Color Image Processing: Basics And Special Issue Overview, H. Joel Trussell, Eli Saber, Michael Vrhel Jan 2005

Color Image Processing: Basics And Special Issue Overview, H. Joel Trussell, Eli Saber, Michael Vrhel

Articles

Humans have always seen the world in color but only recently have we been able to generate vast quantities of color images with such ease. In the last three decades, we have seen a rapid and enormous transition from grayscale images to color ones. Today, we are exposed to color images on a daily basis in print, photographs, television, computer displays, and cinema movies, where color now plays a vital role in the advertising and dissemination of information throughout the world. Color monitors, printers, and copiers now dominate the office and home environments, with color becoming increasingly cheaper and easier …

Finally, liquid crystal display (LCD) devices are presented.

An Introductory Software Engineering Course That Facilitates Active Learning, Stephanie Ludi, Swaminathan Natarajan, Thomas Reichlmayr Jan 2005

An Introductory Software Engineering Course That Facilitates Active Learning, Stephanie Ludi, Swaminathan Natarajan, Thomas Reichlmayr

Articles

At the Rochester Institute of Technology, the undergraduate introductory software engineering course has been redesigned from a lecture-lab format to a project-centric studio format. The new format blends the lecture material with the project work. As a result, students drive their own learning experience based on scaffolding created by the course design. The challenges faced and the techniques and strategies utilized in the planning and delivery of the course will be discussed, including the utilization of online learning support infrastructure. This paper presents instructor experiences, analysis of student feedback, lessons learned and recommendations for other educators considering an active learning …

An Analysis Of Indirect Bankruptcy Costs On The Ts-Bc Hypothesis: A Note, Khondkar Karim, Zhaohui Zhang, Dayong Liu Jan 2005

An Analysis Of Indirect Bankruptcy Costs On The Ts-Bc Hypothesis: A Note, Khondkar Karim, Zhaohui Zhang, Dayong Liu

Articles

This paper argues theoretically the impact of expected indirect bankruptcy costs on optimal capital structure in the Tax Shield-Bankruptcy Cost (TS-BC) framework. By relaxing assumptions of Modigliani and Miller (1958,1963) to incorporate bankruptcy costs into capital structure policy making, we argue that expected indirect bankruptcy costs caused by higher financial risk increase a leveraged firm's business risk, thus increase its cost of capital. Based on the notion that the optimal capital structure can be determined by comparing the marginal tax shield with marginal bankruptcy probability based on binomial multiple logit model and the residual market value of the firm in …

Attitude And Age Differences In Online Buying, Patricia Sorce, Victor Perotti, Stanley Widrick Jan 2005

Attitude And Age Differences In Online Buying, Patricia Sorce, Victor Perotti, Stanley Widrick

Articles

The internet has typically been described as a young man's medium. Young men have also been regarded as the typical profile of the early adopters of online shopping. However, as the internet has become more ubiquitous, the profile of the online shopper has come to resemble that of the general population (Stores, 2001). For example in the year 2000 in the USA, women comprised almost 60% of the online shoppers. In a report by Jupiter Media Metrix, consumers age 50 and older now comprise 16% of new online shoppers in the USA and the number is expected to double by …

London's Suicide Bombers: Botched Operation, Tom Clonan Jan 2005

London's Suicide Bombers: Botched Operation, Tom Clonan

Articles

Thursday’s attacks on London’s tube network and on a double-decker bus in Hackney bear the hallmarks of a botched operation. As more information emerges, the authorities in London have confirmed that at least three of the devices isolated on Thursday were of a similar size to those detonated by Islamic extremists during the 7/7 attack on London earlier this month. The fourth device appears to have been slightly smaller. These devices consist of three main components. The first is a battery powered timing power unit or TPU which initiates the detonation sequence electrically. In recent times, mobile phones have been …

