A Chemical And Morphological Study Of Grindelia Squarrosa (Pursh) Dunal, Marcus A. Chase
A Chemical And Morphological Study Of Grindelia Squarrosa (Pursh) Dunal, Marcus A. Chase
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A species of Grindelia known as Gum, Rosin or Tar weed, is of common occurrence on dry banks and sandy soils in various parts of South Dakota. During day seasons it attains such a dense growth in closely cropped pastures that horses feeding in them have their heads and manes covered with a black tarry-like substance, and their fetlocks collects fairly large ball of this tarry mass. In dry years the development of the weed is so rapid that the grass in a closely cropped pasture may be nearly exterminated during a single season. A pasture may seem to be …
The Effect Of Endocrines Upon Animal Behavior., J. Hubert Geyer
The Effect Of Endocrines Upon Animal Behavior., J. Hubert Geyer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
It is not the primary purpose of this present work to treat the problem of the evolution of behavior, but rather to give an analysis of animal behavior as observed. These observations may appear as simple tests, but they make possible a new way to measure the capacity and determine the rate of learning by the animal mind. Progress in learning takes place through increased variety and precision of the movements brought about by stimulation and is very clearly observed in Amoeba, where we find the production of varied movements and the resolution of one physiological state into another. Thus …
George Meredith's Ideas Of Religion., Mary Ellis Duncan
George Meredith's Ideas Of Religion., Mary Ellis Duncan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Every man is to a greater or less degree a product of the influences surrounding his life. The more commonplace minds of the race, no doubt, are chiefly affected; and occasionally we find a man or woman of so keen an intellect, so striking an individuality, that it is difficult to trace the influence of his age upon him. Rather he becomes a power in forming the opinions of the next generation, stands in advance of his own period. Of this individualistic type if George Meredith, one of the greatest of the nineteenth century writers, if not foremost among them.
History Of The Churches Of Louisville With Special Reference To Slavery., Homer E. Wickenden
History Of The Churches Of Louisville With Special Reference To Slavery., Homer E. Wickenden
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In the one hundred and forty years of Louisville's existence, it has grown from a log cabin settlement with no churches to a city with 269 churches and church property valued at over $30,000,000. It is impossible to measure the moral and religious force that they have exerted on the city. It can best be appreciated when one thinks of what the city would be without them. Few of us would care to live in such a city. In the field of education, Louisville churches have contributed much. Some of the first schools in the city were conducted by ministers, …
The Relation Between Man And Nature In Wordsworth's Poetry., Elizabeth Hoskins
The Relation Between Man And Nature In Wordsworth's Poetry., Elizabeth Hoskins
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
While democracy was developing, while men were seeking to reform national politics and to find some means by which the people might be represented justly in the government, a new movement entered into literature to give it a broadened scope and a deepened meaning. This was the philosophical movement, at times strongly influenced by a metaphysical spirit, which often "not only prescribed the form of poetry, but furnished it with its elements". (Taine, History of English Literature, p.87). The questions, What is the meaning of life? What is man, and what is his purpose in the world? turned the thoughts …
Cooperative Marketing Of Farm Products In South Dakota, Wendell Frichiof Kumlien
Cooperative Marketing Of Farm Products In South Dakota, Wendell Frichiof Kumlien
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: General Facts Underlying the Whole Problem of Distribution and Marketing of Farm Products Before entering into a detailed discussion of cooperative marketing of farm products as applied to South Dakota, I wish to briefly mention a few general historical facts which in a large part go to make up the background for the whole present day problem of distribution and marketing. 1. Pioneer America’s Agricultural Problems Mainly Those of Production During the period when our country was predominately agricultural, each farm produced practically everything it needed and was in the main self-sufficing. Each farmer produced his own wheat and …
Early Kentucky Intrigues Regarding The Mississippi River., Henri Reubelt Pearcy 1894-1987
Early Kentucky Intrigues Regarding The Mississippi River., Henri Reubelt Pearcy 1894-1987
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This paper is involved in a study of the intrigues of Kentuckians for the securing of the Mississippi River as a free waterway for the marketing of their produce and the consequent improvement of the condition of Kentuckians in every way. The conspiracies of such men as Blount and Burr have not been included because there was no real and vital connection of Kentuckians with their schemes. The intrigues of Wilkinson after the Spanish treating of 1795 were not involving Kentucky peculiarly but rather the Southwest, and they would not be properly included here. Evidence of complicity in intrigues on …
The Indians And The Agriculture Of Crow Creek Indian Reservation, Thomas J. Jackson
The Indians And The Agriculture Of Crow Creek Indian Reservation, Thomas J. Jackson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Crow Creek Indian Reservation is located in South Dakota, bordering the east side of the Missouri River, about forty miles below Pierre, the Capital. In fact, a part of Hughes county lies in the Big Bend District of the reservation, and the south end of Hyde County and the west end of Buffalo County make up the rest of it - in all 313,304,23 acres or 489.5 square miles - about 13.5 townships. Parallel 44° North Latitude cuts the southern part of the Reservation, while meridian 99° West Longitude is just east of it. The nearest rail road point …
Some Aspects Of The Philosophy Of Joseph Conrad., Minnie Lee Dodd Hill 1886-1959
Some Aspects Of The Philosophy Of Joseph Conrad., Minnie Lee Dodd Hill 1886-1959
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A man's philosophy is his view of life. And every man who has lived his life – not merely spent it – has a philosophy. The convictions which go to make up this philosophy are rooted in the sub-soil of his experience. This sub-soil may contain ingredients carried up to him from the past of his race, of his nation, of his ancestors. His insight into his environment is not merely the view of a detached individual. The sad and gloomy experiences of Conrad's parents (banished to Vologda for taking part in Polish rebellion 1862) probably started in his child …
A Study Of The Wheat Market, William J. A. Schoppe
A Study Of The Wheat Market, William J. A. Schoppe
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The most prominent food grain of the Caucasian race is wheat. It is an important crop in almost every country under their domination, and, perhaps, has a wider habitat than any other prominent product of the soil. Under diverse climates, differing soils, and varied development of agricultural methods, it is an important resource in almost every portion of the globe. It forms a large item in the foreign trade of every commercial nation, and either in the form of grain or flour appears in the trade of even the most obscure country. The present discussion has for its purpose, first, …
