Bombs Away: Visual Thinking And Students’ Engagement In Design Studios Contexts, Marianella Chamorro-Koc, Andrew Scott, Gretchen Coombs
DRS Biennial Conference Series
In design studio, sketching or visual thinking is part of processes that assist students to achieve final design solutions. At QUT’s First and Third Year industrial design studio classes we engage in a variety of teaching pedagogies from which we identify ‘Concept Bombs’ as an instrumental in the development of students’ visual thinking and reflective design process, and also as a vehicle to foster positive student engagement. Our ‘formula’: Concept Bombs are 20 minute design tasks focusing on rapid development of initial concept designs and free-hand sketching. Our experience and surveys tell us that students value intensive studio activities especially …
Design Vs. The Design Industry, Joanna Boehnert
Design Vs. The Design Industry, Joanna Boehnert
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Sustainable design; systems; epistemology; environment crisis; capitalismDesign can be understood as a practice that evolves as new cognitive and perceptual capacities enable a greater understanding of complexity, context and system dynamics. These emergent capacities create greater potential for social and technological innovation. This paper will argue that despite emergent skills, designers are not able to effectively address contemporary problems in a sustainable manner due to the systemic priorities of the design industry. This paper theorises “design” as the professional practice of creating new products, buildings, services and communication as a broader practice than the work that is produced within the …
Reflective Methods In Design Pedagogy, Jillian Coorey
Reflective Methods In Design Pedagogy, Jillian Coorey
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This study proposes reflection as a pedagogical approach in design education. Design students lack of process was noticed as they struggled with basic ideation and exploration. To more effectively communicate the notion of process, reflective methods were introduced within the design studio. Reflection enhances learning and productiveness, vital goals of the education process (Russell, 2001). Jack Mezirow, an educator and researcher made the following statement about critical reflection, “reflection may enable individuals to change their habits of expectation and, as a result, develop more accurate perceptions, avoid premature cognitive commitments, and achieve greater flexibility and creativity” (1991). This paper presents …

Engagement While Reading Manga: Measuring Indonesian Readers’ Immersion Within Manga’S Universe, Hafiz Aziz Ahmad, Haruo Hibino, Shinichi Koyama
DRS Biennial Conference Series
The introduction of Japanese manga to Indonesia has triggered a big impact toward the community, a proof of a successful intercultural reception. The widely reception of manga showed manga enormous capability in attracting the attention of Indonesian readers, which came from a different cultural background. Previous studies on manga (Schodt, 1983; McCloud, 1993 and 2006; Natsume, 2010) suggested that manga’s advantages specifically lay on its visual ability in putting the readers inside its universe or immersion, which is referred as narrative engagement (Busselle and Bilandzic, 2009), identification (Cohen, 2001), or experiencing the story (Jones, 2008). Immersion here referred to the …

Authentic Learning Practices: International Design Project, Erik Bohemia, Gillian Davison
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Higher Education is experiencing an increasingly diverse student population. Students bring a range of skills and experiences to their courses; they have different backgrounds and different needs. This fluidity requires an approach to teaching that encompasses the social aspects of learning. It has been suggested that authentic approaches to teaching and learning can assist in offering a perspective on learning which views learning as ‘enabling participation in knowing’. We propose that the authentic learning practices developed in The Gift design project, discussed in this paper, constituted approaches which acknowledged that students’ interests and experience are intrinsically bound up with motivation …
Reflecting On The Future Of Design Education In 21st Century India: Towards A Paradigm Shift In Design Foundation, Indrani De Parker
Reflecting On The Future Of Design Education In 21st Century India: Towards A Paradigm Shift In Design Foundation, Indrani De Parker
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Design Fundamentals or Basic Design, as it was referred to in early design education has come a long way since its origins at Bauhaus and its further evolution at Ulm. In the nascent period of industrial design, the work primarily focused on physical products. Today, however, designers need to deal with complex issues. 21st century design education needs to be able to design and develop strategies for all and not just look at ‘Good Form’. There is a visible shift from client-driven projects towards a more reflective ‘Issue Based’ design education that strives for more socially inclusive, locally/glocally/globally relevant solutions …

Designer As Author Activist: A Model For Engagement, Steven Mccarthy
Designer As Author Activist: A Model For Engagement, Steven Mccarthy
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Public discourse has long been enlivened by graphic designers who harness their creative skills and ideas to political, social and cultural issues. Iconic examples populate the canon of American graphic design history over the past century: designs for the Works Progress Administration in the 1930s and ’40s, Lorriane Schneider’s 1967 poster “War Is Not Healthy for Children and Other Living Things,” Gran Fury’s AIDS awareness campaigns during the 1980s, and carrying the concept into the new millennium, Shepard Fairey’s recent “Obama Hope” posters. However, historical emphasis has often been on the individual design artifact, with secondary consideration of the contextual …
