A Modified Procedure For The Quantitative Determination Of Fluoride And The Application Of This Procedure To A Fluoride Balance Study In Children, Beatrice Shuang Wu
A Modified Procedure For The Quantitative Determination Of Fluoride And The Application Of This Procedure To A Fluoride Balance Study In Children, Beatrice Shuang Wu
Masters Theses
Introduction
This research problem was done in connection with the fluoride balance studies on twelve children at Plymouth State Home. The retention balance studies of fluoride by children can be studied indirectly by measuring the amounts of fluoride excreted in the urine and feces after administration of the fluoride in water or in vitamins as sodium fluoride. The fluoride balance study was repeated, because in the previous study (19), there were no samples collected for a base day in which the fluoride was not given. The previous data also indicated that fluoride retention was merely a function of the interval …
Federal – Local Relations: A Case Study Of The City Of Kalamazoo In 1962, Glen L. Bachelder
Federal – Local Relations: A Case Study Of The City Of Kalamazoo In 1962, Glen L. Bachelder
Masters Theses
Purpose and Scope
It is the purpose of this paper to study the impact of federal government aid on Kalamazoo, Michigan in 1962. As a setting for the case study information, the development of federal aid programs as they affect municipal governments in the United States will be explored. The case study approach was selected since the bulk of material now available on the subject deals with the programs as viewed from the National Government level or as applied to the fifty states. Thus the idea of a detailed look at just one city as a recipient of federal aid …

Developing Elementary Science Concepts By An Individualized Approach, Blanche O. Bush, Louis A. Govatos
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
In developing a concept of the universe at the elementary level many learning aids are utilized. Visual presentations, direct observations, experimentations and critical reading accompanied by discussions serve to enhance a child's understanding of a concept. Moreover, it is apparent that all elementary school children do not arrive at the same level of understanding of scientific phenomena. There are many children who do not respond effectively to experimentation and critical reading and thus must rely on direct observations and visual presentation in arriving at a lower level of conceptual development. Other children who are more sophisticated may understand the orderliness …

The Effect Of Food And Drug Laws On Producers Of Paper And Paperboard Used For The Packaging Of Food, Charles W. Walton
The Effect Of Food And Drug Laws On Producers Of Paper And Paperboard Used For The Packaging Of Food, Charles W. Walton
Masters Theses
In 1958 the Food Additives Amendment to the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act was adopted causing a great deal of concern on the part of producers of packaging material. Any ingredient of the package that might migrate or transfer to food contained in the package became, by definition, a food additive subject to regulation and prior approval of the Food and Drug Administration.
Other acts and regulations have been adopted since 1958 indicative of increasing concern by the Federal Government for consumer welfare. This activity can be expected to have far reaching effects on manufacturers who must depart from …
On The Use Of Tris (Hydroxymethyl) Aminomethane As A Diluent In Quantitative Analyses Of Soil Bacteria, Barry L. Keller
On The Use Of Tris (Hydroxymethyl) Aminomethane As A Diluent In Quantitative Analyses Of Soil Bacteria, Barry L. Keller
Masters Theses
Introduction
Many investigations have been conducted in the field of soil microbiology during the past.six decades. Most notable among the contributors is S. A. Waksman whose voluminous works have established many of the procedures used in microbial analyses of soil. Yet, the one fact that is foremost to any reviewer of the literature covering this field is that no standardization of techniques for soil analyses exists. The following presentation deals with one method used to estimate the number of bacteria and actinomycetes in soil.
The use of Tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane (hereafter referred to as "Tris") is not new. Tris currently is used …

Mental Content And Its Relationship To Flexibility Of Reading, Homer L.J. Carter, Dorothy J. Mcginnis
Mental Content And Its Relationship To Flexibility Of Reading, Homer L.J. Carter, Dorothy J. Mcginnis
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
If reading performance is to vary as to kind and degree and especially if rate of reading and the newer media of instruction are to be stressed, a greater emphasis must be placed upon mental content and its relationship to the reading process. For example, in the sentence "The whipple-tree and traces were seriously damaged," little meaning can be secured without adequate mental content. An increased span of perception provides limited help. Contextual clues are of little value. Structural analysis furnishes little aid, and a rapid rate of reading complicates the whole attempt to secure understanding. There must be mental …

Why Can't Johnny Read Better?, Kristen D. Juul
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
During recent years there has been considerable concern among the public with regard to the reading ability of school children. A great deal of unreasonable and some justified criticism has been leveled against the public schools for their purported inability to teach children to read well. Simple causes and simple solutions have been offered. Actually the problem is an exceedingly complex one, and the more we learn about factors related to reading retardation, the more we are becoming conscious of how little we know.

