Stereotyping Of The Deaf Student And Klineberg's "Kernal Of Truth" Hypothesis, Morton Isaacs Jan 1974

Stereotyping Of The Deaf Student And Klineberg's "Kernal Of Truth" Hypothesis, Morton Isaacs

Articles

Investigation of stereotyping has generally taken place either well after the process has occurred or within laboratory situations. The recent formation of the National Institute for the Deaf (NTID) within the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) offered a rare opportunity to investigate what occurs when a stigmatizable minority group is introduced into a majority culture. The deaf in general are readily distinguishable from the hearing due to their inability to easliy follow verbal communications, wearing of hearing aids, use of manual communication involving gestures in addition to or in place of sounds, and other observable behavior. Klineberg (1950) proposed a …

Lizard Energetics And Diet, F. Harvey Pough Jan 1973

Lizard Energetics And Diet, F. Harvey Pough

Articles

Article may be found at: http://www.jstor.org/view/00129658/di960231/96p00137/0 In the families Agamidae, Gerrhosauridae, Iguanidae, and Scincidae, species that weigh more than 300 g are almost all herbivores, whereas those weighing less than 50-100 g are carnivores. Juveniles of large herbivorous species tend to be carnivorous until they reach body weights of 50-300 g. Diet is compared to metabolic expenditure in these lizards. Although smaller animals have higher weight-specific metabolic rates, the greater total metabolicrate of larger animals requires a greater caloric intake. Juvenile animals and species of small body size are primarily insectivorous. It is postulated that larger animals of these families …

Attitudes Toward The College Deaf Student: Stereotype Or "Kernel Of Truth"?, Morton Isaacs Jan 1973

Attitudes Toward The College Deaf Student: Stereotype Or "Kernel Of Truth"?, Morton Isaacs

Articles

The introduction of a minority group of deaf students into the majority hearing culture (approximately 410 NTID students and 5000 full-time RIT students, as of 1972) offered an intense microcosm of the situation when any minority exists within a majority group. The deaf students in general are readily identifiable as a group since they of course do not hear well enough to participate easily in a conversation with an ordinary hearing students. The present investigation then seeks to establish if any stereotype does exist among the hearing about the personality of the deaf, and, if there is such a set …

Precision Teaching Of The Deaf, Morton Isaacs Jan 1973

Precision Teaching Of The Deaf, Morton Isaacs

Articles

Forty-eight deaf NTID students were randomly assigned to an introductory psychology course, 31 to a group which was conducted under a precision teaching method and 17 under the traditional lecture format. Although comparable initially in intelligence and hearing discrimination skills, the group which received the precision teaching scored 13.6 to 16.6 points higher in three written, multiple-choice examinations. They also indicated on a written questionnaire increased enjoyment of the course over the lecture group receiving identical material. It is hypothesized that noth increased learning and motivational factors bring about the examination score differentials.

A Model Bill On The Reporting Of Campaign Contributions And Expenditures, William H. Rodgers, Jr. Mar 1970

A Model Bill On The Reporting Of Campaign Contributions And Expenditures, William H. Rodgers, Jr.

Articles

Public demand for strict and effective accountability of public officials engaged in political election campaigns has increased dramatically in recent times. Development of concrete measures to implement the objective, however, has been less quick to materialize. In this article, Professor Rodgers proposes model state legislation to require reporting of campaign contributions and expenditures by most political candidates and committees. The controlling principle of the proposed legislation is total disclosure of all aspects of political campaign financing. The Model Bill contains an effective procedure for administration and enforcement of its provisions.

The Deaf Writer In America From Colonial Times To 1970, Robert Panara

Articles

The experience of the deaf writer in America from Colonial Times to the present has closely parelleled that of countless others who have followed the American dream of fulfillment through opportunity. The study of this representative pioneer is the story of his struggle with the realities of deafness, with the ever-changing milieu, and with his attempt to contribute to the cultural growth of America. And the struggle for recognition is increasing with the tempo of the times.

Short Pulse Response Of Radar Targets, C. Leonard Bennett, Joseph Delorenzo Jan 1969

Short Pulse Response Of Radar Targets, C. Leonard Bennett, Joseph Delorenzo

Articles

The current interest in high resolution radar for the identification of targets has stimulated interest in the investigation of scattered waveforms that result when a short pulse (i.e., an approximate electromagnetic impulse) illuminates the target. From the resulting pulse response, the response due to other incident waveform shapes can be calculated by a convolution operation. In this paper a technique for measuring the imate electromagnetic impulse) illuminates the target. From the form shapes can be calculated by a convolution operation. In this paper a technique for measuring the electromagnetic pulse response is presented and the results are compared with exact …

Photographic Demonstration Of Surface And Interior Conditions Of An Unevenly Heated Liquid, Andrew Davidhazy Jan 1969

Photographic Demonstration Of Surface And Interior Conditions Of An Unevenly Heated Liquid, Andrew Davidhazy

Articles

Movements of the surface of a liquid and convection currents within the liquid during heating and cooling are shown simultaneously using a dual reflection-refraction photographic schlieren system. Means are furnished for identifying and measuring hills and valleys and correlating these with rising and descending streams within the liquid. Two models are selected, melted paraffin wax and isopropyl alcohol, the latter evaporating quietly into its pure vapor, with air excluded.