Ira Arms Are Likely Stockpiled, Ready For Destruction, Tom Clonan Jan 2005

Ira Arms Are Likely Stockpiled, Ready For Destruction, Tom Clonan

Articles

The Provisional IRA in its statement yesterday pledges to ‘verifiably put its arms beyond use in a way which will further enhance public confidence and to conclude this as quickly as possible’. Given the size and dispersed nature of the IRA’s arsenal, this task will likely prove a logistical challenge that will take at least several weeks to complete. Over the last four decades, the IRA has taken delivery of a considerable number of consignments of weapons for its armed campaign. The main sources of IRA armament have traditionally been from republican sympathisers in the US and from other anti-establishment …

The Future Of Ireland's Neutrality And Security, Tom Clonan Jan 2005

The Future Of Ireland's Neutrality And Security, Tom Clonan

Articles

The future for Ireland’s conventional defence forces and defence and security policy appears set to follow a peculiarly asymmetrical trajectory. On the one hand, Ireland’s skies, land mass and territorial waters lack even the most basic defensive military oversight or protection. On the other hand, in a process that has denied Irish citizens a healthy debate on military neutrality, Ireland’s Defence Forces are being integrated by stealth into the EU’s newly-created military structures. Ireland's defence forces are being integrated into an EU with grand military ambitions. According to the EU St. Malo Declaration of 1998, this grand design involves Europe …

Changing Festival Places: Insights From Galway, Bernadette Quinn Jan 2005

Changing Festival Places: Insights From Galway, Bernadette Quinn

Articles

This paper focuses on cultural reproduction in arts festival settings. It begins by conceptualizing festival settings as places whose characters derive from a combination of both internally derived traits and a diverse series of interactions with other places. Drawing on case study research conducted in an arts festival setting in Galway in the Republic of Ireland, the discussion identifies how elements indigenous to the place connect and engage with external forces. The study found the process of interacting with other places to be complex, involving much negotiation and adaptation as locales became contexts for re-working an array of often conflicting …

The Expressive Power Of Adjudication, Richard H. Mcadams Jan 2005

The Expressive Power Of Adjudication, Richard H. Mcadams

Articles

This article provides a causal explanation of adjudicative compliance that is distinct from both the court's threat of sanctions and its institutional legitimacy. The new mechanism for compliance is the power of adjudicative expression. The theory of "expressive adjudication" arises from a previously neglected synergy among three expressive concepts in game theory -correlated equilibria, focal points, and signals. The article identifies the circumstances in which adjudicative expression can, by itself, influence the behavior of existing disputants and of future potential disputants. In each case, ambiguity in the relevant facts or the concepts underlying intentional and spontaneous order can cause a …

A Social Networks Theory Of Privacy, Lior Strahilevitz Jan 2005

A Social Networks Theory Of Privacy, Lior Strahilevitz

Articles

What facts are public and what facts are private? It is the fundamental, first-principles question in privacy law, and a necessary element in the two most important privacy torts public disclosure of private facts and intrusion upon seclusion. This paper argues that insights from the literature on social networks and information dissemination can help provide courts with a coherent and consistent methodology for determining whether an individual has a reasonable expectation of privacy in a particular fact that he has shared with one or more persons. The social networks literature has generated theoretical and empirical insights about the probability that …

From The Asylum To The Prison: Rethinking The Incarceration Revolution, Bernard E. Harcourt Jan 2005

From The Asylum To The Prison: Rethinking The Incarceration Revolution, Bernard E. Harcourt

Articles

The incarceration revolution of the late twentieth century fueled ongoing research on the relationship between rates of incarceration and crime, unemployment, education, and other social indicators. In this research, the variable intended to capture the level of confinement in society was conceptualized and measured as the rate of incarceration in state and federal prisons and county jails. This, however, fails to take account of other equally important forms of confinement, especially commitment to mental hospitals and asylums. When the data on mental hospitalization rates are combined with the data on imprisonment rates for the period 1928 through 2000, the incarceration …
