Using Multispectral Information To Decrease The Spectral Artifacts In Sparse-Aperture Imagery, Noah R. Block, Robert E. Introne, John Schott May 2005

Using Multispectral Information To Decrease The Spectral Artifacts In Sparse-Aperture Imagery, Noah R. Block, Robert E. Introne, John Schott

Articles

Optical sparse-aperture telescopes represent a promising new technology to increase the effective diameter of an optical system while reducing its weight and stowable size. The sub-apertures of a sparse-aperture system are phased to synthesize a telescope system that has a larger effective aperture than any of the independentsub-apertures. Sparse-apertures have mostly been modeled to date using a "gray-world" approximation where the input is a grayscale image. The gray-world model makes use of a "polychromatic" optical transfer function (OTF) where the spectral OTFs are averaged to form a single OTF. This OTF is then convolved with the grayscale image to create …

Time-Gated Topographic Lidar Scene Simulation, Scott D. Brown, Daniel Blevins, John R. Schott May 2005

Time-Gated Topographic Lidar Scene Simulation, Scott D. Brown, Daniel Blevins, John R. Schott

Articles

The Digital Imaging and Remote Sensing Image Generation (DIRSIG) model has been developed at the RochesterInstitute of Technology (RIT) for over a decade. The model is an established, first-principles based scene simulationtool that has been focused on passive multi- and hyper-spectral sensing from the visible to long wave infrared (0.4 to 14 µm). Leveraging photon mapping techniques utilized by the computer graphics community, a first-principles based elastic Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) model was incorporated into the passive radiometry framework so that the model calculates arbitrary, time-gated radiances reaching the sensor for both the atmospheric and topographicreturns. The active LIDAR …

A Universal Density Profile For Dark And Luminous Matter?, David Merritt, Julio Navarro, Aaron Ludlow, Adrian Jenkins May 2005

A Universal Density Profile For Dark And Luminous Matter?, David Merritt, Julio Navarro, Aaron Ludlow, Adrian Jenkins

Articles

We explore similarities in the luminosity distribution of early type galaxies and the mass profiles of LCDM halos. The spatial structure of these systems may be accurately described by a simple law where the logarithmic slope of the projected density is a power law of radius; the Sérsic law. We show that this law provides a significantly better fit than a three-parameter generalization of the NFW profile and derive the best-fitting Sérsic parameters for a set of high-resolution LCDM halos spanning a wide range in mass. The mean Sérsic n values are 3.0 for dwarf- and galaxy-sized halos and 2.4 …

Practical Spectral Capture Systems For Museum Imaging, Lawrence Taplin, Roy Berns May 2005

Practical Spectral Capture Systems For Museum Imaging, Lawrence Taplin, Roy Berns

Articles

Spectral imaging systems for capturing museum artwork have not moved beyond the research laboratory. System components and their selection criteria necessary to assemble a complete system are explored in this paper categorically. The final system is practical if it meets the criteria of speed cost and accuracy necessary to act as a direct replacement for the traditional RGB based digital imaging systems in museum photo studios. It is hoped that the advantages of spectral imaging will be widely recognized and adopted once a practical system is available.

A Prototype Calibration Target For Spectral Imaging, Mahnaz Mohammadi, Mahdi Nezamabadi, Roy Berns May 2005

A Prototype Calibration Target For Spectral Imaging, Mahnaz Mohammadi, Mahdi Nezamabadi, Roy Berns

Articles

A prototype calibration target was designed and tested for spectral imaging that consisted of 14 samples, nine of which were derived from statistical analyses of artist paints and a five-step grey scale. This target was compared with those commonly used when calibrating spectral-imaging systems. An Esser TE221 scanner target, GretagMacbeth ColorChecker DC, GretagMacbeth ColorChecker Color Rendition Chart, and the prototype target were used as both calibration and verification targets using a modified commercial color-filter-array digital camera as a spectralimaging device. When evaluating a verification target made from 30 different pigments, the prototype target had equivalent performance. Thus for spectral imaging, …

Exploring The Color Inconstancy Of Prints, Yongda Chen, Roy Berns, Lawrence Taplin May 2005

Exploring The Color Inconstancy Of Prints, Yongda Chen, Roy Berns, Lawrence Taplin

Articles

The color inconstancy of prints is related to the ink spectral properties and the lookup table for multiink printing systems. In this paper, color inconstancy was investigated for several ink-jet printers based on their ink set and the default lookup tables. A virtual model for each printer was created to determine the range of color inconstancy that a specific ink set could achieve. The color inconstancy performance of each default lookup table was evaluated by evaluating the color inconstancy of a printed test target. The optimum combinations of three- and four-chromatic inks were investigated to minimize the color inconstancy and …

