A Genetic Algorithm To Solve The Subset Sum Problem Based On Parallel Computing, Lei Li, Kai Zhao, Zuwen Ji
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
The subset sum problem is to find subsets in a given number set, meanwhile number sum of the subset is equal to appointed value. It is a classical NP-complete problem in graph theory. It can be solved by the electronic computer in exponential time. In this paper, we consider a DNA procedure for solving the subset sum problem in the Adleman-Lipton model. The procedure works in O(n) steps for the subset sum problem of an undirected graph with n vertices. The innovation of the procedure is the ingenious choice of the vertices strands’ length, which can get the solution of …

Thrust For Permanent Magnet Linear Synchronous Motor, Hengkun Liu, Hu Cheng
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
In order to increase the traction efficiency and driving speed of low-speed maglev train, synchronous traction technology is applied to low-speed maglev train. In order to reduce the normal force of the motor and enhance the stationarity of traction, the motor is designed with air-core coil as primary and permanent magnet Halbach array as secondary. Through theoretical analysis, the analytical expression of motor thrust and normal force is concluded and the thrust of motor is measured on the basis of a certain permanent magnet linear synchronous motor test platform. The effectiveness of the analytical method is verified by means of …

Model Updating And Damage Detection Using Direct Mode Shape Expansion To Dealing With Spatial Incompleteness, Liu Fushun, Wang Weiying, Wang Shuqing
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
In the study of finite element model updating or damage detection, most papers usually employ transformation matrix from the master coordinates to the full-order coordinates, by either model reduction or modal expansion schemes to deal with spatially incomplete situations. This article employs the direct mode shape expansion method, by applying a hybrid vector that is constructed by measured values at master degrees of freedom (dofs) and constant values at slave dofs, to expand the measured spatially incomplete mode shape based on a series of modification factors. One theoretical development is that model updating or damage detection using Cross Model Cross …

Non-Standard Crank-Nicholson Method For Solving The Variable Order Fractional Cable Equation, N. H. Sweilam, T. A. Assiri
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
In this paper, a non-standard Crank-Nicholson finite difference method (NSCN) is presented. NSCN is used to study numerically the variable-order fractional Cable equation, where the variable order fractional derivatives are described in the Riemann- Liouville and the Gr¨unwald-Letnikov sense. The stability analysis of the proposed methods is given by a recently proposed procedure similar to the standard John von Neumann stability analysis. The reliability and efficiency of the proposed approach are demonstrated by some numerical experiments. It is found that NSCN is preferable than the standard Crank-Nicholson finite difference method (SCN).

A Note On Certain Qualitative Properties Of A Second Order Linear Differential System, Cemil Tunc, Osman Tunc
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
In this note, two theorems are presented concerning the well known second order linear differential system ¨X +a(t)X =P(t). While the results are not new, the proofs presented simplify previous works since the Gronwall inequality is avoided which is the usual case. The technique of proof involves the integral test and examples are included to illustrate the results.

A Weighted-Path-Following Interior-Point Algorithm For Second-Order Cone Optimization, Jingyong Tang, Li Dong, Liang Fang, Jinchuan Zhou
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
We present a weighted-path-following interior-point algorithm for solving second-order cone optimization. This algorithm starts from an initial point which is not on the central path. It generates iterates that simultaneously get closer to optimality and closer to centrality. At each iteration, we use only full Nesterov-Todd step; no line searches are required. We derive the complexity bound of the algorithm with small-update method, namely, O , where N denotes the number of second order cones in the problem formulation and e the desired accuracy. This bound is the currently best known iteration bound for second-order cone optimization.

Numerical Simulation Of Acoustic Problems With High Wavenumbers, Fuzhang Wang, Juan Zhang
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
The boundary knot method (BKM) is a kind of boundary-type meshless method, only boundary points are needed in the solution process. Like the boundary element method and method of fundamental solutions, the BKM needs nonsingular general solutions of governing equations. Therefore, collocation points and source points can be located on the physical boundary simultaneously which is superior in dealing with Helmholtz problems. In this paper, the BKM is extended to investigate acoustic problems with high wavenumbers. By comparing with the finite element method, numerical results show that the BKM has excellent advantages in dealing with high wave number acoustic problems.