The Utilization Of Hydrogenated Tall Oil In Paper Furnishes, Thomas W. Asmus
The Utilization Of Hydrogenated Tall Oil In Paper Furnishes, Thomas W. Asmus
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
A literature survey is presented concerning the properties of tall oil, the theory of catalysis, and catalytic hydrogenation applied to tall oil. It is the purpose of the experimental work to prepare a material from tall oil by hydrogenation which will lend itself more useful as a sizing agent for certain low grades of paper.
The experimental results indicated that by hydrogenating tall oil soap, a whiter, less oily material is obtainable. Handsheets were prepared using this hydrogenated material, the starting material, and rosin size as sizing agents. It was found that the handsheets sized with the hydrogenated material had …

An Analysis Of Drinking Practices And Problems Among Male Undergraduates At A Midwestern University, Ronald Charles Vanderkooi
Masters Theses
The purpose of this research was to study the patterns and problems of drinking among men at a Midwestern university. The primary method used in the study was a questionnaire given to a cross-section of the male student body. The study was designed to determine the extent of drinking at the university. Such factors as the frequency and locality of drinking were investigated. Attitudes concerning college drinking were also explored. Finally, the study was concerned with problems associated with the use of alcohol by students.

Use Of Dialdehyde Starch In Coating Color Formulation, Craig F. Panse
Use Of Dialdehyde Starch In Coating Color Formulation, Craig F. Panse
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
A literature survey was conducted to determine what work, if any, had been done on dialdehyde starch as a coating adhesive. As a result of the survey, it was decided that experimental work would be started with the hope of overcoming some of the difficulties which confronted previous investigators and investigating further the use of dialdehyde starch as an adhesive.
After experimental preparation and evaluation of the coated and aftertreated sheets, the following conclusions were formed:
1. The addition of ten percent borax buffered or bisulphite buffered dialdehyde starch to conventional oxidized starch increases the surface strength of the coating …

The Effect Of Starch On Clay Dispersions, John L. Moore
The Effect Of Starch On Clay Dispersions, John L. Moore
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
Cationic starches and anionic (oxidized) starches are compared in this thesis with respect to their effect upon dispersion. The methods used for determining dispersion quality were relative sediment volume (RSV) and the Hercules Hi-Shear Viscometer. These methods are compared as to-their applicability for use as practical. tools in determining color dispersion quality. Limitations of RSV are discussed with regard to clay-starch mixtures. Comparisons are made using both types of starch on predispersed and undispersed clays. Hercules rheograms are compared for samples using both starches and clays at 40 percent solids. The rheograms indicate no difference between the cationic and anionic …
Business-Sponsored Films For Physical Science, Bertha Elizabeth Slye
Business-Sponsored Films For Physical Science, Bertha Elizabeth Slye
Masters Theses
For many years business-sponsored films have been used widely in instruction in the science classroom. Because of the potential of the films in helping teachers bridge the gap between the fundamental teaching of scientific principles, and the applications found in the actual experiences of the student's consumer world, requests for them have often exceeded the output of those that are educationally sound. In the last decade in particular, the development of atomic and space technology, as well as the growing interest in science, have made it necessary to teach science beyond the confines of information in the ordinary science textbook. …
The Correspondence Of Error Between The Voiced And Unvoiced Cognates “S” And “Z” In Children With Articulatory Disorders, Gerald F. Johnson
The Correspondence Of Error Between The Voiced And Unvoiced Cognates “S” And “Z” In Children With Articulatory Disorders, Gerald F. Johnson
Masters Theses
Introduction
The problem as set forth in this thesis is to determine the correspondence of error between the voiced and unvoiced cognates "s" and "z" in children with articulatory disorders. It has been assumed that the correspondence of error type would be high due to the similarity of the sounds. Anderson, for example, says that "much of what is true with respect to "s" applies with equal force to its voiced analogue "z"." The problem of this research is to determine whether there is any correspondence between the respective errors on the sibilants "s" and "z" and if they correspond …

Hymnody In The Liturgical Aspects Of Worship, Philip Steen
Hymnody In The Liturgical Aspects Of Worship, Philip Steen
Masters Theses
The main purpose of this study was concerned with the relationship of hymns to services in the church. The author sought to answer the question, "What are the hymns that should be used for a certain service in the Church Year?” This would have to be explained from both a theological and musical viewpoint. In order to answer this question, it was necessary to include four minor areas of study (1) the history and use or hymns and hymn tunes, {2) the history and use of the Liturgical Year, (3) the elements that determine a good hymn and (4) the …