Using The Matrix R Method For Spectral Image Archives, Yonghui Zhao, Lawrence Taplin, Mahdi Nezamabadi May 2005

Using The Matrix R Method For Spectral Image Archives, Yonghui Zhao, Lawrence Taplin, Mahdi Nezamabadi

Articles

Conventional color digital cameras can only produce three-channel images so they are limited when high-quality color reproduction is required. Alternatively, spectral imaging increases the number of channels and can retrieve spectral reflectance for each scene pixel. The major goal of spectral imaging is high spectral accuracy, while it may also be beneficial to achieve high colorimetric accuracy for a specific viewing condition. A new spectral reconstruction method, called the matrix R method, was developed to achieve both goals simultaneously. An experiment was performed to test this method. The experimental results have been very promising; average color difference for all targets …

Arts Festivals And The City, Bernadette Quinn May 2005

Arts Festivals And The City, Bernadette Quinn

Articles

There has been a remarkable rise in the number of urban arts festivals in recent decades. The outcomes of cities' engagement with arts festivals, however, remain little understood, particularly in social and cultural terms. This article reviews existing literature on urban festivals and argues that city authorities tend to disregard the social value of festivals and to construe them simply as vehicles of economic generation or as 'quick fix' solutions to city image problems. While such an approach renders certain benefits, it is ultimately quite limiting. If arts festivals are to achieve their undoubted potential in animating communities, celebrating diversity …

Academic And Practitioner Interests Regarding Emerging Technologies In Accounting, Thomas J. Tribunella, M. Pamela Neely, Heidi Tribunella May 2005

Academic And Practitioner Interests Regarding Emerging Technologies In Accounting, Thomas J. Tribunella, M. Pamela Neely, Heidi Tribunella

Articles

In this paper we investigate the differences between practitioner and academic interests in emerging technologies. We compare and contrast the results of an accounting faculty survey to the AICPA's (American Institute of Certified Public Accountants) Top Technology list. It appears that academics and practitioners have significantly different interests concerning emerging technologies. Furthermore, technology interests for both groups change over time. We then discuss the problems that arise from the differing points of view and suggest some possible solutions.

An Examination Of Ethical Issues Pertaining To Educational Research, Greg Gallagher May 2005

An Examination Of Ethical Issues Pertaining To Educational Research, Greg Gallagher

Articles

The social sciences in general and educational researchers in particular have become more and more conscious of ethical propriety and the need for universally acceptable codes of ethical conduct in recent years. This newfound interest stems in part from criticisms of innovative contemporary research methodologies, and the fear that they may be at odds with certain fundamental ethical principles. This, in turn, has resulted in the integrity and validity of some of these new contemporary styles of research being held up to scrutiny and debated by adherents to the more conventional research methodologies. This paper begins by tracing back to …

Deformable Model For 3d Intramodal Nonrigid Breast Image Registration With Fiducial Skin Markers, Mehmet Unlu, Andrzej Krol, Ioana Coman, James A. Mandel, Karl G. Baum, Wei Lee, Edward D. Lipson, David H. Feiglin Apr 2005

Deformable Model For 3d Intramodal Nonrigid Breast Image Registration With Fiducial Skin Markers, Mehmet Unlu, Andrzej Krol, Ioana Coman, James A. Mandel, Karl G. Baum, Wei Lee, Edward D. Lipson, David H. Feiglin

Articles

We implemented a new approach to intramodal non-rigid 3D breast image registration. Our method uses fiducial skin markers (FSM) placed on the breast surface. After determining the displacements of FSM, finite element method (FEM) is used to distribute the markers’ displacements linearly over the entire breast volume using the analogy between the orthogonal components of the displacement field and a steady state heat transfer (SSHT). It is valid because the displacement field in x, y and z direction and a SSHT problem can both be modeled using LaPlace’s equation and the displacements are analogous to temperature differences in SSHT. It …

Loss Cone Refilling Rates In Galactic Nuclei, David Merritt, Jianxiang Wang Mar 2005

Loss Cone Refilling Rates In Galactic Nuclei, David Merritt, Jianxiang Wang

Articles

A gap in phase space is opened up by a binary supermassive black hole as it ejects stars in a galactic nucleus. This gap must be refilled before the single black hole that subsequently forms can disrupt or accrete stars. We compute loss cone refilling rates for a sample of elliptical galaxies as a function of the mass ratio of the binary that preceded the current, single black hole. Refilling times are of order 1010 yr or longer in bright elliptical galaxies. Tidal flaring rates in these galaxies might be much lower than predicted using steady-state models.