On Drawing In Mass Media Contexts, Mario Minichiello
On Drawing In Mass Media Contexts, Mario Minichiello
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper discusses the role of the author’s drawing practice as applied to mass-mediated contexts. That is, the use of drawn imagery as a paradigm of analysis and expression of ideas published in various print and screen media. It seeks to explain the rationale for both the author’s individual, and editorially collaborative decision-making through the methodological framework of an Action Research model. In each case this is a ‘reflective’ process, which also helps examine how the images were developed in response to problem solving. The paper includes Action Research reflection on data collected in collaboration with filmmaker Solon Papadopoulos about …
Design Process And Organisational Strategy: A Storytelling Perspective, David Parkinson, Erik Bohemia, Joyce Yee, Neil Smith
Design Process And Organisational Strategy: A Storytelling Perspective, David Parkinson, Erik Bohemia, Joyce Yee, Neil Smith
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper explores the relationship between design process and organisational strategy through a storytelling perspective by providing a literature review; firstly, in relation to society in general; establishing a contextual background to the research. Secondly, by relating this to a) how designers and design researchers examine storytelling within design process, and b) how organisational strategists theorise storytelling. Then finally, through comparing and contrasting the literature, unearth the relevancies of using a storytelling perspective and uncover opportunities for understanding how design process impacts organisational strategy. It is apparent that certain underlying principles in adopting a storytelling perspective when employing organisational strategy …
Mobile Marketplace Designing Digital Devices To Connect Rural & Urban China, Francesca Valsecchi, Serena Pollastri, Yongqi Lou, Diego Dalia
Mobile Marketplace Designing Digital Devices To Connect Rural & Urban China, Francesca Valsecchi, Serena Pollastri, Yongqi Lou, Diego Dalia
DRS Biennial Conference Series
The paper describes the methodology and process of an ongoing research project, conducted by Studio TAO and Tongji University with Nokia, to demonstrate how digital communication devices can help bridge the social gap between rural and urban China. Rapid growth, substantial socio-economic changes, and massive migration from the countryside to the urban areas, are creating an imbalance in the urban-rural system. No visible value is given to activities and resources related to the countryside. Young people move to urban areas to find a job to economically sustain their families; social fabric is weakening and traditional practices and local skills are …
Stillness As A Competence Of Design Intelligence, Fernando Rojas, Nicholas Spencer, Stuart English
Stillness As A Competence Of Design Intelligence, Fernando Rojas, Nicholas Spencer, Stuart English
DRS Biennial Conference Series
According to Cross (2006), designing can be viewed as a form of intelligence so that its competences can be identified, clarified and cultivated. This paper reviews and extends existing design literature by refining the language that describes design-intelligence and the identification, clarification and cultivation of design-intelligence competences. This document also reports on an initial study that used an Enhanced Reflective Practice Reporting Template within the context of professional practice to highlight: a) the value of improving a designer’s professional inner self-awareness through reflective practice enhanced with non-analytical mental training techniques, and b) that such processes can aid access to a …
Typography Matters When Designing Onscreen Reading Materials For Dyslexic Learners, Myra Thiessen
Typography Matters When Designing Onscreen Reading Materials For Dyslexic Learners, Myra Thiessen
DRS Biennial Conference Series
With the digital technology that is now available for e-readers an opportunity is presented for tremendous advances to be made in how learning materials are designed for children with dyslexia. Because users have the flexibility to customize presentations the learning materials that are developed for digital reading devises have the potential to be more effective than those generated in more traditional print formats. Previous research has shown that differences do exist in the way that readers interact with content that is presented onscreen as opposed to that in print formats; however, we know relatively little about these differences and as …

A Pilot Study To Investigate The Disconnection Between Researched Theory And Creative Practice In Visual Communication Research Projects, Jesvin Puayhwa Yeo
A Pilot Study To Investigate The Disconnection Between Researched Theory And Creative Practice In Visual Communication Research Projects, Jesvin Puayhwa Yeo
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Research will play an important role in art and design education as the number of art and design research degree student increases. Yet ‘the relationship between creativepractical work and research protocols still remains a contentious issue’ stated Hockey. The missing link between researched theory and creative practice has been unable to develop the depth and relevance of students’ creative practice. From the perspective of Asian undergraduate studies, this paper seeks to explore students’ abilities and knowledge of research methodologies. This paper is not proposing a method or a solution to bridge the disconnection between researched theory and creative practice. But …
