Reading: The Other Side Of The Coin, Evelyn B. Thornton

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Among college students from culturally deprived backgrounds the problem of communicating ideas in writing is indeed a real one. It hampers their progress in most of their academic courses and, in numerous cases, forces them to give up their goal of becoming college graduates—a decision which jeopardizes their chances of achieving their maximum potential.

Walsingham And Burghley: Factionalism In The Privy Council Under Elizabeth I, John W. Nott Apr 1966

Walsingham And Burghley: Factionalism In The Privy Council Under Elizabeth I, John W. Nott

Masters Theses

Introduction

The Elizabethan Age was the age of Shakespeare and Marlowe, when the English literacy renaissance attained a claims; the age of Drake, Hawkins, and Frobisher, when English sea power asserted its genius. It was also the age of great statesmen and political improvisation, for England was beginning to emerge as a world power. Headed by a queen whose primary claim to fame rested with her ability to inspire her people and manage her talented ministers, the island kingdom soon attained the status of a major nation. At Elizabeth's accession the government was in a state of decline but skillful …

The Effect Of High Velocity Shear On Coating Properties, Richard Wilhelm Jan 1966

The Effect Of High Velocity Shear On Coating Properties, Richard Wilhelm

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

The chief reason for this work was to investigate the effect of a high velocity shear imparted to a NoKarb clay by a Cowles Dissolver at 5600 rpm.

After 12-hour shearing period drawdowns were made of both the sheared and unsheared clays. Comparisons were then made with respect to brightness, opacity, gloss, Bekk Smoothness, Dennison Wax pick, and K and N Ink Holdout using a starch and a styrene butadiene adhesive.

Plant-Derived Pigments And Dyes Used By Artists, Samuel C. Rizzetta Dec 1965

Plant-Derived Pigments And Dyes Used By Artists, Samuel C. Rizzetta

Masters Theses

History

Uses of Biologically-derived Products in Painting

Throughout history man has relied heavily on plant-derived materials in the production of paintings. Plant products have been used to fulfill each of the material requirements of painting. The ground or surface upon which an artist applies paint -is usually of plant origin, such as woven fabrics and paper. The ancient Egyptians painted on canvas (from Linum usitatissimum L.), papyrus, (from Cyperus papyrus L.), and wood (Lucas, 1934:149-150, 201-203; Laurie, 1910:17, 31-32).

At the time of Theophilus leather parchment, preferably of horsehide, was popular for painting (Bazzi, 1960:13). After parchment, walls and wooden …

The Effect Of Fines On Relative Bonded Area, Richard G. Bowler Sep 1965

The Effect Of Fines On Relative Bonded Area, Richard G. Bowler

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Bonding characteristics of the fibers in a sheet of paper have long been, and still are, difficult to isolate in a manner which will give exact quantitative information on the degree or bonding. It is possible to indicate with strength tests different levels or bonding. Other factors -- fiber strength, fiber length, cell wall thickness, etc.,-- also enter into values obtained in these tests and make the assignment of exact meaning to bonding impossible. The subject of a major port of this literature search deals with measurement of another bonding characteristics, relative bonded area or simply bonded area. This again …

Banesism And Molinism In Theory And Practice, Burns K. Seeley Jul 1965

Banesism And Molinism In Theory And Practice, Burns K. Seeley

Masters Theses

Last paragraph of Introduction:

The purpose of this paper is to acquire a better understanding of the relationship between grace and tree will, that is, the paradox between the omnipotence of God and human free will. More specifically speaking, this paper will deal with two historical approaches to the problem, namely, Baneziem and Molinism. At the onset we shall learn something about Domingo Banez, O.P. and Luis de Molina, S.J. who were largely responsible for the systems which bear their names. We shall then learn something or the historical circumstances which produced Banezism and Molinism and also some or the …

U.S. Foreign Aid Policy: Its Impact On Public Opinion, Jane L. Olson Jul 1965

U.S. Foreign Aid Policy: Its Impact On Public Opinion, Jane L. Olson

Masters Theses

Introduction

An analysis of the relationships between public policy and public opinion is vital to gaining an understanding and appreciation of the political process in the United States. According to democratic theory, citizens are to be free to express their views on issues and policy decisions. In a representative democracy the elected officials are supposed to carry out the wishes of their constituents. This study is directed toward analyzing the relationships between foreign aid policy and public opinion toward ten selected policy changes which have taken place since World War II. It focuses on the formal foreign aid program; and, …

The Social Implications Of Dante’S Commedia, Judson I. Mather Jun 1965

The Social Implications Of Dante’S Commedia, Judson I. Mather

Masters Theses

Introduction

The focus of this study has derived, in part, from the experience of teaching a course in "The History of Social Thought" to undergraduate sociology majors. The more comprehensive texts in the field accord Dante some notice. But the treatment he receives as a social thinker is uniformly patronizing. One of the most substantial and adequate of these texts, for example -- the three-volume study by Howard Becker and Harry Elmer Barnes-- has this to say:

The key to Dante's character and to his social theory as well is to be found in the fact that "world peace was …

The Science Of Linguistic Laisser-Aller, Louis Foley Jan 1965

The Science Of Linguistic Laisser-Aller, Louis Foley

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Those of us who are unapologetically devoted to the cause of correct English are not necessarily so hopelessly oldfogyish as some of the "scientific" popularizers of linguistics take us to be. We are not harking back to any imaginary "good old days." Some of us would say unhesitatingly that the best English of today, all things considered, is the best there ever was. We are not disposed, how ever, to accept blithely on the ground of "usage" just any sort of careless confusion or ignorant corruption merely because it has considerable currency. Indeed, one may well contend that there is …

Relation Between Use Of Lincomycin And Outgrowth Of Yeast, Howard W. Clapp Jun 1964

Relation Between Use Of Lincomycin And Outgrowth Of Yeast, Howard W. Clapp

Masters Theses

Introduction

The use of antibiotics has increased the average life expectancy of mankind. They have prevented and cured infectious diseases that previously terminated in death. Consequently, recovery is often prompt and complete.

Though a benefit to mankind, the use of antibiotics in the treatment of infectious disease has also been accompanied by new problems. For example, treatment of a primary infection such as a bacterial pneumonitis with a broad spectrum antibiotic, may result in the death of some of the bacteria. More than one species of bacteria, however, are often found in the infected area. If such be the situation, …

The Russian Revolution Of 1905 As Depicted By Contemporary American Reports, With Special Emphasis On The "Bloody Sunday" Incident Of January 22, 1905, Patrick Kay Bidelman

Masters Theses

Preface

On Sunday morning, January 22, 1905, a crowd of workers marched through the streets of St. Petersburg, Russia. They were led by a Russian Orthodox priest, Father George Gapon, who had a petition to grievances to present to Czar Nicholas II. As they converged on the square in front of the Winter Palace, they were fired upon by the Imperial troops. The result was a complete military victory for the autocracy and a casualty rate among the petitioners that has caused the incident to go down in history as "Bloody Sunday."

On Monday, January 23, newspapers throughout the United …

Pachycereus Marginatus Alkaloids, John M. Brewer Jan 1964

Pachycereus Marginatus Alkaloids, John M. Brewer

Masters Theses

Introduction

Serturner's paper, 1817, "Morphis, a New Salt-forming Substance, and Meconic Acid, as the Chief Constituents of Opium", opened a new era of discovery in organic plant chemistry. His isolation of the first alkaloid was soon followed by the isolation or narcotine by Robiquet and strychnine by Pelletier and Caventou. These basic compounds were at first called vegetable alkalies, but were later renamed alkaloids, meaning alkali-like11.
