have a responsibility to maintain both educational continuity and campus safety, particularly because of the region’s vulnerability to major earthquakes. Although many institutions maintain emergency preparedness plans, the accessibility and strategic placement of emergency resources remain critical concerns. At a private university in Seattle, Washington, the project team identified gaps in earthquake preparedness related to the accessibility, visibility, and availability of emergency supplies.

This project aimed to develop a practical and achievable proposal for university leadership to strengthen disaster preparedness efforts. The project focused on improving access to …

An Ai-Integrated Methodology For Secure Software And System Development, Ian Matthew Campbell Coston May 2026

An Ai-Integrated Methodology For Secure Software And System Development, Ian Matthew Campbell Coston

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Securing interconnected software systems requires more than layering existing frameworks on top of each other. Most current Secure Software and System Development Lifecycle (S-SDLC) models treat security as a phase rather than a design condition, leaving real gaps in governance, access control, and automated enforcement that become critical failure points in Internet of Things (IoT) environments where devices are resource-constrained, long-lived, and frequently insecure by default.

This dissertation introduces the Automated Zero Trust Risk Management with DevSecOps Integration (AZTRM-D) methodology, a novel approach that unifies DevSecOps automation, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Risk Management Framework (RMF), and …

Do Rural-Urban Disparities Translate Into Nursing Complexity At Hospital Admission? Evidence From A Single Tertiary-Care Pediatric Hospital In Italy, Manuele Cesare, Gianfranco Damiani, Gloria Anderson, Jessica Preziosi, Rosemary Frasso, Leonardo Villani, Nursing And Public Health Group, Vittorio Maio, Antonello Cocchieri

College of Population Health Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Rural-urban disparities are well documented in pediatric healthcare, influencing access, service organization, and outcomes. However, whether these differences extend to the domain of nursing care remains unclear. This study examined the association between degree of urbanization and nursing complexity among children admitted to a single tertiary-care pediatric hospital, comparing clinical, organizational, and nursing characteristics across geographic groups.

METHODS: Routinely collected electronic nursing documentation and hospital administrative records were retrospectively examined in a tertiary-care pediatric hospital in Rome, Italy. Children aged 2 to < 18 years were consecutively included. Degree of urbanization was defined using the ISTAT-derived DEGURBA classification. The study outcome for nursing complexity corresponded to the number of nursing diagnoses documented at hospital admission. Descriptive analyses and a multivariable negative binomial regression model assessed the association between urbanization and nursing complexity, adjusting for age, sex, DRG weight, number of medical diagnoses, and chronic conditions.

RESULTS: Among 1652 pediatric hospitalizations, those from rural areas showed a higher clinical burden, with significantly higher …

Academic Freedom's Inflection Point, Jerry C. Edwards

Law Faculty Scholarship

Academic freedom faces an existential crisis. The Trump administration, building on a movement that began in the states, is seeking ideological conquest of higher education. Some universities have already surrendered. Others fight on, facing an endless barrage of assaults on their institutional autonomy. Faculty too have chosen to resist, relying on their free expression rights. One of the most potent weapons in higher education’s arsenal is the constitutional academic freedom doctrine, a First Amendment protection that safeguards faculty’s academic expression and universities’ academic judgments. But the Supreme Court’s embrace of history and tradition as a focal point of its individual …

Task Sharing Of Tele-Mental Health Interventions In Primary Care: Formative Assessment Using Implementation Science, Frances Chu May 2026

Task Sharing Of Tele-Mental Health Interventions In Primary Care: Formative Assessment Using Implementation Science, Frances Chu

Dissertations

Primary care frequently cares for patients with mental health concerns. Tele-mental health (TMH) interventions are becoming used as alternatives to the traditional methods of mental health care delivery. However, implementation of these interventions has met with uneven implementation success. Task sharing is a care model that trains less specialized health care workers to perform tasks typically done by specialized health care workers. Few studies have examined the combination of Task sharing and TMH intervention for the management of mental conditions. This dissertation project utilized implementation science methodology for formative assessment of task sharing of TMH interventions. The goals of the …