Learning From Media Studies Theory And Design Practice: Using The Interpretive Nature Of Film Media For The Communication Of Tacit Knowledge In Design Research, Tom Barker
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper investigates the interpretive nature of film media as a format for tacit knowledge communication in design research. Film is already utilised in this capacity for documentaries and fictional films and the theory of tacit communication is well understood in the field of media studies. Lessons from the use of film in design practice, although more typically used for explicit communication, are also considered. The paper sets the historical context of film theory covering narrative, documentary types, aesthetics, and drawing on semiotics and rhetoric in design. The author describes two case studies: extensive design research was summarised into a …

Intuitive Interaction And Older People, Alethea Blackler, Vesna Popovic, Doug Mahar, Gudur Raghavendra Reddy, Simon Lawry
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Older people often struggle with using contemporary products and interfaces. They show slower, less intuitive interaction with more errors. This paper reports on a large project designed to investigate why older people have these difficulties and what strategies could be used to mitigate them. The project team found that older people are less familiar with products that they own than younger ones, while both older and middle aged people are less familiar with products that they do not own than younger ones. Age-related cognitive decline is also related to slower and less intuitive performance with contemporary products and interfaces. Therefore, …
Designing Next-Next Generation Products And Services: A Design-Led Futures Framework, Martyn Evans
Designing Next-Next Generation Products And Services: A Design-Led Futures Framework, Martyn Evans
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Within the design industry there has been much promotion of how designers can engage with future oriented projects yet, there has been little investigation within academic design research of the methods employed. In some ways much of the discourse coming out of design practice is commercial propaganda - with the sole aim of generating new business. The design industry is good at communicating what future focussed services it is able to offer yet the methods employed are shrouded in a similar level of mystery (and scepticism) as those employed by a magician or shaman. Commercial sensitivities mean that the design …
Nation Branding: Developing A Visual Identity Handbook For Graphic Design Practitioners In Malaysia, Debbie Siew Siew Gan, Douglas Wilson, Anthony Crabbe
Nation Branding: Developing A Visual Identity Handbook For Graphic Design Practitioners In Malaysia, Debbie Siew Siew Gan, Douglas Wilson, Anthony Crabbe
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper presents a project developed during the course of a PhD investigating the role graphic design can play in the national branding of emergent nations such as Malaysia. Contemporary Malaysian society and culture was reviewed in the context of present views of globalisation and postcolonialism, and the phenomenon of “glocalisation” emerges as an important one in Malaysia. The need for a design handbook was suggested by the findings of a variety of design research methods that were used to identify the nature of graphic design practice in Malaysia, including the examination of the national governmental framework of design practices …
Tailoring Snack Food Package Design To Children As A Health Communication Strategy, Sunghyun R. Kang, Debra Satterfield, Joanne Lasrado, Richard Gonzalez, Nora Ladjahasan, Gregory Welk, Cynthia Wiley
Tailoring Snack Food Package Design To Children As A Health Communication Strategy, Sunghyun R. Kang, Debra Satterfield, Joanne Lasrado, Richard Gonzalez, Nora Ladjahasan, Gregory Welk, Cynthia Wiley
DRS Biennial Conference Series
The excess consumption of unhealthy snack foods by children and young adults has been shown to increase their rate of development of obesity, as well as decrease their likelihood of meeting current U.S. nutritional recommendations. Nutritional messages on snack food product labels have been traditionally evaluated almost exclusively from the perspective of the verbal content of the message. While such messages are important for communicating factual information, they do not address the potential significance of the visual qualities of that message in appropriately communicating with the target audience. The visual properties of the nutritional messages are critical in their ability …
The Multimodality And The Communication Of Explanation Graphics: Three Analytical Approaches On Safety Guides, Tingyi S. Lin
The Multimodality And The Communication Of Explanation Graphics: Three Analytical Approaches On Safety Guides, Tingyi S. Lin
DRS Biennial Conference Series
The purpose of explanation graphics is to present processes, quantities, and phenomena. In many cases such as facial expressions, emotional effects, and spatial relations, there is great potential for graphics to explain things and relations in clearer and more sophisticated ways than mere texts can. From the viewpoint of visual information, well-planned and sophisticated graphics can tell stories and make complex ideas clear (Holmes, 1984; Jacobson, 1999; Wurman, 1989; Tufte, 1983/2001). Effective and efficient guidelines for successful explanation graphics can help people make good decisions quickly. For example, explanation graphics for safety can rescue people. Most people usually do not …
Visualizing Transformation, Pia Pedersen
Visualizing Transformation, Pia Pedersen
