Aflatoxicosis In Poultry, John G. Gregoriades
Aflatoxicosis In Poultry, John G. Gregoriades
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The term "aflatoxicosis" is applied to the toxicosis which is produced by "aflatoxin", a poisonous metabolite produced by certain strains of Aspergillus flavus. This toxin is a part of a series of toxins produced by fungi, which may be ingested by livestock, poultry and humans to produce toxigenic effects--the so-called mycotoxicoses. The occurrence of mycotoxicoses are frequent enough considering the prevalence of fungi and their proliferation in nature. They develop under favorable environmental conditions in foods and feeds of plant origin before and after harvest.

Dried Whey, Fish Solubles In Growing-Finishing Swine Rations And Effects Of Distillers Dried Grains With Solubles On Ration Digestibility, Craig S. German
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Many workers have suggested the possibility of an unidentified growth factor (s) in certain feed ingredients. Feeding trials conducted to determine the effect of unidentified growth factor sources on growth rates have produced inconsistent results. One of the biggest problems has been the isolation and identification of the compound responsible for the growth stimulus often obtained when unidentified growth factor sources are fed. Empirical fractionations have been done with some unidentified growth factor sources. Growth stimulation has been reported with various fractions extracted with different organic solvents, with a water extract as well as the ash of growth factor sources. …
Variation Between Boars In Semen Characteristics And Fertility, Wayne L. Singleton
Variation Between Boars In Semen Characteristics And Fertility, Wayne L. Singleton
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The most important factor influencing the income from a livestock breeding herd is the number of offspring produced per female per year. This number varies between herds and species and is influenced by such factors as disease, nutrition, genetics, management, climate, and endocrine balance. It has been estimated that over 30% of the potential offspring from the sow are lost between ovulation and the thirtieth day of pregnancy. It would be of great economic value to reduce this loss both in terms of increased number of offspring per pregnancy and increased number of offspring per year. The sow has long …

Feedlot Adaptation And Shrinkage Of Feeder Cattle, Robert E. Revell
Feedlot Adaptation And Shrinkage Of Feeder Cattle, Robert E. Revell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In the past 10 to 20 years the cattle feeding industry has undergone many changes. A number of changes in environmental factors and management practices have created problems in the adaptation of newly arrived cattle to their new environment. Major problems are the high incidence of diseases resulting in extensive treatments, slow gaining cattle during the early stages in the feedlot, and costly death losses. All result in narrowed profit margins. Cattle are being sent to feedlots at an earlier age. The practice of holding cattle until they are mature or selling them as grass-fats has declined. Feedlot operators want …

A Study Of Resource Allocation On Farms Engaged In Swine Production In Southeastern South Dakota, Robert Lincoln Borgers
A Study Of Resource Allocation On Farms Engaged In Swine Production In Southeastern South Dakota, Robert Lincoln Borgers
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study was undertaken to compare alternative livestock programs on southeastern South Dakota farms. Variations in hog production have been emphasized since swine feeding accounts for much of the income generated within the community. In addition to the amount of income, stability of income, risk, capital and labor requirements have been compared as limiting factors to be seriously considered. Diminishing numbers of farmers and new pork production methods have caused remaining farmers and new pork production methods have caused remaining farmers to reassess use of scarce inputs and new means of successful swine raising. Some questions which arise in the …

Snapping Turtle Life History On Lacreek Refuge, South Dakota, Donald Arthur Hammer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Investigations of the snapping turtle population on Lacreek National Wildlife Refuge in south-central South Dakota were conducted during 1965-67. Turtles captured by trapping, “hooking”, boxing nests and catching nesting females were measured, marked and released. Turtles were marked by toe-clipping, routing, flagging, and tagging. Attaching a metal tag with a “pop-rivet gun” was the most successful marking technique. Molluscs (95 percent frequency) and vegetation (91 percent frequency) were the most important food items of 22 turtles captured on Valentine Refuge in north-central Nebraska. Bird remains were found in 23 percent of the stomachs. Recapture of marked turtles indicated that individual …
Life History And Ecology Of The Black-Footed Ferret In The Wild, Conrad N. Hillman
Life History And Ecology Of The Black-Footed Ferret In The Wild, Conrad N. Hillman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Twenty-one black-footed ferrets (Mustela nigripes) were observed at six different locations in southwest South Dakota between April 1966, and September 1967. All observations were made on black-tailed prairie-dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) towns from 15 to 100 acres in size. Because of the proximity of towns inhabited by ferrets, it was possible that individual animals were observed in more than one location. Three litters of ferrets were studied. Young ferrets were most active during early morning and late evening hours. Ferrets remained as a group until early fall when dispersal evidently occurred. Young ferrets accepted live-tethered and dead prairie dogs, mice, cottontails …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Summer food preferences were determined for 48 adult sharp-tailed grouse (Pedioecetes phasianellus jamesi) in a mixed grass habitat. Seasonal foods were determined for 659 sharptails and prairie chickens (Tympanuchus cupido pinnatus). Vegetation analysis of four selected study areas indicated significant differences (P<.05) in grassland and brushy draw habitats. Of plant food items, cultivated crops were first in importance on the basis of crop analysis by volumetric comparison for summer, fall, and winter for prairie grouse. Common dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) ranked first (72.2 percent) in importance by volume for 63 sharptai8ls during spring. Short-horned grasshoppers (Acrididas) were the most important insect item by volume for summer, fall, and winter. Preference indices for food items taken by 48 adult sharp-tailed grouse during summer indicated selectivity for rose (Rosa arkansana) hips, wolfberry (Symmphoricarpos occidentalis) fruits, clovers (Trifolium spp.), and prickly lettuce (Lactuca Serriola) flower heads. Cultivated crop were fifth in important based on the food-preference index. Short-horned grasshoppers were consumed in approximate proportion to their availability.
