Supporting People With Dementia- Understanding Their Interactions With Mixed Reality Technologies, Shital Desai, Alethea Blackler, Deborah Fels, Arlene Astell

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Emerging technologies such as Mixed Reality Technologies (MRTs) could offer possibilities to support People with Dementia (PWD). This study examined interactions of PWD with two MRTs - HoloLens and Osmo. Ten participants (MoCA = 18 to 23, Age= 63 to 88 years) played a game of Tangram on Osmo. Six of these participants played Young Conker on HoloLens. The study found that PWD used gestural actions in the physical world more correctly than speech. Audio prompts in human voice were more correctly perceived than visual prompts. Physical affordances, embodied actions and familiarity to verbal instructions contribute to this success. Visual …

Fixperts is a learner-centred, creative-problem-solving and project-based learning programme. In a Fixperts project, participants (Fixperts) team-up with an insight provider (Fix Partner) to identify a daily problem in the Fix Partner’s life that becomes the focus of a project aimed at delivering a solution or Fix. This paper introduces four pedagogic models developed via delivery of Fixperts projects at leading international design universities. It presents four approaches to the challenge of moving from the Person, to the Problem, to the Fix. These four models – Primary, Partnerships, Community, Public - represent the evolution of the Fixperts framework to better enable …

Navigating Contemporary Complexities In The Design Of Sexuality Education Materials, Louise Moana Kolff Aug 2020

Navigating Contemporary Complexities In The Design Of Sexuality Education Materials, Louise Moana Kolff

DRS Biennial Conference Series

More than ever quality comprehensive sexuality education is needed to help children make sense of increasingly complex and fluid notions of sexuality, gender and relationships. Designers of sexuality education are faced with the task of navigating issues such as earlier onset of puberty, changes to normative family structures, changing ways of conceiving and birthing, and the impact of technology and social media. This paper explores how some of these complexities influence the design of sexuality education by analysing the design of three books aimed at younger children, and through interviews with the Australian, Canadian and Danish creators of the books.

Under Construction: Reimagining Health And Safety Communication For Multilingual Workers In Qatar, Denielle Janine Emans Aug 2020

Under Construction: Reimagining Health And Safety Communication For Multilingual Workers In Qatar, Denielle Janine Emans

DRS Biennial Conference Series

As Qatar races to complete development projects in advance of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the country’s construction sector continues to face criticisms regarding its treatment of migrant workers. This criticism is compounded by nominal safety legislation at the national level and the need for accessible occupational health and safety (OHS) media on worksites. Adding to these concerns, there is currently no comprehensive approach to ensure the effective communication of vital health and safety information to workers with limited English/Arabic proficiency or low literacy skills. In light of these concerns, this paper describes a pilot study that brings together the …

Graphic Design Studies: What Can It Be? Following In Victor Margolin’S Footsteps For Possible Answers, Robert George Harland Aug 2020

Graphic Design Studies: What Can It Be? Following In Victor Margolin’S Footsteps For Possible Answers, Robert George Harland

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Graphic design studies is proposed as a new way to differentiate practice in graphic design from reflection on that practice. Previous attempts to link design studies and graphic design have fallen short of arguing for graphic design studies, and consequently has not been explicit about how graphic design studies may contribute to better understanding the nature of graphic design practice. This has not been helped by the abstruse nomenclature that confuses graphic design’s relationship to and distinction from other visual practices. Victor Margolin called this ‘narrative problems.’ This paper explores the potential to differentiate graphic design practice from graphic design …

Designing Six Dimensions Of Intercultural Teamwork: A Next-Gen Challenge In Co-Creation Processes, Kelly Murdoch-Kitt, Denielle J. Emans, Bruna Oewel Aug 2020

Designing Six Dimensions Of Intercultural Teamwork: A Next-Gen Challenge In Co-Creation Processes, Kelly Murdoch-Kitt, Denielle J. Emans, Bruna Oewel

DRS Biennial Conference Series

By examining remote collaboration as a design problem, this paper provides a rationale for the Six Dimensions of Intercultural Teamwork, a new framework to help teammates understand various differences such as how they build trust, exchange information, and cope with creative abrasion. Collaborative work intensifies when teammates are diverse in mindsets, cultural backgrounds, disciplines, and approaches to problems and projects. Stumbling blocks can also grow when teammates work remotely or are working with each other for the first time. Design processes can help remote teams improve the way they work together by introducing systemic thinking, promoting physical and iterative processes, …

