Inference In A Stationary/Nonstationary Autoregressive Time-Varying-Parameter Model, Donald W.K. Andrews, Ming Li

This paper considers nonparametric estimation and inference in first-order autoregressive (AR(1)) models with deterministically time-varying parameters. A key feature of the proposed approach is to allow for time-varying stationarity in some time periods, time-varying nonstationarity (i.e., unit root or local-to-unit root behavior) in other periods, and smooth transitions between the two. The estimation of the AR parameter at any time point is based on a local least squares regression method, where the relevant initial condition is endogenous. The historical context of twentieth-century East Asia led to divergent national identities among Taiwanese people, shaping the contextual and indigenous theologies developed by Taiwan-based theologians during the latter half of the century. These theologies were grounded in distinct historical narratives, inherited diverse theological visions, and employed varied motivations, goals, and methodologies. This thesis examines the theological contributions of Dr. Huang Po-ho (b. 1952) and Rev. Dr. Chow Lien-hwa (1920–2016), two key figures from Taiwan’s two major Protestant communities, to illuminate the theological landscape of late twentieth-century Taiwan. Using qualitative research within the discipline of Practical theology, this study explores the agrarian practices of five Benedictine women’s communities in the United States: the Abbey of Regina Laudis, Our Lady of the Rock Priory, the Abbey of St. Walburga, Immaculate Heart of Mary Abbey, and the Abbey of Our Lady of Ephesus. I focus on the interconnected nature of communal land cultivation and prayer while creating a conspectus of agrarian life for American Benedictine nuns in 2024. This project examines the practice of musical improv and group vocal improvisation as an accessible method for Christian worship, formation, and theological reflection, focusing on the Episcopal Church. It explores musical improv’s potential for community-making and transformation through overlapping elements necessary for improv and love: play, attentiveness, acceptance, self-giving, and trust. This paper also gives attention to the loneliness epidemic, one of the most pressing global problems in the wake of COVID-19, and how musical improv in a faith context might serve to help alleviate social, psychological, and existential loneliness by helping people connect with each other, themselves, and God. …

“Taste And See . . .”: The Eucharist As Immersive Theatre, Vincent Lin

A ceremonial Eucharist bears striking resemblance to immersive theatre, both involving the creation of a delineated space, the prioritization of bodily senses, and emphasis on audience participation. These similarities are not accidental; rather, a ceremonial Eucharist is immersive theatre. Two key arguments are discussed: First, drawing on performance studies, we classify historical eucharistic liturgies through the lens of “doubleness,” moving beyond simplistic categorizations in previous literature. This approach reveals the contemporary Anglican liturgy as theatre, where the event of the Eucharist and the eucharistic elements (the bread and cup) “perform.” Second, utilizing immersive theatre research, we explore how immersive characteristics …

Financial econometrics is a dynamic discipline that began to take on its present form around the turn of the century. Since then it has found a permanent position as a popular course sequence in both undergraduate and graduate teaching programs in economics, finance, and business schools. Because of the breadth of the subject’s foundations, its extensive coverage in applications and because these courses attract a wide range of students with accompanying interests and skill sets that cover diverse areas and technical capabilities, teaching financial econometrics presents many challenges to the university educator. Supply Chain Disruptions And Supplier Capital In U.S. Firms, Ernest Liu, Vladimir Smirnyagin, Aleh Tsyvinski

