A Comparison Of Personality Types Between Deans/Directors Of Continuing Education And Chief Academic Officers In Selected Post-Secondary Institutions In North Carolina, Mary F. Joseph

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The problem was to determine whether significant relationships existed between the personality types of deans/directors of continuing education and chief academic officers in institutions of higher education in North Carolina. Literature was reviewed in order to determine the research that had been completed using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) with administrators in post-secondary institutions. A demographic questionnaire was developed to ascertain information about the type and size of the institutions, as well as data about the respondent. All post-secondary institutions, excluding business and trade schools, in North Carolina were included in the study. The dean/director of continuing education and chief …

A Comparison Of The Content Of Principal Evaluation Instruments (Tennessee), Paul E. Fox

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The problem of this study was to compare the content of principal evaluation instruments in use in Tennessee public school systems in terms of seven selected categories. The selected categories compared were (a) personal qualities, (b) professional skills and qualities, (c) human relations skills and qualities, (d) instructional leader skills and qualities, (e) manager skills and qualities, (f) decision-making skills, and (g) teaching skills. Of the 142 public school systems in Tennessee, 121 utilized a principal evaluation instrument consisting of either a checklist or rating scale. The evaluation instruments of these 121 systems were analyzed (using content analysis) for reference …

The Theory And Practice Of Misspelling : A Linguistic Analysis, Judy Frasch Worman Apr 1984

The Theory And Practice Of Misspelling : A Linguistic Analysis, Judy Frasch Worman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The freshmen at South Dakota State University are primarily students who have lived their entire lives in small agricultural communities. They are neither stupid nor unintelligent but merely inexperienced in writing formal exposition. Many of them come from towns with populations under one-thousand and high school graduating classes of twenty-five to fifty. Their primary means of communication (up until they enrolled in college) was through speech. Because they rarely write, they feel very uncomfortable about learning to write effectively. For the most part, these inexperienced writers are bright but unable to express themselves orthographically. There were some who, in spite …

A Critical Analysis Of Helen Keller's Socialist Speaking, Nancy J. Nelson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this inquiry was to determine. the effectiveness and the effect of the Socialistic rhetoric of Helen Keller as revealed in selected speeches on behalf of the Socialist movement. For purposes of this study it was necessary to define effectiveness and effect. Effectiveness refers to how well the rhetorical choices matched the established criteria. The effect is the immediate and long-range audience responses to· Keller's rhetoric. To accomplish the stated purpose, an attempt was made to answer the following questions: 1. What was the-historical background of the American Socialist Movement during the period in which these speeches were …

Rainbow Trout Cage Culture And Benthic Production In East-Central South Dakota Dugouts, Glenn David Schuler Jan 1984

Rainbow Trout Cage Culture And Benthic Production In East-Central South Dakota Dugouts, Glenn David Schuler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Forty-five cages, encompassing 1.0 m3 of water, distributed between three dugout ponds, were stocked with rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) fingerlings to determine the feasibility of raising annual fish crops. Growth rates were compared between feeding rate (0, 3, and 5% body weight/day [bwt/day]) and stocking rate (35, 52, and 70 fish/cage). Growth was significantly (P ≤0.05) greater at feeding rates of 3 and 5% bwt/day than 0% bwt/day. The fish fed 0% bwt/day decreased in mean weight by 0.7 g; the weight gain for the 3 and 5% bwt/day feeding rates were 47.2 and 45.2g, respectively. Significant differences (P ≤ …

Biological And Chemical Analysis Of Echinacea Pallida (Nutt.) Nutt. With Emphasis On The Insecticidal Component, Gregory A. Bame