Discrete Wavelet Transform Core For Image Processing Applications, Andreas E. Savakis, Richard Carbone Feb 2005

Discrete Wavelet Transform Core For Image Processing Applications, Andreas E. Savakis, Richard Carbone

Articles

This paper presents a flexible hardware architecture for performing the Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) on a digital image. The proposed architecture uses a variation of the lifting scheme technique and provides advantages that include small memory requirements, fixed-point arithmetic implementation, and a small number of arithmetic computations. The DWT core may be used for image processing operations, such as denoising and image compression. For example, the JPEG2000 still image compression standard uses the Cohen-Daubechies-Favreau (CDF) 5/3 and CDF 9/7 DWT for lossless and lossy image compression respectively. Simple wavelet image denoising techniques resulted in improved images up to 27 dB …

Comparison Of Radio Observations And Numerical Simulations Of The Radio Lobes Of Cygnus A, Joel C. Carvalho, Ruth A. Daly, Matthew P. Mory, Christopher P. O'Dea Feb 2005

Comparison Of Radio Observations And Numerical Simulations Of The Radio Lobes Of Cygnus A, Joel C. Carvalho, Ruth A. Daly, Matthew P. Mory, Christopher P. O'Dea

Articles

We present a comparison of radio observations of the archetypal powerful radio galaxy Cygnus A and 2-D numerical hydrodynamical simulations. We characterize some global trends in the observed radio properties and compare them with the properties of a simulated radio source. The numerical results are the following. Jets propagating in a constant density atmosphere will decelerate with time. Thus, the estimated dynamical age of the source will be greater than the actual age of the source. For a source similar to Cygnus A the difference will be about a factor of 2. The second moment gives an accurate representation of …

Water Conservation And Resuse Strategy For Ireland, Liam Mccarton, Sean O'Hogain Feb 2005

Water Conservation And Resuse Strategy For Ireland, Liam Mccarton, Sean O'Hogain

Articles

The traditional approach to meeting increased demand is to augment supply. However, mobilising new resources involves ever higher costs. Increasing water efficiency by reducing the amount of water required to accomplish a given task can significantly contribute towards balancing supply and demand. The water saved as a result of PCC reduction can be used to augment existing supplies. This can be the least cost option, particularly when the environmental and social costs of developing new resources are included in the analysis. Allied to this is the concept of sustainability, which can be defined as ‘development that meets the needs of …

The Supermassive Black Hole In The Seyfert 2 Galaxy Ngc 5252, Alessandro Capetti, Alessandro Marconi, Duccio Macchetto, David J. Axon

Articles

We present results from HST/STIS long-slit spectroscopy of the gas motions in the nuclear region of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 5252. The observed velocity field is consistent with gas in regular rotation with superposed localized patches of disturbed gas. The dynamics of the circumnuclear gas can be accurately reproduced by adding to the stellar mass component a compact dark mass of MBH = 0.95 (−0.45;+1.45) ×109 M⊙, very likely a supermassive black hole (BH). Contrarily to results obtained in similar studies rotational broadening is sufficient to reproduce also the behaviour of line widths. The BH mass estimated for NGC …

Computational Design And Experimental Testing Of A Novel Axial Flow Lvad, Alexandrina Untaroiu, Houston Wood, Paul Allaire Jan 2005

Computational Design And Experimental Testing Of A Novel Axial Flow Lvad, Alexandrina Untaroiu, Houston Wood, Paul Allaire

Articles

Thousands of cardiac failure patients per year in the United States could benefit from long-term mechanical circulatory support as destination therapy. To provide an improvement over currently available devices, we have designed a fully implantable axial-flow ventricular assist device with a magnetically levitated impeller (LEV-VAD). In contrast to currently available devices, the LEV-VAD has an unobstructed blood flow path and no secondary flow regions, generating substantially less retrograde and stagnant flow. The pump design included the extensive use of conventional pump design equations and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling for predicting pressure-flow curves, hydraulic efficiencies, scalar fluid stress levels, exposure …

Modeling Of Electrooptic Polymer Electrical Characteristics In A Three-Layer Optical Waveguide Modulator, Michael Watson, Paul Ashley, Andrew Guenthner Jan 2005

Modeling Of Electrooptic Polymer Electrical Characteristics In A Three-Layer Optical Waveguide Modulator, Michael Watson, Paul Ashley, Andrew Guenthner