We empirically and quantitatively study the impact of supply chain disruptions on U.S. businesses. Leveraging granular shipment-level data on the universe of U.S. seaborne imports with nearly 200 million observations, we construct a measure of disruptions at the individual firm level for the time period 2013-2023. We document a significant heterogeneity in disruption rates among U.S. public firms, with a notable increase observed in recent years. We introduce a notion of supplier capital and investigate the effect of supply disruptions on firms’ investment decisions. A new self-weighted least squares (LS) estimation theory is developed for local unit root (LUR) autoregression with heteroskedasticity. The proposed estimator has a mixed Gaussian limit distribution and the corresponding studentized statistic converges to a standard normal distribution free of the unknown localizing coefficient which is not consistently estimable. The estimator is super consistent with a convergence rate slightly below the OP (n) rate of LS estimation. The asymptotic theory relies on a new framework of convergence to the local time of a Gaussian process, allowing for the sample moments generated from martingales and many other integrated dependent sequences. Borderline Personality Disorder is a widely underdiagnosed psychiatric disorder associated with stigma and misinformation, both in the general public and clinical settings. Current diagnostic disclosure methods do not consider borderline-specific challenges, such as interpersonal hypersensitivity and emotion dysregulation. This has led to discrepancies in patient-provider communication approaches, perpetuating underdiagnosis and negative diagnostic experiences, impacting recovery outcomes and attitudes toward the condition. We seek to determine the efficacy of using script-driven imagery as a method of diagnostic disclosure and psychoeducation versus current practice for individuals newly diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. Acute compartment syndrome is a condition of increased pressure in injured extremities leading to decreased oxygen delivery and tissue death in the limb. This condition requires prompt diagnosis to avoid complications such as muscle death and amputation. The current diagnostic standards rely on clinical findings, which are subjective, or compartment pressure measurements, which are painful, invasive, and prone to error. Near-infrared spectroscopy has shown promise as a direct, objective, and non-invasive alternative in identifying compartment syndrome. Targeted temperature management has been shown to improve neurologic status after cardiac arrest; however, recommendations for the timing of its initiation are unclear. Clinical trials have not directly studied time to targeted temperature management initiation, causing wide variability in protocol implementation. We propose a randomized, controlled, multi-center clinical trial to study the effect of early initiation of targeted temperature management in patients who achieve return of spontaneous circulation after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. Immunosuppressed solid organ transplant recipients are at a significantly increased risk of skin cancer and precursor actinic keratoses. Guidelines to protect against these lesions are not well-established. Existing data suggests that photodynamic therapy could be effective in the prevention of new actinic keratoses and skin cancers in this population. Therefore, we propose early intervention with photodynamic therapy to combat actinic keratoses and skin cancer in transplant recipients. We will conduct an intrapatient randomized clinical trial comparing two treatments of topical five-aminolevulinic acid photodynamic therapy to placebo on the face as adjuvants to standard sunscreen in transplant recipients within the first …

Glioblastoma is the most common malignant primary brain tumor in adults. This disease has a dismal prognosis with a median overall survival between 12-18 months. Recent analyses of salvage therapies for recurrence suggest that reirradiation may improve survival. A possible adverse effect is radiation-induced neurocognitive decline. There is a dearth of literature investigating neuroprotective strategies, like using memantine. Our aim is to investigate whether memantine protects neurocognitive function in this population, with an additional goal to show that memantine does not reduce overall and progression free survival. Gestational diabetes is one of the most common obstetric complications and causes both intrapartum issues and increased long-term cardiometabolic risk of type 2 diabetes. Overweight and obese populations are more likely to develop gestational diabetes, which manifests as increased gestational weight gain and postpartum weight retention, perpetuating the cycle of obesity and diabetes in future pregnancies leading to further type 2 diabetes risk. Metformin has become more widely accepted for use during pregnancy and has been associated with decreased gestational weight gain; however, its long-term effects in the postpartum period remain poorly understood. This paper studies consumers’ privacy choices when firms can use their data to make personalized offers. We first introduce a general framework of personalization and privacy choice, and then apply it to personalized recommendations, personalized prices, and personalized product design. We argue that due to firms’ reaction in the product market, consumers who share their data often impose a negative externality on other consumers. Due to this privacy-choice externality, too many consumers share their data relative to the consumer optimum; moreover, more competition, or improvements in data security, can lower consumer surplus by encouraging more data sharing.

Functional coefficient (FC) cointegrating regressions offer empirical investigators flexibility in modeling economic relationships by introducing covariates that influence the direction and intensity of comovement among nonstationary time series. FC regression models are also useful when formal cointegration is absent, in the sense that the equation errors may themselves be nonstationary, but where the nonstationary series display well-defined FC linkages that can be meaningfully interpreted as correlation measures involving the covariates. The present paper proposes new nonparametric estimators for such FC regression models where the nonstationary series display linkages that enable consistent estimation of the correlation measures between them.