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The genus Echinacea, family Asteraceae, contains several species of herbaceous, warm season perennials possessing varying amounts of biologically active materials. Echinacea is indigenous to the central or west-central U.S. and ranges from Texas and Alabama to Saskatchewan in Canada. McGregor recognizes 9 species and 2 varieties of Echinacea; the taxa of western distribution occurring in dry areas of prairie and grassland ecotype, those of more eastern distribution in dry, rocky, open woodlands, hillsides, or glades. All taxa are considered to be drought-tolerant, disease and pest-resistant plants of agriculturally marginal land. Morphological variation within this genus has led to much debate …

Love In Major Novels Of Carson Mccullers, Lynn Margaret Butterbrodt Jan 1984

Love In Major Novels Of Carson Mccullers, Lynn Margaret Butterbrodt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Mrs. McCullers was not a prolific writer; this was largely due to the fact that she was hindered throughout much of her life by serious illnesses. When she was fifteen, doctors misdiagnosed rheumatic fever as "pneumonia with complications.” Her heart was severely damaged by this illness; consequently, she suffered strokes which resulted in blindness in one eye, complete paralysis of her left side, and complications therefrom. Her final stroke in 1967 left her comatose for forty-seven days until her death on September 29, 1967, at age fifty. Her doctors believed that had her early illness been correctly diagnosed, her lifestyle …

Ability Of Klebsiella Pneumoniae To Fix Nitrogen Utilizing Selected Energy Sources, Theresa Helen Lemme Jan 1984

Ability Of Klebsiella Pneumoniae To Fix Nitrogen Utilizing Selected Energy Sources, Theresa Helen Lemme

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There are many nutrients in a farming operation which can limit production. Nitrogen deficiencies are found more often than any other. Crop yield increases needed to meet world population growth result in a greater demand for nitrogen. The commercial chemical manufacturer of fertilizer nitrogen by the Haber-Basch method is very energy intensive. Biological nitrogen fixation as an alternative source of nitrogen is now being extensively studied. The legume-rhizobium symbiosis has been well documented. This symbiosis has occurred for centuries yet the knowledge of its process and how it helps to decrease fertilizer nitrogen requirements was welcomed by the agricultural community. …

A Study Of The Effects Of Gender And Judging Experience In Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Charles Alan Lubbers Jan 1984

A Study Of The Effects Of Gender And Judging Experience In Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Charles Alan Lubbers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many people still recall the years when contestants in debate and individual events were divided into a "men's" and "women's" division. It is just in the last decade that some high school forensic tournaments in South Dakota have abolished this practice of segregation and have combined the two divisions into a single all-encompassing division. The original rationale for such a practice of separation is not immediately evident. Apparently, the tournament directors believed that one sex had an inherent advantage over the other in equal competition. One event that had not yet been initiated during this period of segregation was the …

S.I. Hayakawa And The Use Of Danger Indicators Of General Semantics, Janine Rae Rudnick Jan 1984

S.I. Hayakawa And The Use Of Danger Indicators Of General Semantics, Janine Rae Rudnick

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many books and articles have been written about general semantics and specific phrases included in general semantics study. The books generally have a theme of the meaning of words. Very few books or articles, however, have stressed the importance of J. Samuel Bois' danger indicators as part of the meaning of words. "Ego statements" 11 and "either or" 12 indicators have been touched upon in books and articles, but no one has dedicated significant study to the specific danger indicators as presented by Bois. It is this writer's belief that the danger indicators of general semantics should be studied more …

Patient Demand For Nursing Home Care, Kenneth Ray Spear Jan 1984

Patient Demand For Nursing Home Care, Kenneth Ray Spear

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A great deal of attention has been devoted in recent years to the rising costs of health care and to the resulting pressures upon private and public budgets. Likewise, much attention has been focused on the economic well-being of the increasing number of older citizens. Surprisingly, the tools of economics have been infrequently applied to the nursing home industry, which is a growing segment of the health care sector that now provides services to over one million elderly persons annually (U.S., Department of Health and Human Services, 1981). Since economics is concerned with scarce resources and their efficient allocation among …

Sun Yat-Sen's Inductive Support And Deductive Reasoning In Selected "Three Principles Of The People" Speeches, Chen-Lung Ringo Ma Jan 1984