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Transformation, defined as the step of extracting, arranging and simplifying data into visual form (M. Neurath, 1974), was developed in connection with ISOTYPE (International System Of TYpographic Picture Education) and might well be the most important legacy of Isotype to the field of graphic design. Recently transformation has attracted renewed interest because of the book The Transformer written by Robin Kinross and Marie Neurath. My on-going research project, summarized in this paper, identifies and depicts the essential principles of data visualization underlying the process of transformation with reference to Marie Neurath’s sketches on the Bilston Project. The material has been …
Design Case Studies: Never Let The Facts Get In The Way Of A Good Story!, Seymour Roworth-Stokes
Design Case Studies: Never Let The Facts Get In The Way Of A Good Story!, Seymour Roworth-Stokes
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper argues that the primary advantage of the case study, its ability to reveal insight into ‘real-life’ contemporary phenomena (the here and now) set against critical incidents, happenings or events over time (cause and effect), could be undermined by a lack of methodological rigor and sound empiricism in design research. Often the ‘one off’ is reported as a ‘case’ without the critical insight or analytical discourse necessary to derive sound theory from practice. A systematic audit of design case studies in four of the leading design research journals has been undertaken along with a detailed analysis of the type, …
Drawing Out: How Designers Analyse Written Texts In Visual Ways, Zoë Sadokierski, Kate Sweetapple
Drawing Out: How Designers Analyse Written Texts In Visual Ways, Zoë Sadokierski, Kate Sweetapple
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper discusses the methods practitioner-researchers use to analyse written texts. Much attention towards the written word in design discourse is directed at typography – how words are used visually to communicate meaning. This paper considers the written word from a different perspective. Here, we aim to reveal how designers analyse written texts for research and ideation. We describe a range of methods we have developed through our own research and practice, as well as analytical approaches other practitioner-researchers use. There are many approaches to the analysis of texts – for example, semiotic (Kress and van Leeuwen 2001, 2006), content …
Rethinking System Diagrams: From Arranging Components To Organizing Action, Thought, And Possibility, Soojin Jun, Miso Kim, Joonhwan Lee
Rethinking System Diagrams: From Arranging Components To Organizing Action, Thought, And Possibility, Soojin Jun, Miso Kim, Joonhwan Lee
DRS Biennial Conference Series
The use of system diagrams has encouraged information designers to tacitly consider the holistic context. However, because the traditional understanding about the nature of systems has been highly focused on the arrangement of components within a static model, users’ experience is considered little. The goal of this research is to provide a theoretical framework to broaden designers’ conception of the system diagram and enable them to design system diagrams that would prove most effective for different situations, needs, and design problems. Therefore, the key of system diagrams is to understand the relationship of how the system is organized, according to …
On The Impact Of Systemic Thinking In Sustainable Design, Ricardo Sosa, Alberto Dorantes, César Cárdenas, Victor Martínez
On The Impact Of Systemic Thinking In Sustainable Design, Ricardo Sosa, Alberto Dorantes, César Cárdenas, Victor Martínez
DRS Biennial Conference Series
The world faces significant problems of high complexity. The potential of knowledge, methods and tools used in design education and practice are useful for the development of sustainable solutions. Sustainable design is regarded in this paper as the integration of multiple competencies in order to generate and implement creative interventions that trigger positive changes in complex socio-technical systems. In this paper, a multidisciplinary case study is created for experimentation on the way in which different student groups approach complex problems, the type and level of thinking used, and the evaluation of the adequateness of their proposals by experts. The groups …
Dis/Ability Teaches Design!, Tom Bieling
Dis/Ability Teaches Design!, Tom Bieling
DRS Biennial Conference Series
In our paper, we claim that general human and artificial communication systems might be enriched by acknowledging and adding specifics of different ways of communication, perception and locomotion that refer to bodily impairment (Bieling, 2009). Schillmeier (2009, 79ff) sees disability less as an effect of bodily impairment, but more as a phenomenon of social construction. Oriented towards Science, Technology and Society Studies (STS) he conceptualizes disability as a “heterogenic, material event”, which connects “social and non-social relations of human and non-human actors, of things, bodies, technologies, sensorical pratices” and becomes able to be experienced in the sense of disabling as …

Joinedupdesign For Academies: Enhancing Design Learning Through Complexity, John Butcher, Friedemann Schaber
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper reports on research undertaken on the Sorrell Foundation’s Joinedupdesign for Academies programme, a pilot scheme with four universities in the United Kingdom (UK) aiming to inform the transition of ‘failing’ secondary (11-18) schools into academies (involving substantial re-designs and re-building). From the authors’ university, 12 undergraduate Design students participated in Joinedupdesign for Academies, in partnership with two secondary schools in the Midlands region of England. Like other universities in the UK, it has well-established links with local schools and programmes of community engagement, corresponding with reported US experiences (Lerner & Simon, 1998). The Sorrell Foundation model is an …