The Space Between Us: How Designers And The General Population See Typographic Emphasis, Claire Louise Timpany Aug 2020

The Space Between Us: How Designers And The General Population See Typographic Emphasis, Claire Louise Timpany

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The typographic emphasis of headings in a document clarifies the structure of the content for the reader as well as assisting them with locating information. The visual presentation of these headings is important so that they are effective visual markers. The typographic methods used to emphasise these headings can vary greatly and are potentially perceived different by those consuming the document compared to those who are designing it. The research presented in this paper investigates through a paired comparison study whether designers perceive the typographic emphasis methods used for headings in the same way as the general population. While the …

This paper aims to propose a conceptual framework to understand factors that restrain the engagement of users with collectivist culture background to computer technology. Drawing on the intersectionality of Hartson’s Interaction Cycle and the classical rhetoric concept of logos, ethos, and pathos, this paper will discuss briefly the problem of HCI in the City of Surabaya, Indonesia as a case study. The application of rhetorical lenses in this research will aid the understanding Lloyd Bitzer’s “rhetorical situation” that is active in the interaction of human and the machine. Rhetoric will also assist the actualization of designer’s role from a merely …

The Search Of The Unpredictable – The Process Of Drawing, Michael Renner Jun 2018

The Search Of The Unpredictable – The Process Of Drawing, Michael Renner

DRS Biennial Conference Series

With the aim of shedding light on practical procedures of imagination, this paper is focusing on the analysis of experimental drawing processes. They were conducted in order to provide a basis for the discussion of the relationship between the gesture of drawing and the dispositions of the designer formed by inherited conditions, the socio-cultural framework and individual experiences (Damasio, 1999). With this approach of practice-led iconic research, it is not the goal to develop generalized descriptions for any innovation process as the Design Methods Movement of the 1960s once proposed, but to differentiate between conditions supporting or inhibiting the development …

Co-Creating Happy Moments: A Case Study Of Designing For People With Mental Health Challenges, Hong Li, Yiyun Zha, Jie Zhao

DRS Biennial Conference Series

We all have to consider the importance of mental health, which just as with physical health can cause us to feel ill, unwell and ostracized from our community. However, the stereotypes and prejudice that result from misconceptions about mental problems appears to form an impassive and invisible barrier between the people with mental health challenges and the public who is less willing to interact with them. As three researchers respectively from service design, visual communication and art education, we undertook collaborative interdisciplinary design as a strategy, in order to explore a participatory approach to engage with our participants, namely, an …

Developing Chilean Teaching Capability Through Design Thinking, Catalina Cortés, Úrsula Bravo, Maritza Rivera, María Jesús Honorato, Peter Lloyd, Derek Jones

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The current state of economic development of Chile requires human capital with thinking skills such as, analytical thinking, creative problem solving, and collaboration; all skills deployed extensively during the design process. At the primary and secondary school level, this problem is not solved only with curricular changes, but requires teacher training and support. There is empirical evidence that the international application of design thinking has been successful in education among students and teachers. However, directly importing such models may not be effective given the particularities of the Chilean education system. This paper reports a research project that sought to identify …

Using Design Competencies To Define Curricula And Support Learners, John Fass, Job Rutgers, Mo-Ling Chui

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper presents findings from design research related to a Design Competency Framework (DCF). The DCF is a visually-oriented system for developing curricula in design and is an example of the application of design research to design education. The DCF is divided into a set of sixteen categories including core skills, such as visualisation, and meta competencies such as synthesis. These are presented in the form of a matrix. We see three distinct advantages of using such a system. Firstly the DCF is personalisable at various scales such as individuals, units, courses, and programs. Secondly it is student centred - …

Graphic Design Research: A Cause For The Concerned, Robert George Harland, James Corazzo, Ian Gwilt, Alison Honnor, Steve Rigley

DRS Biennial Conference Series

There is an immediate need to clarify and develop the role of graphic design research for the theoretical underpinning of graphic design education. A report that accompanied the 2014 UK Research Excellence Framework (REF2014) described ‘the intellectual and theoretical underpinning of graphic and communication design’ as ‘generically weak’. We report on progress about a project designed to identify and map graphic design outputs from REF2014, involving both a data analysis of the ‘Art and Design: History, Practice and Theory’ submissions, and focus group research with graphic design academics designed to elicit feedback on the emergent themes being addressed by the …