Sun Yat-Sen's Inductive Support And Deductive Reasoning In Selected "Three Principles Of The People" Speeches, Chen-Lung Ringo Ma

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the extensiveness and the effectiveness of inductive support and deductive reasoning revealed in selected "Three Principles of the People" speeches made by Dr. Sun Yat-sen in 1924. Extensiveness, in this study, was mainly concerned with quantitative measurement how much inductive support and deductive reasoning had been employed within each selected speech. Effectiveness, on the other hand, called for a qualitative judgment--how well or how effectively the inductive support and the deductive reasoning within the speeches had matched the established criteria. To accomplish the purpose stated above, answers to the following questions were …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to do a comparative study of two books by two men who are interested in the mountain man and his period in American history. Frederick Manfred and A. B. Guthrie Jr., authors of Lord Grizzly and The Big Sky, have a deep love for the American West. Their books are about America's frontier and the dreams of the mountain men who first explored it. The mountain men's dreams were of freedom from civilization, excitement in discovery, and love for the vast sea of plains and soaring grandeur of mountains. The spirit of the wild …

A Market Research Study For A South Dakota Weekly Newspaper The Mobridge Tribune, Jan Laughlin Jan 1984

A Market Research Study For A South Dakota Weekly Newspaper The Mobridge Tribune, Jan Laughlin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis attempts to solve the dilemma by presenting a model for an in-house market research study for a weekly newspaper that cannot afford an outside research firm. The following study was developed for one weekly newspaper, the Mobridge Tribune, Mobridge, South Dakota. One area in which newspaper market research can gather information is media competition. This is particularly important with the diversity in media apparent today. Where once the newspaper was the only business on main street, there are now other print competitors like marriage mail, direct mail, shoppers, circulars and suburban editions. The traditional electronic media are additional …

Effects Of Dietary Dehydroepiandrosterone (Dhea) On Body Weight, Food Consumption, And Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase (G6phd) Activity In Lethal Yellow (Ay/Aw) And White-Bellied Agouti (Aw/Aw) Mice (Strain 129/Sv), Lisa Deette Staber Jan 1984

Effects Of Dietary Dehydroepiandrosterone (Dhea) On Body Weight, Food Consumption, And Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase (G6phd) Activity In Lethal Yellow (Ay/Aw) And White-Bellied Agouti (Aw/Aw) Mice (Strain 129/Sv), Lisa Deette Staber

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is a non-competitive inhibitor in vitro of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH), the rate controlling enzyme in the pentose-phosphate shunt. This pathway produces NADPH, a necessary co-factor for the synthesis of fatty acids and ribo- and deoxyribonucleotides. Some researchers believe that by decreasing G6PDH activity, DHEA produces an anti-obesity and anticarcinogenic effect in laboratory mice and rats genetically inclined toward obesity and cancer. It is DHEA's anti-obesity effect which lends it to the study of the yellow obese (AY/-) mouse with its peculiar pleiotropic syndrome. Yellow obese AY/AW mice were found to be more susceptible to dietary DHEA's effects than …

Egypt's Image In The American Media : A Content Analysis Of The New York Times' Coverage Of Egypt, Mahmoud Abd Elraouf Kamel Jan 1984

Egypt's Image In The American Media : A Content Analysis Of The New York Times' Coverage Of Egypt, Mahmoud Abd Elraouf Kamel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It seems to the unfamiliar with the Arab world that all Arab countries are the same. The Arab countries speak the same language, Arabic; have the same dominant religion, Islam; share the same geographical boundaries; have the same cultural and historical backgrounds; and share the same future as developing countries. The American media, and probably European media, are used, in many cases, to stereotype the Arab countries as one whole. Nevertheless, the Arab countries vary one from another in many characteristics such as natural resources, kind of rule, literacy rate and population density and growth. Egypt is one of these …