The Systematic Status Of Painted Turtles (Chrysemys) In The Northeastern United States, F. Harvey Pough, Margaret Pough Aug 1968

The Systematic Status Of Painted Turtles (Chrysemys) In The Northeastern United States, F. Harvey Pough, Margaret Pough

Articles

: Chrysemys picta from islands and the mainland of the northeastern United States show great intrapopulation variation in characters distinguishing C. p. picta from C. p. marginata. There are no significant differences between island and mainland samples. The extent of variation in Chrysemys populations in the northeastern United States precludes meaningful delimitation of restricted areas of intergradation. These turtles probably represent a hybrid swarm.

A Language-Normalization Approach To Information Retrieval In Law, Layman E. Allen Jan 1968

A Language-Normalization Approach To Information Retrieval In Law, Layman E. Allen

Articles

An information retrieval system (as distinguished from a document retrieval system) is described for handling statute-oriented legal literature. The Normalized Sentence-Index Matrix (N-SIM) system suggested differs from more traditional retrieval systems for legal literature in three respects: (1) the categories used for classification are normalized versions of sentences from statutes, regulations, treaties, constitutions, case opinions, legal treatises, law review articles, and other documents in legal literature, (2) the classification system is hierarchial and open-ended to evolve with the literature through time, and (3) the organization of the file facilitates some analysis of the literature by computer. A sentence is expressed …

Do Police Sometimes Practice 'Civil Disobedience', Too?, Yale Kamisar Jan 1968

Do Police Sometimes Practice 'Civil Disobedience', Too?, Yale Kamisar

Articles

In a recent address, Mr. Joseph J. Casper, Assistant Director of the FBI, asserted that "a society living under the rule of law cannot permit persons to choose the Jaws which they will obey and the Jaws which they will break." But on reading the rest of his speech, one wonders whether he would strenuously object if the police were permitted to select the laws which they must obey and those they may disregard.

Has The Court Left The Attorney General Behind? The Bazelon-Katzenbach Letters On Poverty, Equality, And The Administration Of Criminal Justice, Yale Kamisar

Articles

Distribution of the first preliminary draft of the proposed American Law Institute Model Code of Pre-Arraignment Procedure last June touched off a brisk exchange of letters between Chief Judge David Bazelon of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, who maintained that the proposed code left a good deal to be desired, and Attorney General Nicholas deB. Katzenbach, who, although he did not explicitly treat any provision of the preliminary draft, sharply challenged the conception of equality underlying Bazelon's criticism of it. By now, both the code, and the Bazelon-Katzenbach correspondence which it evoked, are …

Real-Time Measurement And Correction Of Phase Distortion In High-Fidelity Radars, Joseph Delorenzo, D. Deangelis, P. Rademachev Jan 1963

Real-Time Measurement And Correction Of Phase Distortion In High-Fidelity Radars, Joseph Delorenzo, D. Deangelis, P. Rademachev

Articles

Phase distortion gives rise to variations in the radar ambiguity function, which in many cases, degrades the resolution capability of the system. This paper briefly describes the characteristics of the common forms of distortion in practical systems and deals with the analytical and experimental results of phase measurements using a correlation type phase error detector. The relationship of this device to active correlators and ambiguity function plotters will be described. A discussion of real-time correction of phase distortion with experimental results is also included.

Making A Streak Camera, Andrew Davidhazy

Articles

This was my first "technical" article that was published in a professional journal and it came about mostly through the encouragement of Dr. Richard Zakia in the early 1960's for whom I prepared this work as a student project and who subsequently encouraged me to submit it to PMI magazine and William Hyzer for publication consideration.

On Charting A Course Through The Mathematical Quagmire: The Future Of Baker V. Carr, Jerold H. Israel Jan 1962

On Charting A Course Through The Mathematical Quagmire: The Future Of Baker V. Carr, Jerold H. Israel

Articles

The Tennessee reapportionment decision, Baker v. Carr,' has been popularly characterized as one of the "very few judicial decisions which have fundamentally reshaped our constitutional system."'2 Newspaper and magazine commentators generally have predicted that the decision of last March is likely to "change the course of our history" by producing a drastic alteration in the balance of power on the state political scene.3 While this end may be desirable,4 any such estimate of the future impact of the Baker decision, at least insofar as its legal consequence is concerned,5 seems not only premature but somewhat exaggerated. The future significance of …