Passive Forgery Detection For Jpeg Compressed Image Based On Block Size Estimation And Consistency Analysis, Cheng-Shian Lin, Jyh-Jong Tsay
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
As most of digital cameras and image capture devices do not have modules for embedding watermark or signature, passive forgery detection which aims to detect the traces of tamping without embedded information has become the major focus of recent research for JPEG compressed image. However, our investigation shows that current approaches for detection and localization of tampered areas are very sensitive to image contents, and suffer from high false detection rates for localization of tampered areas for images with intensive edges and textures. In this paper, we present an effective approach which overcomes above problem, using reliable estimation and analysis …

A Probabilistic Framework For Robust Face Detection, Mourad Ahmed, M. Hassaballah, Yasser Salama Hassan, A. H. Abd-Ellah, A. S. Abdel Rady
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
Due to its wide range of use in human face-related applications, face detection has been considered one of the most important areas of research in computer vision and visual pattern recognition communities. Though current methods perform well on controlled face images, their performance degrades considerably under realistic scenarios that include pose, illumination and blur challenges as well as low-resolution images. This paper proposes an efficient approach for detecting faces in uncontrolled imaging conditions using a probabilistic framework based on Hough forests. Hough forests can be regarded as task-adapted codebooks of local appearance that allow fast supervised training and fast matching …

Transmitted Torque Analysis Of A Magnetic Gear Mechanism With Rectangular Magnets, Yi-Chang Wu, Chih-Wen Wang
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
Magnetic gears transmit torque by noncontact magnetic coupling rather than meshed mechanical gear teeth. In contrast to traditional mechanical gear mechanisms, non-contact magnetic gear mechanisms possess unique features of low mechanical energy loss, overload protection ability, no need for lubricants, tolerance of misalignment and vibration isolation between adjacent mechanical parts. The analysis of transmitted torque is a prerequisite task when evaluating the performance of a magnetic gear mechanism. In this study, a feasible method for predicting transmitted torque generated by external-type magnetic gear sets with rectangular magnets is demonstrated by employing the current sheet approach. Based on the current sheet …

Modeling And Resource Scheduling Of Real-Time Unsplittable Data Transfers, Mustafa Müjdat Atanak, Atakan Doğan, Mustafa Bayram
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
Real-time communication where the timely delivery of the data transfer requests needs to be guaranteed is essential for several applications. This work formally introduces the Real-Time Unsplittable Data Dissemination Problem (RTU/DDP), which is a generalization of the unsplittable flow problem. RTU/DDP problem is proved to be NP-hard. Therefore, heuristic approaches are required to acquire good solutions to the problem. The problem is divided into two sub-problems: path selection and request packing. Each of these sub-problems is formally defined and heuristic algorithms are proposed for both sub-problems. MinMin/FPF, Edge Disjoint MinMin/FPF, MinCon/FPF, and LFL-MinCon/FPF heuristics are proposed for the path selection …

Entropy Based Redundancy Allocation In Series-Parallel Systems With Choices Of A Redundancy Strategy And Component Type: A Multi-Objective Model, Roya Soltani, Seyed Jafar Sadjadi, Reza Tavakkoli-Moghaddam
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
This paper presents a new multi-objective mathematical model for the redundancy allocation problem with the choices of a redundancy strategy and component type in series-parallel systems. The model considers entropy measure which is a measure of uncertainty in the information theory. For the first time, the model maximizes the reliability and entropy of the system and minimizes the nonlinear cost of the system simultaneously. In addition, this paper considers entropy in distribution of the weights of components within subsystems as another form of entropy, which is more realistic than considering entropy in distribution of the number of components. The subsystems …

Single Sample Face Recognition Using Lgbp And Locality Preserving Discriminant Analysis, Minghai Xin, Yali Zhou, Jingjie Yan
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
On single sample condition, current face recognition algorithm yields serious performance drop or even fail to work, therefore a face recognition algorithm based on LGBP and locality preserving discriminant analysis (LPDA) was proposed. Image enhancement and geometric transformation were firstly introduced to single sample face image for face reconstruction, making reconstruct image and original counterpart as a new training sample set. The feature of LGBP was then adopted for face image feature extraction. Afterwards LPDA was used for feature dimension reduction. Classification was finally accomplished by Euclidean distance- Nearest Neighbour Classifier. The validity of this algorithm was testified by ORL …