Articles

The electrical characteristics of electrooptic polymer waveguide modulators are often described by the bulk reactance of the individual layers. However, the resistance and capacitance between the layers can significantly alter the electrical performance of a waveguide modulator. These interface characteristics are related to the boundary charge density and are strongly affected by the adhesion of the layers in the waveguide stack. An electrical reactance model has been derived to investigate this phenomenon at low frequencies. The model shows the waveguide stack frequency response has no limiting effects below the microwave range and that a true dc response requires a stable …

A Comparison Of Small-Aperture And Image-Based Spectrophotometry Of Paintings, Roy Berns, Lawrence Taplin, Francisco Imai Jan 2005

A Comparison Of Small-Aperture And Image-Based Spectrophotometry Of Paintings, Roy Berns, Lawrence Taplin, Francisco Imai

Articles

An experiment was performed that compared conventional small-aperture and image-based reflection spectrophotometry of paintings. The imaging system used a liquid-crystal tunable filter, resulting in 31 spectral bands evenly sampled between 400 and 700 nm and ranging in bandwidth between 10 and 60 nm. The small-aperture spectrophotometer had a constant bandwidth of 10 nm. Test targets consisting of chromatic and neutral samples of various colors and spectral properties were used to derive a calibration transformation between the two technologies. Three paintings were analyzed: Saint Jerome Reading by Alvise Vivarini, Murnau by Alexej von Jawlensky and Pot of Geraniums by Henri Matisse, …

Size Matters: The Influence Of Viewing Distance On Perceived Spatial Frequency And Contrast, Garrett Johnson, Ethan Montag Jan 2005

Size Matters: The Influence Of Viewing Distance On Perceived Spatial Frequency And Contrast, Garrett Johnson, Ethan Montag

Articles

The use of soft-copy displays to simulate printing devices is a common practice in the color imaging community. CRT and LCD displays can be used as a means of proofing hardcopy prints, and can also be used as tools for the development and evaluation of future imaging systems. Desktop display devices are typically of a much lower resolution than most printers, which can make it difficult to evaluate the spatial structure of prints such as the perceptibility of half-tone dots or graininess. To evaluate these spatial properties one common practice is to use a larger soft-copy display viewed further away. …

Analysis Of Observer And Cultural Variability While Generating "Preferred" Color Reproductions Of Pictorial Images, Scot Fernandez, Mark Fairchild, Karen Braun Jan 2005

Analysis Of Observer And Cultural Variability While Generating "Preferred" Color Reproductions Of Pictorial Images, Scot Fernandez, Mark Fairchild, Karen Braun

Articles

The goal of color reproduction is generally to maximize the accuracy between an original scene or image and a reproduction. The focus of this paper is to better understand color preference reproduction where the original image is the cognitive representation of the reproduced image rather than a physical original. In order to quantify the degree of accuracy when measuring cognition, the implementation of psychophysical techniques is required. This paper outlines two psychophysical experiments, a ranked-order design utilizing hard-copy reproduction, and the method of adjustments utilizing soft-copy reproduction. Both experiments depend on the application of five independent colorimetric adjustment dimensions to …

Improving The Color Constancy Of Prints By Ink Design, Yongda Chen, Roy Berns, Lawrence Taplin Jan 2005

Improving The Color Constancy Of Prints By Ink Design, Yongda Chen, Roy Berns, Lawrence Taplin

Articles

A computer simulation was performed to investigate optimal fourand five-ink sets in order to minimize color inconstancy while maintaining a large color gamut. The effect of including a spectrally-flat black ink on color constancy was explored. The relationship between ink shape and the color constancy of prints was also analyzed. The results show that the ink shape in the middle wavelength region is very important for the color constancy of prints. The minimum and maximum color inconstancy indices that the different ink sets can achieve, which were optimized by different objective functions, were explored. The results show that color constancy …

Lossless Generalized-Lsb Data Embedding, Mehmet Cilik, Gaurav Sharma, Ahmet Tekalp Jan 2005

Lossless Generalized-Lsb Data Embedding, Mehmet Cilik, Gaurav Sharma, Ahmet Tekalp

Articles

We present a novel lossless (reversible) data-embedding technique, which enables the exact recovery of the original host signal upon extraction of the embedded information. A generalization of the well-known least significant bit (LSB) modification is proposed as the data-embedding method, which introduces additional operating points on the capacity-distortion curve. Lossless recovery of the original is achieved by compressing portions of the signal that are susceptible to embedding distortion and transmitting these compressed descriptions as a part of the embedded payload. A prediction-based conditional entropy coder which utilizes unaltered portions of the host signal as side-information improves the compression efficiency and, …
