Bispectral Reconstruction Of Signals In Noise: Amplitude Reconstruction Issues, Gopal Sundaramoorthy, M.R. Raghuveer, Sohail Dianat Jan 1990

Bispectral Reconstruction Of Signals In Noise: Amplitude Reconstruction Issues, Gopal Sundaramoorthy, M.R. Raghuveer, Sohail Dianat

Articles

When we have observations of a discrete deterministic signal (physical object) in colored Gaussian noise, it is possible to obtain asymptotically unbiased estimates of the bispectrum of the signal only at frequency pairs (al, w2) which do not satisfy any of the following: wI = 0, w2 = 0, and o1 + w2 = 0. Several approaches reported in the literature that deal with magnitude reconstruction from bispectra use bispectrum samples that lie on one of these three straight lines, thus using samples which are biased due to noise. We propose two approaches that rectify this situation. The paper also …

Constructing 6-(14,7,4) Designs, Donald Kreher, Stanislaw Radziszowski Jan 1990

Constructing 6-(14,7,4) Designs, Donald Kreher, Stanislaw Radziszowski

Articles

A summary of the algebraic and computational techniques used in the construction of two non-isomorphic simple 6-( 14,7,4) designs and four non-isomorphic simple 5-( 13,6,4) designs is presented. With the exception of the 6-(33,8,36) designs discovered by Magliveras and Leavitt, and the 6(20,9,112) designs discovered by Kramer, Leavitt and Magliveras, this is the only other small parameter situation in which a simple 6-design is known to exist.

Presence/Absence Of An Observer In A Word Association Test, Morton Isaacs, Kathleen Chen Jan 1990

Presence/Absence Of An Observer In A Word Association Test, Morton Isaacs, Kathleen Chen

Articles

Forty-eight subjects (24 men, 24 women) responded to 20 word stimuli presented by a microcomputer program that recorded each subject's response latency and response to each stimulus word. Emotionality of stimulus word and presence/absence of an observer were independently varied. Two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed significant difference in latencies attributable to the emotionality of the stimulus word, whereas neither the presence/absence of the observer nor the interaction effect was significant. The results suggest the possible use of latency analysis as a tool in situations where an objective, statistical, and easily obtainable evaluative measurement of the level of emotionality of …

The Ramsey Numbers R(K_3, K_8 - E) And R(K_3, K_9 - E), Stanislaw Radziszowski Jan 1990

The Ramsey Numbers R(K_3, K_8 - E) And R(K_3, K_9 - E), Stanislaw Radziszowski

Articles

We give a general construction of a triangle free graph on 4p points whose complement does not contain K_p+2 - e for p >= 4. This implies the the Ramsey number R(K_3, K_k - e) >= 4k - 7 for k >= 6. We also present a cyclic triangle free graph on 30 points whose complement does not contain K_9 - e. The first construction gives lower bounds equal to the exact values of the corresponding Ramsey number for k = 6, 7 and 8. the upper bounds are obtained by using computer algorithms. In particular, we obtain two new …

The Effect Of A Single Point On Correlation And Slope, David L. Farnsworth Jan 1990

The Effect Of A Single Point On Correlation And Slope, David L. Farnsworth

Articles

By augmenting a bivariate data set with one point, the correlation coefficient and/or the slope of the regression line can be changed to any prescribed values. For the target value of the correlation coefficient or the slope, the coordinates of the new point are found as a function of certain statistics of the original data. The location of this new point with respect to the original data is investigated.

The 41st Session Of The Un Sub-Commission On Prevention Of Discrimination And Protection Of Minorities, Robin M. Maher, David Weissbrodt

Articles

The forty-first session ofthe Sub-Commission on Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities (hereinafter the Sub-Commission) met in August 1989 to address a number of human rights situations that had come to worldwide attention since 1988. The session followed the bloody suppres- sion of demonstrations in the People's Republic of China, a rash of bombings and political assassinations in Colombia, and the use of chemical weapons against unarmed civilians in Iraq. Moreover, unusual political pressures from a variety of sources played an important role. As the Sub-Commission de- bated its first resolution on a country which holds a permanent seat …

A Need For Clarity: Toward A New Standard For Preliminary Injunctions, Lea B. Vaughn Jan 1990

A Need For Clarity: Toward A New Standard For Preliminary Injunctions, Lea B. Vaughn

Articles

This Article examines the various standards for preliminary injunctions and demonstrates the ways in which the standards have become confused by irrelevant layers of meaning. Those layers of meaning are analyzed; nonfunctional accretions are discarded, and legitimate modem meanings are developed. The discussion is conducted against a background of assumptions about what makes a good standard, for example, accessibility and comprehensiveness. By modernizing the standard, the parties and the courts will frankly and openly discuss the underlying legal issues and values. This, in turn, should lead to more legitimate decisions.

Under a modernized standard, a court should redress immediate pretrial …

Simulation Of Optical Remote Sensing Systems, John Kerekes, David Landgrebe Jan 1989

Simulation Of Optical Remote Sensing Systems, John Kerekes, David Landgrebe

Articles

Research on understanding the remote-sensing process as a system and investigating the interrelated effects of various parameter is described. A system model for the simulation of remote-sensing systems is presented. The system is divided into three parts: the scene, the sensor, and the processing algorithms. Models are presented and implemented for these component systems. Validation of the system model is considered over a specific test site. Results of the simulation for various scene and sensor configurations are included. Results of applying the model to various system configurations using simulated Landsat sensors are then presented to show how the simulation can …

Integrating Hearing And Deaf Students On A College Campus, Paula Brown, Susan Foster Jan 1989

Integrating Hearing And Deaf Students On A College Campus, Paula Brown, Susan Foster

Articles

This study has two purposes: (1) to learn how hearing students in a mainstream college setting perceive deaf students as classmates, and (20 to discover how those perceptions influence the integration of deaf and hearing students on campus. Thirty full-time students at the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York, were interviewed using in-depth, open-ended interview strategies. It was found that even in this setting, designed expressly to integrate deaf and hearing students, full integration did not occur. Deaf students were successfully placed on the campus with hearing students for education purposes; however, social integration did not occur.

Comment On “A Prototype Secs Message Service For Communication In The Semiconductor Manufacturing Environment", James Baratz, John Birchak, Frederic Brehm

Articles

The protocol described in the article “A Prototype SECS Message Service for Communication in the Semiconductor Manufacturing Environment”’ was designed in cooperation with the Subnet Task Force of the Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI) Communications Standards Committee. The technical design and a software implementation were carried out at the University of Michigan with frequent reviews by the task force, particularly during the early months. The primary development of SMS was done by James R. Moyne as a research project directed by Prof. Leo C. McAfee, Jr., and supported by the Semiconductor Research Corporation. The published article reflects the services …