Formgiving To Feminist Futures As Design Activism, Maryam Heidaripour, Laura Forlano Jun 2018

Formgiving To Feminist Futures As Design Activism, Maryam Heidaripour, Laura Forlano

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Design activism is the enforcement of positive socio-political change by intervening in daily lives. In this paper, we argue that ‘formgiving’ to futures--design interventions such as physical objects, embodied experiences, and affective engagements--is an activist practice with the unique qualities of engaging participants and facilitating the co-creation of alternatives. Central to our exploration is the question of how to participate in the work of generating new ways of conceptualizing, materializing, and experiencing alternative futures. Drawing on feminist theory and, in particular, its profound commitment to social justice, we discuss three core dimensions that are relevant to the practice of ‘formgiving’ …

An empirical study was conducted in London with 41 older people aged over 60 who were fit to walk. In this study, we classified 16 influencing factors of the pavements and four adverse effects of them and identified 13 behaviours that elderly pedestrians displayed when they encountered the pavement factors. In addition, 17 recommendations were proposed in …

User Empowerment By Design: A New Domestic Electricity Consumption Model. A Case Study Of Young Urban Tenants, Sagit Dominitz, Elad Persov Jun 2018

User Empowerment By Design: A New Domestic Electricity Consumption Model. A Case Study Of Young Urban Tenants, Sagit Dominitz, Elad Persov

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The energy sector paradigm with the power station on the one end, and the passive consumer on the other end, is becoming obsolete. This paper offers a rethink of domestic electricity consumption: from the worldview where the electricity provider is the sole manager of the process via its interfaces, and acting out of self-interest, to a broad view of sustainable development. The domestic electricity consumption management system presented in this paper deals with the Democratisation of managing electricity consumption, and dismantling an information monopoly by transferring knowledge and responsibility to the users, thus increasing the possibility for sustainable consumption. Design …

The Future Of Heuristic Fossils, Simon T. Downs, Claire A. Lerpiniere Jun 2018

The Future Of Heuristic Fossils, Simon T. Downs, Claire A. Lerpiniere

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The authors propose that while many fields of design are involved in reflexive interactions with design research tools, others are strongly heuristic in both their application of historic knowledge bases and in the ways in which they allow themselves to move forward, to construct new knowledge as an extension of craft thinking with user-centred evidence. These historical frames become a limiting factor in both the ways that practice can develop but also, more worryingly, in the ways in which these fields can develop their own research tools.

Tacit Synthesis: Typography As Research, Jilian Coorey, Aoife Mooney Jun 2018

Tacit Synthesis: Typography As Research, Jilian Coorey, Aoife Mooney

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The designer of today is solving complex problems. Among other skills, the literacy of other disciplines, the ability to be nimble in practice, engage in participatory design, and the capacity to interpret and synthesize research is imperative. For this study, we were intent on fostering a research-driven classroom, specifically in relation to typography. To expand student horizons, we’ve implemented the International Society of Typographic Designers briefs, providing a platform of research, innovation and conceptual thinking. Students typographically interpret a text, curating and authoring content. In implementing an inquiry-based learning methodology, research dictates form, rather than relying on typographic trends. Limiting …

Have I Got A Proposition For You: Developing The Capability For Compelling Arguments Through Rhetorical Practice Inthe Design Studio, Veronika Kelly, Myra Thiessen Jun 2018

Have I Got A Proposition For You: Developing The Capability For Compelling Arguments Through Rhetorical Practice Inthe Design Studio, Veronika Kelly, Myra Thiessen

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Designers draw implicitly on rhetorical modes of appeal (ethos, pathos, logos) in the way they talk about their work in terms of its strategic, social, and cultural impact. Rhetorical practice on its own, however, may not align with an ethical position. Yet design’s increasing emphasis on values, behaviours, and social action indicates a practice that requires expertise in formulating compelling design propositions that inspire people to act. This has significance for design education in relation to developing learners’ capabilities in making more compelling arguments for their design work that emphasise the social and ethical impact of design in use. This …
