Method And System For Anomaly Detection In Large-Scale Networks, Fang Chen, John Garrett, Dave Zacks, Vladimir Yashin Jul 2020

Method And System For Anomaly Detection In Large-Scale Networks, Fang Chen, John Garrett, Dave Zacks, Vladimir Yashin

Defensive Publications Series

Effectively spotting anomalies in network or application operations can be challenging in very large, complex networks, making it difficult to be alerted to their presence in order to take action to remediate such anomalies. Proper anomaly detection is impeded by too much data from too many disparate sources, which may manifest in too many different ways on various network devices ("the curse of dimensionality" familiar to many machine learning (ML) practitioners).

Proposed herein is a novel implementation of a Long Short-Term Memory based Variational Autoencoder (LSTM-VAE) to detect such anomalies, and an associated visualization technique to display them to the …

High-Performance Low-Overhead Stochastic Wear Leveling Of Flash Memory By Comparing Age Of A Block With Age Of A Randomly Selected Block, Chris Phoenix Jul 2020

High-Performance Low-Overhead Stochastic Wear Leveling Of Flash Memory By Comparing Age Of A Block With Age Of A Randomly Selected Block, Chris Phoenix

Defensive Publications Series

This publication describes systems and techniques to implement a stochastic-based wear leveling scheme for block erasures to extend the usable life of flash memory and other types of electrically erasable programmable read-only memory (EEPROM). Some existing approaches for wear leveling are resource intensive and may be merged with a file system that also attempts to distribute write operations, which impacts both the write distribution and the erasure wear leveling. In contrast, described systems and techniques can be implemented separately from file system routines, including at the hardware level. Initially, a block of a memory is identified for erasure. The erasure …

Using Audio Processing To Determine Disease Spread, Ajit Narayanan Jul 2020

Using Audio Processing To Determine Disease Spread, Ajit Narayanan

Defensive Publications Series

During epidemics and at other times, it is important for public health officials, individuals, and other entities to make health-related decisions based on sound epidemiological statistics. Such statistics are today generated only when individuals voluntarily seek medical treatment. Diseases that are contagious but initially asymptomatic can spread rapidly through vulnerable populations with little warning. Due to the initial mildness of symptoms, individuals may not realize that they have a dangerous infection and may fail to approach medical professionals for treatment or diagnosis.

This disclosure describes techniques that can leverage sensors, networks, and consumer electronic devices to determine a fine-grained estimate …

Limited Authentication Credentials Through Cryptocurrency, Rob Smits, John Wood Jul 2020

Limited Authentication Credentials Through Cryptocurrency, Rob Smits, John Wood

Defensive Publications Series

A certification authority can issue a certificate to a computing system in a peer network peer computing system. A number of cryptographic coins can be associated with the certificate. The number of cryptographic coins can be recorded by the certifying process (represented in the certificate itself) and stored in a ledger (or log) kept by each computing system in the network. Each cryptographic coin can be distinct such that it can be used (e.g., spent) in a single authentication process and cannot be reused. Thus, when a first computing system wants to communicate with a second computing system in the …

Method To Identify Change Based On Content-Based Embedding, Luca Chiarandini, Joe Hung Jul 2020

Method To Identify Change Based On Content-Based Embedding, Luca Chiarandini, Joe Hung

Defensive Publications Series

A method for identifying change based on content-based embedding is disclosed. The proposed method computes content similarity of content items uploaded to a user’s personal channel. The method then computes a channel risk score, which identifies whether the type(s) of content uploaded to a user’s personal channel has changed after a specific point in time. A channel in which the type(s) of content has changed after a specific point in time, for example after the channel was reviewed for a monetization program, may indicate potential abuse of the monetization program. Based on the risk score, the method may flag potentially …