Food insecurity and the at-home availability of vegetables and sugar-sweetened beverages both influence dietary intake. However, most research on food insecurity and the at-home availability of vegetables and sugar-sweetened beverages is cross-sectional, which is problematic as both change frequently. Therefore, this study assessed how changes in food insecurity were associated with changes in the at-home availability of vegetables and sugar-sweetened beverages among those in the intervention and control groups of TX Sprouts. Parents who participated in TX Sprouts, a gardening, cooking, and nutrition cluster-randomized trial conducted with primarily Hispanic, low-income 3rd-5th-grade students, completed surveys at baseline and at the nine-month …

Investigating The Moderating Roles Of Adolescent Peer Relationship Difficulties And Prosocial Behavior On The Relationship Between Triangulation And Adolescent Emotional Symptoms During Parental Divorce, Taylor Kalei Demotta May 2026

Investigating The Moderating Roles Of Adolescent Peer Relationship Difficulties And Prosocial Behavior On The Relationship Between Triangulation And Adolescent Emotional Symptoms During Parental Divorce, Taylor Kalei Demotta

Clinical Psychology Dissertations

The divorce process is a stressful, transitional period that is widely experienced by families in the United States. This process incites a variety of stressors and deleterious family dynamics that impact children and adolescents. The divorce literature has identified parental conflict as a significant contributor to youth outcomes following divorce. Therefore, researchers have aimed to investigate the specific dynamics occurring during interparental discord that may influence youth. Triangulation, or the involvement of children in parental disagreements, has been found to mediate the relationship between parental conflict and adolescents’ internalizing symptoms. Adolescents may be particularly vulnerable to triangulation due to increases …

Direct Democracy In The Twenty-First Century: Massachusetts Open Town Meeting And Citizen Participation, Daniel W. Santos

Graduate Doctoral Dissertations

Town Meeting is a unique system of democratic governance that can be found only in New England towns, where it has been the primary form of local government for nearly four centuries. Town Meeting is a type of direct democracy where laws, policy, and decisions are made by a plurality of a town’s eligible voters acting as its legislative body. There is limited scholarship addressing Town Meeting, with much of the extant literature focusing on the benefits of the direct democracy aspect of this form of government. Town Meeting has been generally known to be poorly attended by citizens. The …

The Persistence Of Mindfulness Training: Grit As An Indicator Of Student-Athletes’ Mental Health, Andrew J. Hylen May 2026

The Persistence Of Mindfulness Training: Grit As An Indicator Of Student-Athletes’ Mental Health, Andrew J. Hylen

Masters Projects

Finding ways for collegiate student-athletes to improve and manage mental health can boost persistence and retention rates athletically and academically (Credé et al., 2017; Mohebi et al., 2021). Providing mental health resources is not enough to support student-athletes because of mental health stigma and the fear of losing playing time from accepting help for physical or mental injury (Criticos et al., 2020; Sheffield & Stutts, 2020). Implementing sports team mindfulness-based mental health interventions for collegiate student-athletes can improve student-athletes’ overall well-being (Augustus et al., 2023; O’Brien & Kilrea, 2021). Additionally, utilizing grit theory as a predictive measure of one’s passion …

Department of Agricultural Economics Faculty Publications

Many topics in the behavioral sciences and epidemiology require researchers to directly observe entities (e.g., individuals, households) over a long time to identify lasting effects. Long-term panel data collection is more common in high-income countries than in small-scale rural societies (SSRS) of low-income countries. SSRS are mobile, nature-dependent, linguistic minorities, and highly autarkic. Analyzing such data using a life-course perspective can help uncover patterns that align or upend what we know from high-income countries. This study a) reviews long (>∼10 year) panels in SSRS (n = 9), b) extends the analysis to cover somewhat comparable societies of smallholders (n …

