Ecological And Trophic Distribution Of Pesticides In Lack Poinsett, South Dakota, Michael Robert Hannon
Ecological And Trophic Distribution Of Pesticides In Lack Poinsett, South Dakota, Michael Robert Hannon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Ecological and trophic distributions of chlorinated hydrocarbon residues in Lake Poinsett, South Dakota were studies. Components of the ecosystem analyzed were water, bottom sediment, zooplankton, benthic algae, crayfish, aquatic insects and fish. Concentrations of aldrin, DDD, DDE, DDT, dieldrin, endrin, heptachlor, heptachlor epoxide, lindane, methoxychlor, and toxaphene were determined by gas chromatography and thin-layer chromatography. DDT and its metabolites, DDD and DDE, were the highest residues detected in all trophic levels examined. Heptachlor, heptachlor epoxide, aldrine, dieldrin, and lindane were present in the majority of sample types, while neither endrin nor methoxyshlor was detected above analytical confidence limits in any …

Some Indications Of The Reinforcement Effects Of Cooperative Extension Programs Broadcast From Kota-Tv, Rapid City, South Dakota, A Commercial Television Station, Francis Elizabeth Maierhauser
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study was undertaken in an attempt to determine to what extent commercial television--an example of mass communication—acts as a contributory agent in the process of reinforcing existing learning experiences, and in an attempt to isolate some of the other factors that may act as mediating influences to reinforcing effects. The subjects of this research consisted of' members or the Extension Clubs in Meade County, South Dakota. A second audience of the same approximate size of non-members of Extension Clubs in the same county was used as a control group for purposes of comparison. This problem was chosen for study …

Guidelines For Estimating Resources Needed To Earn A Specified Level Of Income, South James Area, South Dakota, John N. Maher
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
An economic problem confronting farmers of the South James Area in South Dakota involves the allocation and use of resources in the best combination to earn specified levels of income. How to develop guidelines for estimating the combination of resources needed to earn a specified level of income with a given set of prices and levels of high and average mechanization is the problem with which this study is concerned. Its purpose is to determine combinations of agricultural resources and enterprises required to obtain specified levels of farm income in the South James Area of South Dakota. Many farmers are …
The Supplementation Of Lysine To Growing And Finishing Swine, Roger D. Magstadt
The Supplementation Of Lysine To Growing And Finishing Swine, Roger D. Magstadt
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In the United States the swine industry contributes a great deal to the economy of the corn-belt farmer. On June 1, 1967, the U.S.D.A. Statistical Reporting Service reported 43,642,000 swine in the ten Corn Belt States, which produce three-fourths of the United States pig crop. South Dakota produced approximately 2,700,000 hogs in 1966 with a value of 137.5 million dollars, which is approximately 18.1% of the total farm income. In recent years the trend toward producing a fast-growing, efficient and meaty hog has necessitated that the nutritional regimen be changed to help express the hereditary potential of the modern meat …

The Analyses: The prime objectives of the analyses are twofold. First, to extract those statements and ideas of the texts, within the subject being analyzed, which will give the reader a fundamental insight into the principal propositions and contentions of the authors concerning the subjects being analyzed. The second principal objective of the analyses is to provide the reader with a sufficient amount of the author’s ideas and principles on the specific subjects in the analyses, so that the reader can make comparisons regarding different authors treatment of similar material, within the same school of acting. The Syntheses: Based on …
Synthesis Of Deoxy-Glucosamine As A Possible Antibacterial Agent, Theodore Allen Westley
Synthesis Of Deoxy-Glucosamine As A Possible Antibacterial Agent, Theodore Allen Westley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
An antibacterial agent is a substance which destroys or suppresses bacterial growth or reproduction. The discovery of the antibacterial properties of the sulfonamides in 1935 by Gerhard Domagk began one of the brightest eras in modern anti-bacterial chemotherapy. These drugs have remained useful as antibacterial agents but the introduction of the antibiotics, particularly penicillin, has made the sulfonamides less popular. However, the sulfonamides are effective and are still used today. Antibacterial agents are not characterized by one chemical grouping or a particular mode of action. Phenols and alcohols, for example, act by denaturing protein. Others such as arsenic and the …
Antigenic Relationships Of Diptheroids Isolated From Cattle And Swine, Glenn Elwyn Urevig
Antigenic Relationships Of Diptheroids Isolated From Cattle And Swine, Glenn Elwyn Urevig
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Gram positive, club shaped, pleomorphic bacilli with or without catalase activity are frequently isolated from abscessed clinical materials (Smith and Bodily, 1968). These organisms may be aerobic to microaerophilic to anaerobic (Wilson and Miles, 1964) and are usually regarded as Diphtheroids. Diphtheroids have been defined by Burdon (1958) as members of the genus Corynebacterium other than the diphtheria bacillus Burrows et al . (1963) state that diphtheroids are "microorganisms morphologically similar to and frequently indistinguishable from the diphtheria bacillus." Biever (1967) included as diphtheroid all of the organisms morphologically similar to the genus Actinomyces. Smith et al . (1964) stated …
Factors Affecting The Seasonality Of Marketing Manufacturing Milk In Eastern South Dakota, Larry Gene Traub
Factors Affecting The Seasonality Of Marketing Manufacturing Milk In Eastern South Dakota, Larry Gene Traub
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The problems involved in the marketing of milk are numerous and often complex. One problem facing both the South Dakota producer and processor is the seasonality in production and marketing of manufacturing milk. This has been a problem of long standing in the dairy industry. The fluid milk industry has made some progress in bringing about a more even flow of milk to the market through the various price incentive programs. Seasonal pricing has played a leading role. Little has been done, however, to alleviate the problem in the manufactured milk segment of the industry. . . . The specific …
Isolation And Characterization Of Fecal Streptococci From Surface Waters In South Dakota, Jerome Edward Tiede
Isolation And Characterization Of Fecal Streptococci From Surface Waters In South Dakota, Jerome Edward Tiede
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Organisms referred to as "fecal streptococci" or "enterococci" have been studied as possible indicators of pathogenic bacteria of fecal origin since their· discovery. In Bergey's Manual of Determinative Bacteriology (1957), the "enterococci" are classified as Streptococcus faecalis, Streptococcus faecalis var. liquefaciens, Streptococcus faecalis var. zyrnogenes and Streptococcus durans. Streptococcus bovis and Streptococcus equinus do not meet all the criteria of the enterococcus group. However, they are found in great numbers in certain fecal material. These organisms, and the”enterococci" are collectively referred to as "fecal streptococci." The unavailability of satisfactory methods and of selective media has prevented the acceptance of these …
Effects Of Supplemental Lysine In The Drinking Water Of Growing And Finishing Swine, Aaron R. Taylor
Effects Of Supplemental Lysine In The Drinking Water Of Growing And Finishing Swine, Aaron R. Taylor
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Proteins are defined as organic compounds formed as polymers of amino acids. The structural characteristics of the individual proteins enable them to act as catalysts (enzymes) and thus control the rate of all biological reactions, to serve as carriers for biologically important substances in the organism, to regulate physiological relationships as hormones, and to serve as structural components for subcellular, cellular and other organic substances. Previous research has indicated that for optimum utilization of amino acids to occur the required amino acids must be present at the site where synthesis of the organic substances takes place. These required amino acids …