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Mitochondria–endoplasmic reticulum (ER) contact sites (MERCS) are nanoscopic, dynamic platforms integrating metabolism, signaling, and stress responses to regulate cell fate. These nanoscopic interfaces remodel continuously to meet the demands of proliferating, quiescent, and senescent cells. We synthesize evidence that MERCS actively coordinate local Ca2+ signaling, non-vesicular lipid transfer, and proteostasis to shape mitochondrial function and cellular homeostasis. We discuss how MERCS architecture changes across the cell cycle and during arrest, distinguishing adaptive from maladaptive remodeling, and consider therapeutic potential in aging and age-related disease.

Improving medication adherence in adolescents who had a liver transplant (iMALT), a prospective, block-randomized, single-blind, controlled multisite study in 13 pediatric transplant centers, used the medication level variability index (MLVI) to identify nonadherent adolescents. It compared a 2-year remote behavioral telemetric intervention (TI) that focused on adherence and addressed barriers to standard of care (SOC). The primary endpoint was the composite incidence of centrally determined (3 masked pathologists) rejection, death, retransplantation, or consent withdrawal. In 148 participants (TI group, n = 72 and the SOC group, n = 76), with a mean age 15.5 years, there were twice as many …

Intersectionality And Insurgent Citizenship: Women Of Color Feminism In 1970s New York City, Genevieve Bonner Davis

Dissertations and Theses

Not since the phrase "Ain't I a Woman" has African American women's intellectual leadership and insight been as visible and influential as the contemporary concept of intersectionality. Like Sojourner Truth's iconic intellectual intervention in the anti-slavery movement, intersectionality has experienced a similar trajectory of dissolution, distortion, appropriation, and popularization. Since its articulation by Black legal scholar Kimberlé Crenshaw in 1989, intersectionality theory has had a bumpy road to its buzzy, if controversial, status in the firmament of twenty-first-century political thought.

This thesis traces the origins of intersectionality theory through three distinct but intertwined phases. Phase one is the genealogy of …

Chronicles Of Despair And Hope: Food Wars On The Frontline Of Motherhood, Gemma M. Carney

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

In this paper I use first-person literary accounts of the hope and despair experienced by women when feeding infants and young children. In Soldier Sailor, Claire Kilroy offers a vivid depiction of attempts to get healthy and nutritious food into an evasive toddler. In her memoir, Making Babies: stumbling into motherhood, Anne Enright dedicates two whole pages to the word “haNang.” The word portrays endless crying of her breast-fed baby if she ate anything other than brown rice. These visceral depictions of mothers’ experiences of feeding children raise interesting questions for gastronomic studies. Some of our most treasured childhood food …

This paper explores the difference between daily eating habits (what is “eaten”) and handwritten recipe notebooks (what is “written”) within a Cretan-Turkish kinship network influenced by migration and resettlement. By combining oral history interviews with five women and analysing 242 notebook recipes, the study shows that these handwritten books are not just passive records of daily meals. Instead, they serve as selective domestic archives shaped by a “festive bias,” standardisation, and social value. The research indicates that while routine meals (such as stews) depend on embodied, unrecorded knowledge, the notebooks mainly contain special dough recipes using modern industrial ingredients like …

Crisis, Hope And The Headline: Agenda Setting In England’S Covid Food Story, Dayna Brackley

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

Panic buying during Covid was a crisis of perception as much as supply. This paper builds on the mixed method content analysis of 209 articles and accompanying images from six high circulation English newspapers, March to July 2020, setting it in the context of calls for civil food resilience and the UK national food strategy. The research shows how the press framed food access, responsibility and risk at a pivotal turning point. Sensationalised language appeared in 89% of articles, 68% carried negative sentiment, and 64% of analysed images showed empty shelves. Supermarkets were the dominant voice, quoted in 62% of …
